Worldwide Initiative Starts To Name The Dead From Sri Lanka’s War

In advance of the tenth anniversary of the end of the war in Sri Lanka in 2009, two international NGO’s are appealing for help to collect the names of the conflict dead to estimate the final death toll. The International Truth and Justice Project (ITJP) and the Human Rights Data Analysis Group (HRDAG) urge groups inside and outside Sri Lanka to share existing casualty lists and go out and record new ones.

“We at least owe the dead the courtesy of collecting their names,” said ITJP Executive Director, Yasmin Sooka, “the scale of human loss is important to quantify and the final list of names which we will collate can also inform the memorialisation process which is key for communities”.

A decade after the war ended, nobody knows to the nearest ten thousand how many people died in Sri Lanka in 2009, let alone in the deacdes before. The aim of this initiative is to use a statistical approach to estimate the probability of a final death toll. The same approach was recently used by them to estimate the number of surrendees who disappeared at the very end of the war in 2009.

“We urge Tamils all round the world in the next few months to speak to their families, their friends, and their neighbours to collect the names of the dead. We have suggested a format to collect the information.” said Patrick Ball of HRDAG. “Several groups inside and outside the country have already started collecting lists. Recording the names of the dead is a way of collating the available information. And we can use statistical models to estimate how many people are likely missing from the data collected. Don’t worry about duplication! We will take care of the lists.”

Though the initial focus is on collecting information from the Tamil diaspora, the project is also keen to collate information regarding war related deaths among Sinhalese and Muslims.

Particularly important is to collate all existing lists so if you know of one please contact us.

Information can be sent to HRDAG or the ITJP at:

itjpsl@gmail.com or info@hrdag.org

Please note the source or sender of the information will be kept will be kept confidential. (ITJP Press release)

Why NOW? Why don’t these INGOs hold protests to ask the US govt. to arrest US citizen Gotabaya Rajapaksa and try him for war crimes in Sri Lanka, in Los Angeles where he is a property owner and tax payer?
After all, ACCOUNTABILITY for war crimes and financial crimes is most important for NON-RECURRENCE.
This INGO project is like the innocent NGO ladies protesting for dogs rights at temple trees and feeling good about animal rights to pass a bill meant to weaponize religious conflict in Sri Lanka. DIVIDE< DISTRACT and push foreign interests is the project in these so called civil society projects at this time. These I/NGO projects are suspect. Why NOW? When there are much larger Corruption and lack of ECONOMIC RIGHTS and JUSTICE issues to address?
It is part of the POLITICS OF DISTRACTION and FAKE News. Another Divide and Rule project to Distract Sri Lankans from the current crisis in Sri Lanka – the crashing economy and epidemic of Political Corruption and attempts to weaponize religious identity politics, which is promoted to keep Washington-backed Bondscam Ranil Wickramasinghe in power in Lanka.
Bondscam Ranil should be impeached for the Bondscam at the Central bank, lost investor confidence , No foreign investment the debt trap and crashing rupee.
This is done with as part of the US great game against China in the Indian Ocean. Bondscam Ranil who has protected Mahinda Jarapassa and US citizen Gota is all part of the great Trumpland game – Heads I win, tails you lose!

INGOs are doing a great job on exposing war crimes, political corruption, accountability and Justice!

It was under investigation that UK MPs are corrupted by the Rajapaksa regime by providing paid vacations and UK will have to investigate all former and current MPs visit including Tony Blair’s family.

US investigation of Sri Lanka High Commissioner, Rajapaksa’s cousin will provide more information and Rajapaksa’s money laundering activities and war crimes will be exposed.

Tamils will continue to struggle until perpetrators are brought to accountability, Justice is delivered and Eelam is separated. These Sinhala Buddhist crimes are worse than what Japan had committed during the WWII.

Do you know how many Sinhalese war criminals disguised as “victims” and exported by alleged war criminals Mahinda Rajapaksa government leaders?

That’s why Tamils are demanding for an all out international independent investigation of war crimes since 1950s and Tamils started fleeing from that period onward.

        @ Chompa

        Writing in ganja mood?
The question is about 200,000 Tamils who are under the control of Sinhala cardboard army after 2009 May fake..artificial..borrowed .victory with the help of 134 countries.

Coward after your cooley work in London why don’t you search for the LTTE s disguised as victims? Why don’t you give a petition to UN about this?

When the LTTE was at peak you coward ran away to London and asked asylum and now vomiting here.

BTW British called Werapuran Appu a terrorist you call him here he he he.
It is you ..your father…your grandfather all pushed Tamils to take up arms.
Remember what your family members did to Tamils in the west from 1956 to 1983?

Chimpa, jackass this is not about what you think. This is about naming the innocent souls which were taken away by brutes you support. I am sure you are neither a woman nor conceive children, that’s why you don’t have feelings a real woman will have. Some of the LTTE terrorists are alive and work for your hero…………Rajapaksa!!! Two of them murdered 600 surrendered policemen. Can you come back here and provide a decent argument why your hero employed these LTTE thugs in his team? Answer you f’in bit&h!

Let us not forget the thousands of others (including Sinhalese) ( and ‘soldiers’) who went away to escape the horror of war-stricken Lanka.

@Spring Koha, I do no agree with combatants going away. What does that mean? Going away in death or to another country? If death, absolutely, they should be named and their short life during this dreadful war must be celebrated. Also not only the Tamils, but also 85,000 Sinhala youths were murdered by the state. They have to be named to bring closure to their families. Human life has no brand or creed. It is a life lost!!!!!!

We as Sri Lankans we should not only name these poor Tamils who died, we also should post the pictures of all Sinhala youths who were slaughtered in the past JVP uprising. Very sad for the parents of all these children whose lives were snatched away by these brutal bastards who were governing this nation. Sinhalese or Tamils, does not matter!…………..these were sons and daughters of some poor soul in every corner of this country.

      Dear, TFTN,
      .
Thanks for your effort to see things in a wider perspective. I knew that their would be some coming from both communities who would stress the universal human aspect of mourning for those who died in these unfortunate conflicts.
      .
By commenting as you have, you have succeeded, at least in part, in depoliticising what were human tragedies.
      .
I agree that there has to be a thorough investigation, although it would be unrealistic to expect punishment. Our efforts should be to ensure that sad happenings of this sort are not repeated; but how can that be, unless the happenings are reported.

I can give you tens of thousands photos of civilians who were killed by LTTE bombs.
Your racist heart breaks seeing a LIVING boy.
How about innocent Sinhalese civilians lived in border villages who were cut into pieces by LTTE terrorists? How about a bomb exploded in a bus with full of school children in Kebithigollewa? How do you feel to see legs, limbs and heads strewn everywhere after a train or bus was blasted by an LTTE bomb?

        3

Dumb ass Chimpa, I have never supported the LTTE ever in my life. The entire organization was a creation of your consecutive governments and their pogroms against anyone who opposed them including the poor Sinhala youths. I have a racist heart? Show me one comment of mine that supports the LTTE or any other militant groups and I will concede defeat. But you on the other hand, see everything as Sinhalese and Tamils. Merely because the LTTE were all Tamils, does not mean every Tamil is a member of the LTTE or supporter of the LTTE. The Sri Lankan army and other forces committed so many atrocities against the Tamils and the rural Sinhala youths for so many years…………does that mean all Sinhalese are bad? I know you are a vile racist scumbag loser, does not mean all Sinhalese are like you. Majority of the Sinhalese are very lovely people and certainly you do not fall anywhere close to the majority of the Sinhalese. You are disgusting and a filthy loser. Your parents must have thrown you in the gutter, that’s why you turned out to be such a gutter dweller and have the heart of a gutter dweller. Do I hold you responsible for the crimes committed by the forces? But I hold you responsible for your ardent support of these maniacs and your racist views. Is this enough or you need more loser? You will get a nasty thrashing every time you behave like a racist.

So only Sinhalese death is a matter of concern. He He He
Why don’t you organize an exhibition after your coolie work in London if you have the backbone about Sinhala casualties and see how many people will believe?
No one can match the massacre of Tamils from 1956 to 1983 by you..your father. grandfather later by Sinhala cardboard army

Ever heard about a petrol bomb thrown inside the busload of Tamil passengers in Trincomalee then set fire and dancing Sinhala modayas outside cut the Tamils who tried to escape into pieces? While this happens Sinhala forces & police looked other side.
This happened not once but many times.
Only after Tamils wanted to give the modayas same medicine this was stopped.
Coward when Tamils were at their peak you hid and bed now barking from London.

Where is the urge to create the list for the other races/religions ?

” You can’t say ‘Sri Lanka’s war” and gather statistics for single race, surely it should include all parties. “

You stand well right on you your comment.

The bad thing is, even after 10 years of end of the war, Lankawe yet to have something called “government”, but unfortunately it is only having murderous, bigot Appe Aanduwas. Lions, hyenas, foxes, donkeys, dragons…. are only on the chairs, no human being. So, you could not have that get done so far, which almost all countries did immediately after their wars. That is well understandable.

But still I have a question for you. You still have your highly celebrated Dutugamunu with $18B in his foreign bank accounts. Can’t you ask him to give only $1B to all the Rapist Army soldiers, who murdered the innocents, to give out the names for payment? That will be very easy and can be done within a week. Those will be highly accurate number, not an estimate also.

You know Karu Jayasuriya, the partner in the recent coup, is bringing Old King back to official politics on Jan, 8th , the date Lasantha was murdered and Old King was defeated and sent to home by people. Karu Jayasuriya was also part of that notorious Chitanta Government. That is why he beaten any horoscope reader in selecting auspicious day to do thing.

      Jake,

In theory, yes, but in practice, the Sinalese and Muslims haven’t agitated for such a proper count and documentation, because it was in the final war in the Vanni that the casualties and facts are still unknown, and the GoSL, dominated by the majority Sinhalese, hasn’t shown any interest in impartially arriving at the truth. Hence the NGOs’ involvement and focus on the issue is very much needed .

An essential part of this investigation should be a request to Canada, UK, Switzerland, Australia and other Western countries to produce a list of Sri Lankan immigrants during war years. Otherwise Sinhalese may claim that those names are hiding in those countries thus rendering the whole exercise useless. These countries may also be requested to produce names of those visited Sri Lanka on vacation subsequent to claiming refugee status on the basis of torture. The grand scheme of how Tamils fooled the entire Western bloc for gaining citizenship is a relevant part of the story which no doubt will come to light eventually.
      I welcome this initiative.

At the same time the Government of Sri Lanka should provide the names of all those who were killed by the LTTE, both on the battle field and through suicide bombings and attacks on civilians.

    • 3
      2

      Steve,

Hopefully Appe Aanduwa can start on this process by responding to your request. That could eventually open the way to independent investigation, at least to confirm Appe Aanduwa’s list. Tamil have been long calling Appe Aanduwa to go to ICC and file an action for its investigations on LTTE’s murders. Government know it won’t go anywhere when LTTE may have to answer less than 1000 in its entire 30 years history, but it has to answer for 150,000 in the last five months alone, out of its 70 years history. If you can, please try to meet one of the responsible authorities in Lankawe and convince them to reply to ITJP and HRDAG. Tamils will be grateful to you.

Rapist Army, even after many times ordered by Lankawe Sinhala Jury only courts, refused to provide a list of surrenders it took in internment camps after war. Paranagama ordered CID to investigate missing family members to suppress their claim of missing members. Chemani, Navali and Mannar mass murder sites not undertaken by any IC organization. So Rapist army has said those LTTE burial grounds.

Government can produce the list and the families can witness on those, too. Kathirgamar, Fernandopulle, Sriskandarajah… time for families to come out like Sandhya. Pararajasingham, Raviraj like cases LTTE can give to ITJP.

When Lankawe put forward the Zero Casualty claim, it said it has rescued 270,000. But for UN to distribute emergency supply, government gave 70,000. So some or how LTTE had made 200,000 more than within that one year’s window. Mannar Archbishop estimated 150,000 were missing by using the earlier Local Government numbers of who lived there,( 430,000) and the number 270,000 government claimed rescued. Now there are 90,000 windows. If 90,000 men died by bombing a family picture by one man, wife and two children, 360,000 died- minimum.
Let the Rapist Army to come out with the numbers and explain the Gilmart it is showing in those to ITJP and HRDAG do reconciliation.

There was no war at all in Sri Lanka against LTTE as it as a fight against eradicating Terrorism whatever its manifestation.

During that fight all dead were LTTE TERRORISTS and members of heroic armed forces of Sri Lanka.

If any civilians dead, it has happened by the shooting of LTTE Terrorists when the people held as human shield by LTTE Terrorists tried to cross over to Army held areas.

This list must include all races and that’s why Tamils are demanding for an International independent investigation of war crimes, abductions and genocide since 1950s.

LTTE was a product of Sinhala Buddhist state oppression, war crimes, torture, attack, rape and murder. Most Sinhala media were involved in malicious propaganda and covering up genocidal activities.

For NGOs who thrive on $$$s from Western countries, the dead Demala people in Sri Lanka is like what we call ‘Hingannege Thuwalaya’ (Begger’s wound} that never heals. They can get $$$s only the wound exist. So they have to keep on scratching it from time to time to ensure that wound will not get healed. These NGOs bother about the dead than the living.
Sinhalayo have come to terms with the tragedy and moving forward with their lives. May be Demala people do not have brain to think that it is better to focus on living rather than dead.

A significant step towards determining the death toll in the genocidal war and before – The ITJP is to be applauded for this initiative. Although it shouldn’t be forgotten the human cost was and is colossal and can never be quantified. More than numbers to find out the names of those who were intentionally wiped out during the 2009 war, when the systematic genocide perpetrated against the Tamils by successive Sri Lankan governments intensified, is an absolute necessity – Thank you ITJP.

The above action is useless without the following CONSIDERATION
-I give the name of all the FP/TULF for misleading our children to death in this way – when tamils were systematically killed since 1970 using our children to have the Tamil people intimidated/terrorised to get the mandate in 1977 ……open doors to death in this way….putting them in harms way is a crime against humanity??
    – I ask the UN to investigate who armed and trained our ‘children’ and our Nation to be compensated immediately………foreign state sponsored terrorism.
    – why did the UN leave the war zone in the final days…….
    – all the countries worked together for the final phase for the war to be brought to trail????? our Nation to be compensated including all the Soldiers family?????
The last people on earth we want to point the finger at is the GOSL. How do we get this so wrong???????? Or was this meant this way that people die in mass numbers then the country could be screwed over by the same TNA politics and other Racist politics forever?????? this is the historical fact ever since 1977 victory by the TULF???
The point is war crime investigation need to be comprehensive without any bias and all the killing in our Nation should be accounted for since 1970 – Tamil vs Tamil, Sinhala vs Sinhala and all other combinations and should include the death of the security services too.
Otherwise this will not form part of ‘Peace and Reconciliation’ for the Nation.
I say the above just incase the UN really want to deliver justice to all Sri Lankans including the unfortunate by ‘design’ trapped for 20-30 years public and the armed children???????

Sri Lanka is bleeding today due Buddhist Chauvinism, involvement of Buddhist Monks in Politics, Sinhala Buddhist politicians who are not real leaders but they utter rhetoric, hatred, chauvinism, fear mongering in order to capture power due to their greediness and for the purpose of Good Governance. Many Sri Lanka media too collaborated to the chauvinism and state terrorism and the world knows the truth through WikiLeaks, political corruption to cover up oppression, war crimes and so on. This dubious and criminal mindset only helped to destroy harmony and prosperity of the nation.

Tamils who fled since 1950s are prospered in every field, academically, professionally in US, Canada, EU, UK, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa and Mauritius. Sri Lanka’s state terror against Eelam Tamils has made Tamil Diaspora closer than ever before. Singapore has several Tamils are Ministers and regarded as leaders of modern world while Sri Lanka continue to have constitutional crisis, state oppression, potential war crimes and genocidal investigation closer than ever as Tamil Diaspora will not let these war criminals go unpunished.

How long Sri Lanka Sinhala politicians and certain media can involve in malicious propaganda against Tamils’ freedom struggle and foolish ordinary Sinhalese and others failed to understand that part of Sri Lanka is pawned to China?

Ranil and Srisena are failed leaders and he cannot deliver Good Governance. Great Sinhala Journalists are attacked, tortured and murdered during Rajapakse regime but these alleged war criminals are free in the paradise Island Sri Lanka.

Tamils who fled Sri Lanka are enjoying freedom, democracy, Rule of law, Human rights in their new home countries that they could not enjoy in their native country. Western colonialism that merged Eelam with brutal Sinhala Land is responsible for Tamils’ sufferings as it should have separated prior to independence.

War is destructive, no doubt in that

Terrorism is the worst war in the world because the enemy is always among the civilians so hold only terrorists responsible for the dead.

If the UN is in favor of this extremist, hatred based promotion of dead people; it must take actions to list the names of all the people who died after the inception of the UN even though the number would be millions..

Unless the UN will become a discriminative unit itself.
