Calculated Attack On Grandpass Mosque

By Latheef Farook

Latheef Farook

Latest step in the build up to commemorate anniversary of 1915 Sinhala Muslim Riots with July 83 type attacks on Muslims?

The timely settlement of the dispute over the mosque at the Swarna Chaithiya Mawatha   averted a potentially disastrous conflict which had all the ingredients to turn the area into a killing field. This could have even spilled over to other parts of the country.

This farsighted  and generous gesture,  in the true spirit of  Buddhist teachings, included the cutting of the nearby Bo tree and offering Muslims to pray  in the temple  “Banamaduwa”, (preaching hall)l need to be admired by Muslims all peace loving citizens of this country.

This is the need of the hour in a country which was torn apart due to a few hundred Buddhist extremist’s reckless attacks vandalizing mosques, Muslim owned businesses and a vicious hostile media campaign poisoning the minds of main stream Sinhalese against Muslims.

If  peaceful solution is possible following violent attacks on the mosque this could have also been possible without  violence. This is what we all should strive to achieve.

The attack on the Grandpass mosque came weeks after hooligans vandalized the Mahiyangana Mosque when they threw a slaughtered pig,   its body parts together with organs and blood inside the prayer area.

Widespread suspicion among knowledgeable Muslims today is that these Buddhist extremists are preparing the mainstream Sinhalese to justify a major July 83 type attack on Muslims to commemorate the 1915 riots.

Today the island’s Muslim community remains a deeply frustrated lot. During the recent past they were subjected to severe attacks and harassments. Three years ago they were attacked by very well organized “grease yakkas, during the holy month of Ramadan.

Then came the destruction of 400 year old Muslim shrine in Anuradhapura under the watchful eyes of the police followed by the attack on Dambulla mosque. Since then these attacks continue unabated.

Buddhist extremists who had taken the law into their hands and emerged as government within government descended to such low depth that they painted a picture of a Muslim with a pig’s face with Allah’s name written on it in Arabic language.

However Muslims remained calm throughout during all these provocations.

Today there is growing feeling of helplessness and frustration among Muslims who were disgusted at the failure of the police to take perpetrators of these crimes into custody. It appears that these lawless thugs seem to be having the blessings of the police which is duty bound to protect the beleaguered Muslims.

They were also deeply disappointed that the government has failed to condemn these attacks. Extremist Sinhalese politicians demanded the government to take the perpetrators of the Sinhala Ravaya Buddhist Temple in the north this week. The question is why remain silent on bringing perpetrators of the attacks on Muslims to book.

Perhaps one law for Sinhala Buddhists and another law for Muslims. This shows where the country is.

In this climate of hate and fear, Muslims living under siege remain a discarded lot. Despite all the sufferings they were subjected to during the 30 year war racist war between the two major communities they are deprived of employment opportunities in the government, semi government,   private sector and even in the armed forces including police, came the a latest attack on yet another mosque, now at   Grandpass.

The day after celebrating Ramadan festival Muslims in and around Swarna Chaitiya Mawatha at Grandpass gathered at the mosque there for Maghreb, sunset, prayer on Saturday 11 August 2013.

While prayer was in progress a group of Sinhalese thugs entered the mosque and began attacking the worshippers. This was not something unexpected as there was tension there for sometimes and around fifty police officers were deployed in the area   from early morning onwards.

According to the media more than 200 people, including women and monks, came in buses and other vehicles to attack the mosque.

It was the time when the feelings among the Muslims were “enough is enough and it is time to protect ourselves “as police failed to protect them. Inevitably the question asked is “what is preventing the police from arresting the perpetrators?

Explaining the attack on Grandpass Mosque a 12 August 2013 statement by The Secretariat for Muslims had this to state;

The reason for the attack was based on the claim that the new three-storey structure on Swarna Chaithya Road in Grandpass was an unauthorized building. However, the Mosque authorities had received a letter from the Ministry of Buddha Sasana and Religious Affairs, permitting the functioning of the mosque at its new premises at No. 158 after the old Molawatte mosque on No. 166 of the same road had been acquired by order of the Urban Development Authority (UDA).

Led by Buddhist monks (allegedly the Sinhala Ravaya), the mob numbering around 50 to 60  which later swelled to 200 , started stoning the Mosque just five minutes after sunset prayers began. The signal for the attack was the ringing of bells at the adjoining Buddhist Temple. About 20 to 25 men then broke down the locked door and entered.

When the mob tried to enter, the imam (prayer leader) at the time, Mohammed Arshad Moulavi and other elders moved all the people from the first and second floors to the top floor. Two youths and three elderly persons on the ground floor were seized by the mob and severely assaulted. They sustained injuries and were later hospitalized.

Despite the presence of around 40 Policemen, with more Police personnel arriving as the attack was in progress, the Police were passive spectators. No arrests were made.

As news of the attack spread, the Muslims in the area rushed to the Mosque. Among these were office bearers of the Islamic organization known as the Sri Lanka Thowheed Jamath. They were joined by other Muslim elders. Together they started asking the Police to disperse the mob and safeguard the Mosque; however the Police were trying to disperse the crowd of concerned Muslims instead.

As more and more Police arrived, the Muslim leaders kept on demanding that the mob be dispersed and ring leaders arrested, but top Police officials insisted that the Muslims leave the area first. The Muslim leaders flatly refused to leave unless the people wanting to destroy the Mosque were arrested or dispersed and the Mosque’s security guaranteed.

A large number of Muslim youths then managed to rally to defend the mosque, resulting in the mob dispersing from the scene, with the help of the Police. A curfew was declared until 7 a.m. Sunday morning and again from 6 p.m. Sunday evening to 7 a.m. Monday morning.

Meanwhile, the next day August 11 a meeting was held at the Ministry of Buddha Sasana and Religious Affairs, where the Government has decided to revoke the UDA order and return the old Molawatte mosque located at 166 Swarna Chaithya Road back to Muslim devotees. It was decided at the meeting that the Bo Tree on the premises would be removed and the mosque be granted permission to expand.

On the whole what the attackers fail to realize is the damage they had caused to the image of   Buddhism and Buddhists in the island. The Buddhist extremists are not the sole owners of Buddhism which is the message to the entire humanity. They project themselves as the saviors of Buddhism and Sinhalese and hope to attain NIBBANA by attacking Muslims, Mosques and Muslim owned businesses.

Did they attack a single tavern selling liquor, casino, gambling center and other such places operating in violation of Buddhist principles?  What does this demonstrate? They are not interested in Buddhism and the Sinhalese, but to poison the minds of Sinhalese to create the required environment to justify a major attack on Muslims for political purpose.

Perhaps to serve their local and foreign masters’ .With these racist elements learnt no lessons from the recent past and operating with free hand Sri Lanka does not need enemies.

The irony is so far the authorities failed to condemn any of these attacks on Muslims. Instead the gangsters were protected and pampered?

All what the Muslims and even the mainstream Sinhalese are asking is to enforce the law of land and ensure the security of all.

Best thing is for muslims to collectively and formerly make a complaint to Navaneethampillai when she comes here soon regarding the utter disregard shown by the government on the balatant attacks carried out by sinhalese thugs against muslims. Also organise muslim nations to take up this matter in Geneva in next march.

So, What are the lessons from Grandpass?

      1. “According to his report, thugs from outside the area met at the local Buddhist temple, then made their way clandestinely through land occupied by Sinhalese to the back of the mosque.”

      2. “The temple continued ringing its bells, drawing an even bigger crowd of Sinhalese from the neighbourhood, ”

3.”The Police – who had been assigned to protect the mosque in the wake of a demonstration by the Ravana Balaya – stood and watched. DBS Jeyaraj says that they may even have encouraged the mob.”

      4. “The mosque was saved by the arrival of local Muslims, who were determined to protect their place of worship.”

      5. “This is when the authorities decided to intervene.”

Muslims: What is the lesson here?

      1. You need to protect your property because the police and the state will not protect it.

      2. Be prepared to protect it.

      3. File Charges against the police the attackers and the police in the local courts and the international courts.

      4. Do Not settle.

      5. Make it international.

While two wrongs don’t make one right, just go check how the minorities are treated in majoritarian Islamic countries. Just go to Pakistan and see how the Blasphemy Laws under Penal Code 315C operate. So, get your house in order first and get your wonderful ministers in the Government who say there is no problem to let us know if there is a problem or not. Then talk.

SL Muslims are not Pakistani Muslims. Why are you comparing the two? Are you saying that Muslims in Malaysia can attack Malay Buddhists because of Burma and Sri Lanka?

Blashphemy law is not in Islam. Quran says there is no compulsion in religion. SL Muslims never blashphemed or insulted Buddha.

First the house of the Sri Lankan Muslims is Sri Lanka and that house is in order at least as far as the religion goes.

Talking about Blasphemy laws if there was any it is the Buddhist monks that should be charged as they are blaspheming against all other religions. Muslims, Hindus or Christians have not done this.

Practicing religion in your place of worship does not break any laws so get your facts straight.

The main problem with the Sri Lankan mentality Leon, is that we like to justify our faults by comparing them to faults of other countries. This why we a stuck and keep moving backwards. Why not strive to be better, to rise above all the conflict and make Sri lanka one of the best countries in the world? No! we cannot do that, because we have to be just as bad as the next country.

Muslims in Pakistan follow the same Koran interpretation that Sri Lanka Muslims follow in increasing numbers today. Today all Sri Lanka Muslims are being systematically forced to accept Wahhabi ideology.

Moderate Sufi and Ahmadi followers have been killed, and their Mullahs have being persecuted, and their houses have been burned by Wahhabi thugs. Not just that, Sufi Mosques were vandalized and its minerates were destroyed. Graves of Sufi saints were dug and corpses removed from burial sites by Wahhabi thugs a few years back.

Just like in Pakistan, young Muslims are being brain-washed by Saudi trained Wahhabi Mullahs in Madrasas Island wide. The most infamous Wahhabi in the world is Bin Ladden. Imagine what awaits for Sri Lanka.

The majority of Sri Lankans are lazy, uneducated and easily fooled. That’s why the easiest think for the lazy majority is to rob and intimidate the hardworking minority. The majority people are greedy and want to take over all the lands and businesses of the minorities by causing fear and chaos this is the master plan of the GOT A IDEA man and is using his storm troopers to achieve this. The Bohra community have paid this group so they are not affected ,the others including the moors, melons and other innocent thambias are going to be chased out…Sebrenica will look like a picnic

      Dear Bin,
I believe having high percentage of people who are fools is not the real problem. Every country has high percentage of these people. (private enterprises has this same analogy) In those countries, may be only 10% or 15% are wise and has courage to move forward their countries while 30~40% people trying to drag it down or make it still.
In countries like, SL, Pakistan or Burma, I guess still there 5% of wise people like you, but they don;t have courage to move the country forward.

This gives an idea of the thinking behind the attacks on Mosques and Muslim business interests.

One of the reasons why the regime can do what they want and get away with it, especially when it comes to the minorities can be summarized into three words -“LACK OF UNITY”. Politicians such as Rauff Hakeem, Isbullah, Mustapha, Cader, Fowzi, Thondaman and his catchers are traitors to their own community. They play games with the voters who voted for them, to the detriment of these voters. They work hand in hand with the regime. Its time these politicians are kicked out and a new set of politicians such as Justice Wigneswaran are elected into the Parliament. Its time to clean the Parliament.

Instead of looking at matters superficially on an ad hoc basis, I think we need to look into the feeling/thinking of different communities in Sri Lanka to get to the root cause of ethnic/religious problems:

The ruling elite and a substantial part of the Sinhala intellectuals think and or feel that Sri Lanka belongs to them: Buddhist intellectuals would go one step further and say it belongs to Sinhala Buddhists only.

Tamils of the North-East think and feel that North-East is Tamil speaking people’s traditional homeland, that includes the Muslims. Muslims of the East definitely think/feel that it’s their homeland.

Tamils, Christians and Muslims in the island think/feel that they must have equal rights like Sinhalese in Sri Lanka.

The conflicting thinking and feelings above are the causes of ethnic and religious disharmony which has escalated to a peak in the recent years.

To find an acceptable solution the international community must intervene and find an equitable solution: The solution may even entail the solutions found for the former Yugoslavia.

Many people might not agree with me, but it seems to be a rational way to proceed:

This is urgently needed to prevent the genocide of Tamils/Muslims/Christians, especially in light of the 145,000 innocent Tamils massacred by the armed forces in 2009 in the latter stages of the war.

christians are blood brothers of buddhists. We both are sinhala :) and we knw the love you have shown towards muslims in north. Everybody knows that.

One thing that fuels many anti muslim riots is population explosion of muslims. And mind u tamils too are affected by it.

Christians are blood brothers of LTTE. That is why Catholic/Christian Churches support and supply LTTE.

Even Catholic/Christian priests are publicly supporting LTTE. When LTTE was in full action Sinhala Catholic/Christians shut their ass and mouth together and never condemned the Tamil Catholic/Christian priests publicly involved in bank robberies with LTTE.

Jayalath Jayawardene, the Christian UNP member came to participate in the LTTE propaganda meeting in Canada as well!

Christians are blood suckers of Hindus and Buddhists and not ‘brothers” of any one!

The Dept of Muslim Affairs and Waqf board must get more involved. For a start can we have a Muslim minister in charge. There must be some policy and guidelines with regard to the setting up of mosques which is fair and equitable.

Otherwise if this is left to the public to decide this will continue to be a problem. If there are a certain number of muslim families they must be allowed to build a mosque in close proximity and the state should authorise a suitable location.

This is nothing to do with sense of belonging of any community for any particular region. This is just a cleaver but disgusting political ploy by rulers to reinvigorate the divide and rule concept that have been used all over the world in many occasions. Poor, uneducated and disenfranchised Sinhalese are led to believe they are the true sons and daughters of the soil and the country and Buddhism belongs to them. Regardless of how rich and well-off Muslims and Christians are, they are inferior to you although you may have to lick you own sweat to feed yourself. The government knows monks are the perfect avenue to get this message across without getting accused of racism. When something happens they will do some perfunctory and feign law enforcement without really punishing any perpetrators. Religion and patriotism are shoved down the throats of poor rural masses that constitute the majority of the voter base. As long as they feel they are superior to all other people in the country they will be only too happy to keep voting this regime back into power over and over again. All these people who go on these rampages in the name of Buddhism have no clue about it or even do not care about it. All they want is that badging as a Sinhalese Buddhist so that they feel they rule over all minorities. The government can stop all this nonsense overnight if they jail one of two fat monks (to become someone’s girlfriend in the prison) and break some limbs of a few idiots who want to be heroes. However, that is unlikely to happen as long as this management model keeps working!

IT IS SAID THEY ARE CONCERNED; BUT WHY SHOULD THEY THEN TAKE PART IN THE SUMMIT AHEAD:

    THIS IS PARADOXIAL:

    ————————
European Union concerned over unrest in Sri Lanka
English.news.cn 2013-08-14 19:11:02 RSS Feedback Print Copy URL More
COLOMBO, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) — The European Union (EU) has joined the U.S. in raising concerns over Sri Lanka’s political and religious rights after three people were killed in an army shooting and a Buddhist mob attacked a mosque, the bloc said in a statement on Wednesday.

The statement comes days after a mob allegedly led by Buddhist monks attacked a mosque in Colombo.

On Aug. 1, three youths were killed and around 50 injured when the army fired at a group of protesters demanding clean water in the town of Weliweriya about 30 km from Colombo.

“The European Union Delegation in Colombo is concerned by recent incidents in Sri Lanka including the deaths of three civilians following protests in Weliweriya on August 1, and the attack on the Grandpass mosque on August 10, which followed a number of other attacks on mosques and churches,” the statement noted.

Since the unrest, the army and police are conducting investigations but the main opposition organized a massive protest march on Wednesday in the capital to demand action from the government.

“The right to freedom of peaceful assembly and the right to freedom of worship are fundamental to democratic societies and should be protected by the state. The European Union looks to the Sri Lankan authorities to ensure justice through speedy, impartial investigations and to enable all Sri Lankans to exercise their human rights freely,” the statement said.

Muslim ministers who are part of the ruling coalition led by President Mahinda Rajapaksa also issued a strongly worded statement slamming the government’s “lukewarm and ineffective” measures to curb anti-Muslim violence that they claimed had strengthened extremist groups spreading chaos in the country.

The ministers, who also wrote a strong letter to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, demanded that the government take action to prosecute and punish those acting against national unity.

Present government is losing it’s popularity among minorities. In order to remain in the power the government is going to do future campaign in the shadow of racism. This is just beginning and we may see more incidents in the future, we believe! To enable its idea Muslim political leaders also will somehow go with the government because of their inability to protect their own community.
    Time will tell everything!

Such a big noise about attacks and damage to mosques – sure, this is to be protested.
But the citizens who protested never noticed the looting, damage, desecration and destruction of hundreds of hindu temples, and attacks and even killings of hindu priests, over the past decades in the nothern and eastern provinces.
Maybe it was considered to be an essential part of the “war”!
The latest is, the army has banned devotional songs being played over a public address system,at the Kokkoducholai Temple in the batticaloa district.

Widespread suspicion among knowledgeable Muslims today is that these Buddhist extremists are preparing the mainstream Sinhalese to justify a major July 83 type attack on Muslims to commemorate the 1915 riots.

Latheef Farook, Sinhala buddhists or in that Sense, Buddhists are lunatics as muslim – extremists are. christians to celebrate their violent past. but, buddhists don’t have and I don’t think they intend.

If you have such evidence inform the govt. Don’t talk like an idiot.

lets be frank here- government wants a 83 like situation. normal sri lanken politicians have always been suicidal must be to do with buddhist phylosphy which is nothingness. this brings out a very pessimistic and frustrating view of life- see the monks. how can a monk give a lecture to a married man with children. the married man with children is superior to the monk who doesnt take care of anyone, his food is provided,no challenge in life.so make a issue out of nothing to feel important.Lets put it into a table format:
    monk married man
no respocibility have responsibility: provider food.clothing
    school fees etc
    no relationship Have relationship-wife,inlaws,freinds,enemy
    except: temple

idle time 24hours cannot idle-above reasons
    advice-nill advice-universal,bringing up children,family
    no experiance experiance varied

read and think who you are worshiping is it worth the effort?

In the west, it is very common that people say that religions are harmful to the harmony among humans.

Sri Lanka was a very peaceful society before the introduction CHRISTIAN AND ISLAMIC EXPANSION SCHEMES.

Muslims need to get this into their thick heads…

Muslims lived peacefully amongst the Sinhalese and Tamils before they started Halal… before they started loudspeakers at mosques… before they began turning houses into mosques and prayer centers….before they dressed like ninjas…

if Muslims claim to be victim… they need to look at themselves in the mirror and remove the elements they themselves introduced to segregate themselves and start living as they did before…

When there was no halal..no loudspeakers.. no mosques everywhere—- Muslims were not attacked…

Dev go fly a kite, I live in Negombo and it is not the Muslims that use loud speakers but the Christians, the Muslims use it for a few minutes to call for worship, but the Christians use it all day

As for the Ninja what is your problem why do you want to look at their women, they don’t want to dress like our women who have no principle showing everything, even sleeping around. Go back to the time when we were small, our mother never wore this slutty dress and showed their bit off. We speak about our religion but we don’t practice it.

As for Halal did the price go down after the mark was removed….what happened was the sales went down as the Muslims went back to eating healthy, they stopped buying milk powder and bought fresh milk. Let me tell you something I run a small restaurant and for years I wondered and asked why the Muslims never ate in our shop, but after the JamiULema issued certificates they started eating from our places. They didn’t eat before because they were racist but because they followed there religion and didn’t want to upset their god and now because of idiots like you we have gone back again to the dark ages.

Dev you need to know how Muslims live according to their religion. Not only in Sri Lanka but in every part of the world. Arab Muslims, Canadian Muslims, British Muslims, Australian Muslims, Sri Lankan Muslims, all same religious practices, eating, socializing, bringing up children with religious (Quranic and emulating life style of Prophet) knowledge are all the same. Except different in language. The Mosques, worldwide and most beautiful structures. Halal is multi trillion Dollar business worldwide, if you come to the Middle East you will realize. Useless croaking like frog in a well. Just go to the internet and do some research on women wearing Abhaya, Burqa and Niqab. Even democratically elected governments are trying to stop it. But have they been successful? So we look at ourselves in the mirror and ask what can we do? Change is coming thick and fast. You need to think and say ‘if we cannot beat them, then lets join them’. So come on, what are you waiting?

Dev You must examine your thick head before asking others to examine theirs.

You have the freedom to blare out pirith and bana on a daily basis. Yet you cannot tolerate one minute of call to prayer repeated five times a day (all of 5mts)!

The Bo tree was not removed only a few branches were cut. First we Buddhist should stop lying and misleading, then we should question the morality of others. Any one can go and see for them self. The Muslims are not perfect either. This country is screwed wish I could leave this shit hole and settle some where else

      Nuwan,
I for one who studied, worked as an Engineer, lecturer and a businessman in the UK for almost two decades know the life there by experience. Good for you; find out for yourself whether the West is the epitome of the morality they profess or the hypocrisy we point out. Good luck for you, go experience the bliss.

The West is learning hard way that bogus morality and diabolical hypocrisy doesn’t work with Muhammadans. Consequently, you’ll see incessant fights between Christian crusaders and Muslim Jihads fighting for supremacy in the west within the next ten years.

Latheef Farook rightly said. Buddhismmis for the whole humanity. BBa, Ravana Balaya, Jhu, Sinhala Ravaya are confining it to the Sinhala Buddhists of this country. Then, how Buddhism grow in the world. Buddhism is not the sole property of Sri Lankan Buddhists. They are tarnishing the image of the Buddha and Buddhism. They are destroying it. Making a joke out of it. Demeaning the teaching of the Enlighten One.

If the Political leaders and the Maha Nayakas of Kandy failed to take timely action to stop this non sense, Buddhism will be condemned in the world and Sinhalese of this country will be treated as parayas in the world. We won’t be able to go anywhere in the world. Our children will suffer for the mistakes of few extremists elements in this country. I appeal in the name of the Enlighten One to save Buddhism from this nasty group. I appeal especially to the Most Venerable Maha Nayayake Theros of Malwatte and Asgiriya. If they failed to solve these problems, they will be answerable to the entire Sri Lankan population, not only Buddists and Sinhalese but the entire Nation. Do not make historical blunder.

“Perhaps one law for Sinhala Buddhists and another law for Muslims”
Well! For decades it was one law for others and one for the Tamils – who were subject to so much of criminal injustice for nearly 30 years. They bore it alone – with some help from India and the global community.

“…Did they attack a single tavern selling liquor, casino, gambling center and other such places operating in violation of Buddhist principles?….” They (BBS and cohorts) certainly did not is what the world remembers. How will they? The owners of these hooch joints, casinos, brothels are owned by Buddhists who regularly provide big cash to the priests and the temples in their areas as Dayakas and in other forms of assistance. Why have not the Mahanayakas raised their voices against these terrible unbuddhistic vices?
