Archaeology & Crucifixion

There is evidence that the crucifixion of Christ may be the only day on which a Blood moon, noonday darkness & global or multi-tectonic earthquake coincided.

But what about the bloody moon? – Crucifixion April 3rd AD 33

Blood moon is when sometimes in a total lunar eclipse, the earth which comes between sun & moon casts a red shadow on the moon.

The earthquake during crucifixion was global in scope (affecting every tectonic boundary) as Tertullian & Africanus document.

The answer to that question fixes the date of the crucifixion with precision. Beyond reasonable doubt, in fact, because a “blood moon” has a specific meaning. In ancient literature, not only the Bible, it means a lunar eclipse. Why bloody? Because when the moon is in eclipse it is in the Earth’s shadow. It receives no direct light from the sun, but is lit only by the dim light refracted and red-shifted by the Earth’s atmosphere. The moon in eclipse does glow a dull red, as you know if you have seen it.

good-fridayThis matters, because with Kepler’s equations we can determine exactly when historical eclipses occurred. Perhaps it will not surprise you to learn that only one Passover lunar eclipse was visible from Jerusalem while Pilate was in office It occurred on April 3, 33 AD, the Day of the Cross.

That day followed a night of horrors predicted by the prophet Isaiah. In place of sleep for Jesus there were torch-lit hours of interrogation and mockery, spittle in the face and beatings, barbed lashes tearing flesh from his back and thorns pressed into his scalp. Isaiah wrote that the messiah would be beaten until “marred beyond human likeness” And so, Jesus was brutalized during multiple “trials” and retrials before priests Annas and Caiaphas), King Herod and Roman prefect Pontius Pilate. In the end, his fate was decided by a mob. He was marched to Golgotha, the “place of the skull,” and crucified. He would die within six hours.

The gospels tell the chronology. Hammers thudded spikes through Jesus and into the cross at 9 AM. He was raised up. At noon and for three hours the sky was darkened. In the Temple at Jerusalem, only priests were permitted to enter the presence of God—a thick curtain excluded common men. During the crucifixion, this veil was torn apart, top to bottom, as a shattering earthquake split rocks and broke open tombs). In the darkness and tumult of these signs, even the Roman guards regretted their part in the killing. Jesus died at 3 PM. He was removed from the cross before nightfall to preserve the sanctity of the impending Passover. But the signs and wonders did not end. When the moon rose that evening, it was blood red.

Earthquake at Crucifixion

Phlegon was a Greek historian who wrote an extensive chronology around AD 137:

In the fourth year of the 202nd Olympiad (i.e., AD 33) there was ‘the greatest eclipse of the sun’ and that ‘it became night in the sixth hour of the day [i.e., noon] so that stars even appeared in the heavens. There was a great earthquake in Bithynia, and many things were overturned in Nicaea.’

Annular (ring) eclipse. An eclipse could NOT have caused darkness at the crucifixion because they don’t occur during the full moon. Phlegon provides powerful confirmation of the Gospel accounts. He identifies the year and the exact time of day. In addition, he writes of an earthquake accompanying the darkness, which is specifically recorded in Matthew’s Gospel (Matthew 27:51).

Dr Paul Maier, professor of ancient history at Western Michigan University, notes ‘This phenomenon, evidently, was visible in Rome, Athens, and other Mediterranean cities.’ Maier, Paul. Pontius Pilate (Wheaton, Ill.: Tyndale House, 1968), p. 366. Phlegon’s citation is a fragment from Olympiades he Chronika 13, ed. Otto Keller, Rerum Naturalium Scriptores Graeci Minores, 1 (Leipzig Teurber, 1877), p. 101. On the other hand, Africanus writes of the darkness as a global event. Tertullian, the famous second century apologist, also hails the darkness as a ‘cosmic’ or ‘world event’. Appealing to skeptics, he wrote:

At the moment of Christ’s death, the light departed from the sun, and the land was darkened at noonday, which wonder is related in your own annals, and is preserved in your archives to this day.

Apparently, Tertullian could state with confidence that documentation of the darkness could be found in legitimate historical archives.

Death & Resurrection

Famed British Archeologist Captain Lew Wallace who wrote Ben Hur came to faith by the historical veracity of Luke’s Gospel. In his excavations he found Luke’s details were always accurate. In Jerusalem to this day there is a rock face by the gate nearest to the preserved Gabbatha – seat of governance of Pilate, the Roman Governor in 30 AD. Rock looks like a skull about the height of a coconut tree. This probably was Golgotha (Place of Skull) where Christ was crucified. Calvary = Latin Calvarium = Skull. Rock has two small caves & big one in an inverted triangular formation looking like eyes & mouth. Adjacent is an archaeologically restored & confirmed first century vineyard where olives & vine grew and there is also a rich man’s tomb & rock to roll to shut the grave. In all probability this was where the Body of Jesus was laid prior to resurrection.

Here is something you can test. Some think Christ did not die – he only fainted. What happens when someone is crucified? He can breathe in (inhale) but can’t breathe out (exhale). Air is trapped in the lungs & pressure increases in pleural cavity & lungs. Lung artery pressure & Right heart pressure which is 25/10 mmHg go up to levels of Left side pressure. Right ventricle is thin & begins to fail. Fluid leaks & fills pleural cavity & pericardial sac. Heart is tight & fails. Cardiac Tamponade. Roman Govt. checks death of victim by piercing heart with spear. In Christ case blood clots & fluid came out when his heart was pierced. Death was confirmed. A victim is nailed thru the wrist between ulna & radius bones. Pilate asked if Jesus had died that fast. Mark 15:44, John 19:33,34. The centurion confirmed His death. That was a part of the medico-legal Roman exercise to confirm death before burial. Theorising that Jesus of Nazareth did not die is contrary to proof.

Resurrection marks the victory of justice over evil. Cross was a marriage between Truth & Mercy where righteousness was groomsman & Peace was the chief bridesmaid.

Forgive me for asking, but why did Almighty God made everyone to go through all this drama, when He could have made all human beings to be perfect and to make them live in peace?

Why are people continuing, in this day and age, of these stories of “enmity between God and Man”, “Sacrifice of Jesus to atone for sins of man” etc, which were made up in the past for social and political purposes?

The Guy is a chronic prankster, being alone up there wicked ideas cross His utterly bored mind.
He goes and tells different stories to different people about Himself and about how the universe came into being.
In the process He forgot to reveal himself to the Buddha, the Jain Thirthankars, Confucius and their likes.
By the time he realized his folly it was too late, and humanity destroys itself in His name (and in other names as well).

I think that it was Mark Twain who once said something like “If God knew better, He would have told Adam and Eve not to eat the serpent. Had he done that, Satan would have been done for forever.”

One of my feminist friends insists that God is a woman.
I totally disagree: if God is a woman, we will have a better world today.

        SJ,

There is atheist friend of mine in the US. He went there many years ago, but couldn’t find a job that paid a decent wage. Being a smart and enterprising guy, he thought the best business is to become a preacher, an evangelical Christian preacher, and make a life out of it in the Bible Belt. And that’s what he did.

Oh! You should hear him address the believers! Tears of sorrow pour out of the believers as my friend describes the suffering of Jesus on the cross and tears of joy when he describes the love of God towards the believers. He would quote the Bible back to front and explain everything with reference to the Bible. If need be, he once told me, that he would claim the earth is flat according to the Bible!

And every so often he utters Hallelujah! And immediately after, under his breath, mutters, “Mee-harakung” (Buffaloes). He can’t help himself.

I asked him why he insults the “believers” who pay his upkeep, and quite handsomely as well. My friend says he has to say “mee-haraka” to the believers just so that he can keep his sanity! How he laughs, in private company, at the stupidity of his “flock”!

I wonder how many others are in that same class of preachers!

There was a wonderful Good Friday service yesterday in the Mirihana Anglican Church. There was pin drop silence from 9.00 a.m. until noon while we lived through the Agony of Jesus.

I told a friend who had spent the same three hours in the Cathedral in Buller’s Road that I had never been to a better service. He said, yes, Rev. Christopher Balraj is a wonderful priest; but a week earlier he had seen this:

          https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/belief-in-the-worth-of-teachers-at-s-thomas-colleges/

I read it on my friend’s computer. I was horrified, shell-shocked. Driving back home it kept working in my mind; read it at home, and a few of the links given in comments there. It troubled me in the night.

Now this morning I realised that this illustrates the point about fallen humanity. However dedicated we may be, we will all fall in to error. We have to pick ourselves up and get back to repenting our sins – all of us, even the priests of God. And despite the shocking revelations, I’m sure the preacher whom we all listened to is a good priest – but how difficult to LIVE according to the precepts outlined in any holy scriptures!

But the question remains: who is going to educate the next generations? How do we persuade young people to become preachers and teachers if we don’t respect them?

        Ken
There was a brilliant satirical movie 20+ years ago about an evangelist, an absolute con man, who travels with his team performing miracles in every place he visits. It was a great expose of what charismatic preachers are up to.
The movie had a beautiful twist at the end. The preacher visits a drought stricken town where people want him to perform a miracle, namely bring rain. He knew well that he couldn’t. He reflects on his life as a charlatan and decides to quit. Just as he tries to sneak out, the skies open to the joy of the crowds.
One could say, ‘God works in mysterious ways’.

I cannot remember the title of the movie or who played the protagonist.

Very interesting hypothesis, even using Kepler’e Laws. The Church banned the Heliocentric model of Copernicus, and its support by Galileo, and of Course by Kepler.

What was the basis? The Bible. Joshua Stopping the Sun for 24 hours.

      Joshua 10:13 King James Bible

“And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.”

Amarasiri is very curious as to how Joshua accomplished this from Earth? Did he ask Almighty God, to stop the Sun from going around the Earth and stay Still?

      You say:

Enmity between God & man is finished
      Alienation form is God finished
      Sacrifices finished
      Penalty for sin is finished
      Tit for tat is finished
Now we learn to forgive as He forgave.

So, your evidence is Lunar eclipses? And what was written in the New Testament 50 years later? This just does not cut it, and falls short. Why? See below.

We should not be harsh on Ken Dharmapala for he is ‘only asking’.

There are many like Ken who are ‘only asking’ or ‘searching’ for some explanation to the cosmic madness around us. We are all, at some time at least, seekers for the ‘truth’, for ‘answers’, for a ‘sign’.

One thing I know is that we each have an allotted time on the planet. Let us use it gainfully in the pursuit of happiness, I say. AND, IF you can help somebody as you pass along, your living shall not be in vain.

      As the divine Iris said
“Everybody’s wonderin’ what and where they all came from.
Everybody’s worryin’ ’bout where they’re gonna go when the whole thing’s done.
But no one knows for certain and so it’s all the same to me.
I think I’ll just let the mystery be.”

      Wise words indeed.

“The most formidable weapon against errors of every kind is Reason. I have never used any other, and I trust I never shall.”

Paine’s original work was published in two parts in 1794 and 1795, titled Part First and Part II, and it sold very well in America. Part III was completed in the late 1790’s, but Thomas Jefferson convinced Paine not to publish it in 1802, aware of the possible reprisals. Five years later Paine decided to publish despite the backlash he knew would ensue. It did not sell well.

Saudi Arabian cleric Sheikh Bandar al-Khaibari has claimed that the Earth is stationary and the sun rotates around it in a speech he gave to students at a university in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday. The claims have since been mocked by Twitter users and Cambridge University scientists alike. We take a look at video of the Muslim cleric’s attempt to debunk the rotation theory, in this Lip News clip with Elliot Hill and Mark Sovel.

1 In 4 Americans Thinks The Sun Goes Around The Earth, Survey Says

A quarter of Americans surveyed could not correctly answer that the Earth revolves around the sun and not the other way around, according to a report out Friday from the National Science Foundation.

The survey of 2,200 people in the United States was conducted by the NSF in 2012 and released on Friday at an annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Chicago.

To the question “Does the Earth go around the Sun, or does the Sun go around the Earth,” 26 percent of those surveyed answered incorrectly.

In the same survey, just 39 percent answered correctly (true) that “The universe began with a huge explosion” and only 48 percent said “Human beings, as we know them today, developed from earlier species of animals.”

Just over half understood that antibiotics are not effective against viruses.

As alarming as some of those deficits in science knowledge might appear, Americans fared better on several of the questions than similar, but older surveys of their Chinese and European counterparts.

Only 66 percent of people in a 2005 European Union poll answered the basic astronomy question correctly. However, both China and the EU fared significantly better (66 percent and 70 percent, respectively) on the question about human evolution.

In a survey compiled by the National Opinion Research Center from various sources, Americans seemed to generally support science research and expressed the greatest interest in new medical discoveries and local school issues related to science. They were least interested in space exploration, agricultural developments and international and foreign policy issues related to science.

1500 Year Old Bible Confirms That Jesus Christ Was Not Crucified – Vatican in Awe

      http://hot6today.com/2015/11/27/1500-year-old-bible-confirms-that-jesus-christ-was-not-crucified-vatican-in-awe/

Much to the dismay of the Vatican, an approx. 1500-2000 year old bible was found in Turkey, in the Ethnography Museum of Ankara.

Discovered and kept secret in the year 2000, the book contains the Gospel of Barnabas – a disciple of Christ – which shows that Jesus was not crucified, nor was he the son of God, but a Prophet. The book also calls Apostle Paul “The Impostor”. The book also claims that Jesus ascended to heaven alive, and that Judas Iscariot was crucified in his place.

A report by The National Turk says that the Bible was seized from a gang of smugglers in a Mediterranean-area operation. The report states the gang was charged with smuggling antiquities, illegal excavations, and the possession of explosives. The books itself is valued as high as 40 Million Turkish Liras (approx. 28 mil. Dollars). Man, where is the Thieves Guild, when you need them?

      Authenticity

According to reports, experts and religious authorities in Tehram insist that the book is original. The book itself is written with gold lettering, onto loosely-tied leather in Aramaic, the language of Jesus Christ. The text maintains a vision similar to Islam, contradicting the New Testament’s teachings of Christianity. Jesus also foresees the coming of the Prophet Muhammad, who would found Islam 700 years later.

It is believed that, during the Council of Nicea, the Catholic Church hand-picked the gospels that form the Bible as we know it today; omitting the Gospel of Barnabas (among many others) in favor of the four canonical gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Many biblical texts have begun to surface over time, including those of the Dead Sea and Gnostic Gospels; but this book especially, seems to worry the Vatican.

      The Catholic Church wants in

What does this mean to Christian-derived religions and their followers? Quite a tight spot. The Vatican has asked Turkish authorities to let them examine the contents of the book within the Church. Now that the book has been found, will they come to accept the it and its evidence? Will they deny it altogether? Call it a “Muslim lie”, as did the “Truth” Magazine, in 2000?

To many, this book is a beacon of hope, that believers soon realize that the object of their adoration is arbitrary; and that all text, especially religious text, is subject to interpretation.

What does this mean to atheists/agnostics/secular thinkers? Is the text real? Fake? Does it matter? Hopefully, this news inspires the religious to ask questions, instead of pointing fingers or believing anything blindly.

Please, don’t go poking fun or tossing around the “I told you so!”s. The biggest danger of faith is when people believe what they want to believe, defending against any and all evidence; especially when that evidence revolutionizes their foundation from the ground up. And the biggest culprit to that danger is the ego trap: rejecting/criticizing others, for being unlike you.

For centuries, the “defense” of blind faith has driven nations to war, violence, discrimination, slavery and to become the society of automatons that we are today; and for just as long, it has been justified with lies. If you know better, act like it.

“… when He (God) could have made all human beings to be perfect and to make them live in peace”

If we were all perfect all the time then we would be but the next-generation robots. Free will is the best gift to a creature and a sign of our being co-heirs in the kingdom of God with Christ. Free will gives man the dignity to choose how he wishes to live and think. This liberty of spirit could be chosen by living in perfect love like Jesus or the free will exercised totally to our advantage in temporal matters. But death is sure.

Such is the great love of God that even when we were yet sinners he sent his only son to die bearing the injustices and punishment of our sins.

Brother,I pray you will experience this love one day. Just be open and not have pre-convictions against God’s wisdom till you experience Him. The thinking power of man cannot experience God because God is above thought. All experiential knowledge of God is infused by Him.

George Carlin — Religion is Bullshit

      Uploaded on Apr 23, 2009
George Carlin the Mark Twain prize winner for services to comedy gives a unique insight into religion and God in this thrilling piece.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8r-e2NDSTuE

There is a God that lives inside everyone. Its called your brain. The brain creates the world and everything we see, hear and feel. This is why religion is so powerful. Religion tricks people into believing that God is external and lives in the clouds but in reality he lives insides us.

Here is another good point. If you are born in Iran then you will be taught to be a Muslim. A Shia Muslims. The Saudi Wahhabis would then like to kill you. Think about it. Your religion and God is based off where you are born and what your dumb parents teach you. Religion is the biggest scam in history and they make billions!

This video by George Carlin has to be easily the best of this genre. He hits the nail on the head with such accuracy with everything that he says. And the proof that those ‘nails’ have been properly targeted into the theists intellectual butt-space is very obvious, from the fact that there are continuous & regular “butt-hurt” comments from the theists. Most of those low intellect comments are of the “Carlin is in hell” or “Carlin is a fool” variety, and almost nothing on trying to counter whatever Carlin said, thus exhibiting the theists bankruptcy at all levels of intellect, logic & discourse. CARLIN WAS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT.

Why are you so bothered Ken by someone else’s belief – with all due respect, no one is forcing you to believe. Just let those who believe do so and you live your life – justifying arguments are man’s way of trying to show off his so called intellect. You can’t grasp God with intellect until and unless you experience Him.

Only in recent history that people are “respecting” others beliefs and myths. However, for most of history, religion was at the base of brutality frequently, especially with Christianity.

      Sahana Sampath:-

No one, even Ken, is bothered with Others’ Beliefs, until They start trying to impose them on People Who have Another Set of Beliefs.

I am talking about the Proselytising Activities of Missionaries, who go from Door to Door trying to Convert People to their Set of Beliefs!

Sahana Sampath, thats what the evangelists say when they run out of reasonable arguments. Until that point they know ALL about God and his plans are are very keen to tell you about them. Its only when they get stuck that they resort to ‘but nobody can know the mind of God’

          Sandy,

“Sin.. because men do not believe in Me” – John.16.9 According to Jesus, unbelief in Him, is Sin “

Thanks. But the Christian Sin is much broader than the above.

Is not believing in Joshua, Joshua 10:13, a Sin as well?

          King James Bible
And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

          Christian views on sin

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_views_on_sin

The doctrine of sin is central to Christianity, since its basic message is about redemption in Jesus Christ. Christian hamartiology describes sin as an act of offence against God by despising his Person and his commandments, and by injuring others. It is an evil human act, which violates the rational nature of man as well as God’s nature and his eternal law. According to the classical definition of St. Augustine of Hippo sin is “a word, deed, or desire in opposition to the eternal law of God.”

Among some scholars, sin is understood mostly as legal infraction or contract violation or violation of Christian ethics, and so salvation tends to be viewed in legal terms, which is similar to Jewish thinking, see Judaism and Christianity#Sin for a comparison.

Other Christian scholars understand sin to be fundamentally relational—a loss of love for God and an elevation of self-love (“concupiscence”, in this sense), as was later propounded by Augustine in his debate with the Pelagians. As with the legal definition of sin, this definition also affects the understanding of Grace and salvation, which are thus viewed in relational terms.

          Old Testament

The first reference to “sin” as a noun is of sin “lying at the door,” waiting to overpower Cain,[Gen 4:7][cf. 1 Pet 5:8] a form of literary theriomorphism. The first use of the verb is God preventing Abimelech from “sinning against me” by touching Abraham’s wife in Genesis 20. Isaiah announced the consequences: a separation between God and man, and unrequited worshipping.[Isaiah 59:2)

          Original sin

According to mainstream Christian theology, at the moment Adam and Eve ate the fruit from the tree—which God had commanded them not to do—both sin and death were born. The years of life were limited. Since Adam represented the human race, he is held responsible, for which reason the Fall of man is referred to as the “sin of Adam”, which is deemed to be inherited from him as a condition of fallen human nature. This doctrine is closely associated with Augustine of Hippo. The extent to which it was held by early Christians is debated.

The concept of Original Sin is said to be cause of Adam and his descendants losing unrestricted access to God: “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.”[Rom 5:12] In Christian theology, the death of Jesus on the cross is the atonement to the sin of Adam. “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.”[1 Cor 15:22] As a result of that act of atonement, all who put their trust in Jesus (and, in some denominations, are baptized) now have unrestricted access to God through him.

          Thomas Aquinas

Aquinas distinguished between sins of omission, and sins of commission

The way Thomas Aquinas viewed sin and vices was radically different from later approaches, especially that of 17th century moral theology. He presented sin and vices as contraries of virtues. He discusses the subject in his Summa Theologica part Ia-IIae (Prima secundae) qq.71-89.

In one of his definitions of sin Thomas quotes Augustine of Hippo’s description of sin as “a thought, words and deed against the Eternal Law.”‘

Now there are two rules of the human will: one is proximate and homogeneous, viz. the human reason; the other is the first rule, viz. the eternal law, which is God’s reason, so to speak (quasi ratio Dei). Accordingly Augustine includes two things in the definition of sin; one, pertaining to the substance of a human act, and which is the matter, so to speak, of sin, when he says, word, deed, or desire; the other, pertaining to the nature of evil, and which is the form, as it were, of sin, when he says, contrary to the eternal law. (STh I-II q.71 a.6)

To recognize the possibilities of sin in man is equal to acknowledge his human nature, his control and mastery of his own actions. Sin is a motion to the goal, it is judged by the object to which it is directed. The field of sin is the same as the field of virtue. There are three major fields:

relationship with God, with oneself and with the neighbour.

Thomas distinguished between mortal and venial sins. Mortal sin is when a person has irreparably destroyed the very principle of his/her order to the goal of life. Venial sin is when he/she has acted in a certain disordered way without destructing that principle:

Consequently it is a mortal sin generically, whether it be contrary to the love of God, e.g. blasphemy, perjury, and the like, or against the love of one’s neighbour, e.g. murder, adultery, and such like: wherefore such sins are mortal by reason of their genus. Sometimes, however, the sinner’s will is directed to a thing containing a certain inordinateness, but which is not contrary to the love of God and one’s neighbour, e.g. an idle word, excessive laughter, and so forth: and such sins are venial by reason of their genus. (STh I-II q.72 a.5)

According to Aquinas the gravity of sin depends also on some disposition of the agent (cf. STh I-II q. 18, aa. 4, 6). Sin, venial by reason of its object, may become mortal. It happens when person fixes his/her ultimate happiness, the last end of his/her life (Lat. finis ultimus) in the object of that venial sin. When venial sin is used as a way to provoke mortal sin it becomes mortal as well, e.g. when someone uses empty conversation or a chat to seduce someone to commit adultery. Also sin, mortal by reason of its object, may become venial because of the agent’s disposition when his/her evil act does not have full moral capacity, i.e. is not deliberated by reason. That may happen for instance when sudden movements of unbelief arise in the mind. (Cf. STh I-II q.72 a.5).

The difference and gravity of sins may be discerned on the grounds of spirit and flesh, even mortal sins may differ in gravity. Carnal sins like lust, adultery or fornication, gluttony and avarice, because the person who commits them is inordinately directed towards material goods that are a serious matter, are mortal sins. They may cause much shame and infamy. But spiritual sins like blaspheming of God or apostasy are, according to Thomas, still greater evil, as they have more of the aversion from God. They are directed against a greater object. The formal, essential element of sin is more at the center in them. (cf. STh I-II q.72 a.2)

According to another formulation of the concept of sin in the Summa, at the heart of sin is “the turning away from the immutable good”, i.e. God, and “inordinate turning to mutable good”, i.e. creatures. (STh I-IIae q.87 a.4) This cannot be understood as if in the concrete sinful deed the sinner commits two separate and independent acts. Both aversio and conversio constitute one single guilty action. At the root of the inordinate turning to the creatures is self-love which expresses itself in disordered desire (cupiditas) and rebellion towards God (superbia).

Speaking about sloth (Lat. acedia) Thomas points out that every deed which “by its very nature is contrary to charity is a mortal sin”. An effect of such deed is the destruction of “spiritual life which is the effect of charity, whereby God dwells in us.” Sin of a mortal character is always committed with the consent of reason: “Because the consummation of sin is in the consent of reason”‘. (cf. STh II-IIae q.35 a.3) Venial and mortal sins can be compared to sickness and death. While venial sin impairs full healthy activity of a person, mortal sin destroys the principle of spiritual life in him/her.

          Catechism

Roman Catholic doctrine distinguishes between personal sin (also sometimes called “actual sin”) and original sin. Personal sins are either mortal or venial.

          Protestant views

Many Protestants of a Calvinist orientation teach that, due to original sin, humanity has lost any and all capacity to move towards reconciliation with God (Romans 3:23;6:23; Ephesians 2:1-3); in fact, this inborn sin turns humans away from God and towards themselves and their own desires (Isaiah 53:6a). Thus, humans may be brought back into a relationship with God only by way of God’s rescuing the sinner from his/her hopeless condition (Galatians 5:17-21; Ephesians 2:4-10) through Jesus’ substitutionary atonement (Romans 5:6-8; Colossians 2:13-15; 1 Timothy 2:5-6). According to traditional Reformed theology and classical Lutheranism, Salvation is sola fide (by faith alone); sola gratia (by grace alone); and is begun and completed by God alone through Jesus (Ephesians 2:8,9). This understanding of original sin (Romans 5:12-19), is most closely associated with Calvinist doctrine (see total depravity) and Lutheranism. Calvinism allows for the relative or nominal “goodness” of humanity through God’s common grace upon both those predestined to salvation and those predestined to damnation, upon the regenerate and the unregenerate. Methodist Arminian theology adapts the concept by stating that humans, entirely sinful and totally depraved, can only “do good” through God’s prevenient grace.

This is in contrast to the Roman Catholic teaching that while sin has tarnished the original goodness of humanity prior to the Fall, it has not entirely extinguished that goodness, or at least the potential for goodness, allowing humans to reach towards God to share in the Redemption which Jesus Christ won for them. Some Protestants and Orthodox Christians hold similar views.

There is dispute about where sin originated. Some who interpret the king of Tyre in Ezekiel 28 as a symbol for Satan believe sin originated when Satan coveted the position that rightfully belongs to God. The origin of individual sins is discussed in James 1:14-15 – “14but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. 15Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.” (NIV)

The Sin business is very long. As a Christian, you mat be sinning, bit as a non-Christian you are not sinning.

Therefore, the Christian Definition of Sin is a moving target.

What about women? Are they exempt in believing in Jesus? Why?
Because they are considered Chattel? So are they exempt from Sin?

If so, women are liberated. They need not be Christian!

When Jesus said ‘.. Because ‘men’ do not believe in Me’, He was referring to all people who reject Him and His Word
            – both men and women.

Re ‘ because they are considered chattel’ – you don’t seem to have read the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ compassion and courtesy to the ‘Woman at the Well’ and the ‘Woman Caught in Adultery’, and others.
I’m puzzled as to how a man of ‘common sense and
reason’such as you, Sir, couldn’t grasp all this without an explanation from an ordinary mortal like me? Just curious.

“When Jesus said ‘.. Because ‘men’ do not believe in Me’, He was referring to all people who reject Him and His Word – both men and women.”

Why did Amarasiri, a man of common sense ans reason, ask the question, if women are included in the Jesus saying as per Gospel,

” Sin.. because men do not believe in Me” – John.16.9 ?

It is the Literal Interpretation of the scriptures by the Fundamentalists, and Amarasiri too interpreted literally. A non-fundamentalist interpretation, would have included women.

If the Gospel says men, if the Christian Fundamentalists interpret it literally and change based on other verses, why cannot another with common sense and reason, interpret it similarly? Are there different standards of interpretation for the fundamentalists?

That is the question. Why are you selective with some of the verses and not the others?

Are you selective with Joshua stopping the Sun? The Catholic Church using the Inquisition, burned people, such as Giardano Bruno for claiming that the Earth went around the Sun.

Now, from where did Abdul Wahhab get the Authority to re-brand Muslims as non-Muslims, Apostate and Kuffar and Kill them?

Amarasiri has so far failed to find such Authority in the Quran.

The Authority was given by the Saudis to the Wahhabies. or is it the other way around?

Have you two heard about deep profound ignorance?

Richard Dawkins: if I meet god when I die.

          Published on Sep 15, 2012

Evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins on his experience with Darwinism and why creationists “don’t know anything.”

          TRANSCRIPTION:

I think we should look at the history of religion, be fascinated by it, just if you look at the history of art and so on. But I don’t think that religion has anything useful to teach us.

One of the main reasons why people are religious is because they are persuaded by the apparent design of living things and that’s completely destroyed by Darwin. If you actually read any book by a biologist about evolution, it’s hard to see how you could fail to be persuaded of it, the evidence is just absolutely pact. There is no doubt about it. It’s not a controversial issue. History is completely certain. It’s as certain as the fact that the earth and the other planets, orbit the sun.
More than 40% of the American population, if opinion polls to be believed, think that the world is less than 10,000 years old and that’s a shocking figure. It shows deep profound ignorance. It sounds very laudable to teach the controversy, to teach both theories. But there aren’t two theories, there is only one theory around, there is only one game in town as far as theory of science is concerned. Of course you get negative reactions from creationists, but who cares about creationists, they don’t know anything.

I think it was my father who first introduced me to Darwin and Evolution. I was immensely moved by it and it did start a rollercoaster in a way and then I started to become really quite antireligious after that. I went through a sort of middle ground of what you might call Deism. I think I gave up Christianity before I finally gave up the idea of a sort of creative designer of some kind.

Darwin made it possible to be an intellectually fulfilled atheist. Before that you could be an atheist, he was for example, but it was quite difficult because you had no good explanation for why living things look so well designed, Darwin provided that.

There are other reasons for being religious like moral reasons or people sometimes feel they have a personal relationship with God or with Jesus or with Mohammed or whatever it is and that kind of reason for being religious would not in itself be undermined by Darwinism, but it’s quite wrong to believe that science reduces humanity, that science somehow gives you a bleak, cold, empty, barren view of the universe and of life, quite the contrary, sounds as enriching and fulfilling.

What’s going to happen when I die, if I met god in the unlikely event after I died, I think the first thing I would say is well, which one are you? Are you Zeus? Are you Thor? Are you Baal? Are you Mithras? Are you Yahweh? Which god are you? And why did you take such great pains to conceal yourself and to hide away from us?

Yes Amarasiri every time I read your contributions in the many threads you subscribe to, you remind me how anyone, who has access to a computer and the tools to cut and paste, can display such monumental ignorance as you have done. I make my judgement only with reference to your contributions on Wahabism in particular and Islam in general. Your posing as an expert on Islam, quoting and interpreting the Quran as someone from within, is laughable to say the least! Please tag yourself “I am not a Muslim” when you quote and interpret the Quran lest some reader mistake you for an Iblees ridden Wahabi Sheik!

“If Jesus was God and if he was killed, who ran the world for 03 days and 03 nights when he was buried? Just curious”

I guess, using common sense and Christian Theology of Trinity, The Father, The Son and the The Holy Ghost, when the Son was out of commission for 3 days, the world was run by The Father and The Holy Ghost.

There was no Trinity for 3 days. It was only Binity and Binitarianism.

When Jesus was crucified, there was an earthquake and was dark. How do you know it was Jesus and not someone else?

Crucifixion is meant to be a slow death. How come Jesus was on the cross for a few hours before he was pronouced “dead.”?

Why he was dressed up like a farmer and in hiding after he was buried in a spacious “tomb” after 03 days?

Who moved the stone to open up the spacious tomb.

If Jesus was dead, he would be a spirit. If he was a spirit, why didn’t he scare the hell out of Jews and the Romans. Instead, he was dressed up like a gardner and never preached again.

Did Jesus really die on the cross?

Dr. Lalith Mendis-Your Narrative and RE: Goraka Comment

Mendis: “There is evidence that the crucifixion of Christ may be the only day on which a Blood moon, noonday darkness & global or multi-tectonic earthquake coincided.”

Goraka: “When Jesus was crucified, there was an earthquake and was dark. How do you know it was Jesus and not someone else?”

Using Reason to arrive at the Truth. What Actually happened? Did Joshua stop the Sun from setting?

The Bible does not explicitly state on which day of the week Jesus was crucified. The two most widely held views are Friday and Wednesday. Some, however, using a synthesis of both the Friday and Wednesday arguments, argue for Thursday as the day.

So, let us ASSUME it was on “But what about the bloody moon? – Crucifixion April 3rd AD 33”.

      1. YES. There was a Partial Lunar Eclipse, on April 3, 0033 C.E. as per NASA Calculations, visible from Palestine.

      1. Earthquake? Where?

      2. It was Dark? When? Which Year? When were the Gospels Written?

So, there COULD NOT HAVE BEEN A TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE DURING THE CRUCIFIXION OF JESUS IN THE YEAR 33 C.E.

Looks like the Gospel Writers, Mark, Luke and Mathew have written events from hearsay, and the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans may have catalyzed the writing of the Gospels.

The crucifixion of Jesus occurred, if there was a Jesus, in 1st century Palestine, most probably between the years 30 and 33. Jesus, whom Christians believe to be the Son of God as well as the Messiah (Christ), was arrested, tried, and sentenced by Pontius Pilate to be scourged, and finally crucified by the Romans as per the Gospels.

It is clear that the Gospels were not written prior to the time of the events (approximately 27-33 AD). If authored by the traditional authors, each Gospel must have been completed within their lifetime (no later than 100 AD). In addition, these works were already being cited in other works (such as 1 Clement) before the end of the first century, clearly proving their existence prior to the end of the first century.

Although some scholars disagree, the vast majority of researchers believe that Mark was the first Gospel to be written, sometime around the year 70. This scholarly consensus holds that the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Luke were composed, independently of one another, sometime in the 80s or 90s.

    Dr. Lalith Mendis,

That was fantastic insight into natures’ signs and omens towards deliverance of earthlings from the horrors of existence.

What unfortunate existence are poor humans, who through ultra-craving, conglomerated their aggregates and created themselves.

What sacrifice of the Son of Man to get tortured and killed thus, in an attempt to remove the super-conglomeration of mankind.

Whether looking at the cross, can one disperse aggregates….now that is prone to dispute. Maybe there is some ancient magic in the universe after all.

But there are better and more rational ways: meditate, become aware of the self, chant the Dhamma, and disperse aggregates through successive rebirths.

This Doctor says: “Famed British Archaeologist Captain Lew Wallace who wrote Ben Hur came to faith by the historical veracity of Lukes Gospel”! How many lies are there in this one sentence? Lew Wallace who wrote Ben Hur was not a Britisher. He was American. Not a famed archaeologist. He was a lawyer and Politician. Not a captain. He was a Union General in the American Cinil war. And as to the historical verasity of Luke`s gospel I advice you to compare it with Matthew and note how many contradictions you`ll find!

Don’t get mad at Lalith. He’s brainwashed and unable to think logically and rationally. He’s in an evangelical cult like Eran. At least Eran is clever now because he’s a politician so he won’t reveal to us how narrow minded and close circled they are. They believe all sorts of fairy tales. Have you noticed their desire to proselytize and declare how “great ” their faith is?

No need to get mad. Everyone is entitled to delusions and beliefs. They are very afraid to mingle with non evangelicals after they get indoctrinated to propaganda. They cannot accept scientific facts and data and you cannot convince them otherwise.

Live and let live. May Christianity be good for Christians, may Islam be good for Muslims. may Buddhist philosohpy be good for real Buddhists, and may Hinduism, Sikhism, Zorastrianism, animism, sun worship or whichever system of faith we want to adopt be good for those of that particular faith. No need to say “my god is bigger than yours, my god is greater than yours” etc. Faith requires a step beyond rationalism and beyond acceptance of real evidence and facts. That is why it is called faith.

Failure of adherents of all these so calls theistic(monotheistic faiths like Islam and Christanity and Judaism), Polytheistic faiths like Hinduism or non-theistic faiths like Buddhism is quite evident. Everyone wants to browbeat others. It has failed. Live and let live and follow principles of those teachings. They do not encourage people to kill or convert or force people to change faiths etc. It is a fundamental failure of adherents and not in fact teachings of the founders of those faiths it appears. I maybe wrong. I do not worship any deity so who knows? Someone might say I will end in “hell” where I might have great company.. Better story for Sri Lankans is as follows.

A man dies and goes to “Hell” for some bad stuff he did but the “Devil”(a work of fiction IMHO) takes him around to show different hell holes. He takes him to the American pit. There is barbed wire and armed guards shooting down at people trying to get out and a ring of raging fire. The people are helping each other and pulling people up or pushing people up to escape. The man says that is harsh and goes to the next one. Chinese Hell. Same story. People trying to escape and guards(perhaps American troops or ISIS troops) are shooting down and people trying to lift others and push others up and pull people up to escape. Guards keep shooting them down. He says that is cruel and goes to the next one; Russian one. same story. He goes to the Korean one; same story, Japanese and Canadian same story; even the Mexican hell is the same. Then the “Devil”(Again a work of fiction) takes him to a hell pit. It is calm, no guards, no barbed wire, no ring of fire.. “hmm” he says “that looks very peaceful whose hell is this Oh Satan?, I will like to go there” Satan smiles and says “why not take a look son?” He looks in and to see people again are trying to escape the pit up the ladders and when they are trying to escape, people below them are pulling them down and dragging them down and throwing them down into a raging fire below . Satan says “no need for guards THAT IS THE SINHALA HELL”.

Peace be with you all. May all Christians have a wonderful Easter. If you take an academic look at the life of Jesus Christ, you know he did not hate anyone. He did not condemn blacks, Jews or gays or lesbians or poor or sick. His actions showed that he raged against greed when he raided the temple of Pharisees and throw out the Cattle buyers, money changers and dove sellers. He was a heck of a cool dude and a revolutionary for his time and age. The Romans found him a political threat; tortured him and executed him. His life has since been mystified and I respect those who want to believe that. May real Christians emulate his actions and may Buddhist adhere to buddha’s teachings and not engage in absurd practices that have no place in Buddhism. Coconut smashing, blackmagic, talismans, hooniyangs, are all backward primitive non buddhist things.

May all beings be free from hateful anger but may all beings also be able to discuss honestly and openly faith or race or whatever without resorting to violence and beheading people or forcing people to convert violently or via subterfuge.

In an interesting article summarizing Orof.Gananath Obeysekera’s work on sorcery (Huniyang) in Sri Lanka the fact that Budhists and Hindus resort to it, although Buddhists do so in larger numbers. They visit specific Viharas, a Hindu temple and even a mosque for this purpose. The intent to murder and hurt is apparently far more prevalent than the actual cases of murder and assault! Faith can manifest in many forms, including belief in sorcery. Fear also Frequently drives faith.

    Tit for tat is finished
Now we learn to forgive as He forgave

In Sri lanka, they try to equal Jesus to Buddha. In India, they try to equal Jesus to God Krishna. both in Sri lanka and in Phillipines, they crucify youngsters and try to justify the roman Kingdom punishment’s for traitors. They try to sanctify the roman Kingdom’s punishment as part of a religion.

The issue, people can not be fooled for ever.

In the west, Jesus is considered one who had a prostitute as a mistress, one who was eating poisonous mushrooms to get high and was a Carpenter. He was just heading an under ground movement against the roman Kingdom. that is by 1700, Christianity, becoming extinct in Europe.

Jesus was baptized by some other person. why god’s son or the messenger had to be baptized by a human ?

Jesus is claimed to be son of God.

He is also claimed to be God Himself.

He is the only God (other than other mythologies), who was born and died and his Father God made him suffer and die so we humans can be forgiven for our sins.

But, Jesus is claimed to be the only God (three is one, one is three)and when he died the world ran without him.

Belief is accepting something without questions. Religions are one such discipline. Religions are like road signs if one wishes to follow, then follow. The moment one question the belief, he does not remain a believer.

The good part of believing is, one is minus the headache of knowing the answers. However, those wish to question are free to roam their minds with various questions with all head aches until one is satisfied.

We cannot fault any religions on the basis of their statements. We should be grateful to those who found these religions. The facts of life will teach that we are not the masters of anything. Our bodies are just robots. The genes and astro positions are managing our thoughts and actions. At the end our bodies achieve nothing other than our genes finding its way to the next generation. We will never find god anywhere. We have to accept the design as our god if you need one. Still the god cannot do anything special for anyone. But belief can. It has physiological and psychological benefits. Religious warfare is due to poor understanding of religion. Someone will benefit from the contents of Dr. Mendis’s article. It is unnecessary to pass disparaging remarks to anyone when the misunderstanding lies within.

Even Now people goes to long term comas, months long or some times, years long, because of high hemorrhage.

So, if Jesus was crucified he did not die. He went through a coma for a few days, and once became conscious with the help of supporters he ran away to Kashmir where he died.

    That is very possible.

This Kashmir story was started by Nicolas Notovitch [see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolas_Notovitch%5D

(1858-after 1916) about a hundred years ago. Before that no such false story regarding Jesus in India ever existed. The Church Fathers everywhere and especially those overseeing India wrote clear accounts of the Christian activities in each land.No theology of India matches Christ, even in spiritual direction or principle.

Sadly, though there IS evidence of St. Thomas in India and full records in the Church, no one wants to believe that.

Such bias is not in keeping with intellectual tradition. It is propagating mischief!

The Partial Lunar Eclipse of 3rd April 33 CE would not have been seen as red. As seen from Jerusalem it was just 20% covered by Umbra at Moonrise and Umbra stage ended soon after. See Map in

    http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/LEhistory/LEplot/LE0033Apr03P.pdf
The U4 arc is just west of Israel and west of that line no Umbra coverage is visible.
Penumbra just darkens Moon and hardly noticeable.

You need a Total Eclipse Moon to see it as Red from Earth illumination.

The Moon @ Moonrise could be seen as Red because of Dust in Atmosphere, but that is unrelated to an eclipse.
