As GMOA Strikes, Ranil Says No Special Privileges For Only One Group

In the backdrop of the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) launching a strike and demanding the government to give their children the best and the most popular schools, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that his government does not recognize certain individuals to be more privileged or more important than the others.

ranilIn a post on his official Facebook page, Wickremesinghe said, “We do not recognize individuals to be more privileged than others, nor do we recognize a certain career path to be more important than another.”

He however noted that priority was always towards the citizens of Sri Lanka and therefore every effort will be taken to provide the best service in an effort to address and resolve problems faces in professions and to achieve equal rights and opportunities in every career path.

He said, “But what we do recognize is that our priority is towards the citizens of this nation, and we will continue to strive towards the provision of the best service so as to address and resolve problems faced in professions, and to achieve equal rights and opportunities in every career path.”

Meanwhile the Kaduwela Magistrate Court today ordered all doctors who were forcibly occupying the Ministry of Education to vacate the premises immediately. The doctors who went to the ministry yesterday to meet the minister had spent the night at the ministry refusing to leave until the Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam agreed to provide top schools for their children. The minister had refused to meet the doctors.

According to a statement from the Education Ministry, the GMOA has demanded the education ministry to provide admission of their children to 12 popular schools in the country including Royal College, Ananda College, Visaka Vidyalaya, Dharmaraja College, Kingswood College, Mahamaya Vidyalaya, Kandy High School and Maliyadewa College.

All with heads will commend yours sir, This is very good sir. I am no means lanken party sympathiser. BUt good is good whoever would do so. Bad is bad regardless of the status, race or religion.

These men should finally learn that they should deliver like other professionals. Most of them are lanken free education products. They shold be debted to lanken tax payers to have allowed them to become what they are today.

It is very unfair medical profssionals to go for such demands –

May be in the days to come, they will even ask more other demands.. putting themselves on altar.

The doctors are corrupt and following the lead of the corrupt politicians who have massive Special Privileges.

Well the same should be the case for corrupt politicians who should not have special convoys and privileges.

Ranil and his politicians should set the example and not have special privileges.

But Ranil is fond of talking about parliamentary privileges as if the corrupt morons who sit at the Diyawenna Parliament of uneducated clowns are above the law and entitled to SUVs and tax free luxury living!

So what, Politicians are corrupt too.

corruption from doctors may be they are working extra hours in private practice. Why it is wonrg. It they do it the wrong way, that is the givt fault.

Why doctors can not have the same privilages that politicians have.

Why politicians have special privilages ?

You respectable PM have been adding the kind of thoughts while your rival former President has been making every effort to return to power.

He interprets that you have failed without having any good plan for runing the govt.

Can you please explain this please ? Even today former president has added if the rulers had planned it , nothing would have worked to harm the economy he has guarded by thetime acquisition was done.

I think it’s about time the President pulled out that whip that he was talking about sometime back.

Cannot understand as to how we have allowed these tax payer funded morons to hold society to ransom.

Take the doctors for an example :

1They get 13 years free education
2Free medical education for another 5 years.
      3Mahapola scholarship during campus education
4 Govt job when passing out as a doctor
5Free housing when posted outside Colombo
6Free specialized training overseas to become a specialist
7Opportunity to enter kids to popular schools in Colombo
8Right to do private practice whilst being a govt employee
      9Non contributory pension
      10Duty free car permit

All issues will be sorted if doctors are asked to decided whether they want to be in hot service or in private practice. They cannot enjoy benefits of both worlds.

We the lankens that earn medical or engineering degrees should be subjected to bond sign for 5-7 years after they complete the degrees. Then we can except them to stay in the country at least in the first few years and decide where to go next. This should be made without delay. Else, lanken sources have been abused by own folks them being very selfish about them.

RE: As GMOA Strikes, Ranil Says No Special Privileges For Only One Group

“Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that his government does not recognize certain individuals to be more privileged or more important than the others.”

Bravo!. The people commend you, Sir. You are showing leadership.Thank You!

These doctors were given free education in the medical schools with taxpayers money. Then they have children and want additional special privileges over the other children for the next generation.

So, the doctors want to be s Special Caste, the “Brahmins” the Doctors Caste, and the children to inherit the Privileges. No way should you give in to these Modern Castists.

So this is the Castists Hippocratic Oath.

Thank you Ranil, keep up the pressure on these lunatics.

These GMOA folks with a medical undergraduate degree should not receive any preferential treatment and be considered as equal as any other professional group. At the expense of us – the poor masses’ tax money, these GMOA leeches had free education to complete a medical undergraduate degree and continue to suck our blood. They want everything free- duty free cars, best schools for their dumb kids, tax free earnings, private practice during duty hours and what not.

Go and sign any bilateral or multi-lateral agreements and bring doctors from India or even moon to counter this GMOA terrorism and break their back.

Hey, GMOA lunatics, in the developed world, you can’t find a job even as a janitor because you only have an undergraduate degree from after imbibing some text books of the 18th century. If you go there, you will realize who you are. You can do all these buffoonery dancing only in Sri Lanka, the so called lawless banana republic.

Mr.Nimal, which janitor do you take your medications from? Or do you self medicate?

        Shuaib

Beheth prescription rights does not make one a complete doctor!
If you want to criticise Nimal then you could discuss the training of medical students in srilanka and elsewhere.

One of the reasons many doctors left Srilanka was because PMC graduates filled the consultant vacancies in around Colombo. by the way, Most of them are very good consultants.

There are individuals and groups of citizens who are more privileged than their peers not only in Sri Lanka, but in most other countries too.
A part of their privilege is good opportunities for their children in education and employment.
In Sri Lanka, politicians, especially of the ‘ruling parties’, are the most privileged.
Citizens’ privileges (NOT their rights) depend on their place in society.
This is true in every country, except a few.

Let me clear you this please -MY USERNAME IS LEELAWATHIE but I must not necessarily be coming from a village corner in sl. Having lived in Germany for the last few decades I know very well what I am talking about the German folks.

Some germans may be racial, but who is not racial. I believe lankens in general are more racial than any other folks. Alone you behave no clean here.

          You talk about racism:

Quote -there are the new sinhala village refugees at Germany who think they are in outer space- even colombo then was gammeyata magic for them – Unquote

alone your post does contain racial statements. I now believe some lankens are more racial than others. I have been dealing with number of nationalities in EUrope and know pretty well they are racists among all of them – but what matter is the rates.

I responded above was – to what of ” Citizens’ privileges (NOT their rights) depend on their place in society. This is true in every country, except a few”:

Sure there are enough example Germans to have gone more racial than to others. But looking back our people and their thoughts in general, I think they are more racial than anyone else.

Alone here, you sound bit swollen and disgracing your folks coming from village corners.

You the unedcuated ones spread wrong views about own folks.

Today Germans are more racial than had been before. That is why they tolerated 1MIO refugees allowing to enter the country recently. Sure there are racists in Germany. But as some clearly made it, what matters is the numbers. They donated more for Tsunami victims in the aftermath of the disaster. And they allow more lanken tamil refugees to live in Germany.
Would the srilaknens in general agree to give refugee to any south asians ? Even for few thousands, they become aggressive. They dont even treat estate tamils accepting them as a part of lanken population. What areu talking about. We the srilankens have gone on records to call us more racial than anyone else. Be real man before pointing the finger at any other men. Greetings Rome

The Civil Services Examination (CSE) is a nationwide competitive examination in India conducted by the Union Public Service Commission for recruitment to various Civil Services of the Government of India, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and Indian Revenue Service (IRS).[1] The examination is the toughest examination in India, with more than 11,00,000 applicants and a success rate of 0.1%-0.3%, one of the lowest in the world.

Thanks Premier for stance you are taking against these so called GMOA members. They think that they should be treated as a super class well above anybody in Sri Lanka. These guys became doctors using the free education system of the Govt. and is this how they payback…..????? These are a bunch of self centered, arrogant, individuals who are not disciplined enough to be in the supreme medical profession.

Can somebody enlighten me on the agenda of the GMOA? They seem to be a selfish bunch of people who are only interested in their welfare and not of the general public.

More than half these guys must have got educated free on our tax monies and now want to hold -us to ransom through the State. I hope the government will soon take stern action.

All of this is a result of free education being abused.

GMOA is a central body functioning for the medicos in the country. I really dont thinnk they have the power to react in many areas even if that is within the country.

Everybody abuse free education except few. GMOA is to protect interests of it’s members. They mentioned that number of times in press conferences and interviews. They always use heavy handed tactics to win whatever they want. Government will give in eventually. Innocent people are the ones to suffer.

Ranil hates GMOA for protesting against ECTA so this tug of war may continue for a while till someone like My3 intervene.

    • 11

GMOA’s continuous effort at scuttling Private Medical Colleges is precisely to limit intake, control the cadre of doctors, boost their bargaining power, hold the government to ransom by playing with the health needs of patients and to have their putrid ways.

They can never see reason. The answer is:

      1 Five more SAITMs

2 Signing of ETCA and invite specialists and other medical personnel to serve the country.

Weakness of successive governments has fed a particular group to grow into a FRANKENSTEIN. The time is now to destroy it.

The problem here is that the GMOA think that their children would suffer from not being able to attend “GOOD SCHOOLS” in Colombo due to the Doctors being transferable every five years to any part of the Country thereby losing their eligibility to admit their offspring to Colombo schools, when they come of ‘admittance age’ should they be in outstation areas.( The AREA rule would knock them out)
But this I believe is applicable to all Government servants, who are transferable to any part of the Country who will then make the same demand IF the GMOA is given what they are asking for.

All these “good schools” have other criteria of admittance in addition to the AREA rule: the old boys/girls rule,brother/sisters rule, which the GMOA members may apply under IF they come within same

I think the GMOA is being very unreasonable to be asking a special criteria for their members in addition to the criteria that already exists to accommodate the Citizens of the Country. Where will you draw the line ?

I hope Mr PRIME MINISTER will stand by what he says and NOT change his stance under pressure.

This mass murderer is talking like a super thug in the jungle of Batalanda. What these docs are asking is not a new thing. As government workers they are bound to get transferred every four years. When they go for foreign training or tranferring from one province to the other their children have to wait to get an admission to schools. Since school intake is filled with piliticians chits, security personels children and so forth. This has been the practice since colonial era for ALL government servants who get duty transfers. As a railway man’s son I had this priviledge when my parents came from Batticaloa to Kandy.

      Kudabanda,
Its not that the govt is not giving their children schools. It is that they want only the “best” few schools. As pointed out earlier, even a doctor who got transferred from a hospital in Gampaha to another hospital in Gampaha area too wants a school in Colombo.
As Ranil very correctly said no one should be more privileged than others. They should be treated like any other government servant in a similar situation.

Well said Hon. PM, genuine citizens want leaders like you, be straight & never hesitate to make the right decision.

please let me give the government a good idea.

Treat all the schools alike; why should we have all these types, National schools Navodya, Central, Maha Vidyala etc..etc

And boys schools, girls schools, mixed schools and racially and religiously named schools.

Some are managed by central government & some are under provincial government. Why is this different treatment?

Doesn’t that different treatment pave way for discrimination?

They come from village school & qualify on tax payers money & hold us to ransom asking for the best schools in the country. These doctors must be taught a good lesson. This is a ludicrous demand on which they have gone on strike. The doctors are most privileged members of our society. They already enjoy duty free vehicles once in 3 years. In one sense they are leaches sucking the blood of the down trodden people. My humble request. Let the doctors take time to read the comments by Colombo Telegraph readers.

For once I agree with Ranil. GMOA should realize that its the tax payers that have paved way for them to be graduated as doctors. They can not expect the government to treat them as a privileged society and give a minimum return to the country.
Its time GMOA that you tell your members to ‘think of country first and then yourself’
There should also be a maximum cap to their private consultation and operative fees. Unless any government has the ability to control GMOA their unreasonable, unrealistic expectations of their privileges and quest for cash GMOA demands will have no boundaries.

Iam a doctor-state educated but on many occasions feels ashamed of the profession for their lack of empathy, compassion and greed to ‘have more’

Well said Honourable PM. SL and these rogues need leader like. Please don’t reverse your stance under pressure. MS needs make a statement in favour of your comment in relation to leeches grown up in tax payer sweats. Otherwise these doc follows may try to display that President is with them,
Basically I am a Consultant worked in several hospitals in SL. But I do acknowledge that Doctors are one of the professional and they have a dignity and respect not only in SL but in every country including western world. But they are not above other citizen and no need to be treated in a different way. This culture developed over decades by successive government. For example every post graduates in medicine paid huge amount of money to complete their overseas training. Believe or not I was paid 5.4 million SL rupees to complete my overseas training. SL is the only country so much money for overseas training. This is all came from poor tax payers. After all these free education. It is unfair to demand privileges and put the patients at risk! However it need to be applicable to the kids of politicians and armed forces as well.

And the new buddies SLMC. all of whom who are now raking in big time, with Bond commissions, Alcohol imports, exorbitant Government leases and Building and selling Condos.

Otherwise Batalanada wouldn’t have scrapped the 1000 Mahindodaya Maha Vidyalas which were supposed to have the same Lab and Technology facilities as the 12 Schools which are mentioned in the above list.

GMOA, you are behaving like a bunch of spoilt brats.

I am an engineer; I bet I work harder than some of you lot, but I ask for no special privileges. Neither will any other decent engineer, teacher, accountant, economist et al who work their butts off but dont complain.

Honestly, all of you need to consider tying some concrete ballast to your ankles and jumping into the Beira or the Diyawanna, and staying there. And whilst doing so, please take those classic idiots Weerabangsha and Gongpilla with you.

We really can do without the likes of you.

Mate, Even Grease Boys in the Industrial West call themselves Engineers..

But they cant clear arteries, dissolve blood clots , and save precious human lives.

Unlike Batalanada and his ass licker Rajithya, our doctors have got 4 As, plus at least 12 years of medical Schooling.

And they work in remote parts of the country serving poor dalits. while Bataanada travels around in his LKR 700 Million set of wheels .

And not only Rajithaya but his mongrel son , who Batalanada Ranil shoe honed into parliament also drive Toyota Land Cruisers.

And Yahapalana suckers pay for them…

        Sumanasekera,

Of course engineers are grease boys, and that is their badge of honour along with their overalls, in case you didnt know.

Clearly you are a vert ignorant person from what I could gather through your postings.

Arteries, blood clot removals and precious human life saving will not be possible without engineers designing the tools and necessary equipment, providing the infrastructure, and even the lights in the theatre.

I think you should save yourself the embarrassment of proving without any doubt, how ignorant you are.

Apart from insulting the Prime Minister, tell me of even one thought provoking statement you have made in these columns?

What about the special treatment for wealthy people to put their children to private universities?

Ranil wickramsinghe, instead bullying doctors, should think about the number of families migrate overseas to educate their children.

think about the no of international schools.

Why only some schools are chosen for budding politicians.

Why doctors and other professional can not have the needs that politicians children have.

How do politicians use president’s fund to send their children overseas.

    there is no justice here.

Batalanda Ranil used to take part in these protests and strikes. Now we can see his true colours. ““We do not recognize individuals to be more privileged than others.” This is the same clown who tried to negotiate federalism with LTTE.

Why not auction 10% of the vacancies to the highest bidder. Doctors, politicians etc. can then complete for these places and the schools also will benefit financially.

I do not think the PM is genuine on his comments. He has come to the rescue of his favourite Buddy. Nothing else.PM should explain as to how Minister can refrain from implementing the 2005 circular based on Cabinet decision. Have they reversed the said cabinet decision by a subsequent cabinet meeting. Are they not bound by the collective responsibility of the Cabinet.
