Buffalo Democracy

By R.A. Ratwatte

The father of Singapore discovered it, lesser minions like JR Jayewardena corrupted it and it looks like Mahinda Rajapaksa will write the book on it. Along the way the Ghaddafi’s, Mubaraks, Saddam Hussains of this word also produced their own brand of it.

What it basically is, is how to lead a bunch of people who think they are educated, are too lazy to work on a honest living and constantly look for free handouts and shortcuts to the top, to those peoples version of utopia.

The key is to play on that powerful human emotion greed and avarice. The buffalo (in this case the human referred to, with abject apologies to the bovine species) needs to do better than his kinsman, his neighbour and his friend. “Do better” means have more worldly possessions, a bigger car, house, TV basically anything you can think of. To facilitate this they need money, much more than they can ever earn honestly. So you hook them with cheap credit and then you play them on the line like a well hooked fish, when they are unable to pay their dues. You force them to take bribes, to do “private jobs” on official time, you open the way and you show them how.

Mahinda_RajapaksaOnce you have your Buffalo populace on their way, they don’t care the proverbial “damn” for any decent human value you can think of. Decency, compassion, honesty, work ethics, they all go out of the window. Respect for the law and those who are charged with enforcing it ceases to exists, because the law is virtually nonexistent. How can you respect someone who tries to enforce something that doesn’t exist?!

If you can throw in some patriotism along the way it does a good job of making all the self doubts and any lingering penchant to even think about the way your forefathers lived and conducted themselves, away. A “war victory” for example or some sort of ethnic division helps immeasurably.

In due course the buffalo herd is in full stampede and may the devil take the hindmost! Anyone who lags to think about the right and wrong of what is happening or even a slight pause to spend a fleeting moment to think, is deemed a traitor and an enemy to the well being of the herd.

Very soon this type of thinking and behaviour becomes the norm. It is firmly embedded into the very fabric of society and any attempt to dislodge it results in the total collapse of that society. Look at what the Americans’ have tried to do in Iraq, Egypt and Libya. What is the result? Of course for an economy like America, that depends on the arms trade and arms manufacturing to survive it would have been a “win-win” situation anyway, wouldn’t it? That is a different story!

Does this sound familiar? Yes, I am talking to you people of Sri Lanka….. why whinge and grumble about what is going on right now ? You don’t really care do you? As long as you have a bigger TV and your 3 wheeler is newer…..

News about the police constable’s fate after issuing traffic fine to SL deputy minister remind me an old saying… It says something like “when the father ‘ Eliye Hitagena Hujja KaranaKota, Lamai Duwa Duwa Renawa’.

When can be see an end to this Raja Paka Hegemony, and become a civilized nation?

Are the Para-Sinhala Buddhists from South India ready for it?

The top leader know for the Helping Hambabthota theft.
one brother known as Mr 10%.
the other brother bought Applollo hospitals. and several big business establishments.

It all consists of Bufflao leaders.

there is no employment opportunities of of millions of Sri Lankans.
All those who have studied going for overseas jobs.
Those unskilied workers end up in middle east as labour force.

our buffalo leaders don’t know what to do to revive the economy other than putting up massive white elephant projects.

Your analysis 100% accurate Mr Ratwatte.

Trouble is, in Sri Lanka there only rich Sinhalese and poor Sinhalese.

The upper-middle class is missing, and is writing accolades about the motherland and dancing biala in the West.

If the middle-class remained in Sri Lanka instead of taking their public-tax-funded university education to the West, together with cash from ME-cases from sale of property, money and brains would remain in Sri Lanka, and the upper-middle class would be the medium for money to flow from the Sinhala-rich to the Sinhala-poor.

Middle class with smaller TV’s and using public transport (albeit having a bit of a better house and nicer clothes) will be the benchmark for success, instead of the chocolate-eating, hotel-hopping aristocrat who drives around in luxury cars.

    Dear,
    Remember,
You Are Preaching to Sinhala Buddhist, not BUDDHIST Sinhalese.
To Tamil Hindus, Not to Hindu Tamils.
To Many sects of Catholics and Christians , not Catholics or Christians.
To Sri Lankan Muslims of name sake Muslimeens.

So what We expect from peoples, As you said from Buffalos; Who are not following their religions or philosophies????????.

    R.A. Ratwatte,

You summed up one aspect of the sick society very well. There are other vital aspects of the sick society needs fixing too. May be somebody can throw some light on those aspects too.

Mr Ratwatte you have joined the ungrateful elitists’ band wagon to aimlessly distort the truth and throw mud at the the Sri Lankan leadership to please the enemies, whilst enjoying the peace dividends they gave after the elimination of the Tamil Tiger leaders, the most brutal terrorist movement of this century, that caused the death of around 80 to 100000 Sri Lankans, the majority of whom were innocent Sinhalese, who were deliberately targeted in the North and randomly killed in the rest of the country. If we believe the stories of the critics, then over 90% of wealth of the nation is owned by the Rajapakse’s. Yes, though not as bad as in other South Asian countries like India, in Sri Lanka too there are many uneducated as well as educated corrupt individuals both in the Government and in the opposition, but the worst of all are those commentators, journalists, politicians and NGOs who dance to the tune of LTTE diaspora, for reasons we can easily guess.
I hope you are not an admirer of the Camerons, Harpers, Pillais and other of the kind. Please support the nation to grow, rather than join the enemies of Sri Lanka.

Dealing with Buffalos, I wonder who choose the picture in the article?
It may have crossed the minds of the commentators that the picture has
been edited – the two horns are missing! Picture it again.
