Will The Old Order Accept AKD Victory?

By Ameer Ali

Dr. Ameer Ali

The Presidential Election on 21 September 2024, if allowed to take place peacefully as scheduled, would be one like no other, because it is not simply going to be a choice among 39 individuals, which itself is a record, but more than that it will be a contest between two orders or systems and between two generations. It would present voters an opportunity to decide whether to retain a political culture and its associated system of governance, which is notoriously prone to nepotism, corruption and nonaccountability or to throw away that culture and lead this multicultural polity along the path of a reformed democracy based on a new constitution and devoid of any ethnonational or religious bias. The need for this choice is no doubt the crave of a politically awakened young generation which, having witnessed during its lifetime the simultaneous erosion of economic prosperity and disciplined governance in this country rose in revolt in 2022 to demand system change. Thus, the forthcoming election provides an opportunity not simply to choose an individual but to decide whether the country continues with its old order or opts for a new one.

Among the 39 contenders, of whom a vast majority have entered the race not to win but to prevent the one they hate from winning, only three have any chance of crossing the line: sitting president Ranil Wickremesinghe (RW) who claims to be a neutral candidate with UNP label, Sajit Premadasa (SP) of SJB and Anura Kumara Dissanayaka (AKD) of NPP. Among the three, the first two have nothing to say about system change, but with undeliverable economic promises employ every tactic available in Sri Lanka’s electioneering dictionary to attract voter support. But the third has made a firm commitment from the beginning to change the political culture of this country and he is promising to achieve it through a social revolution. His is a radically different manifesto reflecting the demands of a new generation. His economic focus also differs from what the other two are offering.

RW, the most senior of the three is a proven failure in politics who became a president by accident.  Although he owes his presidency to the Aragalaya youth, he was the one who thanklessly turned against them and ended their historic revolt no sooner he was enthroned. RW was schooled in the politics of his grand uncle JR, who introduced the executive presidency on the ideological platform of Sinhala-Buddhist supremacy. JR disliked making political deals with leftists and ethnic minorities, and his system of proportional representation was to ensure that parliamentary democracy would always operate in the primary interest of the majority community. In a sense, several of the problems with which the country is currently grappling could be placed at the door of JR’s presidency. On the contrary, RW is proving to be a deal maker and prepared to make deals even with the devil to win this race. He is a beneficiary of the existing system and wouldn’t dare changing it. His campaign is therefore dominated by what he calls as economic achievements, which simply means that he was the one who invited IMF to take charge of economic reparation and decided to follow scrupulously its reform agenda. The two budgets which he prepared as Finance Minister were based almost entirely on IMF’s direction. True, there had been a degree of economic stability and growth achieved largely through CBSL’s tough monetary policy and capital control, higher indirect taxes and severe belt tightening imposed on middle and low-income earners. But still poverty rate is remaining stubbornly high at around 23 to 25 percent. This according to RW is unfortunate and he wants the sufferers to wait until 2048 to bask in his economic paradise. His entire political campaign is therefore dominated by two features: scare mongering about a possible return of the dark past under a different president and tantalising the masses with undeliverable promises like 25,000 rupees increase in salaries to all public servants and higher basic wage for the plantation workers. Even IMF would be alarmed at such promises, which would sabotage its strategy for fiscal consolidation. IMF is also insisting on serious reforms to improve governance, but RW is understandably silent on this, because such reforms would remove the leverage the system has for political survival.

The second of the three, SP, has nothing original to contribute for a better future. The campaign by him and his lieutenants is almost entirely concentrated in attacking RW’s tax measures and their adverse impact on the poor. They promise to renegotiate with IMF to reduce the tax burden without rebalancing it, and like RW, they too believe in the magic of foreign investment and high technology to achieve economic prosperity. At least RW has a timeline to reach his goal, but this group doesn’t have any. Also, on what specific areas that foreign investors should be encouraged to invest and what would happen to the stock of labour and skill made redundant through high-tech industries are issues left unexplained.

SP too is silent on system change, because like RW, he is also a beneficiary of the prevailing political culture. Hectic cross overs from party to party and hasty deals with business minded ethnic and factional groups are an index of the extent of leverage that current political culture permits. Why then should he change it?

In contrast to RW and SP, AKD stands tall on the issue of system change. As pointed out he and his NPP have declared categorically that they would transform the political culture of this nation through social revolution. In layperson’s language it means clean governance with accountability, an essential ingredient to any level of economic success. NPP has also promised to bring to books those who were responsible for causing the economic disaster which left with no alternative but to invite IMF. This political determination has sent jitters within his opponents’ camps and hence their vicious propaganda against AKD and his NPP. These propagandists are not criticising NPP’s program as such but engaging instead in scaremongering by reminding voters of JVP’s bloody past when AKD and his colleagues were not even teenagers. To the critiques of NPP history remains static.

On the economic front also NPP has a different focus but with a commitment to renegotiate with IMF. Unlike SJB’s renegotiation NPP’s focus is not only about taxes but also about alternative strategies to redirect resources to strengthen the local production sector. This makes lots of sense given the current economic turbulence causing inflationary pressures, rising cost of living and sliding growth rates in developed economies. Sri Lanka’s apparel exports are already facing declining demand due to this turbulence. Unlike RW’s and SP’s views about an open economy AKD’s imply structural changes. This contributor had already published a piece in this journal on China’s bird cage economic model. It was through that model China eventually emerged as an open economy and world’s second economic powerhouse. NPP’s economic reforms seem to follow that path. With structural changes even IMF reforms would deliver better and lasting results to the economy.

In sum, NPP’s system-change and economic reforms minus a few populist promises ensure a modestly achievable target for a country caught in poly-crisis in comparison to the undeliverable and dreamy paradise guaranteed by its opponents. But the question is whether the guardians of the old order would allow NPP to cross the line. There are also foreign powers with vested interests observing closely local developments. US, China, India and Israel for various reasons must be closely watching the winning prospects of their favourable fighter in the ring. Nothing is certain until the election takes place as scheduled. From all count it is going to be an election like no other.

If you were not so partisan, Dr. Ameer Ali, you would realise that what the NPP is promising an even dreamier paradise than the other two main contenders, who with some variations, are promising more of the same.
And a simple answer to your question: my guess is that no, the old order won’t accept a NPP victory. If Sri Lanka is in fact located strategically in the Indian Ocean, as everyone keeps saying, the geopolitical powers probably already have a strategy in place to prevent this victory. If that doesn’t work, they are likley to bring about a regime change, when the time is ripe. After all, that’s how the world works and that is how our recent history has worked.

“the geopolitical powers probably already have a strategy in place to prevent this victory.”
      .
Yes. They have been working day and night to prevent the status quo from being changed.
      .
Their preferred others are Sarath Fonseka, Dilith Jayaweera, and a lesser known individual called Nirmalan Dhas.
      .
Google him for more information about him or ask Mano Ganesan or Sumanthiran for more details about the plot to make him the President and what they did to accomplish it.
      .
Dammika Paniya the other joker bolted at the last moment for unknown reasons.

“If that doesn’t work, they are likley to bring about a regime change, when the time is ripe.”

      It’s ripe I think.

“Will The Old Order Accept AKD Victory?”

What do they want? …….. Get their houses burned down again …… then run and hide?

Why didn’t Ranil hold Provincial Councils elections when they were due soon after the Aragalaya, when he became president?

The election results would’ve shown he has minuscule support among the citizens and whatever “legitimacy” – due to a stupid kink in the constitution – he had, would’ve gone up in smoke. ……. And who has the overwhelming support of the people and who should be their legitimate representatives.

This election – if held fairly and freely – gives genuine legitimacy to the people’s will.

And Ranil is history. ……. And if the laws of the land are applied without fear or favour …… heading for jail ……. for a long stint.

A deterrent should start somewhere ……. to discourage future shenanigans …….. and what better candidate than Ranil to make an example of? …….. A weak man, who would have very few friends left, once his “power” of bribing is gone.

That alone would send any new president’s popularity sky high!

Except in a little corner of Germany …….. and Bandarawela …….. but they have each other for company. ……. That’s one friend more than Ranil’ll be left with! :)))

Some people are critical of the Bangladesh Aragalaya …….. and the Lanka Aragalaya ……. they don’t realize social transformations don’t happen like nice weddings because of the inherent reactionary elements’ reluctance for change – they don’t want to lose their privileges. They will do anything to thwart change to maintain their social privileges/advantages.

Big social changes/transformations mostly happens in chaotic/uncontrollable manner/form.

All the leaders of the French Revolution, they themselves, got guillotined. But the aftermath – long term – of the French Revolution, for France, Europe and the rest of the world was monumental. Societies made the transformation form hereditary monarchies/aristocracies to democracies …….. and the power was mostly vested in the middle-class.

The transformations could be made very easily ………. if people can think.

Ancient people worshipped Pagan Gods for thousands of years …….. before simple passage of time made it dawn of them what they are doing was silly. …….. But they would’ve realised it much much sooner, if they had stopped to think without blindly following customs.

Transforming Lankan society is not that difficult if people think ………. Getting from A to B …….. or even Z can be a straight line. …….. Without all the diversions happening now.

Unfortunately Lankan intellectuals are still worshipping Pagan Gods.

For example …….. Lester, who fancies himself as an intellectual – I’ve no doubt he is – still worships STEM, AI etc. as Pagan Gods. ……. For himself, he hasn’t cut the distance between man and Science. For him, they are up there to be worshipped as Gods.

            Such are Lankan intellectuals!

Then DTG has his own Gods.

I’m just waiting for the day to dawn on a Godless Lanka ……. where people think for themselves …….. without divine or anyone’s guidance ….

“Education” gives us the tools and the initial impetus …. but it’s our responsibility to learn to think ……….

nimal fernando, DTG worships the Creator God Jehovah who has a plan for his creation and said in Isa.45,5 “I am the Lord. There is no other” Isa.49,25 says he saves our children and 54,13 says our children have peace. Psalm 103,19 says “His kingdom rules over all” Also in Ps.115,3 he does what pleases him. So why look for any other.

DTG as you well know the OT is full of the monstrous cruelty of Jehovah. Open any page and you find it. It amazes me how people like you can be so blind to the obvious. The Bible in summary is just threats and promises, that’s all.

DTG, those who cannot contradict an assertion themselves often direct one to read this or that book.
                    .
Its all very simple , is the OT filled with the monstrous cruelty of Jehovah or not?
A one word answer will suffice.

I too once thought PCR would be a good candidate to one day lead the country, only to be proven wrong. He has no integrity, and is greedy and gullible. It appears to be possible to buy him over with the right price and bribe- particularly with a sexual bribe. Given the right carrot he appears to have no qualms to throw the country under the bus. Him and a group of ppl that includes Ranil, his secy Saman Ekanayake, Chief Of Staff, Sagala, his (Sagala’s) brother, Bank of Ceylon, Chairman, Kavan, Ravi Karunanayake, and a person called Sugath Hewapathirana, formerly the General Secretary of a political party called Patriotic United National Party and a Rajapaksa lackey, but now has joined Ranil’s Puluwan Sri Lanka alliance; with others have agreed to crash, Bank of Ceylon, for a 14% cut of the 4 billion USD emergency fund facility that India extended to Sri Lanka to recover from banckruptcy. A pact has been made with the Indian Intelligence and perhaps with Jaishankar during one of his roving visits to Sri Lanka to this end. This os the kind of political leaders we have here in Sri Lanka.

The Old Order will accept an NPP victory, because it isn’t a monolithic club . Its members include all sorts of fascists, free-martketeers, racists, Mahanayakas , etc.
The NPP too is made up of incompatible elements . You can have a part-time tuition master as Finance Minister when other members of his party run Trade Unions which want to ban private education.
The Old Order doesn’t have to do anything. An NPP regime will not last even as long as Gota’s.

      The “Old Order”,
within the country, is certainly getting desperate about how to stop AKD, but they simply lack the numbers to do so.
      .
As for the Old Order outside the country, if they can accept a “Demala Kella” (Tamil girl), as POTUS, they will come to accept AKD.

        Sinhala_Man,

Preventing an election victory is not only about numbers, there are other means at their disposal. Of course, rigging numbers is also a possibility.
Potus-to-be is of both Tamil and Jamaican origin and fully supports the capitalist system – in fact, she is contesting with huge corporate backing. The same cannot be said for the NPP who claim to have a socialist orientation but who knows? Perhaps they have already promised Trinco harbour, since Hambantota. Colombo and Kankasanturai harbours are already spoken for. Anything can happen in politics, especially if the NPP gets a landslide. As the saying goes, power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Ajith, in SARC politics breaking parties is not just a talent, but absolute necessity. This happens frequently in India, both at national and state levels. Good old parties with proven track record, AIADMK, Maharashtra congress / Shiv Sena, Karnataka BJP are now split into many factions. Surprisingly it’s less compared to India and Lanka, in other SARC countries. Mahinda was a king, but now Ranil is paying him back.

Thank you CHIV, NV and Raj. May our people be blessed with intelligence. I am scared to death these days watching the news from SRI LANKA on Youtube. Always truths are twisted and people are not well provided with facts.

Especially may our SM (the boastful man, but never saw a western country by his own eyes, nevertheless standing against western virtues of democracy for no constructive reasons) or similar stupid idiots be blessed with intelligence. .

I am surprised that SM cannot open his slit eyes yet today to see the bigger picture. These men are the real threat to this country

We will fall into the crocodile mouth in 25 days if YOUTUBE opinion polls would relect the truths of the cross section of the society. . If JVP was our leader, we would surely be called the “people of El Salvador”. No more recommendations from the IMF would work, which means no more tranches to meet the basic needs of the bankrupt nation.
                    *
AKD’s palatable stories are based on numerous claims that everyone except their party men would be fine after another 5 years of working together to revive the economy for the future of this country whose foreign exchange reserves and all other indicators are clearly bankrupt. The situation is comparable to admitting a patient to the intensive care unit, but the rescue team is in turmoil due to various other chaos and problems.

                    Some facts about SRILANKA:
                    .
The presidential election in September 2024 is about choosing the candidate who is the lesser of several evils.

We have 4 major candidates in the race for the 2024 presidency in the country whose last penny has been looted by Rajapkashes and their hedegemonists.

Ironically, even today Rajapkshes are considered as gods by the people of the south and other rural areas of Sri Lanka. People are more indifferent than ever. Hence RAJAKPAKSHE FACTION is significant in this election.

These voters would not change their minds even if they were raped 24/7 by RAJAPKASHE thugs. This is due to the effects of “permanent brainwashing based on blatant lies mixed with Sinhala Buddhism over a long period of time”.

According to Sri Lankan YOUTUBERS, the leading candidate is none other than AKD.

THIS ELECTION IS MORE DECISIVE THAN IT SEEMS BECAUSE SRILANKA IS ONLY HANGING BY A HAIR: IF THE NEXT TRANCHE OF THE IMF IS CUT, THE NATION WILL BE IN DARKNESS AGAIN BY JULY 2022 AS PEOPLE HAVE PREDICTATED.

The biggest question is whether AKD will bring LEADERSHIP with whom he can perform miracles and surpass the level of the incumbent president he has achieved in the last two years.

                      – Fairy tales will not get us anywhere forward. What we need now is the election of a leader who can do what RW has done so far or who can perform great miracles like bringing in more investments and dollars to replenish the country’s foreign exchange reserves.

THE ANSWER AKD’s ABILITIES IS CLEARLY NO. IF AKD WOULD MAKE WONDERS – PIGS MIGHT FLY Basta !

Criminals should be punished but not at this critical juncture of the country.
First things first, save the economy and then try to punish all those who owe punitive measures for their serious crimes.
                      :
IN FACT, only a leader who has proved his ability once can do the job. RANIL has done it and he should be the elected leader even after 21 September 2024.

SRILANKA has multi-faceted problems accumulated over the years and no single leader can solve them all within two years. If anyone expects that RW could have done better, it is just a fantasy that would never be possible even with a miracle healer.

Raj-UK, although the Heads of schools in the UK, are usually called “Headmasters”, in Sri Lanka almost all schools have “Principals“. The guy administering a University is the Vice-Chancellor; a Chancellor is only a figure-head, usually to be seen at the Annual Convocation.

                      Dear Readers,
This is another comment that clearly proves that SM is just an ignorant citizen (brainwashed by AKDISM) who doesn’t seem to respect the facts when he rushes into a comment.

He is no different from PORNO BOY Ruchira who has proven himself to be a mental patient in everyone’s eyes.
                      .
Why on earth do these men behave so naively even in their later life?

                      .
Also, the man who claims to be Sinhalese has spent his entire life in SRILANKA. I only spent my first two decades there. This man’s master’s thesis should be based only on “searching for gossip about some handpicked individuals away from hero worship”:

My father was a ‘headmaster’ of a Govt. school but usually referred to as ‘Principal’. I assumed the Law College also had a Headmaster as the most senior member of the staff. By the way, in UK, its usually ‘Head Teacher’ (probably due to the gender assumption of headmaster) & ‘warden’ is the person in charge of a boy’s school or male orphanage but St Thomas’ has lower, middle & upper school headmasters.

Whatever you want to call the senior staff member, the Rajapakse brat had the privilege of an air conditioned room & the most senior staff member at his side to keep him company, maybe as a precaution of being stressed out during the exam. If I am not mistaken, the other Rajapakse brat has a couple of PhDs under his belt & no doubt, had a similar academic to keep him company when writing his thesis. Obviously, Premadasa jnr didn’t have these privileges at LSE, & come exams, he was too stressed & didn’t graduate. On the other hand, AKD is a science graduate but have always been in politics &, probably deprived another poor sod a place in Uni. Waste of talents?

It is noteworthy that Professor GLP has given honor to the country by obtaining advanced degrees from world-renowned universities such as Oxford, but he is setting a low-level role model for Sri Lankan parliamentarians. This should be spelled out in Sri Lankan media, but I don’t see it.

Prof. GLP always joined the bang bandwagon when he instantly thought he could make a prominent presence in politics. He doesn’t mind demonizing our youth.

This harmed the academic world more than any others done before. Saddest reality is, that Now our youths don’t care much about doctorates and professorship titles, even SM or similar naive individuals go after worshiping the holders of those titles. Unfortunately, SM or the like are sick forever, incurable with their ingrained stupidity. He or the kind to trust AKD with his sinhala-speeches show us the level of SM’s naivity levels.

when it comes to proving that what they are trolling is right, none of them will come back to you with the answers.
This is a common trait of LESTER, Sinhala Man, Ajith and Porno Boy Ruchira (unfortunately a very expensive medical degree at the cost of Sri Lankan tax money). I have raised the question of how AKD and his jokers would perform magical miracles when they seize power on September 22, 2024 and it has always been paid with total ignorance. So the fear of demons in our minds regarding the next disaster for this gullible nation is growing hourly.
          .
These men are good to be genetically related to AKD who has always depended on donors to sustain his daily life.
Also AKD has never proved that he was an exceptional Agriculture Minister.
Also, the JVPrs have failed to improve the progressive thinking of the peasants, despite the fact that they were born and brought up in RURAL corners of the island, hitherto afflicted by various malevolent forces.

Not colonial invasions, but the damage done by Sinhala Buddhists, who are not genuine Buddhists, is too much as they are cutting their own necks in terms of the progress of the nation.

Ruchira, caste-based bias will always play a role in this country as no one can wipe out Nikaya established by the Kandyan Malwatte and Asgari and the low country govi Nikaya. Amarapura Karavas try to be above the Durawas and other southern coastline castes. As long as Buddhism is the major religion here, caste-based bias will remain as no one can change their caste.

Also the establishment of a Central Bank wuth the help of US economost, John Exter ditching away the Currency Board that the Brits have existed. A move that paved the way for successive governments to finance their bidget deficits through ‘money-printing’, and external borrowing, without ever focusing on real economic growth. A dynamic set in motion that is possibly at the root of the current economic banckruptcy.

Should not have the Aragalaya 2022 carried placards saying the “225” Parliamentarians to go home and requested a Parliamentary election to be held in order to get uncorrupted educated men and women elected as the new Parliamentarians[ law makers]?
They wanted Gota go Home which he did at the EXPENSE of tax payers money enjoying the perks of Ex-President!!!

“Will The Old Order Accept AKD Victory?”
It all depends on whose orders the SL defence personnels are obeying before/during/after the Elections. In Pakistan it is Army that decides according to the wishes of Uncle Sam.
Until the votes are counted on 21/9 & 22/9 and results are released, one can not predict the Winner.
    Let us wait and see

    Do old order accepting AKD?
AKD is a person from village background
His parents may be common village folks
However people who can understand their principle and curse of 72 years can now understand and accept AKD with warm hands.
So he will be the winner of next presidential election.
But there is a good fraction of middle class who find it difficult to respect educated relatively young politician trying to make some good for the country over old corrupted folks like Mahinda and Ranil of old ruling class.
People are deceitful toward their own clan than to whom they believe superior.
    Weakness of human beings

Geopolitics only in consideration, SP is the top contender with
    1.India merge
    2. US friendly
    3. Lankan Federalism (huge lump-sum).
    4. Land-Bridge.
Money making will be slow and arduous.
For the Lankan Masses in (Sinhalese in general), this will be a no show for SP.

Ranil aims to be top contender with all of the aforesaid Sajith deals
    1.US-India merge,
    2. Lankan Federalism (huge lump-sum)
    3. Land-Bridge
+ the Lanka-India billionaire liaison, with a tentative eye on Russian-China billionaires if the first billionaire lot does not work. Namal might work with him to increase the rural masses vote by spreading a bit of the Rajapaksa wealth to a few more key mudalalis). Working Masses will have to bear the yoke for several generations.

AKD is the top contender for the Masses and with the US content only. Money-wise, System change via political and financial changing of hands will work wonders. US, in relief, will waive all of our debts. What a simple, easy, elegant, and intelligent way to give prosperity to the Motherland.

My concern is whether the old guard JVP will accept the promised NPP ‘changes’ that may conflict with their own ideology. AKD may have been a teenager in the 90s when the JVP began their violent & destructive wave for the second time but he must be inspired by them to lead the party that still venerates its murderous leader & communist (sorry, socialist) ‘hammer & sickle’ ideology.

As a person, I have respect for AKD but either he is confused in his ideology & principles or is just the pretty face that fronts the old JVP. If he wants to distance himself from the violent JVP of the past, he should step down from JVP leadership. Leadership of both points to conflict of interest. As the leader of the NPP, will he oppose his old JVP mates if they disagree on principle? Why not dump the JVP deadwood & the rest of the bagage if the JVP has ‘reformed’? Can they all really be in sync as we are expected to believe? I have doubts.

This “Old Order” represented by the “Present Order” – Ranil W, destined to be ousted at the next Presidential election, if not prepared to accept the “Change” will be FORCED out by the next uprising. So far, we have seen how he has turned his back on several Supreme Court rulings and carried on regardless. Yesterday one more ruling was given against him by the SC. In all these cases (Human rights violations) filed against Ranil W for violating Section 126 of the Constitution, I consider this to be a very serious matter that the international community must consider.

In addition to all these Court rulings, one of his nominees, who held the position of Higher Commissioner to Australia and presently serving as the Permanent Representative in UNCHR in Geneva has been found guilty of HR violations and has been fined AUS $ 543,000.00 by an Australian Federal Court.

Unfortunately, the “World Bodies” and the International Communities do not accept but have chosen to close their eyes to these types of “Political Tyranny” and allow our country to go down the drain.

No. Not anymore. This will be stopped. It is a matter of only 4 weeks. We will effect that CHANGE democratically and peacefully.
