Allowing to alter 19A will debilitate UNP. If the majority in the UNP is still with the UNP then Slap Party cannot change the 19A without an election. Now the election seems to be not imminent to avoid frictions with Ranil.
19A needs 2/3(Including not voted). Royals don’t have simple majority to pass Budget. If Ranil negotiate with his guys, they may keep out of Parliament until next March. This will enable then to run the goverment until the election.
The question is who is capable to predict a three months movement, at this daily changing circumstances.

It seems like nepotism in a sense. Something only a dictatorial regime would do. However, keep in mind that democracy is a luxury. It is not at all necessary for economic growth. A prime example being China. Mahinda as PM can aid the process of economic growth and development if investments are chosen carefully. It would be even better if the we got rid of the UNP altogether, as the Opposition in SL does not serve any purpose (other than to lose elections).
