Why Ranil Is Still Needed

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

Shyamon Jayasinghe

“Mahinda picked up this part of the opportunistic psychology of our politicians when he famously stated that he runs a barber saloon where MPs can walk-in and walk out. What an amazing metaphor!”

Cool

The Joint Opposition move to pass a vote of no-confidence in the Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, will come a cropper. Ranil knows that best as he has tersely told a group of opposition pollies (Australia slang for ‘politicians’), “Come on! present  the motion in Parliament and we will defeat that.” His own UNP MPs, he advised not to panic over the motion because it has not even been presented to the Speaker. In his 40 year-long political history Ranil Wickremesinghe has never been observed panicking. What is it that invests him with such an emotional state? His savvy knack about Sri Lankan politics. He knows the jokers he is dealing with him.

Pradarshanaya or Showmanship

Yes, the latest move by JO and its veritable leader Mahinda Rajapaksa was described by someone the other day as a “pradasharanaya,” or “gimmick  exhibition.” Mahinda is brilliant on this kind of showmanship and it has borne him success. Soon after he lost the 2014 Presidential elections and the General elections the following year, Mahinda commenced “Mahinda Sulanga.” That was a  series of public meetings beginning with Nugegoda about which Dayan Jayatilleka went into raptures. Mahinda knows how to get crowds and arrange a show of them. He did it at his election meetings when the front row of his audience was  studded with his human shield of supporters  whom he carried with him wherever he went. Women were lined up by the ropes and they would  simply rush to try and touch the divinity as he wades through. They failed to touch even the many golden rings around his wrist and the Indian charms. Yet, the show was what was important. The frenetic effort! As Mahinda would eventually ascend the stage, dressed in his red  Kurakkan Satakaya, a kid or an aged person would materialize for the King to display his human touch. Mahinda kisses the kid; if it were an aged person, the latter would “try” to bend in two before the monarch and, once again, the monarch would show a ‘humility,’ by disallowing such genuflection. Media cameras and drone cameras recorded all this. Taxpayer-funded TV media went blast.

The meeting can now start.

Mahinda Rajapaksa’s showmanship is his real asset  in the political gameplay. It works, and Pragmatic philosophers would tell us that what works is truth. Ranil Wickremesinghe fails miserably on this skill. He simply is not up to that. On the other hand, Ranil is often seen in a simple white shirt and pants or in a Western suite complete with tie. Mahinda’s satakaya beats the tie and that resonates with the Buddhistic nationalist stream whom he is tailoured to. Ranil cannot do that. Even before the Mahnayake’s, Ranil is often seen in shirt and tie. I have never seen him carrying babies.

Our Selfish, Loony, Pollies

The sharp, outstanding distinction between the two images represent one important political truth about the general behaviour of our pollies. They are generally a set of selfish, loony blokes  who  creep into Parliament to make a  buck and try to remain there by showmanship or pretence acts. Most of them are ignorant and over 60 per cent have not passed the O’Levels. Mahinda Rajapaksa plays into and symbolises that deeply disturbing trend. Such mind -frames cannot produce healthy political outcomes for the country. Their  policies and decisions are intended to get over the moment. The short term is what they eye. Painful longterm decisions are anathema.

Liquidity of political alliances is a defining consequence of this attitude. Parties are not the thing but self-interest is. Mahinda picked up this part of the opportunistic psychology of our politicians when he famously stated that he runs a barber saloon where MPs can walk-in and walk out. What an amazing metaphor! I recently re-read philosophers who said that the world and life is absurd and merely governed by chance. Even the greatest mind of our generation the late Stephen Hawking, said something like that. Well, if nothing else is absurd the Sri Lankan polity is absurd.

In such a context, Ranil Wickremesinge’s very dress appearance seems an anachronism. His effort toward installing good governance systems  in the island is subject to ridicule by our pollies. Even most of his own party men do not grasp  the need for such systems. The substantial gains that his government has realised thus far, goes undervalued. Ranil’s  farseeing economic policies and strategies are just a nuisance as they have “no impact” on the voting public.

Bond Issue

To be honest, Ranil Wickremesinghe hasn’t been all that cautious about many of his doings. The Presidential Commission into the so-called bond scam, had suggestively advised the Prime Minister to be more cautious about his appointments. (I say, ‘so-called,’ because I remain not convinced that any scam has in fact taken place here.) The Commission hasn’t, however, found him or any Minister as being involved in the ‘scam.’ Ravi Karunanayake’s issue is not directly related to the incident and so the Commission wanted allegations relating to the latter separately investigated. Be that as it be, the fact is that the JO campaign has succeeded in making the Prime Minister perceived by the public as a guilty party. It is the success of showmanship  over fact.

Bullseye of Opposition Attack

Ranil is dragged into that focus all the time and  attempts are being made to disgrace him. All Opposition guns are on Ranil. As a historical fact, we can recall how Ranil Wickremesinghe had been the bullseye of  the Rajapaksa attack men men even during the time the latter had been in government. He was labelled a failure; unable to win elections. This criticism had being contrary to the position that he had succeeded in being Prime Minister three or four times. At the last General Elections, Ranil broke all records by registering over 500,00 votes in his electoral district. This was no mean achievement.

About twenty years in opposition, Ranil managed to keep his party together without breaking up against the intense manipulative pressure of the Rajapaksa government. His party leadership  was challenged twice  by his own men. However, Wickremesinghe showed considerable understanding and emotional management to  override all these attempts-subtle and direct- and to ride high. In this way, Ranil’s political resilience is outstanding. One cannot easily put Ranil down as, like a rubber ball pressed to sink in water, he keeps coming up. He had predicted the UNP will form government two years before it did this time and so that happened.

From this perspective, the myriad attempts by Opposition over the years to target Ranil Wickremesinghe speaks more of his attackers than of him; for that demonstrates that Opposition’s number one bogeyman is none other than Ranil Wickremesinghe. That throws light on Ranil’s effectiveness and not of his weaknesses.

In fact, the Opposition shows poverty in their futile efforts to paint Ranil Wickremesinghe as a corrupt man. There have never been any charges of corruption against him. No charges of murdering dissentient journalists. On the other hand, of Mahinda Rajapaksa we have a totally opposite picture. The former Chief Justice Sarath N Silva openly alleged that Mahinda, while he was Prime Minister, had been seriously guilty over siphoning off Tsunami funds to private bank accounts. The present Commission about serious financial crimes have recommended that Mahinda and some other ministers of his regime should be deprived of their civic rights. White vans and gruesome murders marked the former regime.

The contrasting picture is that  Ranil Wickremesinghe still remains Mr Clean. He is also Mr Cool. Ranil Wickremesinghe’s political skills are proven. So is his vision capacity. To me, the most important thing about this much maligned and underestimated leader is that he stands for the  values  that can keep Sri Lanka together. Ranil Wickremesinghe, even in his depressed moments, never resorted to racial slogans; never touted Sinhala Buddhist nationalism. He is provenly multicultural. He is also modern in economic and political outlook.

To add to these attributes, Ranil is one of the handful in Parliament who possess knowledge of social and economic policy. The nation needs him to remain. He may groom a successor – that’s a different matter. The fact is that he is still needed if Sri Lanka  is to be saved from the mad world of selfish loonies. Among all the bunch of political leaders that Lanka now has, Ranil Wickremesinghe stands alone – still unmatched.

Please remember as an actor Mahinda Rajapaksa flopped. As a politician he is a successful actor.

      Shyamon,

Fully agree with you …….. Ranil is not anything special in the global landscape …… but very special in the context of SL as there is no one else like him in the country.

Don’t have to be very tall ……… to be a giant in a nation of midgets! :))

I consider, stopping commercial flights taking off from Katunayake and landing in Mahinda Rajapakse International Airport, 5 minutes later as the greatest economic achievement of Ranil ………. that’s great economic insight for a Lankan!

Winning elections is just for dummies ………. there are too many of them around ………. all you gotta do is sell them rice from the moon ………….

Lanka the paradise like no other …….. Oh! how I miss thee ……….

      Thanks for the write up.

Who is NOT needed? Sirisena, the Traitor, Patholaya. Sevalaya and Perethaya, who has stabbed the 6.2 mullion who voted for him.

Ranil W. needs to shed his Western dress and tie, and wear a sarong or the white politicians sarong, or even better, the clothes his uncle JR wore. He can certainly pick up some additional votes and support. After all the national average IQ is 79.

A leader must first be a husband and a father. This is the greatest test of leadership.

Sinhalese like their leaders to be strong, virile and masculine. Like as Evidenced by D.S, Sir John, Dahanayake, Julius Richard, and Premadasa. Go back further it was personages like Parakramabahu, Gaja Bahu, Rajasinghe 11, Keppettipola. The heroism and Valour of ancient leaders such as Ravana, Pandukabaya and Dutugamunu still exists among the masses. Although unknown to the senile Aussie citizen Jayasinghe.

‘”The Joint Opposition move to pass a vote of no-confidence in the Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, will come a cropper.”

Indeed, will come to a cropper…. From Grape Vines , Bulath Vines and Vetilla Vines News…

The no confidence motion bearing the signatures of 55 M.P.’s against prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was handed over to the speaker of parliament today (21) at 2.30 p.m. by Dinesh Gunawardena M.P.

A group of MP.s including ex president Mahinda Rajapakse were present on the occasion.

51 M.P.s of the Joint Opposition , and four M.Ps of Sirisena faction had signed the motion. The four M.P.s are : Nishantha Muthuhettigama , T.B. Ekanayake , Susantha Punchi Nilame and Cader Masthan.

Meanwhile Akila Viraj Kariyawasam the education minister and Deputy secretary UNP speaking on the no confidence motion said , the sole aim and objective of the no confidence motion was to avert the legal actions that are being taken against the frauds , corruption and murders which were committed in the past , and to whitewash the egregious sins of the Joint Opposition.

Not a single UNP er has extended support to it , and he does not think there are mentally deranged members in the UNP who would act that way , Akila pointed, while adding if the no confidence motion is tabled it will definitely be defeated .

Mr Ranil W. has not solved the ethnic and religious issues of the country. Why is there too many armed forces and military intelligence in NPC?
Why are they involved in agriculture and trade? This leads to depriving of livelihoods of people in the NPC.
R.W. Has to act ASAP or leave

If it is stopped RW and UNP goes even faster.

Don’t forget 85% are not “Srilankan” Tamils. Whoever contests Tamils vote for the UNP so their votes can be taken for granted. Its the other voters RW has to worry. Surely Tamils don’t want 2005 repeated!!

      Mr. Jayasingha,
“he stands for the values that can keep Sri Lanka together. Ranil Wickremesinghe, even in his depressed moments, never resorted to racial slogans; never touted Sinhala Buddhist nationalism. “
You have neatly summed up Ranil’s mindset.
But the problem is that this is not the mindset of the vast majority, even UNP supporters. So it is not surprising that he wins few elections. Neither does he have Mahinda’s hollow showmanship. What you see is what you get, not baby-kissing in daylight and murder at night.
I believe Sajit Premadasa has cannily got himself into the Sinhala-Buddhist mould, though it remains to be seen whether it is real.
Perhaps Ranil is ahead of (or behind) the times? Sri Lanka is fast reverting to the clergy-influenced feudal and superstitious mindsets which were mitigated in colonial times. Ranil would do well in a place like Singapore.

Ranil’s major defect is an inability to act when the time is right. He should have locked up the crooks in January 2015. Or was there something more to it?

      Naman

“Why are they involved in agriculture and trade? This leads to depriving of livelihoods of people in the NPC.”

If the armed forces are removed from North where do you think they should be stationed? If you keep them in the south they may get wrong ideas. An army that committed war crimes including rape and murder is too dangerous to be moved to the south. Even now when they are on holiday they do demand free preferential
services /treatment because they believe they are war heroes, and deserved to be treated differently.

I doubt Ranil or anyone else resolving our ethnic problem unless the Sinhalese Buddhist majority change their mindset which is hardly likely given the Sinhala Buddhist inferiority and fear complex. My understanding is that in history nothing good has ever disappeared despite opposition, conflict and struggles against it .What is good, noble and desirable cannot be stamped out from history. Buddhism is a noble doctrine and will remain as a living philosophy provided those claiming to be its adherents follow its teachings. Otherwise it will be in the field of academics like the philosophy of Plato one of the great thinkers of all time.

Dr Ranil couldn’t win even a Chook Raffle for the last two decades, until Sillysens sold his and another 40 SLFP souls to the UNP for Mega Bux and other Santhosams, which will eventually come out in the public.
Already Silly and his 40can’t go to their Electorates, which was evident from the demolition which they copped at the recent Election.
Vellala Party Leader Mr Sampathar, the king pin of the Conspiracy to put Ranil into Power even has no confidence in Dr Ranil.
Mr Sampathar is now begging Sillysena to deliver what Dr Ranil has given in writing.
    Can Sillysena even do it?
I won’t put my Money on it..
It is better if Dr Ranil limps on to the next Election.
Can’t understand why Pohottuwa is in a hurry to kick him out.
They should allow Senanayaka’s grand son to do it and enjoy the Ride…..

Srinivasan, I can understand the animosity you have for the Rajapakses and the adulation for RW who obviously represents the Tamil community and NOT the Sinhalese. The point that demala idiots like you will never understand is that, every time a demala buffoon opens his mouth against the Rajapkses, the popularity of the Rajapakses among the Sinhalese increases. So keep on attacking the Rajapakses and praising RW, you are doing an excellent job you thosai eating mongrel.

I agree completely with Shyamon that Ranil is needed for now. However I do feel like you paint a better portrait of him than reality.
Although I do believe Ranil is a good man with sri lanka’s best interest at heart, I do feel he is not that capable at governing.

He is not pragmatic at all. He should have planned for sri lanka to see some benefits atleast halfway into this parliament’s duration after the 2015 general election. There is no purpose of setting sri lanka up for an amazing future if the government changes due to it’s lack of popularity.

If the Rajapaksa’s come back to power, they will never give it back up

In an article to CT yesterday, Dr Nihal Jayawickrama pointed out that the Presidents powers have been trimmed so much by the 19th amendment that he is in fact little more than a figurehead. He also questioned why a costly and disruptive presidential was needed if that was the case. If so future Presidents should be elected by Parliament and RW is probably the best candidate we have. He is lazy, incompetent, does not have to do anything of consequence and…. loves to travel overseas at state expense.

Tell me 5 things achieved by Ranil as a leader or politician to solve the problems in Sri Lanka?

His mantra is selling pubic assets and expecting FDI miracle!
It is not he is corrupt or not, It is about he is capability to govern! His judgments. His decisions. His management style!

He could not even act on the impending racial violence and contain the situation with his IGP! So what horse crap are you talking Shyaman?

Ranil is a burden to UNP. UNP need Imthiaz Bakeer Marker as the leader, not other cacophonies like Ravi, Karu, Harsha, Eran ……SF Rajitha.. time to get rid of all these bull shitters.

Mahinda is the best showman in our history. His RED LOIN CLOTH (Amuda Lensuwa) around his neck makes him the biggest hypocrite in our political history. But his red Amuda Lensuwa around his ugly neck cannot cover the crimes and frauds he has committed over 30 years of his politics. Here is a snapshot of what this Red Amuda Lensuwa has done in our land.

    1. Stealing $800 million of Tsunami funds through fake NGO called Helping Hambantota set up with assistance from Willie Gamage and depriving poor families of their right to rebuild their lives devastated by Tsunami

    2. Taking 19 billion US dollars as commissions from Chinese government corporations through white elephant useless development projects such as Hambantota Harbour, Airport, and southern expressway

    3. Putting Sri Lanka economy into an endless misery by taking high interest loans from China and pocketing in 40% of that money

    4. Nurturing an unprecedented culture of corruption and political victimization with immunity

    5. Killing and attacking journalists, judges, innocent civilians for 10 years

    6. Appointing an uneducated GoTa as defence head and stealing the credit of ending the 30 year war from SF, the true hero who led the final war against LTTE

    7. Making a synthetic lawyer of an idiotic son who couldn’t even pass his GCE (OL)

    8. Killing the most famous rugby player on behalf of another moron son
    9. Soliciting sex from girls of the families that lost their loved ones due to Premadasa Terror campaign in exchange of your service as a human rights lawyer in 1980s
    10. Raping girls in villages from down south on the promise of jobs

I have to disqualify myself before I make a statement. I no longer live in SL and so whatever I say carries a bit of hypocritical “patriotism” to the motherland. But having said that, this is an interesting article bent on more singing praise of the PM than anything else. The Bond issue threw a lot of egg in their Royal Cabal though and is indefensible because the Commission was very bold and courageous to get to the truth. But my only point here is to say I am pretty sure the No Confidence Motion is a fucking joke and will fail. Only 55 people signed it and only those 55 will vote for it. MR and gang get some advertising going through the motions. In the meantime the Government keeps appeasing LTTE Tamil terrorist expatriates while ignoring other expat groups. Look at what happened in Geneva. LTTE claimed Trinco was only 1% Sinhala in the 1800s and 65% Tamil and now it is 30% Sinhala. So Godahewa has a superb repartee to these Leeches. He said Wellawatte was 1% tamil in the 1800s but 80% Tamil now! End of story to the racist Tamil Tiger fuckaces ugly bastards living in the West wanting war. Don’t people have a RIGHT to live everywhere and anywhere in Australia and Switzerland though some parts are predominantly German or French in Switzerland and governed that way? Fuck Eelam tamil expats.

Just one simple thing is enough to demonstrate Mahinda’s ‘boru show’ for the benefit of the masses as against the way Ranil sets about things. Ranil does NOT dye his hair black like Mahinda does (and for that matter like almost every one of the other SL pollies does)

Ranil’s Hair – White with the age, simple, clean and it shows as it should have been and that can be described as honesty.

Mahinda’s hair – Jet black irrespective of his age and covered with artificial colour. The same will imply his dishonesty.
I just compared two heads to get some Idea about two personalities while totally agreeing with what Mr.Shyamon Jayasinghe has written.

Shyamon Jayasinghe has tried to whitewash RW. Please see the recent comments made by Central Bank Governor who said Sri Lanka has the worst growth rate in 2017 since 2001. All the other indices and key performance indicators also shows the same. During the war we had better growth rates than 2017. Provincial election in February 2017 showed whether the policies of RW was acceptable to the country or not.
SJ, please don’t try to fool the intelligent people in this country.

Shaymon is now revelling in muddy waters.
Yes. Ranil is needed to scrape bottom of the CB. still a way to reach the bottom.

Is the Unicorn with single horn real??
    Then how about Shaymon?

He has mastered the art of dividing and ruling, better than his uncle and the SLFP is in shambles with only more splits showing. I am no great fan of him, but he is one master politician and as I have pointed out earlier, show me one other politician who has lasted in politics after almost 32 defeats and that too still charting the party at the helm.

The teams are down to two.
The Island of 21 March has this news of some local government elected representatives taking oath of office. Never heard of this before. One can see MR practicing the Presidential role. This is bound to cause heartburns in one team.
The attempt to dislodge RW is another issue.
While we all watch the game, LankanAirlines will be sold!

”Among all the bunch of political leaders that Lanka now has, Ranil Wickremesinghe stands alone – still unmatched”
Agreed, Ranil is the best out of the bad bunch but he is at the end of his tether. Maybe the dithering, slimy President is responsible for obstructing Ranil’s attempts to reform the country but I have lost confidence in Ranil because his integrity is at question. He chose loyalty to his corrupt crony friends instead to the country.

Maybe all those in power, from Politicians & Govt. bureaucrats to the Judiciary & Law Enforcement, are corrupt but I would expect Ranil to at least reform his party by investigating allegations of misconduct of party members, starting with Ravi K. When the average citizen, particularly, the poor, are burdened with the ever rising cost of living brought about by stealth taxes on everyday items, I wonder how many of those party members who seemed have accumulated vast amounts of wealth in a short period even pay their fair share of dues to the Inland Revenue.

A recent undercover investigation by Channel 4 in UK on an ”intelligence gathering” company by the name of Cambridge Analytica, which was supposed to be behind the successful political campaign of Trump, informs the undercover reporter (incidentally, a Sri Lankan), that elections are won not on facts but on emotions & dishes out all the dark secrets & dirty tricks, from using illegally obtained personal data to identify & target swing voters to bribes & ‘honey pots’ (in this case Ukrainian girls), & even false news, to discredit opponents. In fact, Channel 4 used Sri Lanka as the decoy, implying a wealthy family requiring the services of Cambridge Analytica to conduct the election campaign strategy to come to power, which they swallowed hook, line & sinker. The fact that Sri Lanka was chosen as a credible decoy for the operation over other corrupt third word countries, is an indication how Sri Lanka is perceived in the eyes of the international media as a leader in the corruption game.

ShyamonJayasinghe: what a way to present the bond scam. It is just a trifling mistake. So, No confidence motion is useless for this important man. Is this for the DUMBs out of that 225 who follow Ranil wickramasinghe. where did you read, that Ranil had been asked to be careful, when Ranil did not thing and he explaing his economic politicis to the AG, CIABOC and those who were listening. Ranil alwys says I dod not do anything wrong. How come CIABOC says Ranil di dsomething wrong. I heard one of those senior ministers who doe snot like to quit politics says that had said in “RHATUN VEDI MAGE OSSE” program, that others MUST do what Ranil says. So, you have confirmed it. Anyway, this article matches wth Ranil’s Acumen in politics, economics, Law and order, Srilankan air lines and publicity stunts like anti-muslims violence and endurence as a poltician.

On the one hand, Ranil is accused of saving the Rajapasas from murder and robbery. Yet the same lot shouts for Ranil’s removal. On the contrary they should be thankful to Ranil for saving the Rajapaksas and should fight to retain Ranil. The truth is they all fear Ranil as he can not be bought over for money. They all know that Ranil will deliver Justice when the time comes. Justice can not be relied upon now, with a biased Judiciary, Police/Public Service that MR made servile. Ranil has to be there taking the leadership in 2020 to cleanse the Augean Stables and deliver this Nation with a cleaner/decent set of people to select from, who would govern this country in the future. Certainly not by the Hoi Polloi who came in after Banda opened the flood gates in 1956, shouting down with Capitalism and blaming the Rapacious West, only for them to become the richest in the country today and taking citizenship in that Rapacious West for their families and friends.

Mr. shyamon Jayasinghe. Anglican is for Colombo elite. How Ranil can disczard that and tout Sinhala buddhism. IT is his relative Rajiva who said Even though Ranil is from colombo elite snd two peice suit wearing gentleman he was very muah for Sinhala languzage for schoold children. It is the same logic why did he get KEselWaththa Kid as the second in command who likes only the Udagama and Agrarian services ministry. He slelected PENTHOUSE RAVI and hie is without a Blazer, no smile yet hangs near Ranil. why wijedasa was out in order to very active thalatha athukorala Justice minister who completed prosecution of Rajapakses.
