Attack On Churches In Hikkaduwa Was Neither Isolated Nor Accidental: UNP

Media Statement by Hon. Karu Jayasuriya,

Chairman, United Leadership Council – United National Party

Issued on 14th January  2014

The upsurge in religious violence in recent times is profoundly damaging to the national psyche and should concern all fair-minded Sri Lankans. Social and religious harmony is the patriotic duty of every citizen, especially in a country that is emerging from 30 years of ethnic conflict.

Last Sunday’s attack on two churches in Hikkaduwa was neither isolated nor accidental. It was merely the manifestation of a greater tragedy that is now engulfing our nation, where religious and ethnic intolerance is being allowed to reign with impunity by the ruling regime, distorting the values inherent to Sri Lanka’s culture, ethos and long respected civilisation.

This orchestration of violence against ethnic and religious minorities is not only a conspiracy against the country but also an attempt to destroy the concept of Buddhism as taught by lord Buddha, who gave the world a philosophy of peace, loving kindness and non violence towards all beings. The actions of certain extremists claim to represent all Buddhists but by their every action they only befoul and denigrate the teachings of the Buddha. The impunity these groups have come to enjoy has brought Sri Lanka to very brink of communal strife yet again.

The greatest tragedy of this moment is not merely the tacit patronage provided to these extremist groups by the State and its agents, but also the fact that Sri Lanka finds herself staring into this abyss once again less than five years after the end of brutal and protracted conflict.  No true patriot of Sri Lanka, grateful to have seen the end of war, would have wished to see a repetition of past mistakes so soon again in their lifetime.

Religious intolerance that saw the attacks in Hikkaduwa last Sunday, has reached its climax due to the impotence and inaction of the ruling regime in the face of a dangerous trend that contributes to the insecurity of minority communities and embarrasses the Buddhist majority. While untrammelled hate speech has ruled the day, leading to numerous attacks against religious minorities and a massive spike in inter religious tensions, to date the government has failed to book a single perpetrator or hold any single person accountable for these crimes. It is baffling that the Police that is tasked with protecting every Sri Lankan citizen irrespective of race or religion has been made to look like powerless by standers to this unfolding tragedy. This leaves Sri Lankans with no alternative but to conclude that this religious intolerance and violence has the blessing of the present  regime.

As a party that believes in studying and learning from the mistakes of the past, the UNP holds firm to the values of pluralism and freedom of conscience. As standard bearers of the country’s oldest party, we will stand for the religious freedoms of all Sri Lankans. If the place of religious worship of any Sri Lankan is subjected to attack, the UNP will raise a voice against it. If we hold true to the concept of one Sri Lanka, then our reaction to an assault against a mosque, church or Hindu Kovil cannot differ in strength to the reaction against an attack on a Buddhist Temple, for they all belong to Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka belongs to them all. In this country that has been often called the land of the Buddha, there is space enough, tolerance enough, peace enough for each of these religious communities to co-exist.

Political expediency sought through sowing discord between religious faiths threatens all this.

Against this devilry and short-sightedness, the UNP will take the strongest possible stand. This party places on notice, all those officials who fail in their duty to protect and uphold the freedom of religion in this country and thus lay the building blocks for religious and communal strife that threatens to engulf and destroy the very fabric of Sri Lankan society. It is an unpardonable offence and a crime against the nation.

If the present regime believes that by patronising these extreme movements who wish to create further division they will garner the support of Buddhists in this country, they are making a fundamental mistake. The fanaticism and violence irks the moderate and peace loving Buddhist of Sri Lanka, that I believe still forms the majority, irrespective of their political affiliation. The proof of their repulsion will be known at the next national election.

Bravo UNP; absolutely the correct position to project and the language used is pertinent and punching. The appeal is directly targeted at the moderate Sinhala Buddhists; let’s see how the “moderates” Sinhala Buddhist will react to this! I hope that VP through his violent revolt had not merely masked and deferred for 30 years this dangerously inevitable devilry.

This man Karu is another Sinhala Buddhist humbug, pretending to speak for minorities.

What did they and their party do to the Tamils?: Instigated pogroms against them. His party is equally guilty as the other major Sinhala parties in sponsoring pogroms and oppressing the minorities.

        Thiru,

I do share your sentiments about the past UNP antics! JRJ lead the UNP down the wrong path and completely screwed up the political structure along with destroying UNP itself. Historically, a party in opposition would always pander to the Sinhala Buddhist Chauvinists in order to recapture power; this has been the pattern since independence. This statement of the UNP has broken away from that norm, which is a good sign. Unless the mainstream parties get their act together and embrace and foster good governance the minorities will always be used as political football. Attacks on the Christian establishments will be felt by the Sinhala as well and with the impending war crimes investigations there is hope for all Sri Lankans. Hope I am not wrong or naive!

Well, UNP was looking for an issueto campaign on, here is one!

the UNP these days under the “Homo” clique is reducedto reading the news papers looking for issues to push. They have been on to non-specific issues of ihgh crime rate, corruption, the chief justie of caourse and floods and famines.

But people are not bying. Don’t you learn Karu? Give up.

Posted By : Blogger/Writer: Maaher Sayeed Calgary,Ab Canada Why do people refuse to let their religious systems and rituals evolve over time like all others systems, ideologies and thinking do? I see all of these religions preach the same ideologies about good and evil, and they all claim to be peaceful and love is the core of their faith system. Yet the rituals, hate concepts, fear mongering and prejudice that defies common logic and sensibilities prevail in everyone of them. Most of them have violent histories, wars, killing and hate. And the developed people of today hold on to these age old concepts and reasons for hate and refuse to allow their respective faith systems to evolve like all the other things about life they so willingly change. Please share your thoughts? Why don’t we allow our religious systems and rituals to shift as well and develop/evolve to suit the modern man and thinking? ====================================== Please do take time to watch the Talk show. http://youtu.be/2MYsx6WArKY

“I see all of these religions preach the same ideologies about good and evil, and they all claim to be peaceful and love is the core of their faith system….”

There is no argument. However, global policemen, while preaching that countries should be secular, do not allow non-Christians to lead in governance. I have read statements by former Australian Heads of State confirming that Australia is a Christian country. There is no difference in Islamic countries. As regards good and evil, how many religions preach tolerance and practice intolerance?

Can a CT Reader do a research on religious freedom in constitutionally nonsecular countries?

        Professional,
There are more than 10 SL Buddhist temples in Melb. There may be people who may wish to attack these temple with anger or perhaps with good wishes.. But you can’t do it in Australia, because there are laws in these civilized countries which also protect these SL Buddhist monks and their temples.

Well done Karu! A bit late. But, it is a start.

Nation msut be galvanized to take a stand against this racist, intolerant madness. Currently engulfing our country.

Racism and religious intolerance must be met head on. It is not a topic people who love Sri Lanka should shy away from.

Coz’ hatemongers will not shy away. In fact, their trademark is unwarranted agression on anyone who disagrees with them.

UNP, JVP & DP and all others must unite on a platform of tolerance. And chase these bigoted monkeys back to their caves. On offence to monkeys.

Rajapassa clan blinded by greed for endless power are playing with fire. And in the process will destroy Sri Lanka again.

Opposition has a sacred duty to protect Sri Lanka from the ruling family. They have gone mad.

    Cheers!

Only way for UNP to attract moderate Sinhalese/Buddhists and put these unruly monks in place is to show that they oppose all forms of extremism and not only majority extremism.

Did that happen after 1994, the year Ranil took leadership of the party? I’m yet to see Karu or someone of leadership status condemning TNA for encouraging resolutions against Sri Lanka or various new religious sects pumping millions to convert traditional Buddhists and Catholics.

How Many Muslims are aware of the tons of hate spread via the Internet against them…?

We can only hope that this is not too little too late response from the main opposition. Muslims bore the brunt of their fury with a lot of patience and forbearance, which finally paid off, in the form of international exposure as marauding racist elements dressed in saffron robes. A lot of damage has already been done to interfaith relations specially against these bigots posing as Buddhist monks, who have always been considered to be serene and tranquil, peaceful and worthy of our highest respect. Not any more. Now they are looked upon as a threat to our peaceful co-existence. The damn short politicians must take the blame for misusing them to gain a perceived political mileage. We know it has misfired badly since a major portion of the population are brighter than these politicians and will not fall into the trap. They should be banished at the next hustings lock, stock and barrel to teach them a good lesson.

The ‘genocide song’ goes like this.

We demanded 50% of the power from the Brits they did not give it. We then demanded it from Sinhalese nothing happened there.

We then did Satyagraha – we got beaten up. We declared war, that did not work either.

Now we use use our usual conniving tactics to bribe corrupt agents in Tample organising commitees to throw rocks at Christians and Moslems.

The church had been there for 16 years. Why did the monks wait for 16 years to take action? Why now? Its not Gota behind this. It has to be TNA and their followers with their cause “internationalizing” efforts.

How interesting. See what Karu says: “As a party that believes in studying and learning from the mistakes of the past……”

Studying and learning? His mistakes about taking 17 and crossing
over to the UNP or the recent betrayal of the UNP by his buddy,
    John Ameratunga?

Karu has this habit of coming out with bullshit periodically. Go
tell that to the BBS and the Sihala Ravaya, Karu

  • 4
    1

On the face of it, Karu’s statement is quite appealing as he asks for calm and sensibility in the face of Buddhist religious intolerance. But the history of Ceylon/Sri Lanka particularly after independence is replete with pogroms against the Tamils and their Hindu Temples, Christians and their churches, Muslims and their mosques. We cannot forget that it was the wily President JR Jayawardene of the UNP who unleashed one of the first pogroms against the Tamils. This shameful conduct was continued by SWRD Bandaranaike, the SLFP Prime Minister who actively encouraged the Sinhala Buddhist mobs, headed by the Buddhist monks to rampage through the streets of the south to burn and kill innocent Tamils who happened to be cowering from the blood-soaked murderers. It is hypocritical of Karu to preach non-violence without first accepting the UNP’s own culpability in this ghastly national catastrophe.

The execrable racist war against the Tamils that followed the pogroms was conducted by the present President Rajapakse with the connivance of all the Sinhala forces without exception, including the racist Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith who has traded in his Christian conscience for the proverbial 20 pieces of silver from the Rajapakses. He might have thought that his treachery of his religious scruples might have protected the Christian churches in Hikkaduwa but the dragon of Buddhist extremism has been allowed to devour untrammelled for 66 years and there is no force in that country willing or able to stop it. The dragon is of course instigated and incited by a horde of thuggish Buddhist monks who are a disgrace to the founder of their religion.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of Tamils in their traditional homeland whose homes and environment were devastated by the Sri Lankan armed forces, still languishing as prisoners without any proper economic liberation or political freedom. The State continues to pour thousands of their Sinhala soldiers and colonists into the Tamil provinces to compulsorily annexe their lands and to change the demography of their ancestral lands in an exercise mirroring the efforts of the Israeli state in the West Bank.
The only difference is that the world is doing its best to halt the Israeli settlements but there is no one stopping the annexation of the Tamil lands by the vicious Sinhala Buddhist majority government. Gotabaya Rajapakse, the unrepentant murderer, is the head of this Mafia outfit.

If the UNP is to address the tyranny of the Sinhala Buddhist majority after so many years of political negligence, it has to stop by effective equality law and other political and security measures, the frequent recourse to mass and mindless violence by the racist majority firmly ensconced in all of the southern political parties. Take a look at the brutal behaviour of the majority Buddhists internationally against the minorities; whether it be in Myanmar, Thailand or Sri Lanka. They have attacked and killed minorities in these countries without mercy or compunction. You need to examine the reasons for murder in their hearts while mouthing ahimsa on their lips. Karu, we need action and not mere words if we are to take you seriously.

The proof of my statement will be known at the next national election.

Think of that great Statesman, J.R.Jayewardena, who, in October, 1951, said at San Francisco in support of Japan “hatred ceases not by hatred, but by love”. Lord Buddha never preached violence. He preached “Maitree”. All buddhists should abhor the violence resorted to by some thugs in saffron robes at Hikkaduwa in destroying religious places in the name of buddhism. In fact they have destroyed buddhism to a certain extent by their unholy and unruly behaviour.

Before becoming head of the so called Leadership
Council, Karu Jayasuriya held fortnightly press
conferences. That is in addition to his differently
worded, differently angled and selective statements.
Do they really reflect the views of the UNP or only
Karu and the person who wrote it?

Once when KJ issued a statement and there was a
controversy, he declared “I take the full responsibility.”
That response gave the show away. If indeed he has written
it, why talk about having to take the responsibility? He
only had to say he wrote it and so what?

It is a shameless thing. All this is to merely stay in the
limelight. Why doesn’t he say in a statement whether he
was aware that John Ameratunga went with President Rajapaksa
as a member of his official delegation to Jordan,Palestine
and Israel. Was KJ aware of it. After all John is acting leder
of the Opposition when Ranil Wickremesinghe is on foreign
jaunts. All these guys are top pin adiyas clamouring for a

Bitter truth, Sri Lanka is Sinhalese Buddhists Nation still . its Nationality is Sinhalese culture… There are other races (tamils, Muslims and many more ) we consider them as races not as Nationality. Problem here is other races dont want to accept Sinhalese Buddhists Nation and its Sinhalese culture.. They always make problems and demanding unnecessary things which are contradict with Sinhalese Buddhists Nation..
Since ancient times, Sinhalese kings were never try to invade neighboring countries to spread Buddhism.. But we had to face many wars eliminate invaders who were tried to destroy Sinhalese Buddhists Nation.

Since 1505 we are facing so many invasions which are targeting Sinhalese culture and Buddhism.. Up to some extend they were succeeded , and our nation facing out come of damages.

Peoples should understand where they are live in and where to they belongs

Is Rev. Karu Jayasuriya still with
the UNP? Has he read his own statement?
    God save him!!!

  • 0
    0

The first question is whether this is a statement from
the UNP or one of those bi-weekly ones from Karu
    Jayasuriya?

If indeed it is the former, why is it that the party
General Secretary did not issue an official statement?
If it is the latter, why is Karu, now Chairman of a
so called Leadership Council airing his own views?

Either way, Jayasuriya and company (Mangala Samaraweera)
included are deaf, dumb and blind politically. They are
being manipulated by Ranil Wickramasingha. That is why
none of those in the Council were aware that Ranil has
secretly allowed John Ameratunga to join Rajapaksa’s
    delegation.

Don’t pull wool over our eyes Karu Jay. It is time you
retired from politics and saved us and the nation. You
are only a time server with no vision, no strategy and
    no passion for the party.

The trouble with Karu Jayasuriya is the fact that he is
clueless. He cannot ot, left to his own, deliver a few
thoughts. So he depends on statements drafter by his
advisors. When too many do the job, there is bound to be
contradictions and counter views coming from the same
person. Will he learn from this? The answer is a firm
no. The reason – it is beyond him. He is heavily over
    rated!!

What is going on in Sri Lanka with regard to respecting any individual’s liberty to follow any religion of his/her own choice is pathetic. While there are signs of much progress in terms of infrastucture, ordinary citizens appear to have lost many of the freedoms they had enjoyed since independence. Many buddhists appear to have very little tolerance for other religions. Crafty politicians are making things worse to make themselves look good. It is truly a shame what is happening in this beautiful island. The current glorification of a wierd form of violent buddhism/saffron terror will surely lead to the next major man-made disaster in Sri Lanka. There is no leadership in this country that sees this as a huge disaster that is gradually unfolding before our very eyes. God help Sri Lanka!
