A True Statesman Looks At The Next Generation

By Karu Jayasuriya

According to Buddhist belief, natural disasters such as famine, floods and untimely rains occur in a country when it is ruled by unjust, wicked, corrupt and dishonest rulers. Isn’t that what is happening in our motherland today? I have no intention whatsoever to gain any political advantage from the disasters that our land is facing today, yet it must be emphasized that the pitiful victims of all these disasters are our innocent people who have been subjected to untold injustice and they remain helpless. If one pays even scant attention to what’s been happening recently in the country, it is patently obvious that the rulers of today have totally forgotten the fact that it was on the shoulders of the people they rode to power.

Instead of being sensitive to the needs of the people and attempting to solve many a problem that the people are confronted with today, the ruling cabal has chosen to ignore the people, their dire desires and problems and wants. But history bears testimony to the undisputed fact that those rulers who disregard the needs of the subject people would not rule for a long time although those rulers might think and plan otherwise. In that context, it looks like the end of the coalition Government led by the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has begun in earnest.

At this very moment of penning these woeful thoughts, we have lost a minimum of 25 lives due to inclement weather conditions that prevailed in the country during the last week or so. 33549 men, women and children belonging to 7592 families have been displaced and become roaming refugees of these disastrous weather conditions. These statistics alone tell us a grim story that is only a part of the plight of our people.

We believe that it is almost impossible to avert disasters caused by natural weather conditions, but failure on the part of our officialdom to make adequate preparations for such disasters is unforgivable.

In the subcontinent, Sri Lanka ranks third among those who are affected by natural disasters. To deal with such disasters, we have established a special Ministry with adequate financial appropriations, yet the question remains whether these Ministries and monies allocated are being put to efficient and sensible use by those who are charged with the responsibility to do so.

Simply stated, it is with utmost sadness that we record that the authorities failed even to issue an elementary warning signal to those who lived in the most vulnerable locations where such disasters occurred. It will be almost impossible to accurately ascertain the true financial value of those lives lost and properties damaged and destroyed. But it is very necessary that a proper assessment is made of these disasters in order to manage such cataclysmic events in the future. One cannot deny the economic impact these disasters would entail and the ominous forecast made by the Asian Development Bank that by 2016 this country stands to lose investments amounting to 4.3 billion if disaster management is not properly executed should be borne in mind by all.

It is in this context that we state that the current President and his governing cabal have no sense of responsibility towards the welfare of the nation. Although we faced many natural disasters in the last few years, it is apparent that we have made no attempt whatsoever to put in place a properly planned and conceptualized disaster management process; nor have shown any inclination to do so. No ruler has any moral right to abdicate the responsibility of protecting his people from disasters, natural or otherwise. It’s high time that the present rulers realized that.

Even though the rulers looked the other way, majority of our people who have been disciplined by their respective religions did go out of their easy ways to lend a helping hand to those who needed it and those good Samaritans, unlike the ruling clan, would have a conscientious sleep each night.

The situation at our centers of learning, Universities, is even more dangerous. Both students and teaching staff of our Universities have entered a battlefield of sorts to win their own rights and privileges. What happened in the Ruhunu University last week was indeed tragic and the involvement of outside elements in the handling of University affairs and executing an all-out assault on the students should be condemned by all. The independence of our University system was shattered; a protest against the holding of ‘Deyata Kirula’ is legitimate and inalienable right of each and every student of the Ruhunu University. But the authorities responded to this democratic expression of a thinking process in the most repressive and draconian manner, to say the least. On top of all that, the Minister of Higher Education declared in the most unruly (and in his usual uncouth) manner that those who protested against the Deyata Kirula hosting would have to find alternative dwelling places. The local ‘gundas’ got the green light from such statements made by the higher-ups and resorted to physically beating the University students in the most brutal manner and form. The Police once again became mere spectators. It is indeed most tragic that a political program such as ‘Deyata Kirula’ which has not generated one single opportunity for gainful employment has already caused such social havoc in the South of our country.

The University had to be closed for months in the wake of the Wayamba University hosting the last ‘Deyata Kirula’; the Ruhunu undergrads decided they would not allow that disaster to repeat itself on their own campus.

The fate of the University Dons is even more telling and demands immediate resolution. The University academics had to resort to union action last week after realizing that they had been taken for a big ‘ride’ by the Government. After reneging on the pledges given to the academics by the authorities, the situation turned a corner, making it amply obvious that the rulers are not interested in finding a solution to the many problems faced by the whole of University fraternity- academics, students and staff. It is a great betrayal of the country’s intelligentsia that the rulers have paid no attention whatsoever and allowed a monumental brain-drain for our shores simply because the legitimate demands of our academics are not even half-way met. A mere boast of making Sri Lanka a ‘center of learning’ in Asia is like a mirage and the current rulers are notorious for such empty rhetoric.

All this and more reveal that the rulers of today are utterly incompetent to bring about solutions to many problems the country is facing today. “While a politician focuses on the next election, a true statesman looks at the next generation”; such golden words are quite alien to today’s rulers of Sri Lanka. We need not be surprised by the total incompetence and lack of aptitude shown by the current rulers who are bereft of all professionalism and good governance. That indeed is a great tragedy.

    Dear Karu,

what a shamefully inaccurate understanding of Buddhism you hold. To say that the ruler is corrupt and unjust is one thing, but to bring religion into it. Shame on you, shame on you

and to think that I had hoped you would be our next president

What kind of buddhist accuracy are u talking being in a country where pseudo buddhist monks rally round to work as religious forces ? Rajapakshes wisdom has brought us to this margin today… the day they will face the GADAFI destiny is , i feel not far away.

        O Come on Rationalist!
Gathas for good Buddhists but for ‘Moda Buruwos’.

if you still consider Mara family and his ardent blind supporters are Good Buddhists, you are sadly mistaken. Mara destroyed the Buddhism with the help of majority name sake Sinhala Buddhists.

        Dear Karu J,
With great respect, I would beg you to unite the party as fast as you can and get organized to beat this lunatic madman. Talking will not do. WALK THE TALK!
Mr. Wickramasinghe thinks he can win. Whether one like it or not Sajith P must back the UNP unconditionally.

Fonseka thinks he can win. JVP also think that they can win. None of you can win this dangerous despot who is in complete control of the Media, Police force, the judiciary & the EC, unless you all come to a common platform. Win the Pres. elections first, abort the EP then you all can go on your own way and compete each other in the General elections as you wish. Get the support of Mr. Sumanthiran, Asad Sally, Mano, Shirani Bandaranayake, Sobhitha himi and most importantly CBK. If not SL will be doomed forever.
Time is running out. Its high time to stop pep talks and get serious. Mara is going thru a lean patch lets capitalize the situation.
Good luck to all my fellow Sri Lankans.

Well said! Ranil is a part of the MaRa government, He will never win, if he contests UNP will definitely loose more votes than last time. People has no trust on him, UNP leadership team has to SACK him and go for a “COMMON CANDIDATE’. Important and responsibility of the leaders is to save the country.

Do we need to talk about Gathas in a country where the larger so call buddhist majority would never think twice before making chata patas on mosquito bites while though reciting ” panathi patha weramanie sikka padam samadhiyami” ? And go a head with “adin nadana weramanee sikkapadam samadi yami” but not even thinking what they are talking about… that is the real nature SRILANKEN buddhism for the Bahutharayak ? They are a folk that would just do anything for their sake. See how many of the so called buddhists would leave with saying ” Budusarani” but straight away turning onto any illegal abusive tasks. The exemplary figure for this nature has been painted by Mahinda Rajapakshe for the folks alone during the very recent years ascending from so called war victory against own folks – though they belong to the minority fraction ?

Dear Karu Jayasuriya MP of Modern Day Sodom and Gomorrah

“According to Buddhist belief, natural disasters such as famine, floods and untimely rains occur in a country when it is ruled by unjust, wicked, corrupt and dishonest rulers. “

According to Christian belief, natural disasters such as famine, floods and untimely rains occur in a country when it is ruled by unjust, wicked, corrupt and dishonest people and they commit sins.

Sri Lanka and Tamil Eelam are Modern Day Sodom and Gomorrah.

      Read Sodom and Gomorrah

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodom_and_Gomorrah

Sodom and Gomorrah (/ˈsɒd.əm/;[1] /ɡə.ˈmɔr.ə/[2]) were cities mentioned in the Book of Genesis and throughout the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament and in deuterocanonical sources, as well as the Qur’an. Whether or not they ever existed is disputed by archaeologists.

According to the Torah, the kingdoms of Sodom and Gomorrah were allied with the cities of Admah, Zeboim and Bela. These five cities, also known as the “cities of the plain”, were situated on the Jordan River plain in the southern region of the land of Canaan. The plain, which corresponds to the area just north of the modern-day Dead Sea,[3] was compared to the garden of Eden[Gen.13:10] as being a land well-watered and green, suitable for grazing livestock.

Didn’t the”Chairmen” not one, but two of this “UNP Corporation” f,,,ed us up big time destroying a whole generation of Tamils as well as Sinhalese?.

US President and the Govt must have been unjust, wicked, dishonest and seriously corrupt for the poor New Orleans to cop that flooding disaster a few years ago.

And those poor Black people there are not even Buddhists.

Wonder whether this Chairman was around then?.

    What a low life ..

This is called Monk Mahanama Sinhala “Buddhism”

Tamils have no soul, Anatta, according to Monk Mahanama Sinhala Buddists belifs. So, they can kill them. 1958. 1983, 2009 etc. VP thought non Tamils have no–soul as well, so that he can kill them.

That is why there are hardly ant Tamil Buddhists in Sri Lanka, courtesy Monk Mahanama.

      Ponkoh Sivakumaran,

Although the War is over, natural tragedies and vehicle accidents seem to take the life of scores of the Sinhalese in the South. Could it be Karma for what the Sinhalese did to the Tamils and visa versa? My feeling is that the numbers are not enough to match what happened in the end when MR deceived VP and took KP on to the lap.

Karu says, ‘In the subcontinent, Sri Lanka ranks third among those who are affected by natural disasters. To deal with such disasters, we have established a special Ministry with adequate financial appropriations, yet the question remains whether these Ministries and monies allocated are being put to efficient and sensible use by those who are charged with the responsibility to do so’.

Why not, we have Nation building and Disaster Management Ministers who have been found with hundreds of millions in their private bank accounts just like how MR had Tsunami Funds for the Poor in his private account at the Rajagiriya Standard Chartered Bank. The files relating to these cases are collecting dust at the Attorney General’s Dept at the moment. Although Mervyn’s declaration of assets case by the Bribery Dept is in similar circumstances, the files collecting dust while they are probing the former CJ 43 for her accounts. My sincere hope is that a future UNP govt should pull all these cases and punish the whole bloody, lot so that it would be a deterrent for others in the future.

Dear Mr. Karu Jayasuriya. Please get down to brass tacks, instead of looking for Buddhist tenets to account for man-made or natural disasters that have taken place in our country. You too have made several political blunders in the past. Now take on the task of ridding this country of the tyrannical regime. Fielding a common opposition Presidential candidate is a good idea. Don’t allow Ranil to throw monkey wrenches into the effort of reaching consensus on a COMMON OPPOSITION CANDIDATE. You have to find someone popular among the Sinhala majority and acceptable to the Tamils and other minorities in the country.

Credit goes to UNP for usually not reaching out to the lowest common denominator to win cheap votes. Although what happened here? Did you forget your ethos?

Its a pity isnt it? Stuck between a rock and a hard place. A leader whose only strategy is loitering until the incumbent becomes unpopular!

General SF with his motor mouth and newly become righteous Anuna Kumara appears to resonate with voters more.

Your recent drug campaign did not inspire anyone clearly. Although now you have Modi with a reservoir of good governance policies such as efficient cabinet, FOI and anti-corruption drives that you can easily tap into for highlighting failures of the incumbent.

Do you also know there is a new thing called ‘social media’? Is any of you on it? Mahinda Rajapakse is way a head reaching on twitter, facebood etc. Copy Obama 2004 campaign, do something different, innovate and improve please.

This man’s desperation is beyond belief. Would he otherwise say idiotic things like “natural disasters such as famine, floods and untimely rains occur in a country when it is ruled by unjust, wicked, corrupt and dishonest rulers.” Will Karu tell the readers here where in Buddhism he picked up such absurdities?

If we go by Karu’s reasoning, it must be rulers’ wickedness that Japan has tsunami and earthquakes very often. Needles to say such damage are much more severe than our recent floods. Does that mean every Japanese PM (ruler) unjust, corrupt or wicked?

I think those who voted this man to parliament are much more idiotic than those who voted politically novice teli-character Paba.

      Aney Bando,
Japan is a volcanic prone country and it is not unusual. Ours is a serene country, so when disasters occur and people suffer people believe otherwise. You can not blame the people for their belief, when it is possible to live peacefully in this country. Unfortunately it is the Corrupt and the Violent who governs that make it a hell hole. To make matters worse, nature also becomes violent under such Rulers and we have buggers like you among us who are there to perish, so await your turn without trying to jump the queue.

” Needs of a subject people ” ? Are we citizens a subject people in our so-called democracy? I was under the impression that we the people, who are the State, are sovereign and that the the government is contracted to serve us.

Mr. Karu Jayasuriya, was this description of the people a mistake or a reflection of your inner perceptions?

Further, we have a proverb in Tamil- ” Arasan andru arupppaan, theivam nindru arukkum” , which means ‘ the Wrong the King does today will be avenged after some time by God’. Please remember these words, in the event you and your party return to power. I am sure you would have seen examples of this happening in your life time. The voice of the people is the voice of God and the pains and cries of the people are the pain and cry of God. As a good practicing Buddhist, I am sure you will understand this, though attributing the action and reaction to karma.

Is UNP a national political party? What tragedy that lessons had been learn from the past history governance since 1977 by UNP?
    Following mistakes has not yet correct by UNP as National party;
1 The party of UNP completed blind on emergence of new balance of political, economic, financial, social and military power in world that is radically different from past century that since 2008 that shifting influence and initiative from West to East.
2 Global economy that widely and deeply operates as a fully integrated entity with completely new and different means of capital flows, man power & labor, consumer market and developing national governments than past several decades.
3 The unsustainable of rapid emergence developing capitalism that created inequality of democratic social order past two decades.
We have gone through revolutionary era of changes than before.
UNP have to answer Who are we? That is basic question to be answer by leadership of UNP as Party!
Other wise that will be ‘indeed great tragedy’ of UNP future Political Governance in Sri lanka. We as Sri Lankan demand for intelligent, clear values-based democratic leadership; Sri Lanka need is more clear than past. Absences of any such alternative policies that UNP will be fail in Democracy in an Island.

Karu Jayasuriya is an absolutely decent human being. I have known him for that and let us keep that image. What he says here is utterly true. Depends on which family you are talking about. Maybe youll be more comfortable with the Karu family. Already son-in-law crossed the Rubicon with the father-in-law and stayed across the banks which were greener. So, now the ‘family’ has its legs on both sides of the border, waiting for that opportunity.

The above article was not meant for you and I, it was for reporting to Global capitals by the local missions; that the UNP has an emerging leader who can speak to big-picture issues.

What do you think he was doing all these years, whilst the country was going to the dogs and the Rajapakses ?

This is what happens when dates & times of importantant events are fixed on the country’s Dictator’s horoscope.First of all the election commissioner is to be given the power to fix election dates based on country’s horoscope.
Even if we could ban having a horoscope on every Lankan unless there is an astrologer who could predict his/her future within a given time.
Over to you Election commissioner. Next elections send your whole family out of Sri Lanka. We heard last Election Commissioner had to send his family to a Mandiraya during an important elections. If it is true what’s the country’s opposition doing? If they are scared for their for their lives what about us – moda raalas?
