By Christine Perera and Visakha Tillekeratne –
Citizens of Sri Lanka, especially those who worked for a change without expecting any returns nor positions such as posts of Permanent Secretaries or even Coordinating Secretaries or to be Heads of Authorities or to get a lucrative business deal and so on, are wondering now, about the definition of Yahapalanaya – good governance. Of course the manifesto did not exactly state the words “Yahapalanaya”. It said Maithri Palanayak, Sthavara Ratak. But all these words were supposed to be equal to Yahapalanayak.
Of course we see that Maithripala is in the driving seat doing a Maithripala Sirisena Palanaya, but citizens are not sure about Sthavara Ratak nor a real Maithri Palanayak. That is a Palanaya with loving kindness.
Why are citizens not assured about a Sthavara Ratak? The same bad eggs are going half a circle and sitting on this side, in very influential positions. These eggs or rather airheads only have had a little exertion, dancing the polka. The polka being to stay at home, give in their letters of resignation, get someone influential to write to the new loving President, then get their resignations withdrawn, then they trot back doing the waltz this time to the same position, to make yet another mess or to be non starters. This dance supposedly has gone on with the Authority that protects the little ones. In the same direction is a very handsome Minister of Lessons. Citizens wonder why this handsome boy has been allotted a post as important as that of “Lessons”. Who is he? What does he do? What has he done to get this make or break portfolio so important to future generations?
Another reason why citizens are not confident about Sthavara Ratak is the fact that the bad deeds that happened with the Henchaiyas of the previous regime, seem to be happening again. Take sand mining for example. Bribes are taken again to allow sand mining. Only the colour of the politics of the bribe taker has changed. In some areas supporters of the largest party in the Podu Wedikawa are wreaking vengeance on those seated on the opposite pila this time. Does this augur well for a Sthavara Ratak?
Should citizens only be satisfied that the Maithri Motocade stopped at a pedestrian crossing in the high land? And it had ONLY six vehicles?
11 days of the 100 days have passed and most of all, right thinking citizens are worried at the lack of access to relate these wrongdoings to those whom they supported. Those whom they supported are seated on big chairs, behind big tables and the eyes of these BIG ones do not now see beyond the big table as they are all very BUSY.

That was a fake image. The vehicles were on the wrong side of the road and the number plates were not Lankan, either.

Meanwhile, President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed the Police Chief to appoint a special team to investigate the assault at Agalawatta on Sunday morning and to take legal action against the miscreants. (Bimal Shyaman Jayasinghe

You raise the question whether there is a “Yahapalanyak Thiyenwada”: I have no idea about you living there, but when we look at the development ascending towards that from the 9th – 19th – I see tangible changes just alone basing on the news on the local TV senders and the web site information through online editions of the daily and weekly papers. But we understand that srilankens in generla are emotional – they would have been happier – if MS started raiding MR, NR, Gota and the other highly corrupted men like Jonhsten, SB, Rohitha et al within the first 4 days itself. I do undeerstand the worries of people, but nobody can achieve things to that speed – nor on the west or america. But be patient, there will be a greater change as it smoothly goes it forward. I hear and see things revealing more today than day before yesterday. JVPers and all others men and women that seem to no the least patience have to let that go thorugh their heads again before creating new problems. Besides, there are 5.7mions in the country that have voted for MR and upfa adminstiration. Current adminsitration have to do things in a manner not harming those folks too. Police will be more empowered by the mid of next month so that they can react not waiting further. Jaya niyathai.. IT IS LIKE THAT ALL SRILANKENS WON A LOTTO – this is the greatest chance for them prove their competences.

I agree with Sam wholeheartedly. We the citizens should be patient. Rome was not built in a day. The new President already has his hands full and it is unfair to criticize him so early in the day. Its not easy to find politicians and government servants who are 100 percent ‘clean’ to be appointed as Ministers, Secretaries of Ministries, Heads of departments etc. He has to make the best of what is available and that is not easy. This is the time when he needs the support and cooperation of all of us to make his 100 day programme a reality. Until then let us be patient.
/
Bandara / January 20, 2015
Dear Zoe,
wisdom is not leanear to the education one collected. That should come with the time and exp. This is why we need to experienced leaders, heads, people to do what is being planned. JVPers are efficient by their thoughts- but as we are aware sometimes we have to see things in the line of lanken conventional ways – before being attacked to the ones specially won the hearts and minds of significant fraction of country#s citizens. Meaning even if MS won the election – 57lacks of people felt his rival still deserves to move on with his 3rd term. All these not respecting what JVP, JHU, UNP men and women made it very clear the levels of highly magnititue of allegations undoubtedly fall on MR and his men- that means we can also interprete it as almost half of the nation dont care even of they have been looted to the core – they should be either irreparably misinformed/misguided or born stupid folks. I beleive- the current regime shold better focus on those UPFA die hard supporters rather than anythign else – this can only be done through health awarness programms on a reguar manner. It should be one of the priorities of the current regime. People shold be made clear, if we have to achieve high income levels, law and order of the society shold be the foundation while each of them should respect it equally.

You complainants seem to have forgotten the years and years of corruption and despair this nation was going through. You mention 11 days have gone from the 100 days. Only two weeks now and you people expect miracles to happen within this short space of time. To undo the collossol damage done it would take time. They have started well. Can you see that one by one everything is being unfolded and more and more corruptions are being exposed. The JVP and some of the others are doing very well indeed. The first thing that the HE MS and the PM should have done was appoint a very strong Bribery Commissioner and members. The petitionors are coming out with facts and figures and original data. There is a system that these complaints have to go through. Court orders are being issued one by one. If the immunity of the ex President is taken away there wont be enough people or space in the depts concerned to accept complaints and deal with them!!! Be paitient cos everything have to be sorted out before the general election and then most of these perpertors will be chased away when the people of this country give their verdict. By the way what’s wrong with mentioning his name Mr Akila Viraj is given this job for only 3 months!!!!

Dan Fernando / January 20, 2015
Buddies, everytime back in the country I feel that many there only complain – just ignoring their part actually. It should come from each of us – how many of the nation are easily maniulative have been clear to anyone with a head size to the needed head. But if even average thinkers would get things easily done for them, they would not care about YAHAPALAYANA or anything. See, those who work in buros how many among them are into clean lives- if one colleague would leave the office bit earlier, the other would shut up his mouth – letting him do so since lankens in general feel – it is manussakama – ane pow.. he or she has got that and this problems these days. In china or on the west, no worker would easy leave the working place in that way – meaning entire system should be changed in srilanka if the naation wanne to achieve high income levels. In Germany and developing world – work is work – laws are strickly handled against anyone regardless of being you are close boss, belong to the employers family or the like – we can see greater change in our society if only all expect any exceptions are made clear by an equal rule of law and order system – that gones are the days we thought neglecting today s values, but we have to live today – being alert to the system. Then only enhanced productivity will lead us to high income levels.

This is what I feel too. I agree with you fully.
This is becoming more efficient with nearing end of 3 months. I heard Dy Minister Sujeeva Senasinghe begging before the people that he would not behave corrupted – using all strenghs he owns he will do everything to improve the situation hin his areas. So does Minister of Housing – Hon. SP forgetting all the diffrences they had within th eparty…and Dr Harsha Silva addressed it promising he would bring everything to improve his ministry – all these are an inspiration as if a new life is dawn – but those who only want to find the hair in the soup have been on their mode being impatient – attacking nothing like raiding similar to the style of Mahinda Rajapakshe regime took place sofar – sending a message to the nation that tangible changes are seen to this day. All the investigations should be carried out BEING IN MAITHREE PALANAYA…. putting THE DOT to so called MAHINDA CHINTHANAYA… so reglious dignaries should play their role by making it clear to the natino that everyting will turn its way better for the people of the country- we as nation sould be patient and keep the faith on them.

/
Sama / January 20, 2015
If all those men and women that according to people are highly corrupted were raided within first few days – the very same people would accuse the new regime of being inhuman, barbaric or political revenge makers or the like – our people are world champions in complaining….. not doing the least they can thinking that each of them are an unit of them. Only police, state will not succeed anything if each of us would not react actively.

I feel there is a change. For this as little as 11 days of new government I see that HOPE is created among people who suffered for different reasons. Privately owned media operates freely without fear while state media is not misused. I can see that ordinary people come out and talk about past as well as present governments without any fear and that was not the case before. I also see that Police department started working independently.
Another example, me as a member of a minority community would not have to be worried about my family when BBS decides to hold a rally in my town.
I feel the foundation is being built well in keeping with 100 day promises so far, and it is unfair decide while it is too early and especially while you live away from SL (if it is so)
/
Leelawathie / January 20, 2015
By the first of next month, with salary increase as promised for each of the public sector servants- this change will be a reality to many of them. The wave of the change will then influence on the masses – to the manner Tsunami wave damaged the beautiful island nation – awaking them that alert is a must.
Each of them would be happier – with money seeing on their hands – each as every household – nothign else would be that important to them than bit more funds facing the life hard today above everything… many believe kala beela epaya hema dema koranda… meaning above all we need to eat something before going to do anything- as heard on the news yesterday, Dr. Senaratne promised of giving the salary increments as promised on the manifesto. Al these should be commendable rather than attacking them. For them the elected the job is not at all easy- since almost anyone and everyone is made abusive by the system held until 8th. Not many uttered a single word about the abuses, even if they could not bear it – but today, every corners of the country people have guts to come forward and raise their own worries that loud as never before in the recent times…. foregtting all fears generated in this shocking when thinking about being taken way by a white van if would go against… as Wanathamulla Sunil – a fish monger or so – declared to the nation few months ago being espcaped ( winning the chance to escape in that way) from white van abduction – being a hero to their close community – all today s achievements people should rather commend – creating new energies to the men that took the risk to dawn a new era. I have no doubt – the way the wind blows will utter justice prevailed society, first and then a wonderful future.

Peter Sakiyov / January 20, 2015
Poor CT moderators. Are you hackneyed to skim over “kala beela epaya hema dema koranda…” sentence encroached into your puerile English boasting Colombo Telegraph comments. Why this double standards when somebody else writes in Sinhala or Tamil words within parenthesis you destroy the beauty of an argument with your notion of Policy Standards. (By the way how do you treat French & Latin in between English words? Does it sound much Elite of Languages to you.

Applogies Peter, CT team,
I will STICKLY hold on to CT comment guidlines from next comment on.

Peter@,
you COULD be the among the few to complain on that. I have not see any dboule standards there – EVEN if I added some in German of course with translations – CT did not disagree to that.

Visakha is a very sensible person and I am now wondering what ails her? Jagath Fernando and others commenting have listed a heap of achievements done within 14 days.Visakha should look at the calendar tabled by the Maitri government and see how the program is not behind.Dates for each item are given and so far followed.
What else?
Regarding other matters,to deal with the outgoing corrupt leaders a procedure has to be followed. One cannot arrest people lawlessly as MR did.
I hope Visakha gets her perspectives right.
/
Kusuma Bathalakotuwa / January 20, 2015
How could she be very sensible if she adds thoughts to similar that of living on a rural corner – that claim nothing much is for them yet – this kind of among the educated in the country should think twice before publishing this kind of rubbish actually. Just because I subjectively feel about anything, how could I generalize it and pass it to the nation ?
/
maali karunaratne / January 20, 2015
Much has happened within the last 10 days but much could have happened. Why did Ranil cover MR on the election night. He could have merely said that MR left because he lost if he fears people’s uprising if he says the truth about the coup. He need not praise him.
Again – why doesn’t MS reveal the deal they had with MS before the SLFP meeting where MR ” handed over the leadership WILLINGLY” . We need transparency
/
Kusuma Bathalakotuwa / January 20, 2015
Today, on his visit to Kandy Dalada maligawa – people gathered there still paid him much respect – so not to underestimate those 5.7mio voters scattered all over the country would not easily get it that the man would ever coup to stay in power. For them what is important is the picture painted on Rajaakshes over the years – as supporting them to stay further blind folded. I have no doubt, if investigations would reveal all the bits about the gravity of abuses and harm deliberated practised by the man and his thievary – it would take time people to realize it. In other words, almost half of the voters are still on his sides. More of them are violators rather than knowlwedgble ones.

Who says there in no good governess(yahapalanaya). Take for eg. Mr. Presidents promised not to appoint non-career diplomats to foreign service. So he appoint Dr. Nonis as ambassador(career? ).He appoints as finance minister a person who has a case pending involving foreign exchange.(from a LTTE backer, a person found guilty of investment fraud.) Where are the helicoptors, luxsary cars, horses owned by the former President and his family.Gotabaya deposited the money of the defense ministry in the a ministry account and was earning interest for the ministry. Now the funds are shifted to the trasuary and the state is not earning any interests. The list can go on &on. So we now have good governance.
/
Roshan / January 21, 2015
All seem to have missed that majority of the work being done by the unp n the rest in the 100 days is to destabilize SLFP for the upcoming general election. Most of the top cases they pulled up have so far failed or stuck for evidence. We have to closely monitor both sides of the 100 days to conclude on the “yahapalanaya” promise.
/
Swin / January 21, 2015
People still live him as a true leader. Sri Lankans who lived in fear of terrorism enjoyed peace and development including those who are against MR. Kusuma you will see daylight soon. You have forgotten that Chandrika was named Queen of deceit. and Ranil traitor. Think of them and you can give credit to MR.
Wish him well. This is an opinion respect it. If MR has done wrong and proved then we will believe. Until proven he is innocent.
