By Faraz Salley –
In September of last year, security minister Ananda Wijepala informed Parliament that investigations into the 2009 assassination of prolofic journalist and human rights defender Lasantha Wickrematunge, has now been completed and handed to the Attorney General.
The assassination of Wickrematunge constitutes a flagrant and prima facie case of egregious corruption, precipitating a profound crisis of confidence in Sri Lanka’s justice system. This heinous crime has occasioned a grave and irreparable harm to the reputation of Sri Lanka’s law thereby undermining the very foundations of Sri Lanka’s legal system.
As the years drag on, the Wickrematunge family’s quest for justice remains an unfulfilled promise, a painful testament to the failures that have denied them closure. The decision by Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe to withdraw charges against a suspect earlier last year, citing lack of evidence, has only served to exacerbate the sense of outrage and betrayal felt by the Wickrematunges and the wider public.
This case is now representative of a critical juncture in Sri Lanka’s history, a moment of truth that will define the NPP’s commitment to the legal justice system. The Wickrematunge case is being viewed as the ultimate ‘litmus test’, a benchmark against which their credibility and effectiveness will be measured. The significance of this case goes beyond the individual circumstances of the murder. It speaks to the very nature of Sri Lankan society, where the law is subverted by the interests of the powerful. The failure to deliver justice in this case will only continue to perpetuate a culture of impunity, undermining the fundamental principles of the law.
In a country where dissenting voices have long been silenced through violence and intimidation, the case represents a watershed moment. It is a reminder that the pursuit of truth and accountability is not merely a imperative, but a necessary condition for the survival of true Sri Lankan leadership.
The Attorney General’s decision to withdraw charges in the case in February last year, sparked widespread outrage, with many condemning the move as a blatant attempt to shield those responsible for Lasantha’s murder. The timing of that decision, coming as it did on the heels of a new government’s ascension to power, only served to fuel suspicions of a cover-up.
The Wickrematunge case is powerful and symbolic of the need for a just society. The country’s legal institutions must demonstrate their commitment to justice, not merely through promises, but through concrete actions that deliver accountability. It is irrefutable that justice for Lasantha Wickrematunge is now a national imperative. The delivery of justice in this case would indeed send a powerful message to the Sri Lankan people, reaffirming their faith in our rule of law.
What is most damning is not merely the brutality of the crime, but the state’s sustained indifference to resolving it. Seventeen years on, the failure of governments to meaningfully conclude this investigation amounts to a abdication of responsibility. The continued delays, reversals, and institutional lethargy surrounding the Wickrematunge case expose a political culture that is either unwilling or incapable of upholding law.
The shame of this failure is compounded by the government’s repeated assurances, each met with renewed disappointment. Public declarations of progress, unaccompanied by tangible outcomes, have become a hollow ritual that insults both the intelligence and patience of the Sri Lankan public. Each year that passes without accountability deepens the perception that justice in Sri Lanka is selectively applied—swift for the powerless, endlessly deferred for those with political protection.
Lasantha would have been 67 years old today. His dedication to peace, reconciliation, and justice, driven by his purpose in breaking down religious and racial inequality and creating a new era in Sri Lanka must be carried on. He remains an iconic figure globally, inspiring movements for human rights. After years of governments failing to bring closure to Wickrematunge’s family, this current leadership is showing little progress thus far.
The assassination and now the NPP Government’s efforts to solve this case, represents a defining symbol, a symbol that will set the future and determine the government of Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s commitment to human rights. Justice for Wickrematunge is now seen as a necessary condition for the survival of Sri Lanka’s reputation on a international stage. In honour of his monumental service to the country, let us hope that Wickrematunge will finally receive the justice that he, his family and Sri Lanka deserves.

” Who is Lasantha? asked Gotabhaya Rajapakse from the BBC interviewer.
Did BBC rely?
The BBC did not reply.
Instead, Gotabhaya Rajapakse, the ex-President, replied and said:
” API THAMAI HONDATAMA KERUWE”. ” We Did It Best.
Does anyone need any more explanations and ‘Investigations’?

That is a clue, but inadequate to establish the crime in a court of law.

This is one of the hardest cases to solve in Sri Lanka which is why there have been so many delays. If the Lasantha case is solved then we can have full trust in the law and order.
The day Lasantha died was one of the darkest days in the history of Sri Lanka. His loss can never be replaced. May he receive justice very soon.

No offence intended to Lasantha.

What kind of message does it send out to the world if Sri Lanka can’t even solve the most high profile case? This is a real shame on the NPP government if they can’t fulfill this pledge

´MW,
.
Many grass-eaters in human disguise thought that the NPP government would take power immediately.
–
1) Cases involving LW and similar incidents would be appropriately examined.
2) Victims on Easter Sunday would receive some justice.
3) Ekanaligoda victims will be relieved by justice.
4) The other victims of abudicitons and extrajudicial killings would receive justice.
5) Essential goods will be exempt from taxes.
6) Education and health would be free of taxes.
7) Electricity rates would be reduced by one-third by implementing new, people-friendly procedures.
8) Fuel prices would drop dramatically, revealing what former Minister Kanchana stole, according to Jeppos.
9) The level of road discipline would be far higher than in Europe.
10)Salaries will be raised every six months.
11) New investments would provide new work opportunities.

What, other from “sowing hate across the country until earth slips hurt the people,” has Kebara-Kota, also known as Thambuththegama Pachoris, been able to change for the better?

Why is it so hard to solve, it is quite obvious who did it. Gothabhaya admitted to it on live TV. Besides Gothabhaya and his family should be put to the same form of justice that they practised on others.

Lasantha gave his life as a service to the people. He deserves justice first and foremost
/
leelagemalli / January 11, 2026
Ravindu.I’m sad to see the suffering of the LW-family… during the 89-92 insurrection, almost 30 000 youngsters were slaughtered by Jeppos and the government. I lost dozens of my peers because I was then a registered student at Pera.
Several of my peers in GALLE area were cruelly slain, and their flesh and bones were sent to their parents and relatives, who were eager for their sons to return home, claiming that it was wild boar meat.
After the relatives ate them, they were informed that they were eating the remains of their deceased sons. Unawatuna Douglas or the like Jeppo promoters knew in detail, but they would not open their mouths yet today. Might be, they are also among those who enjoyed “human meat” then.
.
Can you imagine?

This country is being ruled by a set of barbaric- JVP members today. Do you have the audacity to seek justice from past barbarians? PIGS MIGHT FLY!

Regardless of who someone was and how important they were all human lives lost is the same before the law which is why the powerful who killed Lasantha must also be treated like all other criminals because under the law all human life is the same regardless of their name or recognition.
Lasantha was the greatest son of Mother Lanka and it is a disgrace and a stain on the courts that they have not been able to bring the culprits to book.
May Allah grant Lasantha the highest place in Janna

I am sure the Royalty would be held accountable for the brutal murder of Lasantha. Then you could investigate about Tharaki’s murder and host of others.
I trust the AG would be convinced to order the Police to arrest those involved and charge them.
/
SJ / January 10, 2026
Tharaki’s murder involves another class of killers.
Then there are journalists killed by the LTTE itself. The list is as long as that for the state’s killing machine.
/
Ajith / January 13, 2026
“Tharaki’s murder involves another class of killers.”
You mean it involves the murder by Sinhala Buddhists and massacre of Tamils by SWRD Family in 1958? Who murdered SWRD.? Is it your special status to Sinhala Buddhism?

“In honour of his monumental service to the country, let us hope that Wickrematunge will finally receive the justice that he, his family and Sri Lanka deserves.”
Not only Wickrematune but also many are waiting for the justice. The fact is whether it is AKD/NPP or any other governments are signed up for the violent Sinhala Buddhism which is much above the law. The murder of Lasantha and others or even Easter Bombing were part of the same approval of violent Sinhala Buddhism. As long as it remains, AKD or his government can’t touch on the violent Sinhala Buddhism which is in power since 1948. The violent Sinhala Buddhism will remain until this country fall under the power of external powers as it happened for many centuries.

The GoSL should ANNOUNCE that those who carried out the murders torture and rapes at the INSTRUCTION of a superior will be spared of imprisonment if they become STATE WITNESSES.
We all know that the Rulers from 2005 to 2014 were behind these crimes.
It’s unfortunate for the SL tax payers that USA refused Gota R to its country
He has a case pending there too!

which filter ?

I have no doubt that if he (lester, nutless, the self-proclaimed interllectual, wealthy man in his dreams) was caught by multiple SURGERIES during the excision of his gentitals, he may have had several filters implanted in his body, but he is not the god to establish filters to avoid seeing some other people’s remarks. His incontinence troubles extend beyond his thoughts to a wide range of other areas.

Hello OC,
Don’t get envious, but I actually handled some moon rocks (about 1970) that were brought back by Apollo 11 (which I watched landing live on BBC TV). If I remember they were Basalts. I think they ended up in the Natural History Museum.
I also examined the inside of a Gemini Module when I was in Oklahoma. I think that they also used pure Oxygen like the Apollo Module that killed Grissom, White and Chaffee. Sadly one of my friends (a Professional Diver) was involved in the salvage of the Space Shuttle Columbia. Space exploration can be a dangerous occupation.
Best regards

Sri Lankan’s everywhere mourn Lasantha Wickramatunga a true warrior of justice loved and missed by all who care about human rights
/
Raj-UK / January 11, 2026
Lasantha was a prominent journalist, yet his murder remains unsolved. So is Shafter’s mysterious death but officially, a suicide which is laughable because why a man trying to commit suicide should go the the lengths to tie him self to the seat when there are easier ways to die. These came to light because they were high profile murders but if they can’t get justice, what can the average citizen expect?
If I remember correctly, a tamil mechanic was arrested on suspicion of Lasantha’s murder but he apparently died in custody by ‘natural causes’ & the only other suspect, an army hit man, was released due to no ‘witnesses’. The righteous NPP who promised justice to all those who suffered from criminal activity, seem to be back peddling when it comes to the rich & powerful, particularly, the Rajapakses. It’s time AKD & Co. prove their credibility by investigating all these ‘whitewashed’ cases & cracking the whip on the AG & the Police to do their job.
/
leelagemalli / January 11, 2026
Raj, although the late LW was a well-known journalist, many other journalists were murdered and physically assaulted, and many were induced to flee the country for safety. This country has a culture in which every adversary is targeted for political propaganda. We assumed that as soon as the NPP seized power, all of these injustices would be corrected one after the other; unfortunately, 16 months later, not even the most devastating disaster that claimed the lives of innocent worshipers, the Easter Sunday tragedy, had been resolved. There were no clues that may show the mastermind behind the accident. The AKD leadership is no better; he is only replicating the past in order to further their party propaganda.
/
Raj-UK / January 12, 2026
LM
AKD was very vocal, pointing out corruption when he was in the opposition but nothing came out from his allegations. His supporters may say that his hands were tied but now that he has all the power, he seems to be scared of, particularly, facing the Rajapakse wrath by provoking him. Maybe AKD has realised now that recovering syphoned out loot as promised is not as easy as he thought.
AKD & the NPP had no plan or strategy for any of their pledges. The Rajapakses & their cronies seem to be untouchable
/
Douglas / January 11, 2026
Raj-UK: I think you need to be updated on Lasantha’s murder case.
1. The ‘Mechanic’ (a Tamil) from the up-country was taken to custody because his ‘ID’ was used to obtain three ‘SIM cards’ by the Army personnel. He died in custody, during GR’s tenure as the Secretary of Defense. The ‘Death’ was never investigated and remains a ‘Mystery’.
2. Three Army personnel (if I remember correctly, one was from the Police) were arrested and committed to remand custody. Within a few months, the NPP Government was established, the present AG informed (in writing) the CID to ‘Withdraw’ the case. This sent ‘Shock Waves’ through the Government, the Media and the general public.
The president (AKD) summoned the AG and all other relevant officials to get an update on the matter. At this meeting, AG admitted that by an oversight of the appropriate section, this letter was sent and decided to ‘Withdraw’ the letter to the CID.
Accordingly, that letter was withdrawn, and the three are in remand pending a hearing.
Imagine the ‘Himalayan’ task of this Government to work with these types of ‘Bureaucrats’ in High Positions? Do critics see it?
/
Raj-UK / January 12, 2026
Douglas
Thanks for the update, I am usually not abreast of current news in SL.
Sure, its a Himalayan task to reform years of lethargy, corruption & cronyism but its incompetence & inefficient bureaucracy the reason for such ‘oversights’. How can we have any faith in our legal system with such mistakes? AKD should crack the whip & heads should roll if we are to see any positive changes. We have tolerated incompetence & inefficiency for too long.
/
Pundit / January 12, 2026
It is quite alarming that by an “oversight” an order had been given to withdraw the case against those charged with the heinous crime of murdering Lasantha in broad daylight.
Previously, this would have been labeled another unsolved murder or even a suicide, and the file made to go missing after a while.
