Aussie Newspaper Says ‘Sri Lanka CHOGM Deserves Support’

A major newspaper in Australia has called on New Delhi and London to refrain from following Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s lead to boycott CHOGM despite heavy pressure not to go.

In its editorial today entitled ‘Sri Lanka deserves support‘, The Australian said that pressure for a boycott of next month’s Commonwealth Heads of Government summit in Sri Lanka is gathering significant momentum. “India’s Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, is now considering joining the campaign to stay away,” the newspaper said.

The editorial said Mr Harper had sacrificed his place in a major forum with the potential to exert real influence on Colombo. “Dr Singh and Mr Cameron should not follow him. Sri Lanka needs assistance on reconciliation, not isolation.” the newspaper warned in a reiteration of the position recently adopted by Canberra at the UN Human Rights Council and other forums at which Sri Lanka’s rights record is coming in for serious criticism.

The Australian Government appears to be making a trade off on cooperation from Sri Lankan Government authorities on curbing illegal immigration, with hundreds of boats making their way to Australia each year carrying thousands of Sri Lankans attempting to get asylum, analysts say. Canberra, now led by the Abbot administration that is even tougher on illegal immigration is likely to stand firmly in Sri Lanka’s corner against the rest of the Western world as calls mount for a major war crimes inquiry in the country, these analysts say.

“Tony Abbott should ignore the clamour whipped up by the well-organised Tamil diaspora and maintain the firm opposition to a boycott he expressed after meeting Mr Harper at the APEC summit. Legitimate concerns do exist about human rights in Sri Lanka. That is hardly surprising after a civil war of exceptional brutality that lasted 30 years and saw 100,000 civilians killed,” the Australian said it in its editorial.

It said however that reconciliation was “demonstrably underway”, a claim disagreed with by many rights activists including the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay.

The conservative newspaper said that reconciliation in Sri Lanka would be seriously impaired by a boycott of what will be the biggest international event held in Sri Lanka since the 1976 Non-Aligned Summit. “The Tamils inevitably would be blamed by the Sinhala majority for any failure, with potentially dire consequences,” the newspaper said.

Getting to the heart of the issue, The Australian editorial said: “Stability and an assured place for Tamils in a prosperous and peaceful Sri Lanka would also cut the ground from under people-smugglers bringing asylum-seekers across the Indian Ocean. And it would make it easier for our government to hasten the repatriation of Sri Lankans already here.”

Canberra and Colombo have insisted separately and together that the majority of asylum seekers travelling to Australia were economic refugees and not marginalised communities fleeing persecution, a position roundly criticised by Pillay and other rights activists who claim Australia is violating conventions on refugees by this broad generalisation and deportation on these grounds.

Australia is one of the most RACIST countries in the world today and turns away refugees from all over the world and watches them drown! Australia has an agreement with GoSL to Stop refugees going there and hence is boosting the Rajapassa dictatorship..

Australia has been funding the Rajapassa military dictatorship and the Navy’s land grab on the coast to prevent Tamil refugees to go to that country. Meanwhile it gives visas and permanant residency to Lankans who can pay their way – mainly wealthy Sinhala folk..

Hey Don Stanley,Australia is doing the right thing, most of the people come as refugees just to live in Australia and get the citizenship,it’s not that they have a hard time in Sri Lanka, plus well i don’t see any wrong in deporting back the refugees. If a person wants to go there are correct ways to do that. And it not only Tamil refugees are there sinhala are also present among them.

Why does the West and mollycoddle Sri Lanka? Geopolitics-military reasons, PR work by Sri Lanka and other vested interest such as to stop refugee flow, etc. No principles involved!

All that is left for evil men to continue in evil is for good men to do nothing…or worse demonstrate support. It was the voices of criticism against the SA government’s policy of apartheid that led to it being dismantled. If the world was silent, maybe the minority whites would still be in power. If the GOSL wants to be a responsible member of the international community of nations then there are some expectations and she needs to fulfill her obligations and commitments to her own mechanisms and agreements made during the last phase of the war. Without international pressure there would not have been a NPC election… hence international pressure is important.

Sri lanka got plenty of support from many quarters in the world to defeat the LTTE on the promise by Rajapaksa that the 13th amendment will be fully implemented after the end of the war. They even turned a blind eye to the war crimes being committed on the tamil civilians in the hope that the ethnic strife will be resolved amicably at the end.

All those who supported Rajapaksa ended up with egg on their faces as Rajapaksa fooled them all by his deviousness. Even four years after the end of the war the regime is still dithering on the 13th amendment giving all kinds of excuses.

Under such a scenario Sri lanka does not deserve support but a mighty kick in the arse of Rajapaksa to teach him a lesson not to dupe those who provided the support to defeat the LTTE. Rajapaksa will only get strength from such support. The man is bad for the minorities and is bad for the whole country. The sooner he is kicked out the better for all.

Singapore Casino license were granted on Tender….the Govt called for bids….and the total Ivestment by 2 Companies was US$ 5.0 bn….Singapre has not granted any Direct Tax Holidays..

Where was this Packer boy then..? He was not heard of..If he was such a giant ” Casino Man ” he could have gone to Singapore …bullshit.

The problem in Sri Lanka is the Govt instead of calling for Bids for the so called Gaming Industry…they invite friends of their Cronies in the Country offer 10 year Tax Holiday alone will cost the Country 4 times of the Investment….besides what US $ 400.0 mn ?

People go to Singapore as it is a massive transit Hub…Besides they painfully created the enviornment to call the shots for over a period 30 years …what are we doing.? ..we are suckers…we know only to sell…the Packer Boy was invited by the Govt by offering 10 year Tax Holiday…if not no one would invest in the Country.

Look at the way the GREAT FAMER’ SON OF RUHUNA RUINING THE COUNTRY…he is giving the finishing touches better than the Yester year KALU SUDHDHAS OF THE COUNTRY..

No no no…. The International Editor of the Australian newspaper is Greg Sheridan is the best friend of Sri Lanka in the Australian media circle. His wife is a Sri Lankan, and he is a regular visitor of Sri Lanka. He wrote an article on Sri Lanka five weeks ago, after visiting the country as a guest of Sri Lankan government. He thinks KP, the LTTE leader , is one of the best hope for reconciliation. You can read the article at the first link below. The Australian newspaper owned by News Corp of Rupert Murdock. This company is very close to the current Australian government.

These cmmentators were hiding somewhere when Australia and the present party in power worked against Zimbabwe, Pakistan, Fiji and Nigeria in the Commonwealth. Unfortunately, these people are in the box of Kurakkan Boys. They are happily mix the government and the country in their attempt to promote the despots. This nothing against the Sri Lanka or its people, but against the current rulers.

One thing is very clear. The GoSL is very liberal with its dole outs to clear it’s name! The Australian wants to suck the Rajapakse siblings maybe with the hope that the SL government will help reduce the boat arrivals. What does it know of the atrocities commited by the Rajapakse regime? It seems to presume that the LTTE was responsible for the killing of near 100,000 civilians! No! Never! Most of the civilians killed were Tamils and they were killed by the barbaric security forces of Sri Lanka! How would pampering this despotic government help to further the Commonwealth values?

It seems Casino King James Packer is working hard to get his Tax free casino complex, by influencing the Australian to support CHOGM. Today Daily Telegrafh says James has appointed Macheal Cleark Australian Cricket Captain to make the cricket mad nation to vote for the Casino Bill, as his ambassador to promote the CASINO project in Colombo. Tony is with James and trying to get support for the CHOGM, when majority Sri Lankan refuse the CHOGM as well as the CASINO.

First persuade 110,000 refugees languishing in Indian Refugee camps to return to their homes amidst Sinhala speaking military. This will impress on other Tamils in many other affluent parts of the wrld to return or stop risking their lives in their ventures to Australia. Living conditions are appalling in Indian camps yet they prefer to be alive and free of ill treatment in their land of birth. If anyone can begin to understand this simple logic then they know why people risk their lives by going in dilapidated fishing boats to far away ‘safer’ countries.

The Australian is owned by Rupert Murdoch and encourages ugly capitalism in the western world. Humanity is the last thing his news corporation ever considers. For its supporter, the new PM, Tony Abbott every refuge is an ‘irritant’ without any consideration for the torture or persecution that he or she undergoes under brutal governments.

Australia is right . but to be honest the people smuggling has nothing to do with persecution it is just pure economic opportunity . I was driven to colombo by a muslim man from kandy who was a former policeman that had paid 300,000 rs to be smuggled to germany through Moscow . His telling of the tale how he got to Germany and then to England and finally to be deported back was a very good tale on a slow drive . :)

Australia is more keen to stop the flow of refugees from Sri Lanka as it was flowing like a tap with the able assistance of the Crown Prince and the Navy. So what better way to stop the flow than praise this regime to high heavens? That is what’s happening now. They are playing Rajapassa at his own game!

Some Australian news papers and politicians have been bought by the Sri Lankan Mafia. All of them are scandalous. Some of them caught for using Tax payers money for their private purposes. One journalist who writes for The Australian has accepted that he received free travel and hotel accommodation from Sri Lankan government. All Sri Lankans know what this means. Sri Lankan travel means travel + you know what. Sri Lankan hotel accommodations means Accommodation + you know what. Apparently the journo came very tired from Sri Lanka and recuperating now. Getting ready for the next venture where else to Sri Lanka again.
