Buddhism And Sexism: Can There Be Buddhist Gender Equality?

Buddhist women, including nuns, have faced harsh discrimination by Buddhist institutions in Asia for centuries. There is gender inequality in most of the world’s religions, of course, but that’s no excuse. Is sexism intrinsic to Buddhism, or did Buddhist institutions absorb sexism from Asian culture? Can Buddhism treat women as equals, and remain Buddhism?

Let’s begin at the beginning, with the historical Buddha. As told in “The First Buddhist Women,” the Buddha originally refused to ordain women as nuns. He said that allowing women into the sangha would cause his teachings to survive only half as long –- 500 years instead of a 1,000.

To those who control this website.

What is the real purpose behind repoducing this article? It is because you haven’t got enough items to keep going, or is this part of your agenda.

Do you realise that gender equality began in Buddhism? Hinduism did not have it and it has never been part of Christianity.

Why dont you publish an article about child abuse in other religions.

    You are pathetic!

All you guys are arguing in vain: It is like various Sinhalese persons arguing what Tamils aspirations are.

Let’s have women commentators views on all the misogyny of the humbugs in all religions, Buddhism included.

It’s stupidity that men argue about what women’s rights should be: Are we in the dark ages when men decided what women should do?

I don’t see anything wrong with the article, if Buddhists cannot defend the worst attack ( not this) on Buddhism , then there is something fishy.

Buddha allowed women ordination after numerous rejection only after his step mother who gave him mothers milk as 07 days old fresh born baby, no wonder he couldn’t reject request, but women Bhikkue’s did not last more than 02 centuries or less in India, but men’s is still in it’s best of days , if i may say so, even after 2600 years in India & this world & growing.

Buddhism is such that if you follow it you will never become anybody , even a Buddhist but some body who leaves the whole world & universe for good if you are intelligent enough to understand life , existence & death, but the monks who carries the message of Buddha, perhaps thankfully have not been up to the task, so they live with us , Human beings, hence we received the message of Buddha.

Just imagine if male monks in meditation in a jungle, have a female monk as beautiful as Maria Sharapova, the Tennis Star ? who would come back from meditation , because they haven’t got rid of our own basic instincts of seeing beauty & sexually attractive objects, & only trying to do so.

To be very honest I cannot meditate if I see Maria Sharapova.

So Lord Buddha was right in initial rejection of women as monks & understood.

        Bhikkunis petition HRC
        By Premalal Wijeratne

In an unprecedented move, the Bhikkunis in the country have submitted a petition to the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL), demanding recognition and acceptance of the Bhikkuni Sasana. Commissioner of the HRCSL, Dr. Prathiba Mahanamahewa, said a petition has been filed in this regard and the Commission has initiated investigations. He said the petition has been filed by Ven. Inamaluwa Sumangala Thera and Ven. Sheelapriya Mahinda Therani. Based on the investigations, the Commission will give its recommendations, the Commissioner added.

The Department of Registration of Persons, the Department of Buddhist Affairs and the Ministry of Buddha Sasana, are cited as respondents.

While the petition avers that the Bhikkunis, who were in the Buddha Sasana have become obsolete during the latter half of the Anuradhapura era, following the civil unrest, those now serving as Bhikkunis who are part of the Order, and have received upasampada (ordained), be accepted and be registered with the viharas, be issued identity cards and accorded all the privileges of the Order.

The petition was filed under Chapter II, constitutional provisions 9 and 10 of the 1978 Constitution, which provide for the fostering of safeguards to Buddhism, and Chapter III which grants fundamental rights to the petitioners to secure religious freedom which they are entitled to.

All Man-Made philosophies are time bound and are subject to change with the prevailing times and have adverse effects on lifestyle. The Democrazy (mob rule) can easily legalize an evil act. Example gambling, prostitution, slander etc.

Three Mighty Abrahimic Messengers of God had one Message.

Moses, Jesus and Muhammed (peace be upon them all) brought a simple message. And had a single mission. To convey to humanity the true message of Salvation

None is worthy of worship in truth except Allah.

    Celibacy and monasticism
Those who choose to practice Buddhism as ordained monks and nuns, also choose to live in celibacy.[3]
Sex is seen as a serious monastic transgression. Within Theravada Buddhism there are four principal transgressions which entail expulsion from the monastic Sangha: sex, theft, murder, and falsely boasting of superhuman perfections.[4] Sexual misconduct for monks and nuns includes masturbation.[5] In the case of monasticism, abstaining completely from sex is seen as a necessity in order to reach enlightenment. Buddha’s criticism of a monk who broke his celibate vows—without having disrobed first—is as follows:
“‘Worthless man, [sexual intercourse] is unseemly, out of line, unsuitable, and unworthy of a contemplative; improper and not to be done… Haven’t I taught the Dhamma in many ways for the sake of dispassion and not for passion; for unfettering and not for fettering; for freedom from clinging and not for clinging? Yet here, while I have taught the Dhamma for dispassion, you set your heart on passion; while I have taught the Dhamma for unfettering, you set your heart on being fettered; while I have taught the Dhamma for freedom from clinging, you set your heart on clinging.
“‘Worthless man, haven’t I taught the Dhamma in many ways for the fading of passion, the sobering of intoxication, the subduing of thirst, the destruction of attachment, the severing of the round, the ending of craving, dispassion, cessation, unbinding? Haven’t I in many ways advocated abandoning sensual pleasures, comprehending sensual perceptions, subduing sensual thirst, destroying sensual thoughts, calming sensual fevers? Worthless man, it would be better that your penis be stuck into the mouth of a poisonous snake than into a woman’s vagina. It would be better that your penis be stuck into the mouth of a black viper than into a woman’s vagina. It would be better that your penis be stuck into a pit of burning embers, blazing and glowing, than into a woman’s vagina. Why is that? For that reason you would undergo death or death-like suffering, but you would not on that account, at the break-up of the body, after death, fall into deprivation, the bad destination, the abyss, hell…
“‘Worthless man, this neither inspires faith in the faithless nor increases the faithful. Rather, it inspires lack of faith in the faithless and wavering in some of the faithful

Catholics, Hindus and Moslems haven’t even thought of ordanining monks. Anglicans only began ordaining monks few years ago.

Buddhism recognised gender equality 2500 years ago. Gauthama Buddha’s step mother was the first woman to be ordained. Not only gender, Buddhism recognise equality among all living beings including animals. You won’t find animal sacrifices here.

Western liberals caught up with the gender equality only now. Buddhists have reconised a higher level of equality decades ago really. Still they are lagging behind. In another decades or so they will realise even animals have a thing called the conscience.

Hindus have their pantheon of female saints, who in the league of lesser Gods. There are also saffron clad female Swamis and Sanyasis among Hindus, who highly respected and have many devotees. The Ramkrishna mission also has ordained female Swamies. The Hindu priesthood of course are limited to temple service and other ceremonies that have a religious component. They however not expected to preach or proselytise. Hinduism is the only religion and philosophy that recognises the equality of male and femae in life- the Siva and Sakthi concept- embodied in Lord Siva.
How the Hindu society treats its women has nothing to do with the religion.

      Dr.Rajasingham Narendran.

        Hello there Dr.Rajasingham,

From all non-agnostic faiths Hinduism is probably the most discriminative from social stratification to animal sacriice. Female Swamis probably signals progress. Although it pales into insignificance when considering how low-caste descrimination pervades every aspect of Hindu society.

          Vibhushana

Lord Buddha blossomed as a reformer of the Hinduism being practiced and failed. But what he preached has not made a difference in many Buddhist countries. Caste is a force among the Sinhala-Buddhists too. President Premadasa was openly insulted for being of a lower caste. The marriage notices that appear in weekend papers show how pervasive caste is among the Sinhala-Buddhists. Even the Buddhist monks are affiliated to caste-linked groups- Nikayas. The same curse afflicts the Tamils, but changes are slowly but surely are taking place in societal attitudes.

Both the Sinhalese and Tamils in Sri Lanka suffer from the same afflictions, although the degrees may vary.

AS an educated man you should have known that DHAMMA or religion and culture are completely different things.

SEE how western capitalist culture and the Church have clashes in the middle east. For economic reasons the west is destroying the middle east though various SPRINGS or CIVIL WARs. That same civil wars get rid of Christians from the Middle east. Vatican is angry with the west now.

              Kim softy,

Middleton Murray in his book on the Vatican, concluded rather profoundly, ” There was only one Chritian and he died on the cross”. I am one who thinks this applies to all religions. We miss the substance and fight for the labels. We as humans are a divisive lot. This is our curse and in the Christian terminology our cross. Despite the many blessings we have as humans, we become often lowest form of life because of the divisiveness we wallow in.

If God created man in his image as the Christians believe, I often wonder whether HE had made a terrible architectural/ design mistake during that process! Please note that even God is referred to as HE. It is probably only in the Hindu and the Greek pantheon that one finds female Gods! The Hinduism practiced in real life is entirely different ball game, as with all religions, including what Budhism is being moulded into today in countries like Sri Lanka and Burma.

            Hello Dr. Narendran,

Buddhism had faded away circa 10 CE due to South Indian invasions in particular Kalinga Magha’s arrival.

Buddhism was re-established with the 3 Nikaya’s under the patronage of Hindu kings ruling Kandy. Caste would have become customary in Sinhala Buddhist society due to prevailing political enviorenment. Other than that there are no authentic links to caste from Buddhism.

Premadasa was propbably considered more “low class” than caste. Although he did become President after all.

              Dear Vibhushana,

In Vedic Hinduism ( the word Hinduism is a British coinage) there are no castes. What are called Varnas are descriptions of individual human natures. We find these Varnas among humans all around us. It is we the lesser people in terms of the great Rishis ( sages) who have corrupted this concept into castes based on occupations and in time into castes based on families we are born into. Incidentally, the Buddha is considered
an Avatar of Lord Krishna by the Hindus to this day- a position greater than that of a Rishi.

Further, I think the Hindu roots of the Buddha and Buddhism are manifest in the caste system amongst the Buddhists in Sri Lanka and their religious beliefs and practices.

Jim Softly the Budhist Sinhala Man,
Havnt I told you that Lord Buddah is a SATAN. he preached all good things to the world and then he said ” DONT MARRY ” to man… so there is a problem stars. He screw 40,000 women and enjoyed the best sex life in his lifetime and at the age of 30 he ran away to Jungel and stayed under the tree like a Begger. In Abrahamic religon says that Satan was a Teacher of Angels as he has extensive knowledge of all, then when he disobeyed, he was casted out to the world, so he performed as Buddah the Satan. So Budhism is Satanic… straight away says that there is no God or a Creator.. so that created Darwin, Hitler, Carl Mark and all monsteres in teh world…. well i feel its enough.

    Buddhism and Women
The Position of Women at the Time of the Buddha

In ancient India the position of women does not appear to have been a very happy one. Generally women seem to have been looked upon as being inferior to men. And, at times they were considered as being on the same level as the Sudras, the lowest of the four castes. Their freedom was extremely limited. The general view appears to be that they had to be under the care of parents in their childhood, under the protection of husbands in their youth; and in their old age they had to be under the control of their sons. Therefore, it was thought that they do not deserve any freedom. Their main role was considered to be that of housewives, managing the affairs in the house according to the wishes of their husbands.

Even as a wife the life of a woman was often miserable. This was specially so when she had the misfortune of being a co-wife. Jealousies and conflicts between co-wives were a common feature in ancient Indian society. The widow’s plight was still worse. Normally, a widow was not allowed to remarry. It is said that a widow had to kill herself by jumping into the funeral pyre of her husband.

Women did not have educational freedom. Education was not considered as being of any importance to women. Their religious freedom, too, was restricted. As they had only little freedom, their chances of performing meritorious religious rites, too, were very limited.

Generally a woman was considered a burden on the family because the males had to bear the responsibility of looking after her. Besides, she was incapable of performing religious rites for the well-being of the departed parents, and therefore, she was considered as being of little use. This is why the birth of a female child was considered as a sign of misfortune in a family. Parents prayed for the birth of sons, both to carry on the family name and traditions and also to perform the necessary religious rites for their benefit when they are dead and gone. How miserable the father felt at the birth of a daughter is seen from the event connected with King Pasenadi of Kosala. When this King was informed that his queen gave birth to a daughter he came to the Buddha and lamented. The Buddha had to pacify him saying that good daughters are as good as good sons.

Buddhism does not consider women as being inferior to men. Buddhism, while accepting the biological and physical differences between the two sexes, does consider men and women to be equally useful to the society. The Buddha emphasises the fruitful role the women can play and should play as a wife, a good mother in making the family life a success. In the family both husbands and wives are expected to share equal responsibility and discharge their duties with equal dedication. The husband is admonished to consider the wife a friend, a companion, a partner. In family affairs the wife was expected to be a substitute for the husband when the husband happened to be indisposed. In fact, a wife was expected even to acquaint herself with the trade, business or industries in which the husband engaged, so that she would be in a position to manage his affairs in his absence. This shows that in the Buddhist society the wife occupied an equal position with the husband.

The Buddha’s advice to the King Pasenadi of Kosala, who was a close devotee of his, clearly shows that Buddhism does not consider the birth of a daughter as a cause for worry and despair.

Buddhism does not restrict either the educational opportunities of women or their religious freedom. The Buddha unhesitatingly accepted that women are capable of realizing the Truth, just as men are. This is why he permitted the admission of women into the Order, though he was not in favour of it at the beginning because he thought their admission would create problems in the Sasana. Once women proved their capability of managing their affairs in the Order, the Buddha recognised their abilities and talents, and gave them responsible positions in the Bhikkhuni Sangha. The Buddhist texts record of eminent saintly Bhikkhunis, who were very learned and who were experts in preaching the Dhamma. Dhammadinna was one such Bhikkhuni, Khema and Uppalavanna are two others.

The Theri-gatha contains numerous stanzas that clearly express the feelings of joy experienced by saintly bhikkhunis at their ability to enter the Order and realize the Truth.

Once upon a time, srilanka was a country, others considered as buddhist country. But so long buddhist violent groups like BBS and the like rose up, created by ruling thugs, the image of the buddhism in SL disappeared within years. Today, I myself would not want to give dana to any safron robbed men – just because I cant know who are they in those costumes. But I have to respect my aged mother^s wish so I let it go. If I would myself engage with givings, I would rather decide it for HOME FOR THE AGED or Children. I even go on saying whoever I keep in tough to do so.
Most of the monks in red costumes in SL today are not respectable. In the same time, I am very sad to see, the injustice that face by good kind of buddhist monks – that are the rarity in the country today.

From Foreigners I heard, there exist so called monks that behave no different to beach boys. They keep sending letters to those europeans asking more funds to develop their temples. But the reality, as it proves – particular monks would leave SASUNA after collecting those funds.

These countries were invaded by Muslim savages from the Middle East. Buddhist nuns and monks were wiped out in India. Monastaries were destroyed by these merciless hordes.

In 1193 Mohammad Bakhtyar and his armies swept across the Gangetic Plain destroying all Buddhist temples and institution he found and killing all Buddhist monks who fell into his hands. Nalanda was almost completely plundered, but a few monks who had managed to survive the onslaught returned and attempted to revive the institution. A second attack by the Moslems followed and this time Nalanda was destroyed for good. The abandoned ruins of the once great monastery slowly crumbled into dust.

Well,Well..If Lord Buddha has had the pleasure of indulging in sex before his ordainment, what authority does he have to order Buddhist monks to refrain from marrying. This is a natural instinct which cannot be controlled by any human, be that be under meditation or starvation, may be for a short period of time, possible but definitely not for indefinite periods. How can you possibly order someone not to do, after you have thoroughly enjoyed the pleasure of something, very illogical and unreasonable. I always pose this question to my Buddhist colleagues and I have never got a conclusive answer, can anyone enlighten me on this. My point is all the Sri Lankan Buddhist monks are not married and diverting their frustration on some trivial issue to vent their frustration. Correct me if I am wrong. Please do not be offended, my dear Buddhist friends. Just need some clarifications.

Jim. Mohammaed ( Peace be up on to him) was a True man, so he showed us how to marry and have sex while Lord Buddah raped 40,000 women and then asked rest of the man to be Puffs. Please Jim, you know yourself that even your wife wont allow your own sons to go to Temple alone as She knows that hers son will be raped by Homosexual Monks. Please stop, I studied in Jetwana evening school as Tution and i know what happnes there, they dont take us as we are Muslims and not allowed to go to the Rooms of Saadu the Kolu Pappa. Please stop non sense of yours, Buddah is Satan

      Dear Ansar,

Sex is only one desire, try to understand Buddhism, it says get rid of all the worldly desires, then only you can stop Birth, existence, death, re birth, so long as you are glued to those desires you will never attain Nirvana, Buddhism is not another religion telling you how to live worldly human life but in the end you should end the cycle of birth & death (read above my posting as well).
Prince Siddhartha enjoyed sex as you & me & as a Prince he had all the worldly desires at his toe , but he left the princely life & attained Buddha-hood & first thing came to his mind was ,if there is any body who could understand the truth i discovered ? then he thought of his former teachers, namely Aalarakama & Uddhakarama puthra & he saw in his visuals they were dead ,then thought of 05 monks in search of truth whom he met just before went to forest for meditation seven years ago & delivered first sermon.
Buddhism is a philosophy rather than a religion & cannot be understood with a mind set of beliefs of unseen / unknown creators & blindly worshiping them as the eternal truth & reason for existence of life & universe, believing that human life enjoyable for ever, seeing & witnessing the suffocation at every second in human life all over the world, perhaps in universe as well.

If any body cannot resist enjoying sex ,then there is a room, they should never take to robes but live as laymen enjoying sex & all such desires & just observe 05 precepts ,i.e. not killing any living being, not telling falsehood etc.

Final attempt of Buddhist philosophy is attaining Nirvana, for that you don’t have to be a Buddhist monk, & indeed best brains can achieve that.

Buddhism is sexist to the core. The Jataka stories make repeated statements that demean women. The Buddha himself initially refused to ordain women and had to be ‘persuaded’ to change his mind. He saw women as the ‘seductress’ and ‘temptress’. There is no gender equality in Theravada Buddhism! Only men could attain Buddhahood! Not one of the 28 previous Buddhas were women. Add to that the caste element in Sinhala Buddhism and we have a real cocktail of exclusion and hierarchy no different to other religions!

Gender equality it is not in any religion although the degrees may vary.
and it should not be ,why all the religions treat women less than men ? the simple answer is for the sake of the civilization from the ape culture .. The feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy society , and become lesbians.

If they get the chance every human will turn bad. Only lack of chance and social morality civilizes them..this is most important when its comes about women ..becoz only women having the ability to give birth the new generation so every one want her to keep away from..

we should not allow girls to study more than the basic knowledge ..and we should not allow them to be take part in religious or political activities

after the women freedom movement only this world and our society started to ruin …on the way to ape culture ..get ready friends send all the girls back to kitchen from universities and offices ..let them be there ..let them get marry in their sixteen or seventeen ..let them not study and manage the family and children ..no more education for women equal to no more unemployment for men ..

    Gay Buddhist monks. Nice pic!

Talking about child abuse the first reported child abuse is from 7 century in Arabia.

A young Muslim girl aged 9 by the name Aisha was sexually abused by a man over 50 years old.

Example is better than advice!!! :)

Which other religious LEADER did that?

    Hello all ye good people,

I am amused by most of your comments. Some are so full of venom and bias. Calm down people. Do not get caught up in the web of prejudices.

Do not blame Buddha or his message on the inherent shortcomings within the broader society.

Cast, creed, language, colour of skin, sexual orientation and gender differentiation favoured the kings, the village headman, the priests and nowadays politicians, both democratically elected and authoritarian. These persons often are worthless, yet you choose to beat their drums.

What is relevant is Buddha’s message. Take it or leave it.

Priests and politicians are not the conduit to Buddha’s teachings. Some priests are practitioners of pure priestcraftry. They serve their own ends. Most politicians are no better.

JimSofty, I beg to differ with you. Mohamed (Peace be upon Him) never engaged in incest, as claimed by you, he did marry them. He never was a mass killer either, kindly get your facts right. It is due to his compassion and generosity that Islam spread like a bush fire in every nook and corner of the world, ably assisted by his companions who were guided through in the like manner. My point however is , he never prohibited anything which he himself practised, he guided the mankind in every sphere of life through experiencing the hardship of life, just like any human being will go through in life. This makes him unique, as no one can say, he did not go through what we go through in life and shun himself away from the teachings of Islam, saying that “He could say, but we need to live in this world”. This is the stark contrast I am trying to explain in relation to Lord Buddha, where he has said things to adhere, when he was in isolation from worldly affairs.Hope I have made myself clear. Please do not pit Lord Buddha against Prophet Mohammed, they both are noble men in their own might. Please try to understand my point of view.
