By Sarath de Alwis –
“The future has many names: for the weak it means the unattainable; for the fearful, it means the unknown; for the courageous, it means opportunity.” Victor Hugo the French writer provided this advice to France in the turbulent days of the end of the ‘ancien régime’ and the birth of the new republic.
Meaningful change occurs when a vision is combined with realism and pragmatism to turn it into something tangible, concrete. Clarity of ideas shape reality. The NPP presented its party manifesto today- 26th August. I watched the finely choreographed presentation on YouTube. I listened to the candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake (AKD). This is my take.
Words that acquire new meaning in the public psyche are the loudest witnesses of unfolding history. They offer the rationale for profound change that suddenly convulses society. “Arbudaya’,’ Aragalaya’ and ‘Punaradaya’ are three such Sinhala words. Crisis, Struggle and Renaissance’
As historian Eric Hobsbawm explains, such words at pivotal points of a nation’s history help us measure the profundity of the change that inevitably follows when the critical mass of the literate segment of society redefine those words, make sense out of them and convert them to reality on ground.
The times of Adam Smith, David Ricardo and Karl Marx are different from the times we live in today.
Hobsbawm writes about the new economic order that has failed but persists in its folly.
“We live in a world captured, rooted and upturned by the titanic economic and techno-scientific process of the development of capitalism, which has dominated for the past two or three centuries. We know that it cannot go on ad infinitum. The future cannot be a continuation of the past, and there are signs that we have reached a point of historic crisis. The forces generated by the techno-scientific economy are enough to destroy the environment, that is to say, the material foundations of human life… Our world risks both explosion and implosion. It must change… If humanity is to have a recognizable future, it cannot be by prolonging the past or present… The price of failure, the alternative to a changed society, is darkness.“
We are living through an epochal transformation of our social, cultural and political values.
No matter what, this presidential election will irrevocably breach the neo liberal capitalist order of prioritizing profit over people, economy over equity, GDP over social discontent.
It is time for a new order, a new model of freedom. This breach of the existing order will be steered by a largely monolingual, politically alert aspirational middle class that wish to educate their offspring to meet the demands of the digital or techno scientific age.
The Policy Manifesto has a simple tag line. ‘Pohosath Ratak Lassana Jeevitayak. – A rich land, A delightful life.
AKD insisted his movement – the NPP was in determined pursuit of a ‘Renesasance”. He promised the end of elite politics. He promised to end the free rides of the oligarchic class. He promised the end of crony capitalism.

Sarath de Alwis, you say we are living through a transformation of all our values. Time for a new order and freedom you say. So, what do you expect to happen next.

Sad to say investor confidence that AKD & NPP previously enjoyed is no more.
.
AKD has been exposed to be just another hypocrite, another personality full of himself, dishing out rhetoric to gullible, unsuspecting, mostly uneducated, ill informed masses, but does not walk the talk, neither has the integrity it requires to take up a leadership position.
.
It is doubful if he or his NPP could take Sri Lanka to new era of true democracy and meritocracy. For example anyone who tries offer socialism or marxism as a solution and an alternative to caitalism is bound to fail, as there are neither 100% capitalist or 100% socialist economies.
.
What therefore the country needs is a pragmatic leader who could find the right unique economic mix suitable for the country.
.
Investors have been patiently looking at the nonesense that has been going on here and are now running out of their patience.
.
Like everyone else AKD/NPP Combo too has failed us.

The time has it seems come to yake hard decisions. Either to abort and let Sri Lanka sink to the depths of the Indian Ocean or take matters to our own hands and clean up the swamp for good. To get rid of the sexually perverted rapists and criminals that have infested the upper echelons of power, not just in the political landscape but also in professional circes and the corporate world. Sad to say we appear to be a country full of rogues. A country where a few people with intergrity could not be found. Anyone could be bought with a bribe, which often deem to include sexual ones. Full of pervertedmen who want to rape youn virgins and want to make women their sexual slaves. This can not go ad infinitum. It’s time someone puts and end to it and do it fast. We have wasted enough time and there are no more time to waste waiting Sri Lanka to produce the kind of leader who can lead it to prosperity. Time to hire someone who could do it for us.
We already have like I have mentioned earlier couple of candidates lined up.

Two young ladies, with Sri Lankan origins – Second generation Sri Lankans from either side of the Atlantic. Born, bread and educated in Canada and the United Kingdom. Both specialist medical doctors, and come from families of doctors.
.
One even hailing from a past prominent political family in the country. The same family that produced two political stalwarts of the country, Dr. Colvin R. De Silva and C. P. De Silva. She is Dr. Shehani De Silva (MD) currently serving the National Health Service (NHS) of the United Kingdom among other important engagements, and has been critically observing what has been unfolding here in Sri Lanka – how a gang of perverted men has seized the political system with no room or hope for a law abiding citizens to flourish well supported by professionals, the corporate world and members of the public; with the help of the second candidate, working from North America, Dr. Rishmi Jayarathne (MD).
.
They are now ready to take over.

“They ARE NOW READY to TAKE OVER.”
The Main question is ‘ARE THE SRI LANKANS AGREEABLE’ TO SUCH TAKEOVER of this country!!??
After all Sri Lanka is “A COUNTRY”, SOVEREIGN AND INDEPENDENT and NOT a CORPORATE BODY or BUSINESS Establishment – to “TAKEOVER”, because, ”SOMEBODY SHOWS WILLINGNESS” to do so!!??
We Sri Lankans already SIGNED-UP interested Citizens so inclined (39 PAID DEPOSITS), with 1 dead 38 “AWAITING APPRAISAL” by ELECTORS – ‘FINAL ARBITERS’!!?
THEN AGAIN, WHY “A MEDICAL DOCTOR COMBINE, INSTEAD OF AN ECONOMIST – CURRENT ISSUES PLAGUING SL IS ECONOMY, lead to Bankruptcy, Deprivation and Starvation resulting in Deaths too!!?? Let those Learned continued to serve the “Trouble Waters” NHS in UK, Healthcare in Canada – COOLER CLIMES, and with WARM COSY ATMOSPHERE of Western Society!!??

One Dr. Gnana Sankaralingam has commented elsewhere on this site the following: “Whether land bridge will be constructed or not depends solely on India. Tamil people on both side want it and it will be done.”.
.
This I think you have no trouble recognising, is in relation to a proposed land bridge between India & Sri Lanka.
.
Few quick questions to you?
.
Did you see this comment?
.
If you did, how come you didn’t raise the question of sovereignty with him?.
.
If you did not, what do you think?
.
It looks like I’m not the only one that is acting unilaterally.
.
Has there been a referendum amongst Tamil people on both sides that we are unaware of to fimd out about their opinion about such a bridge?
.
I could go on, but let’s start with these few.

I used to look forward to Sarath de Alwis’ perceptive critiques – this is unfortunately not one of those.
Here is my take on the policy manifesto. First, the title ‘A rich country, a beautiful life’ sounds like that of a sci-fi movie. Second, it is monolingual – no Tamil translation available. Third, it is a 233 page long, fanciful wish list. It covers a lot of ground, including necessary policy changes in x number of sectors, but it is also long list of programmes/handouts that will need an infinite amount of resources and at least 20 years to accomplish – perhaps, they plan on staying in power for that long! There is no prioritisation of sectors, programmes or activities, no indication of how they plan to finance these changes or timeframe for implementation. Even if they are presenting this in good faith, they would be running around like headless chickens to implement even 1/20th of what is in this 233-page manifesto. I think they wrote 233 pages as nobody would bother to read it, and they would be off the hook as nobody would remember what is in it to hold them accountable.

Mani,
There was another guy who had a lot of “professionals” advising him. He too made a lot of slick promises. Unfortunately, his name was Gotabhaya.

Old codger,
Yes, people in this country have the shortest memory imaginable. One would have thought, once bitten, twice shy! It seems a large part of the electorate has not outgrown their childhood belief in fairy tales.

Unfortunately, SO, it happened unbelievably in this Lovely, serene Sri Lanka!!??
The GLOW of the PATH TO VISTAS OF PROSPERITY AND SPLENDOUR WAS HIGHLY INTENSE, those Leaders and Those following the Great Leaders, NEVER REALISED THAT THEY ENTERED THE “GATES OF DEPRIVATION, STARVATION, followed DEATH AND DESPAIR”!!!??? The SCENARIO WAS ‘SWELL’, until 03/2022, they – Leaders and those who were being led SAW, the DEVIL INCARNATE at the GATES – in this case Janadhipathi Mandhiraya, and started “RUNNING HELTER-SKELTER”, as if ‘possessed’ by evil spirit, seeking Navy Boats, Aircraft and Sanctuary at OLD Trincomalee FORT FREDRICK!!?? Nay, not Hotels, Navy HQ as Security of those, WHO ASSURED TO THE VICTIMS, SECURITY TO SL PUBLIC, POST 2019 EASTER SUNDAY BOMBINGS – “if Elected, and so were they elected to OFFICE on such GAUDY Assurances”!!??

Thanks, Sarath, for pointing out the importance of this memorandum. Like you, I, too, listened on YouTube:
.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Kat9E9qvxc
.
Good news for those who can’t understand Sinhala; quite a bit in English and Tamil (which I can’t understand!) Anura speaks entirely in Sinhala. Why don’t others also listen to this, and make up your minds?
.
Incidentally, at this time, I find that I cannot access either the NPP or the JVP websites:
.
https://www.npp.lk
.
and
.
https://www.jvpsrilanka.com/english/
.
CORRECTION: I did get through to the JVP website just now.
.
I guess that lots of Lankans are accessing the Internet.
.
The tension is getting unbearable!

NPP manifesto highlights the importance of finding a solution to the problems by completing the all party process made during the 2015-19 and to includes it in the new constitution. I appreciate their courage to bring those measures to the nation which is a necessity towards bringing unity among people.

In Sri Lanka, we are not going to get a “CHANGED SOCIETY” , as soon as AKD takes the reins. For good habits to take root will take time and has to start with young ones in schools and universities and vocational training centres. The Society has been so corrupted by the Politicians it needs a SHOCK THERAPY /electro convulsive therapy. The various Professional bodies have “UNFIT” & corrupt ones that has helped the crooked politicians to have it their way…. Judges/doctors/ media personnel/ Security forces /business people.
Even the clergy is culpable. Wishing AKD to start his project ASAP.

I understand that NPP is the first one who published its manifesto and this is the first time a Sinhalese political leader/Party publicly published what they will do when they come to power.

”‘Pohosath Ratak Lassana Jeevitayak”
Now where did I hear something similar before? I believe there was something about ‘soubhagyamath’ life style or something similar but it never happened. So, this time round, I would like to know how they intend to achieve it, realistically, not ‘pie in the sky’ promises.

Hello Raj all others that are left to be upset by NPP,
–
There are thousand and one issues about NPP but they are not taken care of.. People’s troubles are not cared about…
–
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBKmJZzLqBs
–
“PULUWAN by RW led groups – Yes We Can” is more polarizing than the 250 or so pages that AKDISM has filled with theoretical cores. May all gods be with the right ones not misleading this battered nation.
–
Only by implementing new mechanisms through Parliament and the judiciary can the wrongdoers and major criminals be punished.
–
Sunil Handunetti (inflated by media, but his knowledge retrict to his JAYAWARDHANAPURA Uni degree) was quested on how to dissolve the parliament and form a caretaker government – he, became standstill for few minutes…. and was speechless…… Not a single party will accept NPPs and vice versa… how can they join hands with others in such a situation, will people go astray?
–
MONSANTHO gm company – over to you, please help providing our NPP modified human beings to work with…. they cant work with anyone other than NPP supporters……
–
I mean until they call for a general election. His answer was that the secretaries of the ministries are appointed as members of their cabinet? Can you imagine? How irresponsible are these “responses” from the NPP?

There’s a highly useful tip to avoid having a bad partnership in forming a
business . The saying goes ” Never take a partner without money , into your
business . ” I would add my own experience to prove the saying is perfect .
Once , a friend who also happened to be a distant relative of mine proposed
to me that I invest in a dairy farm and he can involve himself to look after it .
He was working at lake house at the time . I only asked him two questions
” What time he leaves his home to work and what time he returns . ” And that
did the job . At least he spent 3 hours every day up and down to his work plus
8 hrs work time . All together 11 hrs a day on his work routine . And he was
planning to look after the Dairy , without leaving his job by becoming a partner !
Only one experience , I have couple of more experiences where millions were
the proposals but without a cent in the pocket . All for others’ money . The lesson ?
Never even look at an Empty Pocket as a Business Partner . Same With Politics .
There are Super Big Mouths With Very Small Heads To Make The Bankrupt
Country A Heaven Just Like That . As Far As Experience Is Concerned , They Are
Just Empty Pockets .
