Year 2019 will go down as a black year globally for pluralism, socialism and democratic values. Nativism and sectarianism bestride the world, the toxic right-wing scores election victory upon victory. Liberal, socialist and enlightenment ideals are pushed on the back foot. The explosion of nativism is global from Trump’s anti-migrant rhetoric, to Modi’s Bill to permit new citizenship only to non-Muslim migrants, to Aung San Suu Ki prostituting her Nobel Peace Prize to justify ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims, to Sri Lanka’s 72% majoritarian surge to Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The world it seems is headed down a diabolical path into a new Dark Age and the choice is made by the voting public. At times it seems civilisation is but a thin veneer over man’s primitive psyche. Many authors on the left draw attention to the nexus between the resurgence of toxic right-wing politics and nativism (racism, narrow nationalism, ‘Brexitism’, ‘Hindutvaism’ and the like) but none deliver an appreciation of the historical and material-economic processes behind the phenomenon. Is their Marxism superficial and anecdotal, not analytical? This is a topic for a thesis length project.
The progressive programme of the Labour Party was pulverised in the December 12 elections and Britain veered down the isolationist Brexit path. It is only a matter of time before Scotland secedes. Apocalyptic fearmongering reached a new level of Nazi like paranoia at Trump’s Pennsylvania rally on 11 November. The truth has no bearing on what he thunders forth. He cares not a shit for America, it’s all about himself and lies about Latino emigrants from Mexico and further south. “Thanks to Democrat immigration policies, innocent Americans in all 50 states are brutalized and murdered by illegal alien criminals” he bellows. He ramps up rhetoric and whips up fear that the US is being invaded by criminals who want to destroy American families. He proclaims Mexican illegals are involved in drugs, murders and pimping in hoopla lapped by many Americans. This is an abrasion that can turn into gangrene.
Globally regimes are waging an assault on the separation of powers. “Truth” is what state-power wants you to believe, it has little relation to the objective. In Lanka the Attorney General’s Dept. as been linked to the President and PM, the judiciary is cowed and brave judges are an extinct species. State Intelligence Service for the first time since its inception has been placed under an ex-military officer (Suresh Sallay) and the port authority placed under a retired army chief. According to the Daily Mirror of 14 Dec 31 State institutions have been placed under the Defence Ministry, 48 under Finance, Economic & Policy and 23 under the Buddha Sasana, Cultural & Religious Affairs. Furthermore, 17 institutions have been placed under Urban Development, Water Supply & Housing Ministry. “Accordingly, 88 institutions come under the Prime Minister”.
As I explained two weeks ago, though few took notice, authoritarianism needs to reorganise the state – both state institutions and the influential corporate sector – electricity, petroleum, banks, and ports. In an insidious process starting at the top and filtering down loyalists are being posted in a subversive redesign of institutional structures to blend into and conform to a deadly controlling of strategy. The potential longevity of a Rajapaksa-clan-regime makes this fascistic option real and frightening.
The bad old days have returned quickly and with a vengeance. Gamini Akmeemana writes in the Daily Mirror of 13 December: “In any democratic state with law-and-order machinery, the police would be tasked to protect the abductee, and to find, arrest and charge the abductors. Precisely the opposite has happened. She seems to be undergoing harassment which has become a prolonged ordeal. So far, she has had to make statements at the CID headquarters four times and restrained by the law from leaving the country. The victim has become the hunted”.
A troubling prospect about the US is that though up to now there has been no attacks on Asian immigrants if it comes to the worst, thousands of Sri Lankans domiciled in the US will be at risk. Asians have been spared because as of now there is no political mileage in it for Trump; white-racist Trump Base hatred is focussed on Latinos. Hundreds of Indian origin scientists in Silicon Valley, however, have been sent home after visa extensions were refused. Crookedness cuts two ways; while some are suppressed others find favour. Tump is to sign an executive order declaring Judaism a nationality – not just a religion. Jewish students will then have access to university admission benefits currently available to ethnic minorities.

Bill passed in India to grant citizenship on a selective basis is similar to the bill passed in Sri Lanka in 1948 to selectively deny citizenship to Tamils of recent Indian origin. If UN could say that the Indian law is discriminatory, it is indeed double standard that nothing is said about the Sri Lanka law. When citizenship act of 1948 was challenged in Privy council which is an impartial court, it held that the act contravenes section 29 of Sri Lanka constitution which prevents discriminatory laws to be passed. Instead of withdrawing the legislation, the then government got their racist Sri Lanka supreme court to decide that the law is not discriminatory and is applicable to all. Any intelligent person will know it was deliberately passed to get rid of Tamils of recent Indian origin who were in the country since 1815. Those Tamils were asked to prove that their fathers and grandfathers were born in Sri Lanka. At that time most of the people in Sri Lanka including Sinhalese in the villages were illiterate and did not have the facility to register their births. If the law was applied to all, several Sinhalese, Ceylon Tamils and Muslims would not have been able to prove their father and grandfather were born in Sri Lanka. Government took the decision to deny citizenship to those Tamils because they want to deport all of them like what Myanmar has done. If what has happened in Myanmar where less than 1000 Rohingyas were killed and less than 750,000 expelled is genocide, then it is double standard for not considering as genocide, killing of more than 150,000 Tamils and expelling more than one million of them by Sri Lanka. If UN is concerned about justice to Rohingyas including providing security for them to settle back in Myanmar, they cannot close their eyes about the plight of Tamils languishing as refugees in India.

This is true. But the saddest part is that north and east sri lankan tamils were supporting sinhala governments racist actions against indian origin tamils back then. Being an indian origin tamil myself the elders in my family disliked sri lankan tamils for this reason and used to tell me about unpleasant incidents where they were subject to abuse from jaffna tamils. Terms like ‘coolie kaaran’ ‘thota kaataan’ ‘kalli thoni’ (all slurs with a caste angle) were all used on them regularly.
These days most north and east tamils are trying to deny they used to behave like this. Back then they were a much more powerful community and flaunted their racism and arrogance very openly. Now they themselves fled to tamil nadu and other parts of the world after the sinhalese chased them out. In a sense it was their karma. So now they are trying to ‘unite’ with other tamils to get numbers on their side. I dont know if they have genuinely reformed or just being tactical for their own selfish purposes.
Narendra Modi was the first major figure i saw who travelled to the hill country in Sri Lanka and praised the indian origin tamils for their back breaking work which created Sri Lankas vital tea industry. Its almost unheard of for Sinhalese, muslims or jaffna tamils to give that kind of credit or respect to our people.

1. The privy council held that the citizenship law of Sri Lanka was NOT at all discriminatory.
2. One doesn’t have to be literate to get the birth of a child registered. The reason they couldn’t prove the Ceylon birth of father or grand-father was that they were not born here. It goes without saying that plantations were well equipped to count and register the plantation population.
3. The first tea plantations came up around 1865. That’s 50 years after 1815!
4. The requirement to prove father’s birth place for citizenship was only for those who couldn’t prove residency requirement, which was for unmarried 7 years and for married people with children 5 year residency in Ceylon.
5. The last census before indepence which was in 1946 shows that the vast majourity of plantation Tamils were born in India. Their births were afterall registered, contrary to what you claim. A good many Jaffna Tamils too were born in India (the census is available at archive dot org).
6. Non-plantation Tamils like you from Srilanka went asylum shopping in the west, looking for greener pastures. That could hardly be called getting expelled by the government.
7. Now the UN, International community and India can help resolve the ethnic problem in Sri Lanka by opening up relocation of Tamils who wish to relocate to their homeland, instead of bothering the Sinhalese.

What has caused a re-emergence of anti migrant racism in the west is the uncontrolled migration of muslims and africans into europe, america and australia. And both these communities are known for scrounging off welfare, getting quotas in education, jobs and all manner of freebies by the liberal politicians.
Obama during his time secretly took 20 billion dollars from the tax payer in the USA and gave it to blacks and muslims, many of whom were unemployed and refuse to work. Some of them have jobs and still illegally take the welfare as a second income. They were given luxury homes, brand new expensive cars and a monthly salary amounting to many thousands of dollars. A black woman from california accidentally let it slip from her mouth when she was talking to a white neighbour who was curious to know how an unemployed woman was able to live in a large multi bedroom luxury home and drive a brand new jaguar.
I myself have seen the explosion of muslims and africans in london. They have literally changed the racial demographics of that region of the UK. And they are almost all hostile towards white people.
This is also at a time when the population of homeless white people is growing. Liberals have deliberately and systematically been driving them out of society on all levels. You cant expect all of them to sit by and watch this behaviour continue. Most of them have voted for white nationalists as a result.
