Anti-Muslim Attacks: Maithri Passes The Buck, Blames Police

President Maithripala Sirisena who has in the past ordered the Police to carry out impartial investigations on various crimes, in his capacity as the Head of State, has this time around passed the buck, evading responsibility and has instead blamed the police for allowing anti-Muslim attacks to escalate in the country. He had blamed the police during yesterday’s SLFP Central Committee meeting.

President Sirisena

His comments comes as yet another Muslim owned shop in Kahawatte was torched by an unidentified group. Meanwhile, the Colombo Telegraph learns that during the meeting presided by Sirisena yesterday, the Muslim ministers who are SLFP members had remained mum and instead it was several junior members of the party who had expressed their growing concerns over the violence against their community. Several non-Muslim members had also supported the junior Muslim members and had said that steps must be taken to put an end to these attacks against the minority community.

Even though Sirisena appeared to be soft peddling the issue and has failed to take action against the hate crime culprits led by Bodu Bala Sena’s (BBS) General Secretary Galagoda Atte Gnanasara, Sirisena was quick to express his condolence to the people of Manchester following today’s attack, all while his very own people were being attacked by hardcore Buddhist groups with mosques and shops owned by Muslims coming under increasing attack since last month. Since the escalation of attacks against Muslims last week, neither has Sirisena or Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe issued any official statements condemning the attacks on the Muslims.

Over the weekend, Sirisena also shot down a request by Muslim MPs who wanted to meet him to discuss the growing attacks against their community. Amidst rising tensions, Sirisena left for Australia today. Meanwhile, the US Ambassador in Sri Lanka and the EU Office in Colombo have expressed concern and have called on the Government to take prompt action against the growing hate crimes in the country.

Although he came to power assuring an end to racism, Sirisena seems to have in the recent past forgotten his promise, and appears to be following in the footsteps of ex-President Mahinda Rajapaksa. During Rajapaksa’s reign, Muslims came under serious attack in the hands of groups such as BBS, Ravana Balaya which resulted in Rajapaksa losing a sizable amount of the minority votes at the election, for failing to take action against the culprits. The attacks against Muslims escalated in 2014 when BBS led groups to Aluthgama, Beruwala and Dharga Town killing at least 4 people, injuring more than 80 and rendering hundreds homeless. The anti-Muslim riots resulted in many homes, mosques and shops being attacked and torched. Despite the severity of the attack, the mainstream media in the country censored news on the riots. No No No, let things happen and wait for an explosion to occur… nothing will change otherwise..
Let Srisena & Ranil enjoy their foreign trips and loose every thing they have..Mahinda can take over and “finish” the rest of the nation..end of the story.

Tamils & Muslims can go and fly a kite at Galle Face & celebrate, if they are going to be still alive…

    Lanka.. Lanka…it’s all finished.

So long the law would not work equally, but to the word, nothing dramatically will change in this country.

These men all can easily be identified with those of Pakistan or any other criminal states.
But only the outer cover is different since so called majority of people are born buddhists. Most of them are but rascals, let control by Rajapakshe rascals. Latter men have ruined the country being the real representatives of the uncultured rascals.

I denounce injustice, suppression, violence and terror.—— The Minister of Law and Order should resign for his inaction to curtail the escalation of communal disharmony.——- The law and order in the North and the South display a stark difference. A number of Commemorations were held in the memory of Prabhakaran and his banned LTTE outfit displaying LTTE Flags and Eelam Maps. Nothing was done. Tamil and Muslim Politicians make racist remarks and hate speeches almost every day. The Minister never warned them. An armed group called AAVA is terrorizing the public in the North. Many Sinhalese families, Buddhist Temples and Army Camps in the North were either invaded or threatened to leave by various groups led by Tamil Politicians. Buses went from the South were attacked. Nothing was done.—- However, arbitrary arrests and political witch-hunt on Sinhalese Nationalist Politicians, the Armed Forces and Buddhist Monks in the South are going on. Frequent tear gas, water cannons and battoning on protesters in the South could be seen almost everyday.——- On the other hand the attacks on Mosques remain unresolved enabling interested parties to put the blame on Buddhists.——- The Minister of Law and Order has proved that he is not capable of restoring law and order in the country. He should be replaced forthwith and before terror and violence reign all over the country.—- Given the gravity and the sensitivity of the matter, the President should take over the Law and Order Portfolio. People have no faith in the Minister of Law and Order. The President however was capable of retaining the trust of Tamils and Muslims. Even Sinhalese to some extent, of course with some reservations, trust the President to handle the law and order of the country than that of the incumbent Minister or the Prime Minister.

Rajash—— That is not true. The State did its duty to protect innocent citizens from LTTE’s carnage. Our Army paid a heavy price to free Tamils from being massacred by Tamil Terrorists. Someone from your own ethnicity savaged his own people in the North. We can’t forget the noble service done by our Army to eradicate LTTE terrorism which devastated the country for 30 years. We are grieving for our fallen soldiers. If you have forgotten the soldies who sacificed their lives in order to save Tamils have grieving families who are left in the darkness. I am surprised to see some people think that they have a right to be killed by terrorists and the State has no right to save them!

Sinhalese Buddhists don’t believe in iconoclasm. Therefore, they gain nothing by attacking Mosques/Churches.——- There is no proof that Gnanasara Thero or any Buddhist is involved in any mysterious attacks on Mosques..—— For an example about the recent attack on the Mosque in Kurunegala, actually the suspicion should first be directed to the Mosque itself. According to the Police, despite CCTV cameras being attached to the building, footage of the attack has not been recorded. Why?—- Not only that, in some similar attacks on Muslims or Mosques, the perpetrators remain unidentified making it easy or as a deliberate attempt to put the blame on Buddhists.—– It is interesting to note that soon after the attack in Kurunegala, the US Ambassador tweeted condemning the attack. Eventhough it was in the generalized form, as the majority in the country are Buddhists, it is unavoidable the blame to be fallen on them. However, I don’t remember him tweeting about beheading a Buddha statue in the North and/or the systematic attacks on Buddhist antiquities and temples in the North and the East. A steady continuation of these attacks/destruction could be seen years back. Eg: Bulldozing of Muhudu Maha Vihara in Potuwil (built 2000 years ago), a Parivara Chethiya of Deeghavapi Chethiya in Ampara (built in 3rd BCE) and Mottayagala Gamini Tissa Monastery Dagoba (built 3000 years ago), the forcible acquisition of Kuragala Buddhist Monastery (built in 2nd Century) and the shrewd invasion of Dambulla (built in 2700 years ago) Buddhist Sacred Zone. The concerns of Buddhists were neglected by successive governments.—— Moreover, the failure to implement the law in order to stall the systematic deforestation of Wilpattu, Mullativu, Mannar and Vavuniya Rain Forest Reserves and construction of illegal human settling sites have paved its way to a religious twist.

Native Vedda—– You should read the findings of those cases. How many Buddhists, how many Christians, how many Muslims and how many Hindus were charged for attacking religious places?—— As I said above, I don’t approve violence and terror. I never support any outfit or individual who engage in such activities. Nobody has the power to undo those attacks. The need of the hour is not to let that happen again. The Government should address the concerns of Buddhists too. The total negligence of successive governments in addressing the issue made matters worse. The law and order should prevail in the country. The Minister should take the responsibility for escalation of religious unrest. He failed his duty.

That is what has been bothering little Sri Lanka over the years what is bothering Manchester today, Right now. Many years ago Manchester was United in assisting the vest interests of the Tamils. Your imagination is running riot. Built 3000 years ago? Even before the Buddha was born?
Don’t you think all this nonsense about “historic sites” is over the top? Dig anywhere in Sri Lanka, and you will find something historic, even if it is only a couple of bricks from a palace . This does not mean that all these places have to be conserved. That is an idiotic idea. In other countries, if something is found on a construction site, the archaeologists are given a few weeks to investigate, and construction continues.
A country cannot progress if every ancient temple or whatever must be restored to its original state. Just look at some of the formerly ruined stupas in Anuradhapura now restored using modern technology. Can this be justified as conservation?

How does he even know they were Sinhalese ? A people called the Sinhalese only came into definite existence around the 8TH century. Most of these were built by Tamil or Tamil speaking Naga Buddhists. Many of these Buddhist sites were Mahayana and Theravadha. Ancient Tamil Buddhists belonged to both sects, whereas the Sinhalese only belonged to the Theravadha sect, therefore would not have been building Mahayana Buddhist monuments. Now they are Sinhalising all these ancient Tamil sites. Pottuvil is now Pottuwila. Amparai. in Ampara. Kantalai is now Kantale. Allai has become Alla

Dear Old Codger—- According to the inscriptions found at the Mottayagala site (as described in the book by Prof. Paranavithana) they were between 3rd and 1st BC. (This is the 21st century so you add 151 years to each) I should have mentioned like that and I rarely read twice before sending. As I had to stop 300 word count that was my best.—— Historic sites are nonsense? It is the history which defines who we are. I am proud of our Sinhalese history, culture and Buddhist civilization. We have a history that goes back 5000 years. Our country was built by Sinhalese Buddhist Kings and our ancestors. It was Sinhalese Warrior Kings not Tamils or Muslims who fought to protect the country. Sinhalese had to fought with life to protect the country from many brutal South Indian, Portuguese, Dutch and British invaders. Sinhalese were massacred by invaders throughout our history. What is left is only 15.2 million Sinhalese.——– The Pure Buddhism only prevails in Sri Lanka. We have a right to protect Buddhism.—— The Suppression of the voice of Sinhalese Buddhists who tried to protect Buddhism and our historic Buddhist antiquities continued for a long time purely due to political reasons.—— In order to protect Buddhism, it is high time Sinhalese Buddhists have their own Political Party same like Tamils and Muslims. I want each and every Buddhist to realize their power. Though our equanimity was abused for years, resorting to intimidation will only lead to violence, branding us as savages and making us lose our Buddhist heritage and values that we protected this far. Going against Lord Buddha’s Teachings in order to protect Buddhism is insane and illogical. We have to raise our voice collectively and powerfully but peacefully.

I don’t see how it is necessary, or in accordance with the Teachings of Buddha, to fight against perceived or real enemies to protect the Dhamma. If that is the case, I would rather allow it to die than kill someone. Everyone, even a suicide bomber, is the son of some mother and also the son of some father. For any mother, a son is more valuable than all the books, all the teachings, all the teachers and prophets in the world. In any case modern technology allows us to protect the Dhamma without destroying its would be destroyers. We can transfer all the writings to soft copies (and even videos etc.) and put them in a safe place such as the cloud to be used by later generations. A more advanced and tamper proof way is to use A blockchain. The greatest thing about a blockchain is that not even the person who added the data can ever modify the contents. It is as secure against tampering as Quantum encryption. Wikepedia describes it as is a distributed database that maintains a continuously growing list of records, called blocks, secured from tampering and revision. Each block contains a timestamp and a link to a previous block. By design, blockchains are inherently resistant to modification of the data — once recorded, the data in a block cannot be altered retroactively. The question now is how to protect ancient monuments and sites. But this too can be done. It is too complex and long to describe in a comment.

No, historic sites are not nonsense. But trying to conserve every insignificant artifact is extremely stupid. Do you think other countries don’t respect their history? Recently, an ancient monastery was discovered under a motorway in York, England. The Anglican Church did not try to claim the site. It was handed over to the archaeologists for 3 weeks. It is idiotic to regard every little abandoned temple as a sacred site.

“It was Sinhalese Warrior Kings not Tamils or Muslims who fought to protect the country. Sinhalese had to fought with life to protect the country from many brutal South Indian, Portuguese, Dutch and British invaders. Sinhalese were massacred by invaders throughout our history. “
Are you absolutely sure that you yourself have no South Indian ancestors? Wasn’t your claimed ancestor Vijaya from India?
For your information, our modern country was NOT built by ancient kings. It was built by these very same invaders, maybe for their own purposes. If your ancient kings were still in charge, you would have no right even to whitewash your house (if you had one). You would not be able to engage in business if or even join your precious Maha Sangha if you were non- Goigama.
Don’t forget it was the Dutch who facilitated the Amarapura nikaya.
So, Champa, it is better not to talk about your ancient kings, because there is no way you would have enjoyed life under them!

War is nothing but blood and gore. and that is what Islam stands for in the land of infidel and Lanka while bleeding Asia of its resources.

At the last Presidential election, I voted for MR while I was holidaying in Sri Lanka. But if this government makes a commitment to wipe out the Muslims, I will vote for them any day.

People, say Gnanassara Thero’s attempted arrest that day in Kurunegala was because of Muslim influence. I flatly reject this. I think the government is behind this. Because when they do that without warrant, people get agitated unnecessarily. Even people on the sidelines will get on the BBS bandwagon. The Govt. works according to a plan, more support for BBS means more chances of instigating the Muslims. Means more chances of a Muslim reprisal and then all bets are off.

Another ’83 style pogrom. Hey Muslims, get your HDTVs, Cameras and Refrigerators out. The poor Sinhalese people are salivating at the prospect of having them. And don’t forget the Gold.

So this is what happens when they give semi-literate beggars in Negombo internet access. They look up fancy terms like “Hegel” and write gibberish. You should stick to your three-wheeler profession.

This MR2 (Maithripala/Ranil) government is no better than their predecessors, the MR1 (Mahinda Rajapaksa) lot, possibly even worse because they haven’t even issued a token condemnation of the violent, racist actions of the BBS.
It seems like, short of organizations like ISIS making their presence felt in Sri Lanka, this government which appears to be distinguishing itself by displaying a total lack of principle, morality or ethics, will sacrifice the minorities on the altar of political expediency and the need not to antagonise the Galagoda Aththa’ of this country.
Disgraceful now and tragic before too long, I’m afraid.
However, as several of us have identified in the past, this is part of the “insurance-buying” of senior members of this government who will continue to hunt with the MR2 hounds while running with the MR1 hares, probably awaiting the return of the Mahinda Rajapaksa lot to REALLY reap the benefits of their double-dealing. Will it take naming the worst of this lot to, at least, reduce their impact on current government policy?

This problem and the inaction against those who committed financial crimes during the past regime could be easily solved if the President kicks out the Minister of Justice and Minister of Law and Order replace them with people like Mano Ganesan and General Sarath Fonseka. Give those who can do the job the positions Mr. President.

If Sirisena cannot get the rabid Gnanasara arrested for crimes done by him Sirisena should resign his presidency because he is not fit to be president as he is unable to do even this.

Native Vedda: what you are talking is Tamil Tribal custons. Just the wsay muslims behave with their famale house workers, Tamils too have indian Caste – mentality in which they abuse young female children from low castes. So, you should be a UNP voter and Tamil low caste.

Yes caste is an ugly aspect of Hinduism. But what i find interesting is how Sinhalese have also adopted the caste system. Dont pretend its not happening. Premadasa was the only low caste Sinhala ruler in post colonial Sri Lanka. And he was paranoid that the upper caste Sinhalese were plotting against him. Lower caste Army commander Sarath Fonseka was thrown in prison for contesting for the presidency. His caste rank was probably the reason he was arrested.
There is a lecture called ‘The black untouchables of India’ by a Tamil dalit called Dr Velu Annamalai. And he explains how the upper castes converted to other religions like Islam, Christianity, Buddhism and Sikhism after the lower castes converted. This was so they could establish slavery once again.

We Muslims are always in Allahs views, He is the Watcher too of all that is happening
so do not worry about when we should see him , you just ponder on the plight of the Rajappaksa s and the likes of Gnanassara s are they free of their evil actions ? Punishment is hanging over their heads.
The Srilankan justice if it is flawed and the justice minister s protection of the most cruel man who is the architect of all the white van s and killings will one day take its toll. You just watch.

The Punishment needs not to hang anywhere, but it could have been on the hands of the criminals, unless Muslim Leaders like Hakeem, Rishard et al go to tell UNHRC that they were very happy and well cared by Old Royals. Allah is only a gullible god believing and letting go Old Royals when selfish Muslim leaders tell Old Royals are good, but then turning back and letting the punishment hanging over their heads when the Selfish Muslims are telling Old Royals are bad. What kind of tune these Muslims leaders playing and what kind dance Allah is performing to that dance?

Just go man; go and do something good instead wasting your time on CT!

Mallaiyuran you are a disturbed person , criminals are criminals how can punishment be in their hands when they are doing an evil act , when the evil act is done punishment will be “hanging over their heads”. Hope you understand that and suggest that you should brush up on your writing before posting to CT .

Don’t be a gullible like Allah. Muslim, Read it right; It is not written as “the punishing job of criminals is in the hand of criminals”, though it is better than leaving it to Allah to hang the punishments on ropes over each criminals’ head. (there somebody is responsible to implement it)

THis Sirisena is fast proving to be one of the most indecisive, ineffectual leaders it has been our misfortune to have. To think I cast my vote in his favour to bring him into Presidency!

When Manthri’s son gets involved in night club brawls he gets directly involved to rescue his son and has done so on a few occasions by influencing the police. How come he passes the buck this time. All these politicians are one and the same. We need a young honest leader like l Justin Trudeau or may be Macron. We need to do away with all the old horses MR, MS, RW as they are not the future of this country anymore.
