WikiLeaks: UN Commission Of Inquiry Was Not Necessary, But US Would Like Answers On What Took Place – US On Sri Lanka

“South and Central Asia Bureau Deputy Assistant Secretary Michael Owen agreed that access to the IDP camps was improved and resettlement and reconstruction activity would now be major humanitarian challenges. It was important to also emphasize the political dimension and give the Tamil community the sense that have a credible voice in government, said Owen.” the US Embassy Brussels informed Washington.

A classified diplomatic cable which details a meeting on United States – European Union on South and Central Asia, just after the Sri Lanka’s war. The Colombo Telegraph found the related ‘Confidential” US diplomatic cable dated June 22, 2009 from the WikiLeaks database.

The Embassy wrote; “The GOSL should now be considering how to accomplish reintegration of Tamils, including former paramilitaries and LTTE. While a UN Commission of Inquiry was not necessary, the U.S. would like answers on what took place in the north during recent weeks. As for reconstruction, the U.S. hoped to provide up to 10 million dollars in demining assistance and might also be able to contribute up to 50 million dollars for Sri Lankan IDPs over the next two years, depending upon Congressional budget decisions.”

US is only self serving, had there been a pro-US/West govt. in Sri Lanka ,no questions would have been asked.

To use your own logic here… The Rajapaksas are self serving too! So, what’s the problem here.

You see, Rajapaksas have been using their power to browbeat others, like Gen. Fonseka, Chief Justice, Opposition, or anyone else who is not their supporter. Now a bigger bully is having his way with the Rajapaksas.

All one has to say is… “Yeah, Karma is a bitch, ain’t it?”

lol the Sri Lankan voters didn’t go and vote for the Americans did they? You undemocratic despots needs to respect the democratic rights of citizen first before talking about justice and rule of law.

GOSL was pro West. It is only now that Rajapaksa regime is coming under pointed Western criticism that GOSL isn’t pro West.

Remember that GOSL was planning to allow US to use Trinco as a naval base in the early 80s, which is what made India create LTTE to thwart this GOSL-US plan. In return for GOSL allowing US to use Trinco, US would support GOSL and turn a blind eye towards Sinhala Chauvinism.

Throughtout the war period US and Britain supported GOSL ; Ex-SAS and US special forces and advisers training SL Army.

Prior to the Obama adminstration , you know the US supported Sri Lanka when you see how quiet the US has been regarding criticism of GOSL. Now compare this to how critical the US is of Iran. Only post 2009, the US has taken a critical stance of GOSL.

It is so surprising that you know how the west operate but still support their moves blinded by the urgency for a separate state. US just want to chase away China and have a puppet self governing state in north of Sri Lanka bc it is easier than controlling the central government.

Yet the tamil nationalists are again falling for the trap of US/UK like they fell for the trap of India in 80s.

They desire a puppet self governing state in north than an unpredictable puppet central government. A lot easier for them.

US is giving pennies and dimes as aid. But still want to claim super power. Comapre it with China for what it gave. US used to borrow money from China and bomb Iraq while looking for WMD. It creates terror groups like Al-Quida and fights against the same.

China doesn’t give anything; they simply invested in SL to reap greater benefits. What moneys China has “given” SL will be paid back many times over.

In many South East Asian countries, the Chinese are resented for their economic domination of the local economies. Sri Lanka will get hosed by them as Lankans simply are no match for Chinese business accumen and power.

Hey Romeo, Chinese are not spring chicken like you. They don’t waste a single yuan for charity on fools of Sri Lanka. They are on a lucrative business deal and no aid.

Who asks for charity except respecting our sovereignty? Chinese loans are all commercial loans, nothing to feel ashamed of that.

Yet more evidence how The King & his court of corrupt cronies have utterly mismanaged both domestic and international affairs.

Sri Lanka’s ally USA was turned into a potential diplomatic foe by Rajapassa lunacy, nepotism & lawlessness.

Current regime in SL must realize “Condom Theory” practiced by them cannot be applied to all situations.

    Cheers!

” Sri Lanka’s ally USA was turned into a potential diplomatic foe by Rajapassa lunacy, nepotism & lawlessness.”

Absolutely correct. The US supported Sri Lanka even before the emergence of LTTE, especially because GOSL was planning on allowing US to use Trinco as a base.

The US would have turned a blind eye to a lot of GOSL’s crimes against Tamils if Rajapaksa regime weren’t soo belligerent.

Lol US/UK realized that LTTE, the adopted child of India cannot be trusted and opted for more civilized separatists like Sampanthan, wigneshwaren, etc.

You want our government to appease west by giving all Praba demanded to Sampanthan. Like you can even predict the disastrous effects of a puppet state of US/UK/Tamil-Nadu in a small island.

Get real, at least Rajapakshe cronies are sensitive towards national security.

SL should have its own Guantanamo bay for “terrorists”.

Dont they already have a more efficient Sri Lankan-Guantonomo where not only Tamils but Muslims and Christians are held and raped!

Another recommendation for Pillay’s next report. Shutdown the Sri Lankan version of Guantanamo where ever it is located at.

A country like Srilanka always rely on external factors. The demise of LTTE is solely due to the international purpose. When the war ended the gov did’nt take any sense as a government. Evidence shows that most seniors of the government ordered to do all these rapes and killings; even prior to kill VP’s son Mr president was on the phone to approve it. Justice need to be heard.

This is the kind of lies that kept the war going for 25 years. The diaspora lies and deceptions have started in another round.

Yeah, we like to know what happened during the last 100 years in Europe, Japan, Latin America (especially Chile), Africa (remember Lumumba), Vietnam, the Middle East, and recently in Iraq, Libya and Afghanistan. The US wants to be the global policeman, but the majority of Americans don’t know anyplace beyond their local mall and the beer store. Many of them haven’t even heard of a country called Sri Lanka. Their idea of culture is Miley Cyrus, hip hop and WWF. Today an average American university student cannot read or write properly. Give the world a break from your stupidity, you Americans.
