Your Excellency, I Want You To Be The Same Old Mahinda

By V. Anandasangaree

V. Anandasangaree

His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa,  President of Sri Lanka,

Your Excellency,

Why this crisis in Beautiful Sri Lanka

After very serious consideration I decided to write this letter to you, although I am fully conscious of the fact that this won’t be palatable to you. I am neither an oracle nor a fore teller but one much  devoted to my country and its people irrespective of their ethnicity or religious beliefs. I have no greed for power too. Had I been dishonest enough to say that the LTTE was the Sole Representatives of the Tamil People, I would have been at the helm of Tamil Politics today. I did not say so because they were not so. This stand that I took, a part from costing me my seat in Parliament at two successive terms totaling a period of 12 years also  deprived me of my income as a Lawyer and Notary Public and earned me the honorary title of “Traitor”  which title every politician is honored with by his opponents. In spite of all these my only worry today is that of the welfare of my country and of its people.

Off and on I had been advising you on various political matters based on the immense experience  I gained during a period of about sixty years in Politics. Winning the war against the LTTE was a joint effort of many, and not that of an individual or a group of persons. The contributions came in different forms from different sources. The sacrifices made by the soldiers, the conscripted youths, the people of the country particularly of the North and the East and the act of banning of the LTTE in almost all countries including India, EU, UK, Scandinavian countries, USA, Canada etc, all together contributed for the defeat of the LTTE. In most countries the ban is still in force. Added to this, many countries gave various forms of aid to defeat the LTTE. No democratic country will ever extend its support for a group, committed to violence. Hence the credit for winning the war can never be claimed by one individual or a group of individuals. The unfortunate situation prevailing now in the country is that many people who waited for over 30 years to enjoy freedom are still not enjoying freedom and the worst is, in most parts of the North and the East the dominance and subjugation are much more  severe then what it was under the LTTE rule. The biggest mistake made by you or by those who are close to you is to give you the full credit for the eradication of the LTTE rule, in spite of the fact that very many thousand civilians high officials, many Parliamentarians and Ministers, among the civilians many innocent women and children, religious dignitaries  the soldiers and the conscripted youths etc all have made great sacrifices.

I regret to bring to your notice that your failure to take serious note of my suggestions and advices given to you off and on had contributed to bring the country to this tragic state.

During the last lap of the war with the LTTE between the 1st and the 19th of May 2009 I wrote a number of letters to you. The one captioned “Save the remaining IDPs in Vanni dated 2nd May 2009, virtually foretold  all what were going to happen at the end. Lankasri News reported, “In a fervent appeal to save the Internally Displaced Persons trapped in Vanni, V.Anandasangaree, President of Tamil United Liberation Front has suggested that an International Agency, acceptable  to the Government, be selected to visit Vanni.”

I quot the following four paragraphs from that letter to you

“I have very reliable information that the number still stranded in Vanni is over one hundred and fifty thousand but I am positively sure that the number exceeds one hundred thousand. On an earlier occasion too, I hope you will remember, as regards the number I proved correct. It is very un-fortunate that although aerial bombing had stopped shelling and artillery attacks had been taking place during the last three day also. I plead with you to have them stopped forthwith and save the civilians.”

“ I wish to point out that the military action that is going on, apart from causing several causalities among the IDPs in Vanni, the fear and tension this is causing to those IDPs who have already come into the Welfare Centers, will have serious repercussions on them since most of their relatives are still in Vanni. Every life is valuable and it is your bounden duty to save the innocent people at any cost. As I mentioned earlier in one of my letters to you, when the truth comes to light one day, the country as a whole will get condemned by the International Community.

In relation to shortage of food I had written:-

“There is also an acute shortage of food and the people are virtually on the verge of starvation. On the 2nd April they had received 1100 metric tons of food items. Since then on the 28th and 29th 30 metric tons was received each day. Sugar received on these two consignments is only 1000 Kg each. Hence please direct the authorities concerned to dispatch sufficient stock of food items and drugs immediately to Vanni.

In conclusion I wrote:-

“Even at this late hour I have a suggestion to make which if acceptable, your Excellency may consider for implementation. I suggest that an International Agency, acceptable to the Government, be selected to visit Vanni and persuade the LTTE to allow the innocent people to go out freely, with an offer of a general amnesty to those who surrender with arms. A period of two weeks may be give to the agency to make the necessary arrangements. If such an arrangement is not made to bring out the civilians safely, the whole thing will end up in a national disaster detrimental to the good name of the country”

Your Excellency, if you go through some of my letters you will agree with me that your advisers had let you down. If they had acted responsibly the present situation could have been avoided. In my observation the biggest mistake the Government made was ignoring India’s  advice and taking   seriously the views of some who misled you by making very irresponsible statements. How nasty it looks to see certain degrading words used in condemning some officials  of the UN. Surely these people know that these officials act strictly on the reports given to them which they have to take as authoritative  Let us first stop condemning  officials at random . Let these people about whom I refer, understand that foreign countries have their Diplomatic missions for a genuine   purpose. Specially  at a time when the LTTE  still remain banned in their respective countries whatever information they collect locally will be genuine and truthful and not at all fabricated. If adverse reports are reaching the UN official it is our people who should open  their mouths  with utmost caution. When the fault is with our people why should we find fault with foreign countries, when they decide to support the US resolutions.

We should not forget that each country that has its mission in Sri Lanka has its own source to gather information needed, which obviously will be shared among themselves. Please take note that every wrong thing happening in the country will in their estimation be felt as violations of rights. Such matters will promptly be transmitted to the proper person. Thus those who act foolishly will have to act with caution. No country will tolerate  planting a statue of one faith replacing one of another faith, that too by soldiers with a gun in one hand or driving out the local people and trying to replace them with people belonging to another ethnic group from far off places are matters that will be spurned by any reasonable person. This country is big enough to accommodates  ten times or even more than the population now available in this country.

The North is burning and the people are still mourning the deaths of their dear ones and about the missing persons. When they are still weeping over their losses due to the war, the lose of their peaceful life, of their starving children, of their roofless homes, and broken families, the soldiers  are playing the fiddle. This is not the time to propagate Buddhism. On the whole I dare say that it is ridiculous to change the demographic pattern in the pre dominantly Tamil areas when the country is not normal and thoroughly  destabilized. May I tell you your Excellency  that you should impress on the people that fanaticism  will not pay.

I am not a stranger,  not to know about you. We knew each other for over 43 years. I want you to be the same old Mahinda and do what is just. If in your option “Mahinda Chinthana” is a just and honest concept, implement it in the best and most honorable way that will be appreciated by every body. Tell the country that you are President for everybody  and that you are duty bound to hold the scales evenly and will not be swayed by sentiments.

Thanking you

V. Anandasangaree

While I agree with the opinions expressed here it should be said that Rajapassa is no “excellency” and should never be addressed thus. There is NOTHING excellent about him, in fact he is a criminal and politicians should stop calling each other by such grandiose titles which is a mockery of Truth and justice!

When I joined my organization in the Western world and addressed the Executive President in the organization as Madam……the very first thing she told me was to call her in future not even by her Name…..but by her Pet name.
This is how they work in West.

Even President Obama is addressed as Pres. Obama……and no Excellancies to the front.

This is why Madam Chandrika Bandaranaike said now a days people are made to worship the President…..and he expects it.

Never in our history we see people are made to worship and scott near a sitting President like today and then published in media. I wonder who is serving whom…..and who is living on whose tax money.

This has to be stopped immediately as these are signs of taking the country to a dictatorship.

Giving unnecessary respect to a clown make him go crazy and Mad and play havoc in society is visible.

Kattusage kare male demma vagai…. It is like putting a gold chain around iguana’s neck.

This is not about the writer or his party, but simply a plea on behalf of the people. Most of which who had no links to the ltte, but were happily living in the north and got caught up in the brutality of battle, lost their lives, souls, limbs. With no empathy for them, how can progress be made. With no understanding for what they have been through, how can we call ourselves Sri Lankans when we cannot even be bothered to step into the shoes of our brothers & sisters…

Annadasangaree is also like Dr Rajiva who writes to the Prez in the hope that his advice will be heeded. Unfortunately he has not identified the core issue which is ones usefullness to the regime. To have a clout with MR

    1. You have to have a sizable following.
    2. You have to dance to his tune.

Only then will you be rewarded with a portfolio. Even then you cannot give such unsolicited advise running counter to his intentions. Countless letters and reports have been consigned to the WPB because they did not conform. Take a page from Thonda, Karuna, Hakeem and KP if you want to enjoy life.

Even LLRC is being kept alive by the US and UN otherwise it would have met the same fate. The only conclusion you may make is that although you associated with him for 40 years you never knew the real Mahinda. Now take a good look.

To have any impact with MR one should bring him votes, by hook or more usually by crook. All others are second class citizens. That’s why people like kudu duminda, mervyn the vermyn, and the murdering minor local politicians in the south, south west, and sabaragamua, uva, vayamba and elsewhere in the country are being treated by MR as viceroys, dukes, princes and as citizens that are above the law of the land.

If MR has any brains left, he would pay attention to Anandasangaree when he speaks.

Advice is coming from a man with integrity, who cannot be bought with money or cabinet portfolios.

If MR pays attention he can still rescue at least a part of his utterly damaged legacy.

    Dear Mr.Anandasangaree,

Why do you keep sucking up to the president? You think writing letters to him is going to work? Never. As long as the RajaPak Sirs are in power, only international arm twisting, sanctions and direct intervention will get Tamils their rights. Nothing else. So stop acting like an Uncle Tom and start to agitate for the rights of the Tamils in international forums. It’s only the world at large that will help you.
The predicament the Tamils are facing in SL is similar to what black South Africans faced during apartheid. It’s only when the world at large took heed and sanctions were bought against the country did the government of F.W.de Klerk finally give in.

      You are dead right!
This superannuated fool who, for a time, reaped the benefits of being close to the Jarapassas was spat out like the proverbial karapincha leaf and is now making these useless plaintive appeals.
Isn’t it time that he, Rajiva Wijesinha, Dayan Jayatilleke and that lot that are getting ready to leave the sinking ship shut their mouths and stop insulting the intelligence of those who read CT?

Dear Mr Rajapakse, I am a Tamil. I was born in Jaffna and and I grew up in Jaffna. Yet I am one of the many Tamils who believed that the tragic loss of limbs and life in the final Vanni war was the inevitable consequence of war. Whether this amounts to a ‘crime against humanity’ or not will be determined, not by the head count but by the motives that lay behind such a war. The actions of you and those around you NOW will determine what the real motives were and therefore whether what happened in the Vanni amounts to a crime or not. Please do the right thing in defining what Sri Lanka will be – the homeland of all its habitants, Sinhalese, tamils, Muslims, Burghers and all others. The ‘Jathika Chintanaya’ which seems to dominate all aspects of your Government is sure to lead you down the path of destruction. As you know very well pride comes before destruction. Mr. Pirabakaran’s life story was a good example and yours must not become the next example.

Honorable Sir, Having followed politics and the disaster it has brought this Country,I am fully aware the brave and independent stance taken by you against the LTTE and the wayward TNA politics. I feel that you have done your utmost and gone the extra mile risking your life and profession to bring peace and stability to this Country over the long years which have lapsed.
I wish to ask you to spend the rest of your life seeking God’s blessing to establish peace and stability in this Country, maybe it will shower upon the people.
I leave you with a quote from the great Mahatma Gandhi….A man is but a product of his thoughts. what he thinks, he becomes.

Mr. Anandasangaree, how many letters have you sent to your good friend President Mahinda Rajapaksa so far about the grievances of the Tamil people? About fifty? Have you a received a positive response to any of them? You are just trying to get some publicity. I don’t think the Tamils believe that you are genuinely concerned about their present plight. You are just another bootlicker of Rajapaksas!

Bravo, Mr Anandasangaree; every right thinking citizen of Sri Lanka should salute you for this plea to the President, despite the comments of some above who think it is a lost cause. I too believe in the inherent goodness of people and really hope that the President will reflect seriously on its contents and take a strong stance against putting a stop to future unhelpful events of the sort that have been recently orchestrated, for whatever motive. Surely the President is not that stupid to believe that wrong things can continue to be done to the people of the country (whatever their ethnic background) purely for the purpose of staying on in power? Mr Rajapakse has the power to change things and I would add my voice to the appeal above for him to rise to the occasion and make Lanka shine again.

Some people don’t need to fake a life to become President, because they are born Presidential. Others have to con their way to become that and sadly it shows with Mahinda, with the ultimate con being the pay off to Praba to prevent Northern Tamils from voting.

So Mr Anandasangaree, you obviously new a fake with ambitions, and not the true person until he attained his life goal. Once President, his true colours begin to show and we know now it has all been a fraud. You cannot teach an old dog new tricks, we just need a new dog.

So it is up to the electors of Sri Lanka to be very careful who they entrust their future to. This goes Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim communities. I am personally against religion or ethnicity based political parties. All they do is divide NOT unite.

So bear in mind who has the best interests of the Country at heart and give him or her that vote. You have been fooled for long enough to have learned from your mistakes.

Elector, If you are unable to choose now, then you may as well seal your fate, as you do not deserve better!

In the end we get the leaders we deserve not who we want!

The blunder MR made was the address he made to the public after the defeat of the LTTE which had terribly hurt the feelings of the Tamils which he failed to realize that they are also a segment of the Sri Lankan population. He was adapting a policy of divide and rule in order to secure his power and accumulating wealth in an unlawful manner which became clear with the passage of time. Having been in the politicial life for a very long period he should have proved himself a matured politician when addressing a Nation.
Had he addressed the nation – ‘This is the crucial hour to console our Tamil brothers and sisters to accommodate within our fold as Sri Lankans. This is not the hour to isolate the Tamils, Muslims, Malays and Burghers. This is the hour of building trust, building confidence, building relationships, building consensus, building teams and a bright future for the entire nation irrespective without any discrimination whatsoever. It is easier to demolish the entire hopes of a community or the structural system of the country with one single stroke of a pen or a button. But it is difficult to build a structure with one stroke of the pen or button, but building a nation is the work of a team consisting of all communities, when a country was ravaged by civil war, knowing that a country which was ravaged by war for period of 30 years cannot be built overnight.’
Had he made such a statement, MR would be considered as a Statesman even by the International community. It is a sordid state of affair to observe that MR failed to realize the dangers of allowing greater freedom to the military to enjoy at the expense of the suffering community which eventually saw the erosion of the democratic practices, all of which indicates that he is not a far-sighted thinking person. This eventually ended in suppressing the independence of the Judiciary resulting in a lawless State. He failed to control the evil forces (who were around him) which were instrumental for poor governance. There is suspicion whether this evil forces were creating or raising such unwanted issues like the Halal issue, Sinhala Buddhism, etc (all of which had the force of creating divisions within communities) to divert the attention of the public. One ponders whether BBS was an artificial creation of MR goons to create religious animosities within the communities. On the whole, it was cheap politics, giving unwanted prominence to undesirable (or uncultured) characters like Wimal Weerawansa, Mervyn Silva, Dillon Perera, etc, that had ruined the country. To my knowledge even the ordinary Sinhalese were law-abiding citizens who always like to accommodate the other communities. Likewise the Tamils and Muslims also associated freely within the communities. Recent event shows that even some Police personnel were targeted. One ponders whether MR and his evil forces along with politicians from other communities have resorted to such low level of raising unwanted issues to conceal the bankruptcy of the country or he should have been influenced by Gaddaffi’s rule of dictatorship. I am of the view that BBS will eventually teach MR & Co a good lesson. After all, history repeats itself.

Mr A, where were you during the 30 years when the LTTE was indiscriminately killing Sinhala people by using suicide bombers and truck bombs and hacking villagers to death? throwing out the Muslims from Jaffna which you claim is your homeland? dragging innocent Tamil children from their homes and turning them into terrorists and cannon fodder? Where were you Mr. A and your Tamil political cronies? You were hiding in luxurious houses in Colombo guarded by the so called Sinhala army as you were afraid of your own terrorists, you were telling the foreign governments about government atrocities but ignoring what the LTTE did. For thirty bloody years you and your Tamil politicians did this while the country burned. All you had to do was stand up against the LTTE but imnstead all you Tamil politicians chose to bootlick Prabakaran. Now that he is no more you have suddenly got a voice, but bootlickers being bootlickers, you are now bootlicking the President. Well good luck Mr. A. You have insulted the common Tamil who was deprived because you and your friends wanted a war. They will continue to be deprived as long as you and your friends dig for gold among the dead. Good luck. If politicians have messed up this country, then you too are responsible and you have no reason to talk about anything let alone rights and justice.

For a stubborn uneducated, uncultured moron a thousnd sensible appeals will not change his stance because his only motive is to dominate the Sri lankan populace be it Tamil, Sinhala or Muslim. The easiest weapon he uses for subjugating the populace is the Religion of the major ethnic group, because with day in and dayout media outpourings and the temples have contributed Religion to become the opium of the massess.

    Dear Anandasangaree,

Had you read this appeal out to a rock in a jungle at least a passing bird, a squirrel or a serpent would have paused and paid heed even though they did not understand it, but not these uneducated, uncultured, bastards who have to be sent to Hague for crimes against humanity and marauding charges! What will realize your just and fair demands and aspirations is the concerted fight back together with the oppressed millions in all nationalities also invoking the international support! UN, the human rights upholding West, India, the dissents in Sri Lanka and the streets are the battle fields to mount the attack against the rogue regime! The weapons are the crimes, slaughters, massacres, corruptions and plundering the regime has been committing and not any kind of decent and innocent appeals of sorts because criminals are alien to such humane civilities.

I think Anandasangaree became a bootlicker of MR for his own safety. It is the so called Tamil leaders like Anandasangaree who lent credibility to the unust accusation made by some Sinhala politicians that the TNA is an LTTE proxy. The stark fact is it is the TNA that suffered most at the hands of the LTTE. In fact, the LTTE exterminated the top TNA leadership starting with Amirthalingam. The TNA leaders never subscribed to violence. They have been faithfully carrying out their struggle to win the rights of the Tamil people against odds unlike Anandasangaree. The The TNA are the real representatives of the Tamil people. There will be no solution to the national problem if the government and the Sinhala people fail to recognize this fact. I invite CT readers to read T. Sabaratnam’s book `The murder of a moderate’.

“TNA leadership starting with Amirthalingam. The TNA leaders never subscribed to violence. “
You are joking!!! Why was the LTTE speaking and showing movies how the LTTE kille the SL soldiers in their Election Propaganda meetings then! Have you forgotten that? TNA was alwyas an LTTE wing. Now with the LTTE remnants are trying to get the Elam they could not get using arms.
Anandasangaree on the other hand opposed LTTE and hoped falsely that MR will bring the solution to the problem.

I once wrote that Mr. Anandasangaree deserved a leading political responsibility in Sri Lanka. Even as the Prime Minister or a leading Minister. That was immediately after the end of the war. In the current mix up of corrupt ministers, I do not think he fits in and have doubts that he will take up a job. He is one of the clean statesmen that are left in Sri lankan politics. All others a lost causes. I am sorry Mr.Anandasangaree, even though I too wish the same, your wish is never going to happen. The old Mahinda is long gone. Money and greed of power had changed that. The network of relatives and co-horts and croonies will also profit from this and will never revert!

It is time that MR take all advise and do some thing better for all communities and for the country. He has the opportunity, resources and power.
It is not too late still to make right all the wrong things happening under his administration and by his close team.

Otherwise he will go down in history as another leader who made mess of this small beautiful country and laid the path to distraction.

    Mr Sangaree

Indians must stop following the Westerners, and stop dividing the Tamils and Sinhalese. India’s divide and conquer strategy won’t work forever. When it comes to fooling others nobody can beat the Westerners, they even surprise the devil. The Indians are with the Westerners, because the Indians have a very short memory. The Indians are ignoring what the Westerners have done to the Indian Subcontinent since 14th century. India’s ignorance will lead the Indians to a disaster. The Indians are placing the whole Asia in danger. Let Sri Lanka find its own way, this will happen through true revolution. Educating and informing the leaders is the only effective revolution; not taking arms or joining with the Foreigners. The foreigners always have their own agenda, and their solution will lead to a disaster. Educating and informing Sinhalese leaders is easier than Tamil leaders, because Tamil leaders are under the grip of the Indians and the Westreners. “The Tamils are fooled by anyone and everyone”. I don’t have that much hope for the Tamils, because the Tamils are enemies for themselves, they wouldn’t mind to eliminate or undermine their own intellectuals, in order to make the Indians and the Westerners happy. From my experience as a Tamil, the Sri Lankan Tamils are most dangerous and disgraceful race in the world.

The intention to perform a criminal act is often an element featured in a criminal matter. Therefore, India must be questioned first by the United Nations for creating and equipping the Tamil Armed Groups. Clearly, India’s intension was to increase hatred and killing in Sri Lanka. Who is going rebuke India for creating the Tamil Armed Groups? Who is going to rebuke the Western Countries for funding the LTTE indirectly through the Tamil diaspora? India is liable for creating the Tamil armed groups, and the Western Countries are liable for making them as the most dangerous terrorist groups in the world. The Indians do not have a policy to move forward as China, or help other Asian countries. The Indians believe that they are going to rule Asia and the world by holding onto the Westerners’ tail. The Westerners have been ruling the world for centuries and they have lots of experience and resources. The Westerners can easily fool the Indians, if they can undermine the Chinese.

    Dear Sangaree,

I feel sorry that you an experienced willy old man have become confused , muddled and disorientated. I am lost for words when you address MR as your excellency a man who presided over the Genocide and by implication wittingly or unwittingly you devalue the meaning of the word excellency.
Except for the current corrupt Indian Leaders at Delhi who extend the hands of friendship to MR all the other Leaders of the Civilsed world have branded him as a Criminal. You are a Lawyer by profession and look in your backyard and you will see evidenece of destruction and debris of your profession under his stewardship and the callous attitude to civilised standard and behaviour. Speak to your colleagues and see whether they subscribe to your views which I doubt very much.

I am not sure what you mean by the following and I can only say that you are out of your mind.

You are right in onething yes he is the same old Mahintha the butcher of common decency and the concept as you put “Mahinda Chinthanai” to him means how to entnically cleanse Sri Lanka and that is his Agenda and Crusade and he is not going to flinch from that whether you like it or not .
He is not the president for everybody but the president for the racist element of the Sinhala race which sadly are the overwhelming majority.
So come out your closet and see him for what he is unless your song of praise is to see your name included in his next years “HONOURS LIST”
