Why Ranil Is Still Needed

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

Shyamon Jayasinghe

“Mahinda picked up this part of the opportunistic psychology of our politicians when he famously stated that he runs a barber saloon where MPs can walk-in and walk out. What an amazing metaphor!”

Cool

The Joint Opposition move to pass a vote of no-confidence in the Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, will come a cropper. Ranil knows that best as he has tersely told a group of opposition pollies (Australia slang for ‘politicians’), “Come on! present  the motion in Parliament and we will defeat that.” His own UNP MPs, he advised not to panic over the motion because it has not even been presented to the Speaker. In his 40 year-long political history Ranil Wickremesinghe has never been observed panicking. What is it that invests him with such an emotional state? His savvy knack about Sri Lankan politics. He knows the jokers he is dealing with him.

Pradarshanaya or Showmanship

Yes, the latest move by JO and its veritable leader Mahinda Rajapaksa was described by someone the other day as a “pradasharanaya,” or “gimmick  exhibition.” Mahinda is brilliant on this kind of showmanship and it has borne him success. Soon after he lost the 2014 Presidential elections and the General elections the following year, Mahinda commenced “Mahinda Sulanga.” That was a  series of public meetings beginning with Nugegoda about which Dayan Jayatilleka went into raptures. Mahinda knows how to get crowds and arrange a show of them. He did it at his election meetings when the front row of his audience was  studded with his human shield of supporters  whom he carried with him wherever he went. Women were lined up by the ropes and they would  simply rush to try and touch the divinity as he wades through. They failed to touch even the many golden rings around his wrist and the Indian charms. Yet, the show was what was important. The frenetic effort! As Mahinda would eventually ascend the stage, dressed in his red  Kurakkan Satakaya, a kid or an aged person would materialize for the King to display his human touch. Mahinda kisses the kid; if it were an aged person, the latter would “try” to bend in two before the monarch and, once again, the monarch would show a ‘humility,’ by disallowing such genuflection. Media cameras and drone cameras recorded all this. Taxpayer-funded TV media went blast.

The meeting can now start.

Mahinda Rajapaksa’s showmanship is his real asset  in the political gameplay. It works, and Pragmatic philosophers would tell us that what works is truth. Ranil Wickremesinghe fails miserably on this skill. He simply is not up to that. On the other hand, Ranil is often seen in a simple white shirt and pants or in a Western suite complete with tie. Mahinda’s satakaya beats the tie and that resonates with the Buddhistic nationalist stream whom he is tailoured to. Ranil cannot do that. Even before the Mahnayake’s, Ranil is often seen in shirt and tie. I have never seen him carrying babies.

Our Selfish, Loony, Pollies

The sharp, outstanding distinction between the two images represent one important political truth about the general behaviour of our pollies. They are generally a set of selfish, loony blokes  who  creep into Parliament to make a  buck and try to remain there by showmanship or pretence acts. Most of them are ignorant and over 60 per cent have not passed the O’Levels. Mahinda Rajapaksa plays into and symbolises that deeply disturbing trend. Such mind -frames cannot produce healthy political outcomes for the country. Their  policies and decisions are intended to get over the moment. The short term is what they eye. Painful longterm decisions are anathema.

Liquidity of political alliances is a defining consequence of this attitude. Parties are not the thing but self-interest is. Mahinda picked up this part of the opportunistic psychology of our politicians when he famously stated that he runs a barber saloon where MPs can walk-in and walk out. What an amazing metaphor! I recently re-read philosophers who said that the world and life is absurd and merely governed by chance. Even the greatest mind of our generation the late Stephen Hawking, said something like that. Well, if nothing else is absurd the Sri Lankan polity is absurd.

In such a context, Ranil Wickremesinge’s very dress appearance seems an anachronism. His effort toward installing good governance systems  in the island is subject to ridicule by our pollies. Even most of his own party men do not grasp  the need for such systems. The substantial gains that his government has realised thus far, goes undervalued. Ranil’s  farseeing economic policies and strategies are just a nuisance as they have “no impact” on the voting public.

Bond Issue

To be honest, Ranil Wickremesinghe hasn’t been all that cautious about many of his doings. The Presidential Commission into the so-called bond scam, had suggestively advised the Prime Minister to be more cautious about his appointments. (I say, ‘so-called,’ because I remain not convinced that any scam has in fact taken place here.) The Commission hasn’t, however, found him or any Minister as being involved in the ‘scam.’ Ravi Karunanayake’s issue is not directly related to the incident and so the Commission wanted allegations relating to the latter separately investigated. Be that as it be, the fact is that the JO campaign has succeeded in making the Prime Minister perceived by the public as a guilty party. It is the success of showmanship  over fact.

Bullseye of Opposition Attack

Ranil is dragged into that focus all the time and  attempts are being made to disgrace him. All Opposition guns are on Ranil. As a historical fact, we can recall how Ranil Wickremesinghe had been the bullseye of  the Rajapaksa attack men men even during the time the latter had been in government. He was labelled a failure; unable to win elections. This criticism had being contrary to the position that he had succeeded in being Prime Minister three or four times. At the last General Elections, Ranil broke all records by registering over 500,00 votes in his electoral district. This was no mean achievement.

About twenty years in opposition, Ranil managed to keep his party together without breaking up against the intense manipulative pressure of the Rajapaksa government. His party leadership  was challenged twice  by his own men. However, Wickremesinghe showed considerable understanding and emotional management to  override all these attempts-subtle and direct- and to ride high. In this way, Ranil’s political resilience is outstanding. One cannot easily put Ranil down as, like a rubber ball pressed to sink in water, he keeps coming up. He had predicted the UNP will form government two years before it did this time and so that happened.

From this perspective, the myriad attempts by Opposition over the years to target Ranil Wickremesinghe speaks more of his attackers than of him; for that demonstrates that Opposition’s number one bogeyman is none other than Ranil Wickremesinghe. That throws light on Ranil’s effectiveness and not of his weaknesses.

In fact, the Opposition shows poverty in their futile efforts to paint Ranil Wickremesinghe as a corrupt man. There have never been any charges of corruption against him. No charges of murdering dissentient journalists. On the other hand, of Mahinda Rajapaksa we have a totally opposite picture. The former Chief Justice Sarath N Silva openly alleged that Mahinda, while he was Prime Minister, had been seriously guilty over siphoning off Tsunami funds to private bank accounts. The present Commission about serious financial crimes have recommended that Mahinda and some other ministers of his regime should be deprived of their civic rights. White vans and gruesome murders marked the former regime.

The contrasting picture is that  Ranil Wickremesinghe still remains Mr Clean. He is also Mr Cool. Ranil Wickremesinghe’s political skills are proven. So is his vision capacity. To me, the most important thing about this much maligned and underestimated leader is that he stands for the  values  that can keep Sri Lanka together. Ranil Wickremesinghe, even in his depressed moments, never resorted to racial slogans; never touted Sinhala Buddhist nationalism. He is provenly multicultural. He is also modern in economic and political outlook.

To add to these attributes, Ranil is one of the handful in Parliament who possess knowledge of social and economic policy. The nation needs him to remain. He may groom a successor – that’s a different matter. The fact is that he is still needed if Sri Lanka  is to be saved from the mad world of selfish loonies. Among all the bunch of political leaders that Lanka now has, Ranil Wickremesinghe stands alone – still unmatched.

RW is badly needed by Pohottuwa. No confidence motion is an each way bet. The longer he stays and mess up better it is for Pohottuwa. JO guys know this.

RW may know economic policy (I doubt it) but he cannot implement.

He is a dead man walking…

      Mr Shyamon Jayasinghe,

Simply put, what you have written is the truth. ……….. although, most times, you are an irrationally partial Ranil supporter. :))

Ranil is not perfect; no man is …….. but he attracts more ire than his actions deserve; he is a guy most Lankans love to hate. ……….. I think, the main reason is, …….. his persona is such ………. more than from any other politician, people expect from him to deliver …….. and he falls short time and time again.

When the people who attack Ranil with such venom …….. fail to attack the Rajapakses for their much more greater crimes of murder/swindling/corruption/scams/nepotism/you-name-it ………. their slip is showing …………. just look around; the same culprits day in day out …….. :))

Anyway ……… Ranil hasn’t done badly in the last 3 years ……. not a single journalist is dead …… and no white vans roaming ……. election was the most peaceful and fair ………

I wouldn’t feel too good if I look away and don’t support what you have written ………. because it’s the truth.

Can’t let a man be maligned unfairly ………… especially when the maligning is done by crooked humbugs.

I don’t give a fig about anyone or anything ……….. for me truth is supreme.

Let Lanka go to hell …… if past history is any guide it surely will …….. Don’t even bother to read the comments …………………

Just keep on speaking the truth …….. and don’t let any of these little pipsqueak who see only the tiny speck in Ranil’s eye and not the planks in the serial-killers Rajapakses’ eyes …….. intimidate you.

And may the Buddha bless you for standing up for the truth!

      Truth

And I’ll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it

And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it

Peace! Dear brothers! ……….. May the truth and only the truth infuse your true Buddhist hearts ………

Ranil’s personality has gentlemanly qualities but, since he is belonging to the Govigama Mafia Crime Syndicate that which has hijacked the fate of the entire population by holding onto the supreme political power since the independence, he is playing POLITICAL DIRTY GAMES by using the Muslim community as the pawns/sacrificial lambs slaughtered at the altar of the EVIL SINHALA NATIONALISM to satisfy the evil souls of the MASTERS in TEL VIV, Washington, London evil axis who wants ISLAMOPHOBIA and the WAR ON ISLAM happening in real time with full devastation like in Myanmar Rakhine State and Syria.

The LATEST attack method the GOVI system devised against the Muslims is the deployment of POLICE units to arbitrarily arresting MUSLIM boys and girls by using NARCOTIC DRUGS dECOYS put forcibly in their posession under which they are then taken into custody. This happened about 4 days ago in Kolonnawa near the Cemetery. The Narcotics Terror Unit that use this tactics to trap innocent victims and then use blackmails to syphon off ransome money to release them. They are now recently, after the Kandy riots, using this state terror tactics to intimidate the minorities as THE STATE HAS NOT ESTABLISHED a system to check on these criminal elements that uses the Law Enfircement power for these kinds of GROSS HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS.

correction: It has happened in KADUWELA and not in KOLONNAWA. 08 boys, all of them Muslims on 4 motorbikes, have been covering under a shade waiting by the roadside till the rain stops to proceed on their journey going together on some friendly trip. Then the Narcortics unit on a Jeep came by and summoned the boys to have a body check. Then in front of their eyes, the criminal cops having a parcel which was in their possession and forcibly dragged one of the boy’s bag and stoved the pack inside while boys struggled to defend themselves. And the next thing, they’ve been told that they under the custody for which they will be prosecuted for a crime they did not commit but vindicated in it due the Fascistic Nature of the Sri Lankan State and its racistic apparatus that has given full freedom to their state-terror actors to do what they like. The boys are demanded Rupees Two Lakhs per head as RANSOME MONEY to release them. The parents paid and the children released by these MAFIA. The judiciary, as always, one sided, mechanically driven with no empathy for the victims, will have no hesitation in punishing anyone who is being presented as criminals by these state terror outfits that cooks up evidences and proofs in their favour. The more UN gives oxigen to this evil system and regime (either SLFP led or UNP led govts.) the more people are victimised with no help coming from anyone. The victims are always left alone to suffer with no defense by the POWERFUL SINHALA NATIONALIST FORCES run evil system they call as (the fake) Democratic, Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka which is FASCIST in its core of governance.

The Sinhala medium Youtube channel “SL Vlog” published a video specially on the above subject of the “The Narcotic Bureau Mafia outfit and their Ransome Money business”….. Dharshana, the presenter gives a comprehensive and full details of how this state institute run MAFIA unit carry out this scam that has victimised hundreds of innocent children who knows nothing about how to face such a sudden devastating encounter when its perpetrat by the LAW ENFORCEMENT unit of the government. The innocent children or the youngsters are terrified and they are forcibly made to confess guilty to the crimes they never committed.
Please check the SL Vlog for more detsils….it a Sinhala language Video under the title of “ Surabadhu Thrastha Kalliya Saha Jaraawa Keymay Kramaweydaya” (Narcotics Terror Outfit and Its method of daylight robbery from the public)….. https://youtu.be/UQFlgZZ-YUg

This has been going on for years. These tactics and methods were used on the Tamil civillians for years. When they are arrested there is no one who could help them. Because, the Judiciary is mostly run by the Sinhala Nationalist forces comprising racist POLITICIANS and its Govigama Elite controlled. So, the Sinhala Only Zionist agenda is implimented with ease. When a MONK is arrested, reluctantly by the Sinhala Nationalist Forces run Police in unavoidable situation, he is either released on the spot or the Judiciary is ever ready to give them the fastest bail system existing in the world, which is given by the Sri Lankan Judges.

What a joke! Shyamon a retiree most probably living on Australian tax payer money including the money paid by large number of Sri Lankan students studying there and doing part time work as property cleaners, night time petrol shed attendants etc (all of which ultimately ends up as tax in OZ govt coffers to be paid to loonies like Shyamon) obviously has lot of time to write such crap only him and some other mongals would believe. The larger population of Sri Lanka are much wiser and doesn’t share that sentiment as evidenced by the recent LG polls. 19th amendment has given lot of protection to Ranil (It was passed mainly for that purpose). All those legal protections would not be worth of the paper they are written when the electorate looses confidence in a politician. Ranil has lost that public confidence. His political life is on borrowed time courtesy of 19A.

Teflon Ranil will live on because in our Sri Lankan haamu environment political ancestry counts for much, maybe everything; and Ranil’s ancestry is packed with enough connections to make a central nervous system look simple.

RW is now too long in the tooth to take a proper job. His world will crumble if he does not enjoy the kudos that comes with political office. Even Leader of the Opposition.

shyamon must have got beans after writing glowingly about sajith last time article.Trying to now undo that by even more glowing tributes to ranil.Only reason ranil is needed now by the UNP is to protect those involved in the bond scam especially mahendran who could spill the beans.

BTW what has happened to the arrest warrant issued for mahendran. Is PM of srilanka speaking to the PM of singapore about that and to look into it..We know the answer don’t we?Ranil is needed for sure.

After reading this, even I like Ranil. But we must never get away from the essential truth that is needed to secure our Motherland: Our country is of 2,500 years of Buddhist socialism. Capitalism, and the Masses suffer. Masses cannot be whipped so a set of clean white fresh mouthwashed Ranils are created. The dirtier man is more true to the social good and the enduring Lankan soul.

All this present day bungling and mayhem could have been averted if only PM had stuck to his much hyped honesty and political expertise, but unfortunately it was not to be ,even before the ink could dry he had chosen to jettison the one and only Election promise people were yearning for and one that these two present leaders too were hell bent on making promise after promise that they will bring all perpetrators before the Law. Now it is evidently clear the two leaders have taken the unsuspecting voters for a ride. The unfolding events have proved beyond any trace of doubt the treacherous plan has been hatched with the connivance of other agents of the past regime. Even the die hard UNPer. is constrained to accept this reality. If PM had maintained his decorum and remained unmindful of President’s dubious conduct of Yahapalanaya. today he would have been hailed as the Prince of
Democracy in Sri Lanka. He has missed the Bus. We hope the constitution will come to his rescue and would give him some solace. However there still remains an opportunity for him to recuperate from the present predicament if he is determined to put the law in motion. ” Truth will make you Free”

Mr J you may be right on some points you made. But, If he had any sense in Economics, his govt would not have made the following stupid mistakes in his Govt’s first budget that made the country’ financial position much more worse than when MR lost: 1) Reduce fuel costs by so much, 2) Reduce duty for cars and 3) increased the salaries of Govt servants by Rs 10,000. None these three things help the poor nor the farmers, who infact are the vote base of MR. Then Mr J, he is not that good in politics either. Finally, he has acted stupid in handling the Bond Scam, his handling was so bad that I will not vote for him again and I am one of those 500,000. There must be thousands and we will know in 2 years.

Let us be realistic. We are a bankrupt country and has to borrow afresh even to repay maturing foreign debt. If foreigners lose confidence in us and withhold foreign investments into the bond and stock markets or in direct foreign investment we will not have the foreign exchange to repay our maturing foreign debt. Let MR take power and we will face a big foreign debt crisis. Our people perhaps realize this and hence they re-elect Ranil W, the saviour of the economy.

Guys though this comment dose not relate to this article I was amazed by what the election commissioner stated about the recent riots, In his own words ” the majority public is really feeling happy about the recent events and how the minority is being attacked”, He also mentioned ” with this mind set how the public is being manipulated by the current politicians for their own gains”, Though these are well known facts very few have the guts to say so. This I believe has been a curse through out Lankan history. After all who is the greatest player in this trade????? Sorry no rewards for this quiz. All you need to do is just sit back, relax and think about the prospects of it happening again????

This man is singing “Aney tikak indako” outside Ranil’s gate and had to be shooed off by security according to latest reports. He even sings this in his sleep we are told. He has some unspecified obsession with Ranil sometimes diagnosed as “worshipping old Royalists”!!

We now know what Mr Rajapakse and the party did for the country in the past . Mr Ranil doesn’t care a hoot for the poor and destitute people of Srilanka we have seen that during his whole 40years. he is cool to evade and go off that is correct.

Mr Ranil has this Royal mania and put royalists every where and anywhere and think they can rule and govern and do things which is wrong. There are honest pure people who have gone to other schools too have lots of real knowledge than royalist who have never seen the lives or living conditions of the poor.

also Mr Ranil wants to travel abroad many times and enjoy life when the country is having burning issues.

Mr Ranil doesn’t care about political looters or thieves.

BUT people want results so they will vote against Ranil then who will get the votes the pohottuwa means Mr Rajapakse not because He or his group is good.

Then came the bond issue and Mr Ranil is safe guarding the people who are involved in it. general public wont like

Then the major issue is not giving back or not respecting the wows (baara) that was done before the elections to get in to power. after getting elected all the Baara Haaras are forgotten as they have to travel abroad for conferences and weddings and UN and etc.etc.etc

The Great GODs cannot be cheated.

So all the Great GODs are angry because wows are not full filled. so unbelievable unexpected new problems comes like the bond scam etc.. and Sinhalese Muslim problem and what not.

So how can the country afford this.

Mr Ranil has to change a lot. He can do it. very easy it is not rocket science

I feel sorry for him honestly.

Mr wickremasinghe has not done any thing for the poor and destitute people of the whole country yet in his 40 odd years whether Sinhalese or Tamil or Muslim. He is a royalist who only want royalists around him in the Ministries and etc etc. Royalist have never seen the real lives of the poor people of srilanka.

Also lots of BAARA HAARA (wows) are not been redeemed and given back respectfully to the GODs yet who helped for them to come to power. So new and new problems comes to all of them.

I feel sorry for him and to the people of /srilanka.

“Mahinda R,will have no issue keeping and gaining popularity.
No wonder MR wont signed the NCM.”

Now that VP is no longer alive MR will increasingly find it difficult to buy votes in the North East. In 2005 MR’s majority was about 188,000. Jaffna district turnout was 1.21% of eligible voters. Vanni was 34.30%. VP’s gun pointed to the voters head did do well for MR.
MR should be proud of raising the price of a vote to about (185,000,000 X 1/188,000) = Rs 1000.
Will you join me in congratulating him?

    Stupid Tamil Vedda
You have confirmed what we have long suspected. Tamil voters are like cattle. They can be bought, sold, and exchanged! Democractic developments over the past 7 or 8 decades have obviously had no impact on Tamils who would prostitute themselves for money. Can This Stupid Vedda tell us how much was paid to each Tamil to vote for Sirisena in 2015?

The crap written by Shyamon doesn’t stack up to any globally accepted measure. All comparative economic indicators show under Ranil, the country has gone backwards. UNP has lost more elections under Ranil than any other leader. Except in 2001 perhaps in all other instances he became the PM thanks to external factors and not because of his personal leadership (i.e. “pin” agamati). The only record he possess is being the longest leader of a political party in modern functional democracies thanks to a pliant executive committee and an authoritarian party constitution which is not considered a healthy achievement in any democracy. Only in autocracies and dictatorships you get such longevity. In all counts Ranil is a failure. It might help Shyamon if he listens to what the UNP Panadura organiser Nandana Gunatilleke just said.

Shyamon’s crap reminds of things that school kids do to term report cards. Some would tell their parents that they have been marked out of 50 when their marks falls under 50 (say 40) though in fact the markings shown are out of 100. Some might add a digit next to their marks if it is less than 10 (say enter a zero next to 8 to show they have got 80 out of 100). This is exactly what Shyamon is doing adding a zero next to the single digit that Ranil hamu got in his report card. Those kids would have thought that they were able to deceive their parents with such action. Later on they would realise that only they themselves had got deceived at the end. May be some food for thought for Shyamon and his fellow travellers plus gullible readers who might want to believe such crap.
