World Rugby To Investigate Educator & Trainer Sanath Martis Assaulting Rugby KId

World Rugby appointed Rugby Educator & Trainer and current coach of St. Peter’s College Sanath Martis has finally been captured on video assaulting a school boy in full public view at the Havelocks Sports Club rugby grounds.

This incident took place when St.Peter’s College played a friendly rugby game with D.S. Senanayake College recently.

The video when viewed sees Peterite utility player known affectionately as “Kadiya” to his team mates being called off the pitch and assaulted by coach Sanath Martis.

However since it was a friendly rugby game the Peterite rugby team were not playing in their official school rugby jerseys.

Despite having a reputation of being a strict disciplinarian who coached many champion school and club sides, it was always alleged that Sanath Martis had over the years physically assaulted many of his students.

All those previous assaults remained as mere allegations, as no victim in the past officially reported those incidents, which eventually were swept under the carpet.

Now this video footage finally lays to rest many allegations that were made against Sanath Martis all these years.

According to a commentator who took to social media in support of Peterite Coach Sanath Martis’ assault stated ” the coach was livid when the said player had kicked an opponent when he was fallen on the ground during an ensuing infringement during the game. He had called the player off the pitch and then slapped him several times on the side line in full public view”

When Colombo Telegraph contacted Ross Mitchell the Consultant General Manager of Asia Rugby the Asian arm that comes under World Rugby, he said I have not seen the video footage as yet.

However Mitchell went on to say “based on what I am hearing this behavior is totally unacceptable. After we see the video footage we will definitely contact the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union to investigate this matter.”

This incident which has now gone viral in social media circles has also had prominent sport personalities joining in with their comments.

Taking to Twitter Sri Lanka’s former national cricket captain Mahela Jayawardena wrote “This is wrong! It’s not coaching its abuse”. (By Janaka Ranaweera

As an old boy of a college which is named by the “concerned parent” all I could say is no team tried to assault Martis. Instead the them Rugby Chairman nearly got assaulted by the team for making home made low quality biriyani and supplying them to the team with a bogus bill.

His financial misdeaneners cost him the top position he held in the Old Boys’ Association and still under suspension.

Sanath Martis is a perverted sadist. He has been indulging his sadism under the cover of being a rugby coach. He is performing a criminal act on camera. He should be prosecuted. Clear and simple.

Martis appears to be highly deprived individual. Even a four legged cow will not let him practice his skewed perverted sexual desires. This fat ass needs medical and psychological treatment. He is also know to make undue advances and is always refused by the players. Thus his frustration which is also equally shared by the rector of the school another catholic priest – member of a group that sexually assaults boys.

I was waiting and waiting. What action did the Sports Minister take in this regard?
The problem with all Sports Ministers in Sri Lanka is, they think that they are the Minister of Crab, sorry, Minister of Cricket, and, therefore, be in blissful oblivion of all other sports.

Why should anyone in authority should be punished or action is being taken against them?

Not only you, they (CID, FCID, BS CID) are also awaiting until someone turns up with evidence.
You all have to wait forever. Amen!

        Dear Native Vedda,
        .
I think that I rightly value well nigh all your comments, but I must deplore the fact that you appear to start your reading of any Champa comment with a view to disagreeing with it. No, not just to disagree with reason, but to be actually nasty. Predictable, knee jerk reactions are what we associate with kids who read Enid Blyton and such like authors. You are much more intelligent than that. This is not your attitude to others.
        .
I disagree with Champa’s stands most of the time. It may even be that I consider her a bit of a racist. However, I do consider her honest, and she often gives voice to fears that many really harbour. It is good to have such views clearly expressed.
        .
Also, during the 51 days or whatever of the Maithripala coup, she spoke clearly against it. And I don’t think that she spouts the most extreme “Mahavansaism”, and doesn’t use unparliamentary language, until you provoke her into using such.
        .
So, please, can we have more intelligent discussion?

Incidentially, the person who uses the pseudonym “concerned parent” never played rugby for his College.

He is the man who is responsible for this video going viral, just before the Kandy Vs Havelocks, which was a grudge battle and the 2019 League Title decider.

Though he thinks he is a “Lion” even a dog won’t stoop to so low levels to bring mental agony and cause damage to the reputation of the images of others.

He is already banned from entering the premises of two leading rugby plaing clubs.

The membership of the Old Boys Association too has banned him for 5 years, from holding any position for financial irregularities he has committed.

      Ananda Waragoda

What is your point if you have one.
Are you saying exposing persons responsible for brutal attacks on young men/women on the playing field is wrong?

If that is what you meant, I suggest Ananda Waragoda you should have yourself admitted to Angoda.

These are results of old boys involvement in sports and making the coaches win at any cost. Education ministry must turn back schools to be like school and be run by teachers and principles. Parents and old boys need to be taken out.

    It’s just a sport.

These type of abuse happens more often in SL. Educating and bringing policies and procedures may ensure to eliminate this in the long term. However its if the employer holds staff accountable and take action on them.

In this case I can see more people will stand by the coach the poor boy who was humiliated will have his chances in the sport ruined. The videographer better hide. I do hope I am wrong.

Being a rugby player, parent and a jnr. Rugby coach myself I 200% agree with you. I have worked as a senior rugby team co-ordinator in a reputed school where corrupted sports administrator s and masters in charge are protected and supported by a bunch of old boys. These OBs who are running the show employ coaches whom they can influence to get their children into the team not on merit but on favouritism. Even the Principals of this school turns a blind eye to this misdeeds. These OBs encourage the coach to consume liquor in their company at the school’s sports club after practices. This drunken coaches go on to cut the throats of the jnr. coaches whom I have seen done a fantastic job. Also there are a few parents who build a good rapport with the coach with the intention of getting their children a place in the team. Hence the Principal must take the responsibility of keeping OBs & parents in their proper place and he should have the full control of all the spots in school.

We can go on talking about SM , but what about the school St Peters and the Father Rector who has stooped down to this low level to say ok to this vicious attack on this schoolboy by his coach Sanath Martis.
Its a shame on St Peters, the ministry of sports should investigate this incident and The Rector moved before before he brings on more disgrace and further damage.
Of course the coach should be sacked after this disgraceful behaviour

Interesting comments from all concerned. Clearly a number can’t see the point here. The fact that their is raw footage of a coach assaulting a schoolboy suggests a crime has been committed . If the boy is under 18, it’s child abuse. Assault/child abuse is a chargeable offence under the criminal code. Martis should be arrested and charged by the police. It’s not the Ministers job to investigate. What is there to investigate given the clear footage of the offender committing a crime. In line with that, the principal Rector should ask him to show cause as to why his employ should not be terminated. Meets both the balance of probabilities and beyond reasonable doubt test. It’s easier than making biryani or is it buriyani? Bottom is that this monster has brought the game into disrepute.

    Dear S.L. Walah,
    .
That is gross over-reaction. Also there is a very real need for you to refine your language.
    .
I actually see little difference in character and outlook between this Sanath Martis guy and you.

@ Cranky Franky; Totally agree with what you have sed, now the other matter the food item you have referred to is called Biryani woldover, but in Sri Lanka we call it buriyani the reason, got from well informed foodie friends is that we have coined this name after the onetime famous biryani restaurant in Maradana close to the or almost in the same premises as the Tower Hall, it still runs and the food is good as a takeaway… dining in can get messy. jst a slight diversion from the main topic which should get everyone’s attention.
