Uduwe Dhammaloka’s Gymnastics

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

Shyamon Jayasinghe

Revd. Uduwe Dhammaloka epitomises something ghastly and frightening about the future of the Sangha, namely that this great and noble institution of Sri Lankan Theravada Buddhists is, surely, cracking from within. We had, once, nationalists crying from treetops that Christian and other Western forces were subverting the Sangha. I tell them that we need not look outside. The decay is internally generated.

Revd Uduwe Dhammaloka had a big and venerating following. It is not a case of Gnasasara. Revd Uduwe Dhammaloka was indisputably an authentic monk of longstanding held in high regard. Questions were raised hush hush that he was getting too concerned about grooming himself-applying face cream and doing facials and all such glittery things. Such personal idiosyncrasies typically lead to a multitude of canards and gossip. The monk was demanding a prestigious car to go for bana, they said and the fact is he did always travel in luxury cars. It was a mandatory requirement that he should be provided with a special mike that commutes his voice into something ethereal and divinely soft. It was also rumoured that the car he travels in had special electrical light effects that represented the Buddha’s halo or budu res.

The provocation for this article, however, were not any of those charges about the once holy monk but his recent strange performance in suddenly charging that the late Revd Maduluwave Sobitha did not really die of natural causes and that he was murdered!

Uduwe 08.05.09Hey! This is news to all of us. It was no secret that Revd Sobitha was advanced in age and that he had been battling with an acute onset of diabetes and its chronic associated ailments. The government had, with the monk’s consent, despatched him to Singapore for special treatment. And now, after months of the passing away of Revd Sobitha we have our handsome and smiling Revd Uduwe giving us a different narrative: Revd Maduluwave Sobitha -the prime mover for change of the Rajapaksa regime and the installation of a yahapalana government- had been, according to the new narrative, disappointed about the course taken by the YP government of Maitripala Sirisena and Wickremesinghe. The YP government, therefore, in true Rajapaksa style, engineered Revd Sobitha’s death. We are relieved that Revd Uduwe did not say he saw Ranil or Sirisena taking a cup of poison to give the ailing venerable monk. The latter’s death had been crafted in subtlety!

It surprises one how Revd Uduwe Dhammaloka didn’t bother one bit about the hopeless timing of his accusation. The timing was so bad that the motive of the charge is made self-evident. The Revd accusing monk had just been arrested on charges relating to keeping a baby elephant in his temple at Allen Methiniyarama. He was later bailed out.

This monk has long been observed as a clever self-marketer. We have referred above to his funny idiosyncrasies. They aren’t mere extraordinary habits. They can be viewed as being marketing devices employed to impress and to create a glow about him. Here, again, when he was arrested and taken in the police van he recited gaathaas and vowed not to react in retaliation. He wore a perfect appearance of metta or loving kindness to one’s enemy. As though the compassionate Buddha was taken in the police van!

We are deterred from commenting on the charges relating to the court case.

However, as a frequent visitor to Allen Methiniyarama Avenue I remember residents relating to me how Revd Uduwe Dhammaloka virtually took over the old temple gifted long ago by a White lady called Allen to the then residing monk for having cured an eye disease that had afflicted her. It is a multi million dollar patch of forest in the heart of Colombo. Residents told me that Revd Uduwe, who had then the blessings of the former lawless regime, came in a security – flanked four – wheel drive and just rode through the property like Lord Mountbatten. Hey presto the property was his! We know the previous regime was so efficient.

The path that led a once good and authentic monk to where he now is as an accused in a court case is a standard lesson to the whole Sangha. It was his involvement in active politics and in the political power game of lay politicians. Power simply corrupts. To stay in power one has to be liberal about the truth and lie if possible. Politicians world-over are in a deception game. Politicians in Third World countries like our own thrive on mega-deception. Few rise above that and to the level of statesmen. What Buddhism doth one have if one is prone to engage in duping and deception?

Revd Uduwe Dhammaloka’s explanation for the elephant episode is that someone had just dropped off the baby tusker in his temple and that he was,in fact, looking after the helpless, orphaned animal. It is well-known how unwanted cats and puppies are dropped off in temple places by their owners. Wonder who has unwanted baby elephants that can be offloaded like this in temple premises!

The other thing is that Revd Sobitha’s disappointment had been over the Sirisena-Wickremesinghe government’s decision to invite Rajapaksa’s men into cabinet. Revd Sobitha was until death backing the YP government. If Revd Sobitha was,as stated by Revd Uduwe Dhammaloka, assassinated such a dastardly act must have arguably been done by Rajapaksa’s men of whom Revd Uduwe was a crony.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickreamesinghe, while attending a religious ceremony on the 16th of March reportedly made a veiled criticism of Revd Uduwe Dhammaloka. Here’s the report:
“Praising the conduct of Ven. Indrarathana Thera of Hiddelana Sri Maha Viharaya, PM Wickremesinghe said there had been no allegations that the Nayake Thera had sold elephants to other monks. Ven. Indrarathana hadn’t been accused of using state power to take over temples in Colombo, PM Wickremesinghe said, adding that he was not a monk who had obtained money from gem dealers. “He has led an exemplary life as a true Buddhist,” PM Wickremesinghe said, adding that Ven. Indrarathana, the President and others, including him, did not apply cream bought from the UK and France.”

        Well said Shyamon.

Ask any of the neighbors and they will narrate as to how this land was acquired by Uduwe.

He is not answerable to any of the chief priests and is a law to him self.

Hopefully he is gone for good !!!

Shyamon Jayasinghe – is Exposing Sinhala “Buddhism”, because the so-called “Maha Sangha” will not discipline the rogue “Monks” who follow Mara who opposed Buddha.

      Buddharakita, Somarama, Ganasara.. tradition…following Mara..

Sorry, you misunderstood my comment on Mara.

By Mara, Amarasiri meant the Devil, who opposed Buddha Dhamma. Listen to Jaya Mangala Gatha.

You misunderstood it as MARA, MR, or MaRa, the Amarasiri Terminology for Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Wonder if this monk is getting paid from the stolen billion from MR, MaRa? Did MR, MaRa spoil him?

Dil, if some thing is wrong, it must be exposed. Be it from any community. It should never be covered up not even tolerated. We are all human and we always fall short of expectations to stand up to our responsibilities. So it goes for these monks too, although they pretend to be bodhisatvas and keep fooling the people at every turn. This is called monk hegemony. The people are now wiser and smarter and will not hesitate to call it as they see it, specially now with internet age upon us, and everyone competing to grab a fair share of the attention.

Dil, the problem with the Maha Sangha is that they appear to be a totally inactive entity as far as the thugs in robes are concerned.

If they were really concerned about the state of Buddhism in Sri Lanka they should take pains to clean up their stables and educate their followers about the true message of the Buddha (The Four Noble Truths and The Eightfold Path).

This has nothing to do with “minority religions”, so stop trying to find scapegoats to defend your defenseless position.

You don’t need Shyamon to tarnish Buddhism, when Sinhala/Buddhists are doing it well.

Rathugala Vedda Community Leader Suda Wannile Atho,Wife and 11 Year old Nephew Hospitalised After Police Assault Family at their Home

      By Madura Ranwala

Rathugala Vedda community leader, Suda Wannile Attho, his wife and his sister-in-law’s 11-year-old son are being treated at the Bibile hospital after being assaulted allegedly a group of policemen attached to the Ratmalgaha Ella police post of the Inginiyagala police station in the Ampara police division on Wednesday night.A policeman, too, is being treated for injuries he sustained at the hands of a group of Veddas.

Police said the incident had taken place when a team of policemen, acting on a tip-off that some people were gambling at the Vedda leader’s house, raiding the place.

Police spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said that the clash between the police and the Veddas would be probed under the supervision of the Ampara Division (1) Senior Superintendent.

The police personnel attached to the Ratmalgaha Ella police station had been transferred out with immediate effect until the investigations were over, he said.

Vedda leader, Suda, being treated at the Bibile hospital told media that he had been attacked by a team of men in civvies, who arrived at his house on motorcycles around 9.45 p.m. He was assaulted with a chair. “We came to know that they were from the police only when they identified themselves as policemen.”

The Vedda leader said the policemen had attacked them while they were celebrating his granddaughter’s birthday.

“The Vedda leader said the policemen had attacked them while they were celebrating his granddaughter’s birthday.”

So, the Para-Sinhala still continues to attack the Native Veddah Aethho.

First Paras ethnically cleansed the Native Veddah Aethho.

Then the Paras killed the Native Veddah Aethho.

They still continue to harass them using the Para “Police”.

When I see how the religious garb and accoutrements are used by crooks in all religions including Buddhism to exploit and benefit from simple minded laity and political scoundrels , I am reminded of the wisdom in the Thirukural:

    “Mallithalum neetalum verndaam- ivvulahil,
    pallithathu olithuvidin”

(There is no necessity to shave the head or grow a beard, if one avoids what society looks upon with disdain)

I have met Ven. Sobitha Thera twice, the second in August’2015. He was no doubt disappointed with how the Yahapalanaya government was drifting, but was not against it. I suggested that he should be appointed to the Constitution Council and explained why. He listened to me, but did not comment. What I liked about him was that there was no prerence in him. He was a genuine. He did not need any cream to glow and artificial lighting to create a halo. The light from within, lit him and enhanced his majestic personality. He may have made his mistakes in life, but he grew out of them and became what he did. This upward striving is what is required of a monk.

Surprised to hear you praising Sobhitha Thera and also to hear that you suggested that he should be appointed to the Constitution Council. When the opposition parties were looking for a common candidate for the last presidential elections, you were dead against Sobhitha Thera’s candidacy and you always criticized when Sobhitha Thera’s name was proposed. If Sobhitha Thera became the president, the presidency would have been abolished a year ago and none of the present day problems would have been there and we would have had Sobhitha Thera still living.

Sobitha and his erstwhile supporters did not want a repeat of economic on the islanders for non cooperation.
Therefore Sobitha and his stooges hijacked the nomination.

Talk of he/she has changed folk- George Bush was born again Christian that he decided to bomb the people and bring about freedom.

        Daham,

You are right. I am yet against a religion or a religious personality of any label playing an active role in politics.
An advisory or consultative role, in the circumstances prevailing then fitted Ven. Sobitha Thera better and would have been an asset to the new Yahapalanaya government.

When We Lay People, Observe the 8 precepts (Atasil), We Undertake the 7th Precept, (Nachcha Gita Vadita… etc.)which means to Refrain from Dancing, Singing, Music, Watching Entertainment. Also To Refrain from Wearing Jewellery , Perfume and Garlands, and BEAUTIFYING WITH COSMETICS.

Don’t Buddhist Monks have to observe this 7th Precept?

tO answer you the question- sure all that pray are entitled to respect those precepts.. but dont you know all these men behind safron constumes are similar to what we see in Europe – called Drag queens (ones that live up their lives abusing Sanga costumes”.

10 precepts applies to all Theravada Buddhists including the venerable monks. Failure to follow the above proves these so called Buddhism is and had been a Humbug .
There are monks and lay people still follows the Gaathas and Buddhists true to the word.

When the Politicians began to misuse the Religion the Monks too became Greedy and started following the sinners way.
True Buddhists please don’t throw stones at the messengerS but try to find the cure for the TRUE DISEASE,, by punishing the wayward Monks and the Politicians.

The more stones are thrown at the truth finders the behaviour of the so called protectors of the Religion will never be corrected which will lead to the demise .
For the True believers of the Religion it’s time to RISE AGAINST THESE WAYWARD MONKS AND SAFE GUARD THE RELIGION ,NOT THROWING STONES AT THOSE MESSENGERS.

We need a change of mentality not as blind following the blind .
The Buddhists had been like that for centuries. Never ever questioned a monk for their waywardness.

That’s why we see the modern day monks behaviours as such and somewhat disgraceful at times .
Is this Theravada Buddhism??? Greed , intoxication. , use of bad language and behaviours , thieving and sometimes murder…

People are you BLIND OR YOU TOO ARE INTOXICATED BY THE SWEET TALK OF THESE YELLOW ROBED ACTORS.?? You decide.

      That is the Problem.

Sinhala Buddhists have been offering Dane’ to “THESE YELLOW ROBED ACTORS” for so long, that they have come to believe that The Robe is Sacrosanct; Not what is Inside the Robe.

These “THESE YELLOW ROBED ACTORS” keep the Sinhala Buddhists Happy, by organising Lavish Katina Pinkamas, and Vesak Celebrations, which have no Connection to the Buddha’s Dhamma.

It has become so Bad that Good Monks like Ven Sobitha Thero, Who Practise the Buddha’s Path, are being Questioned as to their Authenticity!

Uduwe Dhammaloka is not a virtuous monk.
Those who know about his character will tell numerous stories.

Unfortunately most Sinhalese Buddhists blindly follow the teaching of the Buddha and Sinhalese Buddhist monks.

There are many virtuous monks but these blind people can not appreciate and highlight them.

Now Uduwe Dhammaloka has lost his credibility and reputation by telling lies and keeping unregistered and unauthorized baby elephant in his unregistered so called temple.

Uduwe Dhammaloka must be definitely brought to justice and incarcerated for life.

Gnanasara….Uduwe Dhammaloka….Muruththettuwe Ananda are crooks who are covering their disgraceful and scandalous characters by wearing yellow garbs.

The worst is the monk militancy, which goes way beyond the norm. Removing the caps of police officers and throwing it, challenging the officers, falling on the ground and pretending they were attacked, shame, shame, shame. There are some radio talk shows which expose these monks. The kind of nefarious activities they carry out hiding under the safron robe. Unbelievable to say the least. Hunting for vulnerable women luring them into their dens, producing false certificates for a fee, buying intoxicating medication from pharmacies to resell to students, the list goes on and on. If this is the way Buddhist monks behave, what better can anyone expect from laymen. They don’t want to be disciplined. They want to have a stranglehold on the public by demanding respect for their robes. We will never tolerate such nonsense from our clergy and will admonish them to change their ways, or expel them barring from holding any post.

“Shyamon trying to tarnish Buddhism”? Dil man`s dull comment suggests that he is also one of those “supiri Buddhists” led astray by “supiri monks”. They are going from darkness to darkness. (“thamo thama paraayano”)Shyamon ayya is a Buddhist who is intelligent enough to understand what is good and what is bad.
    “Kaasaawakantha bahavo – paapadhammaa asannathaa
Paapaa paapehi kammehi – nirarayan te upapajjare” – Dhammapada 307 ( Many with a yellow robe on their necks are of evil disposition and uncontrolled. Evil-doers on account of their evil deeds are born in a woeful state.) That is what the Buddha said. Now Mr Dil the “supiri Buddhist, please do not say that the Buddha also tried to tarnish “your Buddhism”!

The greatest service that can be done to PRESERVE and PROTECT the Gauthama Buddha’s Teachings is nothing but to expose these types of PSEUDO members of the the Maha Sangha. If the proper Maha Sangha do not come forward to do that, then at least the laity must take upon themselves the responsibility and clear this menace. One thing we observe is, most of these pseudo priests do possess the “Gift” of the “GAB” whether it be inborn or artificially orchestrated. In addition they also must be able to add a few degree level letters at the beginning of the name viz. PHD,MA, BSc MSc etc. and if that qualification is not acquired by academic studies it must be “bought” from an Institution preferably abroad. That attracts the unsuspecting devotees in huge numbers and that also mostly from the “rich elite” class. Then comes the instinctive attraction of the Politicians who are vultures waiting to grab the “kill” of both the “rich, elite” and the “ordinary, innocent and unsuspecting devotees”. From there onward the “CIRCUS” starts roaming around the country.

This person Uduwe Dhammaloka is no exception to the above category. However that “Gift Of The Gab” has now put him in trouble and BIG TROUBLE. He is already charged in a Court of Law over the illegal possession of a calf elephant, according to him, left abandoned in his “Temple”. Facts are clear as to how he came into possession of that “baby elephant”. The Wild Life Dept. at Battaramulla, to which place this baby elephant was taken first after a “chase” of a lorry conveying it and “WHO” gave “ORDERS” to release it and “WHERE” it must be “delivered” are crystal clear. Incidentally, the Commissioner of Buddhist Affairs, in a report has stated that “residence” of Uduwe Dhammaloka viz. Allen Mathiniyaramaya is NOT registered as a “Temple” or “Aramaya”. Let the Courts handle that matter.

Now he talks of the “MURDER” of Rev. Sobith of Naga Vihare of Kotte. He also claims his association with Rev. Sobith and that temple during the early life of his priesthood. This “SUSPECTED MURDER” of Rev. Sobitha, he declares along with two other “Prominent Priests” (if you like to call them as such) Rev. Muruthetuwe Ananda and Rev.Elle Gunawansa. We already know who they are and what they are capable of.

A CID inquiry has begun into this “Suspected Murder” of Rev. sobitha and statements are due to be recorded from the above priests. I only hope this Uduwe Dhammloka will not say: “The other two priests told me to say so”. He did say so in the case of his “baby elephant” matter and assigned that two politicians who told him to say it was “abandoned at my temple”. Of course, in this case of “Suspected Murder” of Rev. Sobith, he will not able to do that, because, at the news conference, when a journalist asked whether he has any evidence the reply was very clear, viz. “yes I have evidence and I will give at a proper inquiry”. So now the CIRCUS has come to town and let us wait till the gates of Welikada are open for all these “PSEUDO” Buddhist Priests.

It is a fact that allegations of a sophisticated murder was levelled against the hosts of Ven. Gangodawila Soma. Since then if a death of a Buddhist monk took place along with or immediately after a foreign tour then sophisticated murder is surmised as a cause of the death. Leave alone Ven Sobhitha, the talk of the town is even the death of the late Mahanayake thero of the Asgiriya Chapter is ascribed as a suspicious death. Why? The Venerable monk had just returned from Thailand and he passed away the evening of the very day he returned.

The timing and the motive of raising suspicions about the death of Ven. Sobhitha by Ven. Dhammaloka is best known to the latter monk himself. It is also another way of saying that Ven. Dhammaloka is expecting to die under mysterious circumstances. This suspicion that personalities identified as staunch buddhists are made to befall mysterious misfortunes also fans religious discord.

The purpose of my comment is not analyse the pros and the cons of the writer but how these suspicions disunites the people of the country where unity is so important. We simply cannot afford to have anymore ethnic or religious discords which leads to violence and mayhem.

I wonder how Bhikku Uduwe Dhammaloka knows about this conspiracy. Was he by chance one of the elements/ role player in the assassination loop. Did he take the poison chalice to Ven Sobhitha, who would not ever suspect a Buddha=like monk that appears to be full of metta, offering a chalice of poison? Kindly please speak up Bhikku UD! This is certainly a page form a fake Chulla-Haththi Padopama Sutra, me thinks!!!

“both christianity and Islam are political religions.”

          So is Sinhala/Buddhism.

“All over the world, religion and the govt is interconnected.”

All over the world, many countries spend billions in scientific research to connect with rest of the universe. Why aren’t you doing it here in this island?

“GOD and POLITICS DOES NOT MIX.
GOD and POLITICS DOES NOT MIX.
GOD and POLITICS DOES NOT MIX.”

That is why the U. S. Constitution has Separation of Religion, God and State.

“”Please say after me now… GOD and POLITICS DOES NOT MIX. “”

Patriotism is to politics what faith is to religion:
Both are emotions as opposed to a rational thought process.
So in practice they mix like Jiggy wiggy.
      What’s up at Burma??

If we are to preserve our Sangha and Sasana we must be critical of wayward monks and frauds in yellow robes.I am in agreement with Shyamon Jayasinghe.

Nothing wrong with owning an elephant or two. But one has to first get a license for them and follow strict guidelines on how to look after them : plenty of grass and green space to roam + another elephant friend or two to keep company+ weaned off gradually from the mother.

This is a good job creation activity for the elephant trainers, and a good spread of hoarded wealth towards this traditional industry.

When Spring Koha and Native Vedda say ‘God and Politics do not mix’ they are pointing to the root of the problem.

The Sangha was set up in such a way that the monks would be totally dependent on the laity for their existence. By this I mean that they cannot touch or control money, they cannot store food, they certainly cannot engage in politics and so on. This dependence meant that if a monk stepped out of line the laity would not support him and he would starve or disrobe.

What has happened is that most monks have broken these rules and become independent of the laity. So they now can do as they like and there is nobody to control their behaviour.
They are really laymen in robes and should not be supported by our idiot Buddhists.

“They are really laymen in robes and should not be supported by our idiot Buddhists.”

Some of them are thugs in saffron robes.

I have known a few monks who are really compassionate and care for the people, in their thoughts, words and actions. The saddest part of our contemporary history is that these monks do not get recognition, publicity and respect they deserve. They don’t seek them either.

Whereas the saffron clad thugs including Gnanasara get maximum publicity, following and enjoy impunity from their racist utterances and thuggery, inciting violence on others who disagree with them.

Here is what Sangha says ” Maha Sangha acted in a sacrificial manner during times perilous to the country and the people” a lie told often enough becomes the truth.

There is a danger lurking for the noble religion.

Real danger will be from the wayward yellow robed Monks their offsprings and from their wives and partners.

The MahaSangha has exhausted all its powers , the wise prelates numbers are dwindling so the Anarchy of Buddhism in power in the form of Uddue Dhammalokas of Buddhism.

Who and where do we turn to for pure cultural beliefs ?? No one will be there in the future …….but Would it be Modernised MahaSangha consisting and ruled by these. Yellow robed thugs??

What’s for Buddhism in Srilanka and for the future generation??? Total breakdown ??
    Food for thought.

“the wise prelates numbers are dwindling so the Anarchy of Buddhism in power in the form of Uddue Dhammalokas of Buddhism.”

Had they been wise in the last 100 or so years we wouldn’t be in this situation we are in now.

Soon there is going to be test when the draft constitution is published, this could be a crucial time to demonstrate their wisdom.

The Sangha demands the state protects Buddhism. The state is run by crooks. I would have wished the Sangha protected Buddha’s teaching rather than the by the crooks in the parliament and manning the bureaucracy. Ultimately the people who follow Buddha’s teaching take responsibility for the protection of Buddha’s teaching. Sangha should help them.

Here in this country these un-elected monks have special rights without corresponding responsibilities. They expect the rulers to taw their line. When there were issues and events adversely effecting the minorities they kept themselves to themselves. However when there were times they were expected to act responsibly they issued outrageous statement, they did the opposite, aggravating the situation further, a stumbling block for a permanent peace.

What have been their positive contribution to this island in the past 100 or so years?

An acquaintance of mine from deep, deep deep south used certain words to insult his female colleagues whenever he was really “p****d off”. He would tell the women to their face “you slept with so and so thero”. That was the kind of popularity that the monks enjoyed.

    NV .

This is exactly I am on about of these desperate housewives, they would be much more happier to be seen or photographed next to these sweet talking yellow robed cassanovas than with their own drunken two timing husbands.

Hey ! how about that for Buddha Sasana.
The worst part of these so called Religious leaders are in favour of controlling the wealth and the Political situation of the country of which they have miserably failed on preserving peace and harmony as Lord Buddha said.
    Shame on them certainly.

The Buddhist temples up and down the country owns prime lands , properties and Billions of Dollars and Ruppes in the Kitty / Banks.
The usage of electricity is astronomical day and night.
When the hospitals are struggling to keep patients alive , school children needed to study for their exams while these baffoons are kept in ultimate comfort.
    Is that fair??

Come on Native Vedda !! You can post a reply for this. The state and mentality of these Selfish Buddhist Priests ! Do they need all these EXTRAVAGANZA???

Why do the desperate Politicians and the Desperate house wives spoil this noble religion..???
Is it the fault of the Venerables or the Fault of the above two categories??
