A Leader Like No Other, A Party Like No Other

By Narada Senanayake –

An obstinate man does not hold opinions. Opinions hold him” – Alexander Pope.

UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe

The UNP is in crisis.

The people know it. The party loyalists are tormented by it.  The party leader is not aware of it.  When Lenin wrote his famous tract- ‘what is to be done?’ he began by recognizing the problem. He wrote “Our party is in a state of formation. There is the danger of diversion from the correct path. Ranil is not Lenin. Ranil is a leader like no other leader, leading a party like no other party.

For the UNP to decide on the way forward, it must first trace the path that brought it to this point, period and phase. This essay is intended to help that process.

 Resolving the Riddle of Ranil

Why does Ranil resist reforms in the party?  Because they are not needed stupid!

Leaders lead. Followers follow. That is the effortless, painless world that Ranil Wickremesinghe the UNP leader inhabits.

He accepts no other arrangement. As most psychologists would say, man is a creature of habit. His reactions are automatic reflexes from the stimuli of his environment. Which is why Warren Buffet remarked that “Chains of habit are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to be broken”.

All his life, Ranil has lived in an environment of privilege. He has never knocked on doors. Doors have always remained open to him.

Ranil is convinced that he is the destined successor of J.R. Jayewardene. JRJ made him a cabinet minister in his first term. And that was before he turned thirty. That was destiny. A destiny that he will not share today, with others in his party.

Since then his task has been a  battle to match his destiny to the  vagaries of politics. Quite early in his political journey, he wisely concluded that he does not possess that annoying attribute – the common touch, the ability to be ordinary among ordinary people. That was essential to retain his rural base in Biyagama his first constituency, won in the 1977 landslide. Why bother changing habits or renouncing birthrights when more convenient options are available?

He deftly switched his base to metropolitan Colombo. That is what JR did when he moved from Kelaniya to Colombo South. Adequate funds and machine politics are efficient substitutes for public approval.

Ranil is not the archetypical grassroots leader. He is the quintessential string puller leader. There is no way he will oblige the UNP backbenchers in their demand to reform the party. Reform means change. The very anatomy of change is determined not by one’s surroundings but by one’s inherent mind set. When change and reform are mooted, his instinct commands him to dig deep and stay put. That is what he has done now.

The modern information age has no place for leaders such as Ranil Wickremesinghe. In this age, followers don’t follow leaders. Followers have the resources to make or break leaders.

So, if Ranil thinks that he has won the first round, he is in for not one surprise but plenty.

What is a political party?

There was a time when the political party was the intermediary between the state and society. That was the time when political parties articulated policy and were propelled by a political elite who were generally agreed on the state of the world and what was needed to be done.

That world is no more. The end of the civil war under an all -powerful executive presidency resulted in institutionalizing leader centric political parties.

That has virtually ensured a lifetime political relevancy for Mahinda Rajapakse.

He is the exception to the rule. Neither the SLFP nor the UNP can repeat, duplicate or clone the ‘Pohottuwa’ trick. That does not mean that there is no life after Pohottuwa’.

Sheep are a breed like any other breed. There is a limit to their numbers. The sheep are with Mahinda. The problem with both Ranil and Maitrhri is that they are prowling the countryside for non-existing sheep. Rest of the constituency think for themselves. They are not sheep.

There was a time when political parties were regarded by the citizenry with some degree of esteem. The relative degree of such esteem decided the ranking of political parties.   Nowadays, ranking of political parties is decided by the antipathy and or apathy towards political parties.

Under the first past the post system of elections to parliament, political parties were compelled to nurse and retain members of parliament who were competent and loyal to the party. This has changed. There is no political existence without the party. The party is no longer an ideological repository. Charismatic leaders such as Mahinda can control a party more or less in the style of a ‘boss’ controlling a ‘gang’. That Mahinda has been supremely successful in his style of politics is beyond debate.

What Ranil Wickemesinghe and Maithripala Sirisena should learn is that there can only be one Robin Hood at a time in the Sherwood Forest.

In today’s context the raison d’être’ of a political party is not its manifesto or its ideology. What matters to a political party in today’s volatile frame is its ability to persist as an organization.

Central to a party is its ability to retain a command structure that can retain its organizational strength. Now Ranil believes that Ravi is a better organizer no matter what Joseph Michael thinks.

Conversely John thinks that ‘Viagra’ can make him as masculine as ‘Navariyan Ranjan’.

Five types of followers

Harvard professor Barbara Kellerman has identified five types of followers. These five types follow good, bad and ugly leaders. They instinctively tilt towards ethical, unethical or non-ethical leaders. Leaders after all are made by followers. Some leaders dispense with followers preferring to operate with cronies. Cronies too are a type of followers as you may gather from the following categorizations.

The first category is called ‘Isolates’.  Example – Gamini Jayawickreme Perera, Ajith Mannaperuma

They are the innocuous types. They just don’t give a damn as to who leads them. For some reason they have joined the party. They do what is assigned to them and go about quietly keeping their heads below the parapet. They will follow the leader acceptable to most others.

The second category are ‘Bystanders.’  Example – Thalatha Athukorale. They watch from the sidelines. They are professionals in the business. They are observers. They don’t take sides. In leadership battles, they don’t offer active support to anyone in the contest.

The third category are the participants.  Examples – Ranjan Ramanayake, Range Bandara , Ajith Perera, Harsha de Silva, Sujeewa Senasinghe, They watch from the sidelines. They are professionals in the business. They are observers. They don’t take sides. In leadership battles, they don’t offer active support to anyone in the contest.

The fourth type are the ‘Activists.’ Example – Eran Wikremeratne. They feel committed to the party and the leader in that order. To them organization is paramount. When they support the leader they can be energetic, eager and engaged. When they don’t support the leader, they go in to hibernation. When disenchanted with the leader they prefer to sulk in a corner. They don’t join rival parties in protest. They curse the leader and wait!

Then there are the ‘Diehards.’ Example – John Amaratunge, Tilak Marapana, Daya Gamage, Malik Samarawickrama etc.

They are passionate about their leader. They are ready and willing to be dictated by the leader. These are the type that get in to the working committee of the party!

That is a most engaging account of Sri Lankan politics.
I have to take exception, though, to the reference to Robin Hood and Sherwood Forest because Robin Hood and his merry band took from the rich and gave to the poor. ALL the politicos in Sri Lanka have a track record of doing just the opposite!

Please forget politics and corruption for a minute.
I note Mrs Ranil has good taste in clothes. Look at Ranil’s shirt and tie, don’t you envy how the matching colours enhance his personality.

Aryan Sinhala suit wearing Dinesh now wants to be the leader of the opposition in the parliament. On the other hand Suit wearing Dr Gota (DSc) wants to be the next president.

SOme one says Ravi Karunanayake has bought lands all over Srilanka including the North, Mahiyangana, Bagawanthalawa, giradurukotte and many othe rplaces. HE is ready to go on. His family runs a REAL ESTARTE Company. I heard, the govts needs more lands.

please tell me where I took umbrage to that?

Not at all! Please re-read what I wrote and understand the spirit in which it was written. (sorry I cant remember where I stated this, but I know I did).

In fact I admired him for wearing what was convenient to him and not donning the ‘acceptable’ for the occasion, merely to hoodwink the populace into believing he was one of them.

He isnt; he never was, and good on him for that!

These presidential pardons are becoming a joke and a get out of jail card scot-free for criminals…

About time we look at the laws governing a presidential pardon. Is it really needed or can we come up with a better methodology for those wrongly convicted!?

Ranil is a firm believer that his destiny comes from his lineage. He sees no other position other than the fiefdom of the U N P. There is only one probable successor to him in the party royalty succession line.

This treating of the party as your fiefdom is the curse, for want of a better phrase, with our politics.

At least with Ranil, he presents himself well always, will never frighten the dogs, and his table manners are a cut above the rest. His Teflon coating ensures that failures and setbacks are but passing clouds. Everyone else in the party will always be followers.

Both MR and RW have one thing in common; they can never see themselves becoming elder statesmen and getting to be above the fray. There is no afterlife for these two.

I don’t even know what hope we can have anymore. Because of the arrogance of this cursed fool, the rajapaksa’s return is all but certain now. If RK wasn’t given the post of assistant leader again, atleast that would be something but no, Ranil insisted. Tell me fellow CT readers, is there anything we can do?

There is also another category – the ‘suicidal’ category. Thewarapperuma belongs to this. Fortunately they are few. They are called suicidal because they will try to hang themselves on ceiling fans or immolate themselves using petrol and matches at the drop of a hat. They are called suicidal for the overriding reason that Ranil might find the need to commit suicide if they continue in the party. The one mentioned is an absolute posterior orifice whose gibberish alone is reason enough to warrant the red card being shown.

I am wondering whether Ranil and Arjun Mahendran had a role in collapse of Edirisinghe Trust Investment. According to a reliable source, the Monitoring Committee on Non-Banking Financial Institutions had brought the crisis brewing in ETI to the attention of Arjun Mahendran but apparently he had not taken any action which could have prevented the crisis. Anura Kumara Disanayake asked the PM to make a statement about ETI but he has not responded. According to rumors, a local investor had made a higher offer to buy ETI but some people seems to be interested in selling it to a shady character from Malaysia. About 35,000 who invested their hard earned money in ETI are facing a desperate situation.

Ranil can be a senior leader and PM, but Sajith Premadasa should be appointed the Leader of the Party. All voting should be held through secret ballot and Ravi Karunanayake should not be given any position until he is cleared by the Bribery Commission on getting a free apartment for Bond dealers. When appointing Ministers, Ravi Karunanayake and Wijedasa Rajapakshe should not be given any ministerial posts. Older inefficient ministers should be removed and young back benchers should be given ministerial positions. Sarath Fonseka should be made the Minister of Law and Order. Only when these changes are made UNP will be able to raise its head at the next election.

for the sake of Sinhala buddhists, Present UNP is useless. Ranil does not represent the old UNP. Therefore, the PResent UNP should be destroyed. I hope the voters take the right dicision. Ranil and his gang are selling a political party and it’s idology. UNP could not establish their own govt or di dnot have a president mean, Ranil as the party leader could not sell his party. some people boast that Ranil is a four time prime minister How did that happen. HE was hanging their as a leech, He was not appointed or elected their democratically by his team. Other than that, what you have written is just gibberish and not important. If the Leader pretends that he is either dumb, most probably, wome how hangs in their until oneday things works out for him, there is something very wrong with him. He needs the shock of the life. I am prety sure heg ets it this time. He will try his very best to prove other wise. but, I don’t think srilankan voters are that dumb even though the western media, spy agencies, Evangelists, 31% of minorities and India support him.

  • 6

In brief, Ranil should be able to SELL his party, he himself and his cleeagues to the voters. So, wait and see how dumb they are and how effective the opponent parties are. I hope his past performance does not reflect the future.

  • 7

Quintessentially Ranil is a man out of his time, overstaying his welcome and unable to read the wind.

A pity really, for he would have made an outstanding President had someone gone and placed him on that throne, and he was able to resist the urgings of partisanship and the urgings of his mates.

POSTERITY will remember him as a man who had ‘greatness’ within his grasp but who let slip that opportunity through his obscession with the belief there could never be another his equal, never mind greater than him.

It is the BoD that does that filing. In any case If I were on the board, I would vote for digging in for bit longer. The CEO just effected a management change which I think got the balance just about right. After 25 years in the making, there was no chance that there would not be some rumblings. One can easily argue that the CEO is doing all these in self-interest. I say “may be not”

When Old Brother Prince last time returned from America, Colombo media speculated from his etiquettes and quintessential, classy behaviors that he might have been endorsed to run for EP. That sounded like a new campaign direction for bringing back their government. Now, in UNP side, Akila Viraj is promoted to Party General Secretary. He is an absolute brain paralyzed case. Ranil promoted him because he does only carry the Panthams to Ranil, but doesn’t bother Ranil. Akila Viraj has been announcing that Ranil will be running for EP. That is nothing in anyway different from Thero De Silva announcing of Old Brother prince’s Candidacy. Now this essay is coming too.
Ranil’s biggest asset is foxy cunning. Arrogant, but no brutal, though blamed in Batalanda murders, no is nice either. When the Mothers lost children fell on feet and cried in his visit to Jaffna, he pretended like not seeing them. He knows to keep cool in circumstances, when others would be thrown away. His is sworn dead not to have ICC accord signed or any Rapist Army brutalities investigated. His intelligence is above average; unlike Old Royals, none of them are capable of completing O/L under normal circumstances, but Ranil has a law degree. In the Central Bank case, he brought Mahendran from Singapore with a deal only for one year and got him to do the robbery while Mahendran hoping to getting it permanent. Other than the CB, not many cases of looting or theft are known of Ranil. He burned Chandrika-Neelan Constitution. But he made fake agreement with Sampanthar for Secret Solution. Then he set up the election date of LG to co-inside with UNHRC sitting, and let it without defending Secret Solution. If that damage is not there, one would say he will be the next president. Old Royal, the open racists will like Ranil, who the secret racist, because they know Modayas doesn’t grasp his secrecy.

Narada . You have well and truly hit the nail on the head. I am sure many others will endorse your description of the person who is apparently digging his own grave. I presume many right thinking people will accept your categorising formula, I for one opt to go with the third category denoted as participants. Unfortunately it is only a handful , not only within the UNP caucus but within the 40% or so of the Electorate too. so much for the political maturity of the people, but the politicians say the voters are intelligent and are well informed. Leave alone the voters , look at the standard of the elected MPP. What a pathetic spectacle it is, even after enjoying 70 years of franchise many of them do not know whether they are coming or going. My candid feeling is that if the UNP in it’s entirety act as a participatory entity there is hope for future prosperity.

Sajith Premadasa, Ramanyayake, Sujiva Senasinhge, Range Bandara, the 3 backbenchers; they all voted for Ranil (in his favour) at the No Confidence debate. These hypocripts now want him removed!!!!

The reason for this – they think by removing Ranil they become a step closer to become Leader of UNP and PM of this country. All are selfish brutes.

Akila Viraj explained – Ranil had challenged at the recent Party Room Meeting that anyone interested in the leadership post to state so publicly. No one came forward or moved. Sajith who is a joke and a sissy kept quiet like a puppy dog.

Then they come to the media and say bad things about Ranil. All of them should be thrown out of the party, as the party veterans John Amarathunga and Gamini Jayawickrama Perera remarked.

Ranil is a sheer gentleman unlike MR or Gota does not kill people to take revenge. The day he is gone the country will realise the vacuum that could never be filled.

Finally., Managala must be removed from Finance Ministry immidiately. Being a dress maker he does not have a clue about Economics. Ravi K must be bring back as Finance Minster – judged by Banker Magazine as the best finance miniter of the world.

Sarath Fonseka must be appointed as the Law and Order Minister.

Finally, Narada., Dayan J, Emil van der Pooten all seem to be in a flock – they all detest Ranil and want him removed. Being so biased and partisan they are not qualified to attack Ranil.

Ranil has no leadership qualities, no charisma, will never be able to win an election on is own steam as leader of the UNP, does not understand nor does he want to adopt democracy in the true light. The UNP members for the sake of the country should oust him ASAP or in the alternative break away with the smart young guys and form a new party like what the SLPP have done. This is the only salvation for the country and the only way to get rid of this selfish, arrogant sob. He will always be a loser and has conned the party for several years with having in his pocket the useless fossils like Viagra John and the obsolete advisers who have been delegated responsibility for running the country. Once a new party is formed these imbeciles will have a natural death and be consigned to the garbage bin of SL history who f….d up the country when a good opportunity was there to male SL great gain.

The problem of the unp is not the party leader ranil but the is a no reason for the party like unp who has done and doing mixed janasaviya type economy in the society where the mahinda rajapaksha and his modern slfp who are the architects and masters of supercapitalism in the field. but innocent unp people do not willing to accept this or tolarate this .there should want a reason that is why they say because of ranil every thing is happening it is not a truth.the entire business class and the urban middle class and middle class are die heart supporters of mahinda.see the results of places where most of the business people and upper midle class living kaduwela homagama maharagama kesbawa kribathgoda jaela mahara gampaha all these are won by mahinda by majority of 50000 votes.now in srilanka the modern slfp (slpp)the largest single party in srilankan history who holds 46% vote base in srilanka has single horse race in any election if anti mahinda votes are divided.unp only has 23% of the srilankan vote base ( local government election unp alliance got 31% from that 8% from slmc digambaram rishard baduyudeen and helaurumaya and other alliance parties.).from 1994 as party unp only had less than 25% vote base srilanka while slfp had more than 42% since 1994 but because of slfp was in allinace there seperate vote base of 42% never highlighted as a single party.mahinda add another 12% vote base of business people who are the die heart supportes of mahinda and super capitalism.unp always depends on 12% of floating voters and musilm and tamil parties.now the srilankan society is addicted and highly requesting mahindas supercaitalism and business economy not the unps mixed janasavia economic system of jr or premadasa. Because of this system there is a no need of a paty like unp for srilanka that is te real problem of unp not ranil.if sajith or any one comes they will be worse than ranil.

The sheep that MR leads are all Sinhala. Unlikely that Tamil and Muslim sheep will join his flock. That is the limitation for MR and Gota. They simply will not have enough sheep because there is as Narada points out a finite number of Sinhala sheep. So, the country will be safe from these murderers.

There was another Congrats for Dr Ranil on my FB page.
This time it is from his ex Royal mate in Singapore. The greetings are awesome. Here it is.
” Machan Ranil. I am thrilled you got the Gig back. Those Ponniahs can not shake you machan.
I put the Finances in such beautiful order you can face up to any challenge going forward.
If that Gobba Sira didn’t fuck it up. you and I could have made it the second Singapore before the next Election .
And you would have been a sure shot to get the real Gig, which you have been craving all your adult life as the UNP leader.
Just imagine the rollicking times we could have had together,
We could have polished a few Moet & Chandon at Shangrila, with Aloysious, Oneliya , Meela and Ravi boy to celebrate your latest victory.
Poor bugger. Sira reemed him big time . Didn’t he.
I am glad you still look after Ravi.
Machan don’t forget my SIL . Poor bastard .
He also should have done a disappearance, instead of getting too greedy and buying Mendis.
And helping Malik to top up the Srikotha Slush Fund.
    Hope to see you soon.

A leader of one of the two major parties who never contested for presidency, always depended on political manipulations for securing power.
If there ever was an opposition which wished the defeat of the country’s own armed forces it was the opposition led by Ranil Wickramasinghe during the war.
By taking a pro LTTE stance and ridiculing the armed forces he knew he would be branded a traitor. But that would take him off the LTTE crosshairs and he was the only man in the island who could take a peaceful sleep, not even Sampathan. He is such a cunning b******. It is the gods who saved this country from his pact with Prsbakaran. For our great fortune Tamil political class decided to go for the Vadukkodai objective in one go and the rest is history.
He has succeeded in totally separating the minorities from the majority Sinhala Buddhists for political gain through vicious propaganda that all others are antiminority.
His anti China propaganda before the elections would have landed us in a disastrous situation if not for the mature attitude of the Chinese for their own interest.

Ranil has been in odd with Sampanthar from the time he burned the Chandrika- Neelan constitution. He blocked Chandrika from signing the ICC. He went to New York to have destroyed 9UN SG EP report, (in his vocabulary, Darusman report). He took Deva, an “Old King Of Tamils”, in to his side. He used his disagreement with Sampanthar to foster friendship with LTTE, split it and destroyed. Then he took Karuna faction with him. Tamils became disgruntled with him. He was defeated in 2005 by Tamils. They abandon him in 2015 CC section, too. He took a lesson not to show anger face to face but grudgingly manipulate the enemies (as he did to TNA this time). When New King defeated Old King, he used it and came up to power. But Tamils – Sampanthar group- was suspicious of his conduct. Sumanthiran wanted to make inauguration speech of the UNP campaign. Ranil did not allow. Sumanthiran wanted a minister post to join UNP. Ranil gave only the Paperboy Ministry. But they (TNA) were forced to work with him by the West. So sat on the opposition, but decided to support him. Tamils are capitalists. Sinhala Buddhists are “Opposition Voting” Russian Communism bent. By their capitalist Tamils don’t have any way, even after DS, JR, Richard .P crushed them down to earth, to hide them from appearing to be supporting UNP. Ranil do know that. After 2015 election, though the promise was to remove army, he went North and met only the Rapist Army. He declared Keerimalai Presidential Palace to be converted a 5 star Hotel so he too can stay there. Then he went Kilinochchi had very rough denaturing meeting Tamils as slaves. He ordered a principal in that meeting to shut up and sit down.

This is similar to the events in the South, where politicians frequently force the female teachers to prostate in front of them. Ironically, that time there was Rapist Army’s orders TNA parliamentarian should not visit schools or meet teachers and students. We warned TNA’s decision to work with Ranil can make it go like LTTE. But TNA took that decision and has gone in to pieces now. UNP can’t look for support from Tamils any more. There is a possibility Tamils may boycott this election, like 2005, even if TNA work for Ranil (unlikely).
The essay’s purpose appears to be polishing & cleaning the UNP and represents it to election. There Ranil is the only viable candidate. So Author wants to gently critical and enforcing parental disciplinary advice to the careless child Ranil, to bring him back to track. Author is not a SLFP supporter and not Slap Party at all, even if Thero De Silva jumps in like does in Sara Dissanayake’s essays.
So far Old Brother Prince and Ranil got introduced in CT. Ponny said he would consider, but that could be if he is CC. Nobody has brought in New King yet.
Unlike thepopular opinion in the past three years, Old Royal candidates will like Ranil and New King stand for on their own. (Most likely too). Earlier it was thought if New King stands, he only would split SLFP-Slap Party votes. So it was thought it will be advantages to Ranil. But now it is pretty sure New King will not touch Slap Party votes, but only split Ranil’s votes in UNP. So there is chance New King stand in the EP election and force Ranil goes defeated then he will ask PM position from Old Brother Prince. Certainly, Old King would not want to hold any positions in next election.

      Mally,
Interesting insight in to your Vellala Party of Sampathar.
I thought it was all hunky dory with Sampathar and the Kid Abraham in total control.
And Sampathar was like Dr Ranil’s uncle Junius..
After reading your comments, I now have a better understanding of what happened and what is happening in the Vellala Party, during and post Pirahaparan.
JVP ADK is now 100% behind Dr Ranil’s partition Constitution hoping to get hold of at least one of the Nine.
Now it is getting harder with Lakantha having Appam at the Carlton .
I guess Sampathar has no problem with the North.
But ,Will he get the East where his seat is , if the Dalits join the Wahabi Party .
Are there any Dalits in the North.
DR Ranil has enough shit already
Now 3 of his heavy are in the outer reading him the riot act. on Public TV.
Foot note boy Ajith was straight forward asking not only Dr Ranil to piss off..
But he demands that all the Deputies do the same.
And Silver Spoon Boy young Sujeeva said the same after returning from Chicago.
He even accused Dr Ranil of protecting the crooks ( Horu) by his new reshuffle.
Pity our Sinhalese don’t have a Mally like you to expose these crooks here..

        What are you talking about?
JVP voted along with JO in support of no confidence motion against Dr Ranil’s government.
