Anarchy Or An Orderly Alternative?

By Ameer Ali

Dr. Ameer Ali

The economic devastation brought about by the GR-led regime has turned excruciatingly unbearable to millions of citizens, including to those who brought that regime to power. People have lost all confidence in the government and are not prepared to wait for another three years to see the back of it. That President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s residential site in Mirihana had become a centre of agitation like the palace of Versailles in revolutionary France, is of historic significance, because never in the history of Sri Lanka that an angry crowd led by no political leaders spontaneously marched to the residence of the country’s leader. That noisy agitation, perhaps infiltrated by agent provocateurs, resulted in violent confrontation against the police and military resulting in injuries, arrests and a police vehicle burnt down. That incident was symptomatic of the country descending into a period of anarchy, a situation that should be avoided at any cost at the moment. The scheduled demonstrations to be held on 3rd April have now been made impossible by the declaration of emergency in the Western Province. Whether such demonstrations would spread to other provinces is not sure. However, there are unmistakable signs of a Sri Lankan Spring bursting out soon. And like its Arab predecessor, it could end tragically in a winter of despair if those demonstrations were to turn violent. It would play into the hands of a President who had already reminded his critics in January 2021 when addressing a crowd at Uhana in Amapara, of a dark side to his character, which rooted in him while functioning as the Secretary of Defence in Mahinda Rajapaksa’s presidency. The GR-led regime is not going to surrender to protestors so easily and will fight tooth and nail to remain in power. In fact, Tahrir Square has a clear warning to the likes of Mirihana marchers that the ancient regime could reshape itself with a military make up to govern afresh with brutal determination.

Given the strategic location of the country in the Indian Ocean international power players like India, China and the US would not wish to see anarchy in Sri Lanka. Among the three it is India that stand to lose most. India has a long record of coming to the aid of Sri Lankan governments whenever those governments faced internal threats. By keeping to that tradition, India was reported to be considering to throw another life line worth one billion dollars to help Rajapaksa government to ease part of its financial difficulties. Modi’s India, with blessing from the US, is certainly making inroads into Sri Lankan sphere of influence to checkmate rivalling China. The long-postponed dialogue with TNA that started recently was certainly because of Indian pressure. How far would that dialogue proceed and with what promises to Tamils is yet a big unknown. The fact that Muslims are not included in that dialogue is also not surprising because Modi would like them excluded. At the same time, to appease the US, Rajapaksas are also said to be reworking on the rejected MCC deal to start with.

However, Indian inroads do bound to stir up negative reaction at least from certain quarters of the Sangha and their anti-Indian, anti-minority supremacist demagogues. Would these naysayers be rejected or controlled by a regime that came to power with their support, or, would the recalcitrant rebel against the regime, join demonstrators and add to the anarchy?

Foreign support and khaki-saffron backing at home may help the regime to continue governing for another three years, but there is no way the economy is going to bounce back as long as fundamental issues like corruption, mafia rule, nepotism, ethno-nationalism and the structural rot destroying public enterprises are tackled. It is beyond the ability and willingness of this regime to remove these evils because its political survival depends on those evils flourishing. This is why an alternative program inclusive but radical in coverage is desperately in demand.

If the opposition fails even at this stage to form an alliance of peaceful alternative while assuring the people that it would tackle not only the immediate issue of hunger and economic misery with help from IMF, the World Bank and other international institutions, but also the more fundamental issues mentioned above, which had bedeviled this nation for decades, the immediate future of the country looks bleak. The opposition, by jostling among themselves and without trying to find a common ground to unite and confront the common enemy, is failing the desperate citizenry. A united front with a promising rescue package would certainly swing international support to its favour. The diaspora community is also waiting for such an alternative. More than seven decades of rot must be stopped if Sri Lanka to be saved.

    Leelage Malli,

If I’m not mistaken you or someone asked about Gota and Basil being prosecuted for money laundering.

    Please read this ……… https://www.ice.gov/news/releases/ice-hsi-investigation-leads-guilty-plea-former-sri-lankan-ambassador-defrauding

If there is the will of whatever government that replaces the Rajapakses – and if Trump is not in power again: he is even a worse crook – The US can be persuaded to investigate them.

Even if the US doesn’t have solid evidence of Rajapakses’ financial-crimes, they can still get them through the IRS for tax-evasion. ……… They (Eliot Ness) couldn’t pin any of his crimes on Al Capone but still got him in a roundabout way for tax evasion/defrauding.

Check up on how they got Paul Manafort (for money earned outside of the US) ………….. he had to forfeit his money and all his houses/apartments. …….Later Trump pardoned him: don’t know if he got to keep his loot after the pardon.

Nimal . F is right in that US laws actually permit to freeze illegal/corrupt money and assets , file charges so that, if person found guilty can be punished for crime / corruption committed outside of the US territory. This clause was introduced, I believe during Obama’s term.

Forgot to mention the money Jaliya made was later sent to Lanka to his or Rajapaksas account. Because the transactions were conducted in US soil and US Feds were well aware by then, of Mafia family’s corruption, just kept close eye on the paper trail. The offence was intentional misinformation of sale price, and not fraud because it will be difficult to prove, upon reaching Lanka banks.. Hence the case took more time than usual , until Jaliya was cornered to admit his own fraud. The guy had no choice because he could not either leave or hold a position.(reappointment). That is why the prison term is only /max 5 years.

So the game plan is clear. Sri Lanka will be in Lockdown on the basis of a Media narratives and staged protests until the IMF debate and operation for Washington to take over Lanka’s economy is done on April 8 in Parliament..This is like the CIA staged colour revolutions and regime change operations during the Arab Spring..
Every year since the Staged Easter 2019 attacks (that were claimed by ISIS which was set up by the CIA after the Invasion of Iraq to do Regime change in Syria), in March-April Sri Lankans are put in lockdown and often war games are conducted in its Indian Ocean coast..
This is a pattern for past 4 years and on some pretext the people are put in- lock down Lanka in March-April: After the Easter attacks there were 2 months of economically destructive lockdown while in 2020 and 2021 Covid-19 was used as an excuse for 2 years of economically devastating lockdowns which enable external actors to asset strip lands and mineral and capture systems and institutions while society and economy was decimated. The American Rajapakse brothers are addicted to curfews… This year the Endgame of the curfew is to facilitate and prevent protests against the IMF and Washington’s capture of Sri Lanka’s economy with the collusion of the corrupt and incompetent US citizen Rajapakse Minister of Economic Disaster.
This is a Full Spectrum Dominance (FSD) operation. Sri Lanka is paying for rejecting the MCC compact in 2019, just as Pakistan must pay for Imran Khan’s visit to Russia.

You have a point about a staged protest in Mirihana. There is reason to suspect it.
But that does not exclude genuine protesters joining in.
The violence was a necessary part of whatever was staged, if it was.

For the sake of those suffering, please take your medicine. Protest next day in NuweraEliya and many spontaneous ones and amidst curfew few today , to a delusional and paranoid may look staged. Of you continue to be noncompliant with treatment soon current suffering too may appear staged.

He is parroting out what I have been saying in these columns. The talks with TNA is to find solutions (whether genuine or sham) to accountability and reconciliation as demanded by UNHCR, which includes the right of displaced to return to their land and carriage of justice to those held in remand for long period. These problems relate only to Tamils. Therefore his statement that Muslims were not included and to bring Modi into it, is mischievous. In the social media, Muslims have started attacking India at the instigation of Pakistani agents, saying that they are afraid that Srilanka will become a state of India. Some Muslims have posted anti-Tamil rhetoric, saying that by engaging with Tamils overseas, LTTE sympathizers will become cabinet ministers. What is wrong if any person capable to save the country being given top position. Government has started targeting Muslims by stating that fundamentalists were seen among protesters. I will not be surprised, if the government with the help of Muslim members of military intelligence, will organize another bout of suicide bombing to disperse protesters.

          Dear SM.
(My regret diverting from the subject of essay.)
“All things man-made shall pass away”.
          Not only man-made.
There is reference to this in Buddhist texts; It is Anicca or “ transient and impermanent”.
Recognition of the fact that anicca characterizes EVERYTHING is one of the first steps in the Buddhist’s spiritual progress toward enlightenment.
For anything to exist and continue, there must be change – impermanence. Even human beings change over their short lifetime in physical and mental states.
Some religions give solace by prayer to deities, for change, Buddhism instead points to the obvious – impermanace – and to accept it with mental strength and find your solace.

For seven decades ethno-nationalism, or anti-Tamil, anti-Muslim attitude in the Sinhalese population has been imprinted by the Sinhalese leaders, and rulers. It will take a long time to change this negative attitude.

Sinhalese people, both educated and uneducated ones believe that the country is for Sinhala Buddhists, only and by excluding the minorities they can prosper better than the ‘Others’.

In a burning house opportunists are waiting to plunder. Only when the Sinhalese in general come to believe that by including the minorities to share the national pie there will be peace and prosperity for all. We they learn from the present misery?

Will the opportunist politicians, the Buddhist prelates or the armed forces allow and an enlightened solution to the problem? If no satisfactory solution is found we will take the path of Egypt and others. God only knows what will happen!

    • 2
      13

“Sinhalese people, both educated and uneducated ones believe that the country is for Sinhala Buddhists”

If that was the case, only Sinhala-Buddhists would live on the island. LTTE fought to establish a separate state for Tamils. An apartheid state similar to Nazi Germany. Actually, Nazi Germany was more democratic than the fascist “Eelam.” Anyway, those opportunists who support the fall of the Gota regime should understand this: there will be no federal state, no separate state, not even provincial councils. If any new leader tries to negotiate otherwise, the majority (Sinhalese) will immediately elect another hardliner similar to Gotha. Regardless of the state of the island, it will not be divided along ethnic lines.

        Lester,
“If any new leader tries to negotiate otherwise, the majority (Sinhalese) will immediately elect another hardliner similar to Gotha.”
Don’t you have a shred of logic left in what is loosely termed your “brain” ?
The Sinhalese did elect Gota. Even the most stupid of Sinhalese wants him out 2 years later. Even the most stupid of Sinhalese knows now that racist economics doesn’t work.
Even the most stupid Sinhalese doesn’t want another Gota.

        • 1
          2

The Sinhalese elected Gota because extremist Muslims blew up hundreds of people as they were upset with a (white) exremist who attacked a mosque in New Zealand. What is your point? You cannot admit the LTTE are terrorists, yet you call Gota a racist? Pot calling kettle black.

Entire srilanka is under fire. You the kind of ultra idiots are playing housanas to them yet today… SHAMELESSNESS has no margins in you the kind of sinhalayas.

You the kind of Gota s backlickers are still licking his balls in public. Why ?
            :
If Gota was that wise – would he ever harm the farming community by introducing ” organic manure” instead of ” fertilizer”… knowing that 2022 and 2023 the nation will have to face all the worst debt burdens. Good governance made it very clear, the installments that the nation has to pay back in 2022 and 2023 will be the highest.
            .
As if an early teenager would dream of touching the sky – telling his/her own parents ….. Gota had the naivity to fool not only LESTERS LIKE stupid men dominated srialnka but also entire world – remember the buggers words in that UNO assembly ” we will make srilanka a 100% organic country”:…
            .
My dog is comparatively more intelligent than anyone in that brutal family… besides, Gota lived in the US for a period of 15 long years before he attained his enlightement to be partiot, with his brother becoming the president in 2005. That alone proved the bugger was a champion in egoism.

Economic devastation of Sinhale started on the day Ranil became the PM. When regime change mafia brought Ranil to power, his job was to ruin the economy which he did very cleverly. He borrowed, borrowed, borrowed but no one knows what happened to that money because there is no output. Rajapaksas are now terrorizing Silly Lanka. Came to power after a staged explosion promising eternal security. Today country is under Rajapaksas emergency, curfew till Monday just to prevent further protests, no food, medicine, electricity or transport, calling protesters as extremist, few still in custody, exactly what they did to Noth and East for a decade. SB enjoyed then and I hope they still do.

…. a dark side to his character.
This is no revelation, is this.
    .
… the regime could reshape itself with a military make up to govern. …. ?
Hasn’t the regime had ‘a military make up’ from the very start.
    .
Would these naysayers ( read, the Sangha ) be rejected or controlled by a regime that came to power with their support … .
This is pure conjecture. There is no reason to oblige ‘ the Sangha’. The partnership is for mutual benefit. You break it when it is no more beneficial!
    .
… the more fundamental issues, corruption, mafia rule, nepotism, ethno-nationalism and the structural rot, are so deeply entrenched in the psyche of the political class, uprooting them would be a tall order.
If any attempt were to me made against
corruption — the politicians themselves would override the order
mafia rule — the ‘drug Lords’ would undercut the regime
nepotism — the Rajapaksas themselves would undermine the policy
ethno-nationalism — The Sangha would be up-in-arms and arouse the public
    ….
    .
Change is possible. No timetable is feasible.

Rajapaksas were good when they attracted foreign capital into the country. But they did not know how to structure it to benefit the Masses. From Chinese debt burdens to US trying to capitalize on our ancient lands + India, they just do not have the wherewithal and savviness to compromise and get the best out of the Big Powers. Only Oligarchs vs. Abject Poverty now remain. They failed. They must bow they heads to the people and leave with honor. Force-staying on and attempting to use other parties’ manifestos is shameful and dishonorable.

People will forgive them and they might be able to come back at another time. Money of the hardworking-suffering-Lankan-Masses stuck in Krypto might come to fruition at a later date. Russians might overturn the Global Monetary Order. Till then, we need a government to work on the Essentials of Reality!

Can you list the debt burdens please.
Which is the biggest lending sector to Sri Lanka?

      • 1

Don’t be a chaff again. The Royal Bonds are biggest loan to Lankawe. Before Royals relinquish power(if that will happen) by the nagging of protests, bonds must be first redeemed. Otherwise no resignation from Royals.

It was the usual inflow that came to the country for its free trade policies since 1977.The plain fact is, whatever the foreign capital that came into SL between 2005-2015 were all siphoned off to unnumbered accounts in Bahamas Switzerland Seychelles etc by this world class pirates!!

      Grandma,
Do you, now, understand why the Middle Class has to take responsibility to wipe out the political – Intellectual elite class and redeem the country. Because middle class are people genocide(classcided) by Royals. They have to stand up and reclaim their share in the society. Usual attribute of the Middle class in countries is they are not poor, while they possess the tools to control the democratic government. Because from 1948, Lankawe governments are only shadow democratic, or rather elected dictatorship, only politicians and the poor are controlling the governments’ moves. This is why Appe Aanduwas are only interested in Classicide Middle class and create poor out of them. That adds muscle to their voting base. Educated-erudite people have to show the path to the Middle class how to redeem the country.

However, Indian inroads do bound to stir up negative reaction at least from certain quarters of the Sangha and their anti-Indian, anti-minority supremacist demagogues.
    ———
Anti-Indian hatred is not unique to Sinhala supremacists. I have seen a lot of it from Lankan muslims and even Tamils from the NE.
The up country (Indian origin) Tamils are perhaps the only exception to this.

The fundamental issue are the tares and freemasons.
Take them out of power, world wide and see how fast things change.

“Would these naysayers be rejected or controlled by a regime that came to power with their support, or, would the recalcitrant rebel against the regime, join demonstrators and add to the anarchy?”

When the war ended in 2009, Dayan Jayatilleka was gloating about the “victory” and heaping accolades on the Rajapaksas on CT, I told him that people’s memories would be short-lived, that the euphoria of the win would soon give way to the reality of the Pyrrhic victory, and the country would reach rock-bottom and turn on the Rajapaksas before it could turn things around.

I was wrong in thinking that it would happen sooner, say within 5 years of the war; it has taken 13 years and the unfortunate reality is that the country is still sliding down–no rock-bottom yet–, but I was right about the trend. As Tisaranee Gunasekara would agree, the people of SL still need to do a lot of soul-searching about how they came to this pass.

“If the opposition fails even at this stage to form an alliance of peaceful alternative while assuring the people that it would tackle not only the immediate issue of hunger and economic misery with help from IMF, the World Bank and other international institutions, but also the more fundamental issues mentioned above, which had bedeviled this nation for decades, the immediate future of the country looks bleak. “
Opposition will do that when they see an opportunity for another Yahapalanaya. If that happen they will again behave like old Yahapalanaya, i.e. starting with Central Bank looting and ending at 4/21. Like Lemon Puff Weeraya and Ganapathipillai breaking away at the last minute of the Royal government’s collapse, New kin, Ranil. Valaiththodam, Champike all will break from each other> The net effect of that will be only posepoening the people revolution another 5 or 6 or seven years latter.

Agents provocateurs can infiltrate the most disciplined of protests that the beleaguered citizenry mount through sustained desperation and starvation. Those unsavoury elements who incite violence can be acting at the behest of not just a cornered regime and its sycophant agents but a salivating opposition also. A peaceful revolution can bring about a system change that rids the country of the two major power blocs that share the spoils of election victory every four or five years. Then, grassroots level activists who have proven records of community service can be appointed to positions of power. Since the constitution is ineffective in stopping or even reducing grand corruption or injustice from law enforcement or the judiciary, the sovereignty of the people must emerge from sustained will against those who will do anything to hold on to power or take their turn (ie opposition) for power.

Your each line makes sense. But nature is like this. If the baby cries only the mother knows it needs milk. Another nature is if the people are protesting because of their living conditions, there will be certain amounts of anarchy. People, on their own, are not a Western country office staff, to behave. The anarchy out of people protest normally doesn’t resemble like thesabortages by organized groups’ , uniform in all area, like setting fire to people residences, raping women or lynching children, murdering innocents, In the past organized pogroms, the damage was created to people, just because they are looking or smelling different from the gangs. Aanduwa right away blaming the protest on defunct LTTE and Government created jihadists.

This is an indication that Aanduwa may be willing this to turn into another pogrom on Tamils or on all minorities. Royals need at least three more years to make the Demulu Pariah Dr. Jaisankar pay for it and they have redeemed all the bonds they lent to Aanduwa through Western Stock Markets. Once they have completely sucked the country, leaving the sick and unfix-able behind, they will go to Uganda, Belarus…… Sampanthar Aiyya, who has no clues, is negotiating for a local solution. The word going to be from Royals is “We are pacifying the economically destructive force TNA,. so tomorrow milk and honey will flow in the country.” If Royals take it up to the next election, the Ceylon Island will be auctioned to the highest bidder, in 2014.
