Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa would lead any alliance or government formed in collaboration with the SLFP faction led by President Maithripala Sirisena, the Joint Opposition (JO) has decided.
The meeting of the JO was held at the personal residence of Sri Lanka Freedom Party Chairman G.L. Peiris, in Colombo, last night (09).
Addressing the meeting attended by a large number of JO seniors and party leaders, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa spoke about widespread speculations on forming a coalition government with President Maithripala Sirisena.
The former President said he had made no decision to enter into an alliance with Sirisena and assured JO leaders would be consulted before making any such commitment.
UPFA Parliamentarian Janaka Tennakoon, a senior member of SLFP, said there could not be two leaders in any government.
“Our leader is Mahinda Rajapaksa. Any future government – be it coalition or caretaker – should be led by Mahinda Rajapaksa,” Tennakoon said.
The leaders of the JO then decided to empower former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to make a final decision on the matter, on behalf of the group.
There are conflicting views within the JO group on the possibility of forming a new government or alliance with President Sirisena. While a section of the group is pushing for an alliance with Sirisena, a sizable proportion of its members have opined that the SLPP should work towards the dissolution of the current Parliament and form a new government with a fresh mandate.
The group led by Basi Rajapaksa, the chief ideologue of the Rajapaksa group, believes that entering into an alliance with Sirisena will put the party at a disadvantage at the Presidential election.
Basil Rajapaksa had stressed that a new government should be formed with a fresh mandate.

Hi Janaka may I reciprocate…..I just returned from Sri Lanka , I traveled upcountry, Hambantota, and along the south coast…. every where I went the Sinhala people treated me with respect. I stopped over at Habantota Shangri la for lunch, after lunch I realised that I left my mobile phone in the car, I was not able to call the driver (Sinhalese as well) to bring the car come around to the lobby, the car was parked in the car park far away. I haven’t been to Digana or Teldeniya to incite anybody in person or through social media.
CT will vouch that, instead I posted comments after comments here asking Sinhalese to not to fall for the government trap and attack Muslims. I praised Buddhist priests who went to Mosques and stayed there overnight giving them protection and some other Buddhist priests who patrolled areas where Muslims predominantly reside. Many media published the photos of their benevolence acts towards Muslims.
The international media first reported that Sinhalese Buddhists were attacking Muslims. But then later they changed their version to “government sponsored goons.” Muslims attacked temples and Sinhalese too, but those incidents were concealed and only Sinhalese were apprehended.
If you think that I will run away at the sight of the word “racist” you are very much mistaken. I stay here and expose all the lies of Tamils and Muslims against us.

Basil never had any ideology. Moreover he never cared about Mahinda. Otherwise who would run away when Mahinda mostly needed the emotional support of his own blood? Mahinda’s election manager ran away the moment he was defeated. :D :D :D He came back for a purpose and it is “now showing.”
Basil Rajapaksa clearly is double acting. The moment the tide turns the other way as against his plans, he quickly changes his previous stance.
