Beware Of Pandankarayas Who Suddenly “See The Light!

By Emil van der Poorten –

Emil van der Poorten

The admonition that is the title of this column is an unashamed parody of that warning people against “Greeks bearing gifts.”

It comes to mind in a Sri Lankan context for a not dissimilar reason:  a relatively recent trend for those supporting the most violent and corrupt government in Sri Lanka’s post-1948 history who, after giving a new and expanded meaning to the word “apologist,” choosing to leave the sinking ship of state.  It doesn’t take a crystal ball to divine the fact that this shift of allegiance is driven by their undeniable skills in recognizing looming disaster brought upon them by the behavior of those whom they have spent an inordinate, though well compensated, amount of time covering up for up to now.

Of course, the apologists, to cover their posteriors as they retreat, keep up the chant of “They did it first!” against those they so assiduously attacked while playing commentating pit bulls to their masters.  This was their battle cry and shield every time those they defended until recently were caught with their hand in the metaphorical cookie jar (or worse, much worse).  The “disengagement” from those they lionized till just the other day is attempted with a degree of sophistication.  Far be it for them to perform a simple volte face, a mea culpa.    Rather than simply jump ship, losing the veneer of respectability they have cultivated over the years, they have devised a simple rearguard strategy.  After all, their conduct could well still be fresh in the memory banks of even Sri Lankans, a nation notorious for loss of short-term political memory!  It also presents an opportunity for those with word-smithing skills to affect a measured and orderly retreat and many of these literary, previously-sea-faring, rodents have the ability to do this.

The fact that the western democracies have a bottomless well of hypocrisy for our pundits to dip into has served as a source of never-ending joy to our “pothay-guras.”   They continue to lay the smokescreen of “they did it first” whenever they are cornered into a defence of their previous cover-ups for a government that looked after their every need.

As for those with comprehension skills barely able to cope with a comic book’s compass of politics and who were previously dependant on the tutelage of the now ship-abandoning intellectuals, all they have to do is go to Google, type in something simple on the subject line and hit the “return” key.  Hey presto! Up jumps a list that includes the like of Leopold II of Belgium, Adolf Hitler, Idi Amin, Saddam Hussein, Jean Bedel Bokassa etc., all of whom can be pointed at as having “done it first,” whatever the contravention of human rights or act of bestiality, or even cannibalism!  So, even if they don’t have tutors as easily available as before, they have other resources to reach for in their efforts to threaten and abuse critics of a government that looks after their needs on a daily basis!

While the loss of the more formally-educated who have hitherto provided leadership to the semi-literate pit bulls writing under a range of pseudonyms is bound to be felt by their charges, those street-corner thugs of the “blog-world” will continue apace with their ranting abuse for reasons that I have already indicated.

When the services of the sophisticated apologists were available to those spouting vulgarities and stupidities parading as comment on internet websites, such contributions were phrased so that they projected explosions of frustration against the victimization of pious “Sinhala Buddhists.”  Appearances were obviously totally deceptive in these instances because all of these were simply orchestrated by figures further up the feeding chain.

In any event, the behaviour of people of “European complexion” provides all kinds of bounty in the matter of violence, death and dismemberment.  There have been, thanks to the freedom of expression prevailing in Europe and the New World, many graphically descriptive and substantiated stories of violence perpetrated by “white folks” that, literally, turn one’s stomach.

Our propagandists, the front-line commentators on websites particularly, have taken unto themselves the task of using such information to tar every “other” with the same brush. For instance, Hitler’s definition of racial “purity” encompassed fair skin, blonde hair and blue eyes.  The fact that this constituted the classic Nordic person has been utilized to suggest, subtly and otherwise, that the Norwegians were a bunch of pro-LTTE Nazis.  When the mad racist Anders Behring Breivik killing 69 people in a bombing and shooting spree, expressed admiration for the behavior of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, it presented a heaven-sent opportunity for several in the government ranks to connect Norwegians with the Tamil Tigers, claiming  that Norway sought to propagate something similar in Sri Lanka to that which Breivik sought in Norway!  Since Biblical times, the fate of peacemakers has not been one coveted knowingly by anyone with any knowledge of history.  The pillorying of the Norwegians and several of the other “Western states” in their efforts as peacemakers in Sri Lanka owes its origin to this fact.

To identify the sophisticated practitioners of this art by name would not be fair by any whose identity might escape me at this time.   Also, the list appears to be growing so quickly that I would probably omit some deserving individual by the time this piece is published!  However, suffice it to say that their recent “conversion” from lying, fabricating mouthpieces for the government to mealy-mouthed moralists and wanna-be epitomes of sweetness and light are hardly convincing to those who vividly remember their conduct years, months and even mere weeks ago.

Perhaps, something to keep in mind, again, in our present troubled time is that saying that goes, “Fooled me once, shame on you.  Fooled me twice, shame on ME!”  In any event, “Beware of the pandankarayas who suddenly ‘see the light!’”

“In these troubled times” says Mr Poorten in his diatribe against the people who only want the inhabitant population who happen to be the great majority still, to live in the current peaceful environment.

What is wrong if these people whom Mr Poorten kindly address not only as Pandankarayas, but call semi literates, expose the foreign elements who are engaged in destabilization and demolition deputies under the pretext of “doing good” for our inhabitants ?.

Although Mr Poorten has mentioned the Nordic Nation of Norway as an example , there are others in the region who are genuinely interested in the welfare and wellbeing of the inhabitants future in Current Lanka.

An excellent example is the high profile delegation of Dutch Industrialists who were in Srilanka only a few days ago.

These are the cream of the crop and they want to invest big time to provide jobs to our youth.

Going by the a phenomenal job they have done to restore their heritage in the magnificent Fort in Galle they seem to put the money where the mouth is.

Do these developments indicate any “troubled times”?.

BTW. Wonder whether the Dutch embassy has gettogethers on occssions like these?.

    Dear Emil van der Poorten,

Are you afraid to write in plain and simple language for fear of your personal safety? Be bold, hit those who deserve it.

I can understand that how perilous living in Sri Lanka today is with open view points.

My family are of Greek extraction, from Zeylonica, arriving in Ceylon in the 17th century and we have lived here amicably, intermarried to the ‘n’th degree, playing cricket and Rgby for leading schools etc.

I take offence to the writer’s crass use of the vulgar, racist and discriminatory saying “Greeks bearing gifts”.

In fact the original saying is “Jews bearing gifts” and the Jews diflected it over the years to “Greeks”. The writer is doing the same thing it looks like. He should check his facts at least.

This saying is not in use anymore in Western countries and it says a lot that a seemingly an internationalist is resorting so such vulgar usage.

Shame on you, and you owe us all Greeks an apolgy.

Emil van der Poorten has lot to learn …. Sri Lanka is a island where multi ethnic communities from all over the world were settled amicably, intermarried to the ‘n’th degree … Greeks, Arabians , Indians, kapiris, Dutch, English, Tamils, Muslims, Portuguese …. came to Sri Lanka in ancient times and did not go back for many reasons …. They settled, intermixed and majority of them collectively developed a unique language and culture based on Budhism for many many centuries …. People like Emil Van Der Poorten can not bear this culture or religion or language …

I salute to you, Michaeln for writing “…. My family are of Greek extraction, from Zeylonica, arriving in Ceylon in the 17th century and we have lived here amicably, intermarried to the ‘n’th degree, playing cricket and Rgby for leading schools etc …”

Michael Achilios, Bruno Umbato, Jim Softy and K.A. Sumanasekera (aka? aka?):
Considering that all of you, very obviously, come out of the same stable it makes sense to deal with what you have to say in one response.

For a beginning, would even one of you possibly enlighten readers of where “Zeylonica” is or was at the time “Michael’s” forebears came here from there? Let me suggest that it is a simple fabrication because “Zeylonica” is simply a Latin word commonly used in ornithological, botanical and other scientific terminology for “Ceylon,” or Sri Lanka, AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH Greece – ancient or modern – or any part of it then or now.

As for allegations of racism……….. suffice it to say that before I work myself into a froth about that kind of rubbish, I consider the source!

You people really should change your “tuition masters” because they are about as illiterate as you are. But then, they are the ones holding the purse strings I suppose …….

          Michael Achilios:
An amusing footnote if you are interested in Googling “Zeylonica” from where you claim your family originates.
It will produce (at least)three pages worth of references to nothing but “the Purple-Rumped Sunbird!” and NONE so much as suggesting the word denotes some part of ancient or modern Greece! Perhaps, this is the genus to which you and your buddies belong and your complaint is about my being prejudiced against Purple-rumped sunbirds rather than those of Hellenic origin!

One thing’s for sure, what with “Purple-rumped sunbirds” and lying Irishmen parading as “Abhayas,” CT is beginning to produce more than information. It is beginning to provide mirth of a quantity to rival the Montreal Comedy Festival!

I suppose one shouldn’t complain when Sri Lanka has just been rated as one of the unhappiest places on earth!

This man is arrogant as well as ignorant. Now he is trying to teach me my own family histoy!

Come out of the same stable, Ha? Hope not the same one he comes from.

My ancestors were refugees from Spain kindly given refuge by the Ottoman empire in the island of “Thessaloniki” known among Ceylonese Greeks as Zeylonica.

You can only pity ignoramuses like this man. He seems to think that he knows much more than he really does.

            Michael Achilios:
I am sure that readers of this material are deeply grateful for your new interpretation of history that has Sri Lanka as part of the Ottoman Empire, when, according to you, it was called “Thessaloniki.”
It seems that CT has not only liars and comedians but the mentally ill contributing to it as well. If this keeps up, CT is going to have to put out a special Mulleriyawa/Angoda edition!
Sorry about the reference to “stables” because it would have been more appropriate to suggest that the lot of you belonged in an outhouse that was an essential part of life in rural Sri Lanka not so long ago and sometimes still is.

An allusion to the story of the wooden horse of Troy is recorded in Virgil’s Aeneid, Book 2, 19 BC, just before the Hebrews became Jews.

“Do not trust the horse, Trojans. Whatever it is, I fear the Greeks even when they bring gifts.”

Of course that English version is a translation. Another translation, by John Dryden, has “Trust not their presents, nor admit the horse.”

The same thought was also recorded by Sophocles (496 – 406 BC), in Ajax:

“Naught from the Greeks towards me hath sped well.
So now I find that ancient proverb true,
Foes’ gifts are no gifts: profit bring they none.”

Afterall, are these ‘extractions’ still painful Mr.Hellene?

“Timeo danaos, et dona ferentes” is the Latin version.

Φοβοῦ τοὺς Δαναοὺς καὶ δῶρα φέροντας.
          Beware Danae bearing gifts.

          The original Latin text:

Equō nē crēdite, Teucrī! Quidquid id est, timeō Danaōs et dōna ferentīs. “Do not trust the horse, Trojans! Whatever it is, I fear the Danaans, even when bringing gifts.”

As related in the Aeneid, after a nine-year war on the beaches of Troy between the Danaans the Greeks of the mainland and Trojans, the Greek seer Calchas induces the leaders of the Greek army to offer the Trojan people a huge wooden horse, the so-called Trojan Horse, while seemingly departing. The Trojan priest Laocoon, distrusting this gesture, warns the Trojans not to accept the gift crying with this aphorism.

Immediately afterward Laocoön and his two sons are viciously slain by enormous twin serpents, the Trojans assume the horse has been offered at Minerva’s (Athena’s) prompting and interpret Laocoön’s death as a sign of her displeasure.

Minerva did send the serpents and help to nurture the idea of building the horse, but her intentions were certainly not peaceful, as the deceived Trojans imagined them to be. The Trojans agree unanimously to place the horse atop wheels and roll it through their impenetrable walls. Festivities follow under the assumption that the war is ended.

      Julampitiye Amaraya:
I am referring to those writers (and others) who, after spending a long time in defence of the current regime, are now choosing to become critical of what their erstwhile “leaders” are doing.
I did not seek to make any reference to those you have named because they belong in two totally different categories: Pillayan, KP, Karuna in one and Adele Balasingham in another, because it is my understanding that, unlike the first three, AB has not (yet?) been “re-born” and welcomed into the government fold.
      I trust that clarifies matters.

Mr Poorten’s second category AB handed out certificates to girl Child Sodiers and women Suicide Cadres who grauated from AB;s training classes perhaps in Elocution.

Wonder what she is doing nowadays.

Perhaps AB is “re born” as a Life Coach for the ex LTTE hierarchy who have become the heavy weights in the Human Rights Protection Brigades in the West.

    Mr Poorten,

I understand your reluctance to name these pandankarayas who have “seen the light” for fear of your personal safety. I am sure you will agree with me that these individuals are part and parcel of Sri Lankan politics since independence. These opportunists shift their allegiances according to which way the wind blows. We have seen numerous examples over the years.

These are shameless people who continue to pollute Sri Lankan politics and society and it is partly the fault of the people who tolerate or support their behaviour. Many educated and intelligent people were blinded by Rajapaksa’s charm and gave him unstinted support to misrule the country as he pleased. They stupidly ignored his corrupt and criminal past. Now these people are realising that they supported a monster who is destroying not just democracy but the moral fabric of the society, instigating communal and religious disharmony and enslaving the people to China. When Rajapaksa is dethroned I hope these pandankarayas also leave the country with them.

    Emil,

You write for the times and draw on your wide experience, which I for one would salute. However, I would be generous to those who now ‘see the light’ and change. After all Luke 15 tells us of the rejoicing in heaven when even one sinner repents. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Still, I welcome when our living opportunists have their Damascene moments and I may even shake their hands when I meet them in the political salons of our island – but I will always count my fingers afterwards! At least with such wayward creatures we can always discount their latest manifestations by a reminder of their track record.

Re the ‘they did it first’ brigade. I knew the corner had turned, when some years ago, an old Royalist, caught transgressing pleaded that ‘they did it first’ referring to a bunch of lesser privileged oiks. I knew then that all hope was lost when a Royalist admits to allowing someone else to set his standards.

As for some of us writing under pseudonyms; I have a nice villa in the deep south and from my roof garden I can see, on a clear day, the south pole. Those who share this sylvan haven are sadly totally devoid of any political sentiments, so it would be terribly amiss of me to expose them to those who would want to rearrange the furniture or worse. After all, I am old enough to well remember the Cyril Mathew ‘invitation first eleven’ moving about Colombo one hot July morning armed with nothing more offensive than a householder list (mind you, the golayas carried alavanguvas).

Additionally, I would rather swim in a pokuna full of crocdiles than be indentified as betraying tidbits that I often become privy to as an innocent ‘non-combatant’.

    These are indeed hard times.

    Emil,

Just to help you to reveal the identity of some and I can do it blindfolded so I want know who is watching.

    1) Prof Rajiva: He has every reason to pour scorn on MR as his
security was taken away. He now only has his Driver
and a Guard Dog. I advised him to travel in the white
Van which is much safer and he can also pick some meat
on his way back for his dinner.

    2) Dayan: ( Dr removed)

On my recommendation he is on study leave and he has
enrolled to Re Read his PhD as the last one was dodgy
and I found so many holes in his Article which was
leaking like a Torrent and I was drenched. He got into
a mood of festival of Songs and is now singing in the
Rain. He will be back after 3 years.

    3) Chandraprema: The Author of Gothas “War”. He has taken leave of his
senses and recently let slip a long held Secret by
revealing all those missing sons and daughters were
Extra judicially Killed. He might have met his fate
in the same manner. I haven’t seen his name on the
missing persons or property list but if I do I will
let you know. I get them once every 100 years.

On the same subject after analysing the Articles from those ( above) distinguished Scholars I commented that these Profs and Doctors are prescribing the wrong medicine.

My finding was that Sri Lanka is terminally ill therefore only as a palliative treatment what is needed is a Combination of Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy. But the Doctors are prescribing CONTRACEPTIVES for SAFE SEX. My friend the patient is going to die of shock.
