A Religious Police For The Rajapaksas

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

“The BBS will take immediate steps to form a ‘Cane Force’ against those who act in a manner insulting to Buddhism during the Wesak season”. –Rev. Galagoda-Atte Gnanasara Thero (Lankadeepa – 17.5.2013)

Pro-democracy demonstrators protesting against the flawed Iranian Presidential Election of 2009 feared one enemy above all other – the Basij,Iran’s religious police. As the ‘Protectors’ of the values deemed valuable by Iran’s ruling Ayatollahs, Basij is generally occupied with breaking-up parties, destroying satellite dishes, lashing bloggers and attacking women considered ‘improperly attired’. But Basij is far more than a bunch of zealots with a penchant for violence and sadism; it is also an indispensable weapon in the arsenal of Iran’s rulers, a cudgel to be used against political opponents (including dissident Ayatollahs). Basij played a brutally effective role in defeating the 2009 pro-democracy movement. The next Presidential election is scheduled for June 2013 and Basij is busy cracking down on Tehran’s coffee shops, the political-oases of Iranian intellectuals/dissidents.

Mutaween – the Commission for Promotion of Virtue and Protection of Vice – is Saudi Arabia’s Basij. Its members also roam the streets searching for offenders, ranging from women ‘violating’ the dress-code and fans of Western music/films/TV shows to non-related males and females who interact with each other. In two emblematic cases, Mutaween arrested a 70 year old woman for having two unrelated men in her house (they were delivering bread; she got 70 lashes) and prevented fire fighters from rescuing female students from a burning school (15 girls died). Mutaween is also indispensable in buttressing the power of the Saudi ruling family. It cracks down on critics/dissidents; its leader recently warned that twitter users – one of the very few platforms available to the regime’s opponents in this über-despotic land – are eternally damned.

Now the Bodu Bala Sena wants to give Sri Lanka and its ruling clan their very own Sinhala-Buddhist religious police.

At a recent press conference, Ven. Galagoda-Atte Gnanasara Thero announced that the BBS plans to form a ‘Cane Force’ (Weval Balakaya) to ensure ‘proper conduct’ during the Wesak season: “The monks of Bodu Bala Sena will go from village to village carrying canes to control/punish those people who are acting indecently”[i].

It is the BBS’s intake on the Buddha’s final exhortation to monks, to travel far and wide, for the wellbeing of the masses.

Religious fanatics cause damage other religions; but their most irreparable harm is reserved for their own faith. The likes of Taliban, Saudi Wahabis and Iran’s Ayatollahs cause far more harm to the reputation of Islam with their inanely brutal conduct than all the anti-Islamic propaganda of all ages. The Inquisition and the Witch-Hunts are still bywords for violent intolerance and persecution; the midget-descendents of those Christian fanatics still oppose the teaching of evolution in schools and demand the death penalty for homosexuals. Hindu fanatics who defend such repressive practices as casteism and Jewish zealots who demand a country segregated along not just Jewish-Palestinian but also gender-lines are the worst detractors of their own faiths.

If anything would be more damaging to Buddhism than Myanmar’s rampaging monks, it will be Sri Lanka’s BBS types, on the warpath against not just the ‘religious-other’ but also against fellow Buddhists who refuse to accept ludicrously fanatical fatwas.

When Martin Wickremesinghe’s Bava Tharanaya was published in the 1970’s, a vocal-minority of monks and lay people wanted it banned (probably without reading it) as an insult to the Gautama Buddha and Buddhism. Today, the BBS would burn the book, attack the bookshops and pronounce Martin Wickremesinghe to be a traitor in the pay of foreign conspirators.

The BBS’s ruffianly conduct towards a group of Buddhist monks protesting outside its headquarters is a warning of what Lankan Buddhists – including monks – can expect in a country in thrall to fanatics. Apart from a dress-code, a code-of-conduct, an Index of Banned books/movies/plays and a socio-cultural inquisition, the BBS-types might develop their own version of Buddhism, including what monks should sermonise on and which politics are kosher.

Fanaticism is often inane.  During the annual Cultural Festival in Riyadh this April, Mutaween arrested and deported three male delegates from the United Arab Emirates for being ‘too good looking’! Take the artificial ho-ha about a storm named ‘Mahasen’; a BBS-type organisation stormed the Meteorological Department, demanded an immediate name-change and announced that the naming was a foreign conspiracy. This asinine conduct could have been dismissed as an antic of attention-seeking fanatics, expect that President Rajapaksa mentioned ‘the naming-of-the-storm-Mahasen issue’ in his Victory Day Speech, as proof of an anti-Lankan conspiracy.

That was silly; it was also indicative of the symbiotic relationship between the Rajapaksas and the Sinhala-Buddhist lunatic-fringe.

BBS: From Halal to the 13th Amendment

From warring against Muslims and policing Sinhala-Buddhists the BBS has waded into purely political-waters, by declaring war against the 13th Amendment.

The Rajapaksas excel at using cat’s paws. That is how they de-merged the North and the East, checkmated the IIGEP and impeached the Chief Justice (not a single Rajapaksa signed the impeachment motion).

The Siblings need a way out of the Northern PC poll. A postponement might compel Indiato put its weight behind Canada’s call to boycott the HambantotaCommonwealth. Delhihas already warned against denuding the 13th Amendment.

The Rajapaksas can hold a relatively free and fair election and allow the TNA to form a council (reserving the option of dissolving it later), but this option may not suit the Siblings’ maximalist-palate. An election suffused with violence and malpractices might ignite Tamilnadu and compel Delhi to sabotage the Hambantota Commonwealth.

So, why not get Sinhala-Buddhist maximalist organisations to launch a campaign against the Northern PC poll; and to file a case in the Supreme Court asking for a postponement? Then the Rajapaksas can escape retribution by telling Delhi that the Judiciary postponed the election. (Who can doubt Mohan Peiris’ willingness to give any order the Rajapaksas order him to give?)

The BBS, given its willingness to descend to levels even Wimal Weerawansa and Champika Ranawaka are a tad reluctant to – can play a ignobly pre-eminent role in such a campaign. Since it is not a UPFA member, the Rajapaksas can disclaim all responsibility; they can have their cake and eat it.

Just as economic neo-liberalism seeks to make the world more like what it was under pre-socialist capitalism in terms of relations of production, religious-fanaticism seeks a return to pre-Enlightenment (European-Christian) values/morals. Fanatics of all religions are not just viscerally opposed to the progressive, secular and libertarian currents which led to and resulted from European Enlightenment. They are also completely antagonistic to the tolerant ethos which characterised many a non-European civilisation/ruler from the Ottoman and Mogul Empires,Baghdad and Syrian Caliphates and Al Andalus to India’s Ashoka, ancient Greece,Persia and Mesopotamia.

Historically, the religion-politics nexus played a negative role, tearing countries apart, flattening everything progressive in its path, cultivating intolerance and obscurantism and dragging societies to places they never intended to go initially.

Saudi Arabiais the perfect example of what can happen to a country, even in our own time, when a ruling clan combine religion with politics to perpetuate itself in power.

Let us beware.

Does the BBS think that this sort of threat would be honouring the Buddha, during this blessed time of Vesak? Wouldn’t the Buddha in his infinite Wisdom have spoken for Maithree, Karuna, Muditha Upekkha towards those people with ‘Dust in their Eyes’?

Pope Francis Says Atheists Who Do Good Are Redeemed, Not Just Catholics
        Posted: 05/22/2013 2:25 pm EDT | Updated: 05/22/2013 4:04 pm EDT

Pope Francis rocked some religious and atheist minds today when he declared that everyone was redeemed through Jesus, including atheists.

During his homily at Wednesday Mass in Rome, Francis emphasized the importance of “doing good” as a principle that unites all humanity, and a “culture of encounter” to support peace.

Using scripture from the Gospel of Mark, Pope Francis explained how upset Jesus’ disciples were that someone outside their group was doing good, according to a report from Vatican Radio.

        Commandments 3 and 4 Above.

        See below:

Brutal Gota’s Bodhu Bala Sena commemorates Wesak by attacking true Buddhists monks.

(Lanka-e-News -23.May.2013, 8.30PM) It is just two days more to celebrate the Wesak day in commemoration of Lord Buddha who was born and enlightened on this day , and even passed away on this day in different years. That is to say , all true Buddhists consider these days close to and Wesak day as most sacred. Specially the Buddhist clergy should set an example to others by exemplary behavior via human kindness and religious practices . Unfortunately in SL , the monks of Bodhu Bala sena who represent the paramilitary group of Gotabaya Rajapakse had thought it otherwise , and behaved most inhumanly and barbarically by attacking another group of monks, as a result of which one of the victims are hospitalized.

The original Buddhist monks who fell victims to the attack of the drunkard Bodhu bala sena monks (who are enjoying the patronage of Gotabaya Rajapakse ) have in true Buddhist spirit to protect the Budhdha Sasana against the crude , disgraceful and anti Buddhist conduct of the Bodhu bala sena (BBS) organized a peaceful demonstration in front of the BBS headquarters at Thummulla junction against the BBS activities which are vilifying Lord Buddha and his preaching.

The BBS monks who arrived there had attacked the Sangha monks, wrested the placards from them and destroyed them. Consequent upon this barbaric attack , one peaceful monk has been hospitalized. The victim says , among the assailant monks , there was a murderous criminal monk, Vijitha . On an earlier occasion too , when the peaceful people lit lamps in front of the BBS headquarters in protest , the BBS thug monks had arrived and abused them in the filthiest language and launched an assault.

It is well to recall Lanka e news had in its reports on several occasions warned, while the BBS clergy thugs were attacking other minority innocents and abusing them in filth that the actual sangha members are also heading for a brutal beating .

Great reflection. Wish someone can translate and have the Sinahala speaking majority in the villages read it. It is their gullibility while large in numbers that the military industrial complex of Sri Lanka and its stitched political machine seems to clearly exploit to insane levels.

In management we are taught Vision, Mission, Objectives, Action, etc., etc., If the same principals are applied to life of a human religion / faith/ belief will definitely take 1st place as it is the foundation. So all actions will have to correspond to it, whether it is governance, politics, economics, personal rights what ever. What I am saying is that religion definitely should play a role in politics. The problem occurs when only part of religion is considered for politics and the leaders been bias towards their personal rights and benefits.

Take for example Saudi Arabia. When a Roman leader / general came to Saudi to meet the emperor he asked to show the castle of the emperor. He was told that if you go there you can find him. To his amazement the emperor ( Umar , prophets companion) was sleeping on open sand and had nothing more than a normal citizens house.
Take today, not only the Kings but all their family too live in the most advanced palaces even though Islam prohibits Kings. With regards to this principle of humbleness of the leadership Iran is probably leading….

There are two sides to every allegation.

The author’s twisted kind of journalism that makes a comparison with the House of Sauds, Iran, Rulers of Lanka; to mislead values and morality that are placed within each community. Islamophobia is very well disguised in a subconscious level.

Author’s Statements such as below without evidence. Does the author can prove the allegations of misuse of power rather than media propaganda by the enemies of Islam.

Basij is generally occupied with breaking-up parties, destroying satellite dishes, lashing bloggers and attacking women considered ‘improperly attired’.

All peace loving people will welcome if the BBS stops booze parties, destroy irresponsible hate speech media satellite dishes and filthy bloggers and attack ‘improperly attired’ men and women.

O ye who believe! If an evil-liver bring you tidings, verify it, lest ye smite some folk in ignorance and afterward repent of what ye did. (The Noble Quran 49:6)

So tell us, do you want Sri Lanka to turn into some sort of theocracy or theoCrazy like Saudi Arabia or Iran? Just remember, after the the BBS finish caning the Buddhists, they just might come after the Muslims (that’s you) the Hindus and Christians.

BBS is just another running dog for the regime, along with the likes of Weerawansa, Ranawaka et al.

Muslims, LLRC, 13A, Wesak, Bishop of Mannar (Rev. Rayappu) are all in the mix for the melodrama.

They are necessary distractions to whip up emotional sentiments across the divide, and take our minds of core issues such as cost of living, crimes and massive corruption.

By the way these running dogs have studiously avoided commenting on the tragic Matale mass graves issue, where fingers are allegedly now being pointed at previous army personnel who are now close to the regime. Have the lips of the running dogs been sealed on this subject?

The Family will meantime pursue its own agenda to consolidate power and rule in perpetuity.

Unfortunately, except for its migrant labour (which brings in USD 6 Billion per annum), SL does not have the resources either of Saudia Arabia, Iran or even the much-maligned Zimbabwe to survive a financial crisis.

Having borrowed for the next few generations, the slightest international economic jolt (sending our migrant workers back home, God forbid), would put SL in a tailspin, with nothing to fall back upon.

Besides internal agitation, I believe that the threat of international sanctions may just bring the family to its senses.

It is time that the divided opposition closed ranks and established a viable strategy to save the people of this country from continued tyranny and corruption.

Tisaranee, once again, what are your thoughts on the possible course of action the combined opposition should take to rid this beautiful nation of the curse inflicted upon it by this rapacious family?

So Ms T wants our Sinhala Buddhist inhabitants to adopt European / Christian Values and Morals.

Poor Iraqis who were force fed the EC values and Morals are dying at the rate of around 200 a month on average by car bombs.

Libyans are under half a dozen Gengis Khans who were hand picked to coach their subject on EC Vs and Ms.

Saudi Arabia has however helped millions of poor Muslims in South Asia, particularly in India and Pakistan to build homes, educate their kids and put food on the table.

And Ms T has taken offence .

Where does she talk about adopting Christian values? As Kautilya correctly states she is implying that Buddhist values should be upheld by Buddhist monks. Koheda yanne malle pol indeed. FYI Sumane, the Christian values you scorn are the very ones on which the laws of the land are found and law elsewhere as well. Please do not insult Christian values just because you want without knowing your facts. Christian values have changed humanity and formed great civilizations as Buddhist values have.

Tisranee said ‘Fanatics of all religions are not just viscerally opposed to the progressive, secular and libertarian currents which led to and resulted from European Enlightenment’. Cant you understand this? Of course you did understand but you are twisting and turning things as usually do in order to poison Sinhala Buddhists.
BBS is not protectors of Buddhism but a bunch of dogs to protect the sick Kekilel family.

The pathetic Sinhala/Buddhists are living lie, the values you believe in and practice are European / Christian Values and Morals.

There should be a limit to STUPIDITY. Unfortunately, BBS – to its true name Balu Bala Sena is acting stupid. If BBS carries canes, it may be time for the masses to carry batons to control BBS members who are acting against the civil society. Since the police is not taking any action against the violations of the Balu Bala Sena, its time for the masses to take action.

1st of all BBS should whip themselves for all their actions during past few months. Once they do that they should evaluate and prioritize the pressing points in society. If they do that they will come up with a list which will list the countries ruling lot as the 1st line to be whipped.

These vultures seems to have deviated a bit to change the negative perception about them. Make no mistake these blood suckers sole objective is communal disharmony to appease their master. The vesak thigi is a just a seasonal passing cloud. BBS plans are long term, target next presidential election.

With all these quasi-legal entities and vigilante groups enforcing informal laws (not part of the statutes nor derived from Common Law) in Sri Lanka the police department must surely feel quite impotent and unable to raise a finger against actual crimes committed in the name of god and country. Where would ordinary citizens have to look, when they are victims of crime?

        Amarasiri,

You may be correct up to a point amongst peers of a similar educational and economic background, thoughts and ideas that count more as per their learning’s. Though even there one would encounter prejudice and partisan self interest even in peer-reviewed scientific circles.

So-called JimyS too is correct to a point though he himself is hiding behind a pseudonym like most of the 90% to 95% of the participating readers and commentators on this platform and hence it’s not that much of a level playing field though better than the DBSJ days.

Only one like the real or so-called Tisaranee Gunesekera may have a right to remain anonymous for safety and security reasons most of the others including me it seems to be pompous arses using this platform mostly to piss, poo and discharge and vent our personal, mematic virals mental, emotional and cultural baggage to find some form relief as from a psychiatric couch from a hopeless and ever worsening situation in the land of our accidental birth for which we don’t need to be proud or ashamed of but accept it as yet another fact of life and first try to work-out our own individual salvations from the modern day seven headed Rawana and his ilk in Lanka today.

My fear is that when the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) goes about caning people, the people may decide to cane them back. Or worse, assault them, and even maim or kill. Sri Lankans are a violent people and easily aroused. It may be wise and healthy for the BBS to confine themselves to rhetoric without becoming physical.
