Over 450 families in Trincomalee are to lose their homes as a result of the Rajapaksa regime’s continuous wooing of the Chinese to remain in their good books.

The Australian media establishment ‘Green Left Weekly’ in an article on Monday has revealed that President Rajapaksa during his recent visit to China had signed an agreement to hand over 1200 acres of land in Trincomalee to the Chinese on a long term lease for ‘defense-related development’.
The land that has been promised to be given over to the Chinese is said to be occupied by temples, mosques, schools and houses and the majority among the 450 families who are affected are said to be Tamil speaking Muslims.
Several similar land transfers have been made to China recently by the Rajapaksa regime in a bid to curry favour with the Chinese government. Some 198-acres of land in Gampaha has been promised to a Chinese company in order to settle their losses in constructing the expressway under the build-operate-transfer scheme and another large land area has been promised to the Chinese in return for constructing a dam to prevent coastal erosion along Colombo South Port to Moratuwa.

MR has little choice most of the loans taken had easy terms for the first 3-5 years and now that’s coming to an end. The revenue generated by the country is not sufficient to service the debt and run this incompetent govt. Its current choice is to go into more debt which will not go well in the market due to the current state of the country, or start liquidating assets. If not for UNP putting the break on the last sale in Col which the govt converted to a lease this would have been and outright sale.

I mean what good does it do to our country, what benefit to its people? What advantage do we gain from a ‘defence related’ development to China, of all countries. What is there so common between our two nations? A lot of questions to answer, let aside the impact on those who will get displaced. I am sure this is going to irk a few countries, who will want to put a stop to Chinese expansionism.
I guess it all boils down to money. She needs lots of it, massive amounts of it to splurge on elections and fattening ill-gotten wealth of the regime family. Probably, now its India’s turn to offer something to get an area of the opposite side on the West coast, for something like ship building yard to sort of maintain a sense of equilibrium.

Exactly, and where are the Weerawansas, Gnaanasaaras and Champikas who are/were the champions of protecting the country from foreign intrusions. Surely they should have something to shout about when it has all the signs of affecting their Sinhala Buddhist cultures.

The land in question is allegedly for a public project. The landowners will be compensated in the usual manner, taking into account the value of the land registered at the Land Registry by the owners, or their neighbours. The problem is that the registered value is far below the market value, and I am sure I do not have to explain why this is.
The best hope is to be granted another piece of similar land in a similar location, but this is unlikely to happen. The lengths people go to, to hide income and pay minimal tax has it’s disadvantages.
