In the backdrop of the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) launching a strike and demanding the government to give their children the best and the most popular schools, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that his government does not recognize certain individuals to be more privileged or more important than the others.
In a post on his official Facebook page, Wickremesinghe said, “We do not recognize individuals to be more privileged than others, nor do we recognize a certain career path to be more important than another.”
He however noted that priority was always towards the citizens of Sri Lanka and therefore every effort will be taken to provide the best service in an effort to address and resolve problems faces in professions and to achieve equal rights and opportunities in every career path.
He said, “But what we do recognize is that our priority is towards the citizens of this nation, and we will continue to strive towards the provision of the best service so as to address and resolve problems faced in professions, and to achieve equal rights and opportunities in every career path.”
Meanwhile the Kaduwela Magistrate Court today ordered all doctors who were forcibly occupying the Ministry of Education to vacate the premises immediately. The doctors who went to the ministry yesterday to meet the minister had spent the night at the ministry refusing to leave until the Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam agreed to provide top schools for their children. The minister had refused to meet the doctors.
According to a statement from the Education Ministry, the GMOA has demanded the education ministry to provide admission of their children to 12 popular schools in the country including Royal College, Ananda College, Visaka Vidyalaya, Dharmaraja College, Kingswood College, Mahamaya Vidyalaya, Kandy High School and Maliyadewa College.

8Right to do private practice whilst being a govt employee
9Non contributory pension
10Duty free car permit
All issues will be sorted if doctors are asked to decided whether they want to be in hot service or in private practice. They cannot enjoy benefits of both worlds.

In Sri Lanka, politicians, especially of the ‘ruling parties’, are the most privileged.

The problem here is that the GMOA think that their children would suffer from not being able to attend “GOOD SCHOOLS” in Colombo due to the Doctors being transferable every five years to any part of the Country thereby losing their eligibility to admit their offspring to Colombo schools, when they come of ‘admittance age’ should they be in outstation areas.( The AREA rule would knock them out)
But this I believe is applicable to all Government servants, who are transferable to any part of the Country who will then make the same demand IF the GMOA is given what they are asking for.
All these “good schools” have other criteria of admittance in addition to the AREA rule: the old boys/girls rule,brother/sisters rule, which the GMOA members may apply under IF they come within same
I think the GMOA is being very unreasonable to be asking a special criteria for their members in addition to the criteria that already exists to accommodate the Citizens of the Country. Where will you draw the line ?
I hope Mr PRIME MINISTER will stand by what he says and NOT change his stance under pressure.

When they go for foreign training or tranferring from one province to the other their children have to wait to get an admission to schools. Since school intake is filled with piliticians chits, security personels children and so forth. This has been the practice since colonial era for ALL government servants who get duty transfers. As a railway man’s son I had this priviledge when my parents came from Batticaloa to Kandy.

Basically I am a Consultant worked in several hospitals in SL. But I do acknowledge that Doctors are one of the professional and they have a dignity and respect not only in SL but in every country including western world. But they are not above other citizen and no need to be treated in a different way. This culture developed over decades by successive government. For example every post graduates in medicine paid huge amount of money to complete their overseas training. Believe or not I was paid 5.4 million SL rupees to complete my overseas training. SL is the only country so much money for overseas training. This is all came from poor tax payers. After all these free education. It is unfair to demand privileges and put the patients at risk! However it need to be applicable to the kids of politicians and armed forces as well.

I do not think the PM is genuine on his comments. He has come to the rescue of his favourite Buddy. Nothing else.PM should explain as to how Minister can refrain from implementing the 2005 circular based on Cabinet decision. Have they reversed the said cabinet decision by a subsequent cabinet meeting. Are they not bound by the collective responsibility of the Cabinet.
