A Double-Crossing Regime Arrests A Double-Crosser

Udaya Gammanpila is a politician. That’s as bad a character certificate that one can get. He is a pompous, self-righteous politician whose principal edge is the ability to justify any position (even the total opposite of the one taken a day before) with a turn of phrase, random examples taken out of context and pure and simple gumption.

He’s a man or immense ego and one so large that he himself doesn’t know when he goes overboard with it. He called himself ‘Clean and Clever’ when he contested the Western Provincial Council Election. ‘Clever’ is not necessarily a positive virtue. There are clever pickpockets, clever car thieves, clever manipulators of the share market, for example. ‘Clean’? Was he saying that he has never been guilty of wrongdoing? Well, there are all kinds of wrongdoing and not all of them are related to money.

Regardless of what one’s political preferences are, his somersaults just prior to the last General Election showed him to be nothing more nothing less than a two-bit politician. Just days after lambasting President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Government when his party (Jathika Hela Urumaya) left the ruling coalition, Gammanpila rubbished the positions he himself had previously defended and ran into Rajapaksas arms. That’s not crossing, it’s double-crossing!

Mahinda Champika Pic by Nishanka De SilvaTrue to form he defended both moves and did his best to paint virtue all over his choices. That is what politicians do, no big deal. We are not talking here about parties, coalitions, objectives and ideologies. They matter very little to politicians. He is not the first to switch loyalties. His claim to crossover-glory is the fact that he could double-cross within a few days – unlike, say, Ronnie de Mel whose life-expectancy of party loyalties usually ran into several years.

There are two questions. One is about being clean. Money-wise. That’s debatable. There’s an allegation. There’s been an investigation. One can hope that the relevant case is heard quickly and he’s given a fair trial. He’s innocent until proven guilty.

The second is about timing. Dayan Jayatilleka has posted an FB comment on the arrest:

“I just heard (at the airport) the appalling news of Udaya Gmmanpila’s arrest . Even when I have disagreed with some of his views, I have always known Udaya as a decent, educated, civilized and honorable young gentleman.

“How to explain this timing and this escalation? Is this meant to be an example of reconciliation? Is this arrest an attempt to divert attention from the Arjuna Mahendran affair, and to provoke the Joint Opposition? Is it because Udaya is a close supporter of Gotabhaya? Or is Udaya being targeted to prevent him from challenging the federalist Constitution in the Supreme Court?

As the possibility of a Referendum over the anti-unitary Constitution is on the horizon, is Udaya’s arrest only the first of a series of Oppositionists due to be locked up in the same way that an earlier UNP Government arrested Vijaya Kumaratunga on false charges, before the infamous Referendum of 1982?”

Educated, yes, but ‘decent, civilized and honourable’? I will reserve comment on those attributes. Still, Dayan may be right on the rest. And that’s serious stuff. But let’s put it down to Dayan’s current outcome preferences and therefore outcome anxieties. It’s the issue of timing that is interesting and worrisome, regardless of the reasons for what clearly appears to be a politically motivated move on the part of this so-called Yahapaalana Government.

Today, almost a year after the Yahapaalanists came to power and a year and a half, almost, since a Yahapaalanist President was elected, there are few who will call this Government squeaky clean. From the Maithripala Sirisena appointing his brother as Chairman, Telecom just days after being elected President to shady operations in the Port, this Government has turned ‘Yahapalanaya’ into a joke. We’ve seen the celebration and rewarding of nepotism, mismanagement, theft and thuggery. We’ve seen woeful foot-dragging on pledged constitutional reform. They have showered perks on themselves while taxing the poor. The Port City is not scrapped, it is back on track. And the cabinet gets bigger all the time (courtesy the 19th Amendment)!

These people were supposed to be different and supposed to do things differently. Political victimization, for example, was to be a thing of the past. About a year ago, the first time that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe met heads of media institutions, he was asked whether all financial wrongdoing would be investigated or just those that are alleged to have taken place during the previous regime. It was pointed out that selectivity cannot be healthy. Wickremesinghe said, “we have to start somewhere and anyway, it is hard enough finding the documents and other evidence from even recent years”. Dodgy, but one could go with it.

Today, with Gammanpila’s arrest over something that happened 19 years ago where he is only a suspect, in the context of clear evidence that authority has been abused by the Prime Minister’s blue-eyed Governor (and of course other pranks by fellow-travelers), we have to ask ‘are you serious, dude?’

If charity begins at home, there are people in his cabinet who should have been arrested before they were appointed. In fact in the first place they shouldn’t have been offered nominations, shouldn’t have been smuggled in through the National Lists and certainly should not have been offered portfolios.

So let’s call it as it is.

This Government doesn’t know the ‘Y’ of ‘Yahapalanaya’. This Government is nothing like it promised to be. It is not different. It is the same. It is corrupt and vindictive and it is a BIG JOKE that such a bunch of jokers are actually talking about ‘reconciliation’! Forget that!

Udaya Gammanpila can’t really cry ‘foul’ considering his recent choices as bed-fellows, but every single individual who voted for Maithripala Sirisena, the United National Good Governance Front (sic!) or any of the crooks, bandits and jokers in this Government needs to wake up and acknowledge the fact that these people are the pits. Of course this doesn’t mean they need to back the Joint Opposition or campaign for the ouster of this Government. But if it was about ‘meaningful change’ it is high time they admit, ‘we were short-changed’. If it was about not liking the Rajapaksas for whatever reason, then of course there’s no problem as long as you don’t toss around fairy stories about good and bad, clean and corrupt and so on.

Udaya Gammanpila is a double-crosser and an unabashed one at that. This government, however, has double-crossed every single individual who believed in the lies about good governance and decency. That’s far worse, isn’t it?

Mr Senerivatne, with all respect to your writing talents, but why not you as a writer explains more about the reasons behind the arrest. Just adding few lines about Udaya has been educated, clever or not or th elike, why you make every effort to misguide the readers ? No doubt this man Udaya has deliberately involved in various abusive issues/events. That we the CT readers are well aware of.

      1) for his campaigning, he collected 100 rps crying that he has no funds; but most that spent him there are left to be misguided by him today

      2) As a lawyer he perfectly knows that Rajaakshes looted high sums of the state funds tellign the fairy tales to the vulnerable folks – there Rajaakshes should be charged sending them decades long jail sessions.

      3) Behaving calling himself as clean and intelligent, but delivering the other way around is a high crime to me or anyone who live in Western countries. I am surprised the way harward educated men just ignore the kind of abusive men in the country. I only like your writing skills but your opinions are far from any clean and sane average of any society Mr Seneviratne.

      4) Besides we must not quote anything from DAYAN JAYATHILAKA since we are not crystal clear he is an another WIMAL BURUWANSE that round the clock make every effort to bring back his god father Mahinda Rajaakshe. There are enough good educated political analyst within the country to instruct you better – if i may say so, Dayan has become a laughing stock to the educated people as of now. He himself betrayed the educated communities of the country since he sat with dogs in that FAMOUS nugegoda stage.

          Sour grapes for Baiya supporters!

For sure, this Gammanpilla bugger will go inside min 5 years.

Slowly but surely things are moving on right direction and the thieves are getting the right treatment. This is the change that most of the sincere people expected to happen. This bugger should be put in to the cell with worst convicts so they know the best medicine to be given.

He thought MR would win the PE and that’s the reason why the bugger switched sides. Regrettably ended up in wrong side. He is just another thief protected and saved by his godfather MR and used him when and where required.

Joyful days are ahead when most of his compatriots would be seen in jail if the Yahapalana govt. fulfils the promise it made at the election to catch all the thieves.

MR must have kept all the loot under his front men or proxies. He is challenging because all the loot is hidden under somebody else accounts. The govt. should start with his Tamil relative’s (Nirupama Rajapakshe’s husband) foreign accounts.

I also believe the crime he commited is not the average kind.

That owner from the company is due to be here for case hearing.

I could never tolerate UG s arguments since as an academic, I felt my gosh.. what he is talking about. It is not a talent but so abusive by every means. That is how he has been brought up. He does not have the kind of good human characterictis. Why to decieve vulnerable targets that way should be punished by god… that is what we see it today. The family is left to be torn. There I have the sympathy to the family since they cant know the way the wind blows. But anyone who judged his nature could predict that the guy is no means genuine.

Yes, Gammanpila was the man who drove the on a nefarious visit and maimed a pedestrian ; Eye witness accounts were dismissed y Ranil’s Plice. Ranil’s LTTE friend Mahendran robbed the country in a scandal costing this country 90 billion rupees. same Mahendran spent 20 million rupees on personal expenses in one year.Jon destroyed thewalking track build for public use,Jayawickram Perera. killed a leopard oon a hunting trip in a wild life sanctuary, Ranil appointed his close friend and fellow chursh-goers to bribery commission, AG’s Dept, Air Lanka, FCID, CID.

          Just fairy tales.

But the very same folks that were tamed by them so long would not stay ever so.

Please take care of you guys, so long you just spread lies – calling Arjuna or th elike athat way, will boomerang on you no doubt.
Just listen to international press functioned from S pore, there you will get to know more about Arjuna. Instead of attacking him get more infmormatin about the person. Besides, naive JVPers or others that just attack only – will have no grounds in this country anymore… they should also see the practical facets. Hypothetical sums according to them, to have gone lost because o fthe collective decision being made by CB to put on the shoulder of AM is a crime.
Court has clearly made it that nothing is done by AM. But him being a tamil and well experienced person to the post, all simple simpons to attack him believing what is being added to air is correct, is really unfair. Besides, the issues is being investigated right now also by COPE, let them do the job and come to a decision. That can then draw conclusions.

I have a good advice to Malida – trusting that he has a family, how he would ever teach to his kids the good and bad about politicians ?

What examples he would focus there when talking about bad politicians ?

I am not sure, you need to be a haward educated person to get this – even locally graduated BA holders would easily see it Basil or other Rajaakshes looted the nation as no any leaders in entire south asian region ever did. Not just some fraction in the society, but entire world is attacking them. Not just china, but india and others that dealt with them are well aware of the facts- the manner how Basil the most abusive high man handled the trasactions with them. Please Malinda, when woudl you sense of all these ?

Malinda Seniviratna, glad you are recognizing these scums of UPFA. How many more are there besides the Rajapaksas?

In summary, Udaya Gammanpila is a scum, filth, dross, dirt in the Sri Lankan Partilemy, elected by Modayas, whose Average IQ is 79, and scum is fleecving both the modayas and the foreigners.

      Caveat Emptor, buyer beware.

The parliament was covered with the thick blue scum, Udaya Gammanpila.

Arresting and releasing on bail and then waiting for years raised the question “we are innocent till proven guilty” and Pal Horu become fake “Sinhala Buddhist Freedom Patriots” who are fighting to save Mathru Bhumi from the enemy. Time to expedite hearings and finish off these real “betrayers of Matrhu Bhumi” who in fact are destroying the chances of Sinhala Buddhist to earn their deserved place. If not 1/2 the population will be massacred when these double or triple crosser win power, which is not far , they way this government is behaving. That will sure be the end of the “Sinhala Buddhist”.

Law and order is still miles away from even from teh current regime.

They have been just practising arresting and release to please their voters. But inside story is Rajaakshes is allowed to honeymoon in Japan.
Actually, in Germany, at the time, investigations were called against former President – he was not allowed to go anywhere.

That is the biggest difference between law and order societies and the so called GOOD GOVERNANCE of srilanken soceity.

Though together with Most reverant Golden son of the nation – LATE Sobitha thero, I had been doing anything and everything to send Rajaakahskes home, today, I am no satisifed the way current duo goes forward with investigations

We finally need to see the sharks wearing prison costumes and spend jail sessions not ONLY just Gotabaya

      1) Mahinda Rajapakashe
      2) Basil Rajaakashe
      3) Former First lady
      4) Yoshita Rajaakshe
      5) Namal Rajakashe
      6) Udayanga Weerasomeone
      7) Jaliya Wikramasooriya
      8) Former First ladys brother – Meeharaka Wickramasinghe/NAKI manamalaya

all be spending their day in Jail by now.

Malinda is vague on why he is attacking Gammanpila I am sure there is a reason, probably personal.
The mistake Gammanpila made was that he allowed PaCha to lead him in the wrong direction but soon realized and corrected his path.
That is what Malinda is calling a double cross.
The whole charge of this theft of an Australian stinks to high heaven.
Wonder if the Australian high commission has anything to say about one of its citizens being cheated like this. After all they involved themselves in the Gunaratnams case.
The other is,can one really believe the excuse of this Australian Shaddick fellow that he did not complain all this while because Udaya was a powerful politician?Udaya was never a powerful politician and at the time of this incident I am not sure he was even in politics.Anyway if his claim was true would he not complain to the Australian HC at least?

I think Manusha Nanayakkara and Gomanpila were colleagues that work for a common aim inthe elections. But Manusha was not that ultra nationalst as Gommanpila has been. Gomanpila to attack anyone publicly he does not need to facts. But to be against their nationalistic agendas. See, how can he sit with Wimal Buuwanse, but he did. Not even street mongers of the day, would sit with Wimal, knowing the man is born idiot – but Rajakshes have promoted and allowed WW Rhetorics to outreach masses.. Remember Aiyooooooooo Siirisenayo…. can anyone attack a person who leads to Presidency, had he had a brain similar to the size of a needle head that way ? Never, WW woudl never rethink but emotionally enjoy his day attacking anyone mostly without facts…. there is no basis of his public speeches, but like in wesak jathaka kathas on the stage, people enjoy his sinhala low level terms go viral. That was targeted by senior politicians in getting their votes for their campaigns. The unique nature of attacking the opponents that way, allowed him to even closer to Rajapakshe.

Today, most decent Mr Sirisena would never allow any of his men to hold the speeches filled with sinhala terms that attack to the opponnents to the manner Wimal Weerawanse is used to . That is the greater difference, but I myself watched the video, of Wimal BUurwanse, calling ” Aiyyoooooo Sirisenayo” was presided by Mahind a Rajaakshe… can you imagine any leaders woudl allow their men to go that derogoraty as former president Mahinda allowed. Rascal culture was marketed by Rajaakshe publicly. That then allowed all kind of uncivlized men and women to use as the weapon. Not forgetting Rajaakshe also kept silent at the time BBS doggy man in red robes used his foul mouth to attack anyone publicly.. inthe end that ended up with ALuthgama riots… all these should be not forgotten by people. Sinhalayanai.. please wake up.. and see where are you… today we have more freedom for speech – but still much more to be done towards justice being restored.. those high criminals must be caught by lanken law and order.. them to be kept away from teh asosciation from average will lead this country to a prospher. basta. s

How can a squeaky clean Grama Sevaka who rode a bicycle and who claims he was so honest as Health Minister of the Rajapakse regime where he referred to Mahinda as “maharajaaneni” afford to send his goon son to ENGLAND TO GET AN EDUCATION? How the hell does Sirisena afford to send his son to LONDON?

ALSO how and why is his daughter’s advertising company suddenly making millions and grabbing state contracts? Where the hell is Colombo Telegraph?

So Dear Yahapaalana Ambattayas. ANSWER These questions.
    1. How does he send his son to London? Where did the money come from? Academic scholarships for his brilliance?
    2. What education level has his daughter completed to grab all marketing and ads for her company since Appachchi became Janaadhipathi?
    3. Why does Mahendran spend public money for million rupees suits and how many trips has he done at tax payer expense?
    4. Why does garrulous Semesinghe put his photo on government aid for flood victims to promote himself?
    5. Why does the govt impose taxes one day, change it the next day, fuck the budget up the following day in sheer incompetence?
    6. How does Ranil Sir’s cronies get plum positions everwhere just because they are from Rowyell kollage?
7.Why does a UNP minister’s company get road contracts worth 3 BILLION Rupees now under Yahapaalana?
    8. Why are there so many murders, rapes etc under Sirisena and why were the the rapes and murders during MR’s time blamed on his regime but not these?

Sunday times report says UNP minister gets road contracts. Jayaweywa

The answer to these questions is the following:

Ranil and Sirisena are two stinking thieves.

Did you hear that Ranil? Did you hear that Sirisena?

Enough of your Ariyasinhala white suits. Take those suits and drape the pigs in your backyards. They are more clean than you are. At least the Jarapaksas were not in disguise. They were openly dirty.

I must say, Malinda, that there is a marked difference in your views of late – a welcome change from the time you were ignoring the excesses, or even pandering, to the whims and fancies of the Rajapakses. Wonder what it was that woke you up, or could it be another one of your ploys to disguise your true intents?

And as for your fellow-Rajapakse defender of those bad old days, the infamous Dayan J, who claims that he has ” … always known Udaya as a decent, educated, civilized and honorable young gentleman”, what more does one expect from this Machiavellian hypocrite who clearly has a major problem of credibility and a reputation as a ‘bottom’ feeder?

Anyway, in case the presumed epiphany is not a hallucination or some ‘alternate reality’ nonsense, good luck to you in this latest incarnation.

Education, money or power is nothing when the individual does not have any standards – that is seela or values.

Udaya Gammanpila was intelligent and educated. but he did not have any standards an values.

So, he became just a con-man.

In the decent society, no one would trust him.

DECENT AND EDUCATED. WHAT DOES DECENT MEAN, A PERSON WHO CONFORMS TO THE NORMS OF CIVILIZED SOCIETY, ONE WHICH IS CULTIVATED AS A RESULT OF RECEIVING A GOOD EDUCATION.

TAKING THE REASONS FOR ARRESTING GAMMANPILA WHO IS ACCUSED OF LOOTING MILLIONS OF DOLLARS BY FORGING THE SIGNATURE OF HIS EMPLOYER, HE HAS PROVED THAT HE IS AN UNEDUCATED AND INDECENT MAN , WHO HAS NO RESPECT FOR CIVILIZED SOCIETY NORMS.

IF HE IS PROVEN TO BE GUILTY OF THIS CRIME, THEN HE IS THE BIGGEST HOOLIGAN THE PEOPLE OF THIS NATION HAVE SENT TO PARLIAMENT.

A CROOK OF THE WORST GRADE, ONE WHO NEEDS NO SYMPATHY FROM JOURNALISTS OR ANY OTHER.

TO EVEN MAKE A SUGGESTION THAT HIS ARREST IS FOR POLITICAL GAIN , IS NOT SOMETHING ONE MUST WRITE OR TALK ABOUT.

“But if it was about ‘meaningful change’ it is high time they admit, ‘we were short-changed’”

If you look at the voting population of the country, you can see that they always made the right choice, and that there was no better candidate for the highest offices in the land. Arguably, we may never know because some of them were assasinated.

But that’s democracy, the parliament of 225 represents the 10 million who voted, and that’s the way they want it. That includes Udaya “Morning” or shall I say “Good Morning” Gamanpilla.

Obviously you have better information that what I get from the newspapers and CT, because as far as I know the honorable MP “Good Morning” has not done anything other than been a very vocal critic of the government.

And by the way, how does it look to our Western Friends when critics of the government and their families are regularly summoned before a crimes department, and some are imprisoned? Does it look politically motivated? It looks politically motivated to me.

Slowly but surely, the wheel of fortune is swinging the other way; or swinging away from the Yahapalanayas at least.

This will be seen by all, except for the Yahapalana blokes. As is the norm, when in the saddle, they never see the horizon. So short of sight is their vision.

It is really amazing how the government big wigs pay tuppence’orth of notice to their miscreant ministers. Then there is a classic fellow of the cabinet who doesn’t know anything, or the question when asked does not apply to him, each time he is interviewed! I don’t know why the interviewer does not remind this bloke that he is duty bound to answer on behalf of the people.

There is so much of arrogance already on display, it will only be a matter of time before this government eclipses the misdeeds of the last, and people will yearn for the return of the MaRa types.

There is no point in reminding either the President or the Premier any more. They simply cannot bring themselves to do what is right OR, THEY HAVE COOKED UP A LOT OF LIES ABOUT THE PREVIOUS REGIME which wont stick!.

Just replace a few words like UG by MS, politician by journo then the article will be super.for example
