The head of the Catholic Church in Sri Lanka is complaining that the Government has failed to investigate swirling allegations about an entity called “Sonic” and claims that one of the Easter Sunday bombers had been in touch with army officers shortly before the final explosion on April 21, 2019.
Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, a staunch backer of the Rajapaksa family came out swinging at his latest press briefing on Wednesday (2). He issued a strong condemnation of the failures of the present government, and even wondered out loud about whether the country was experiencing the effects of a curse.
Those who had swept to power pledging to protect the country were engaged in destroying it, the Head of the Catholic Church charged.
“Even nature seems to be turning against the rulers,” the Cardinal claimed.

The Cardinal continued to question speculation surrounding a grand conspiracy behind the Easter Sunday attacks at Wednesday’s briefing.
“The former Attorney General said there was a grand conspiracy but never specified what it was. There are certain elements in the Easter Sunday attacks which have not been investigated thoroughly,” he claimed in televised remarks.
He said insinuations that politicians were also involved in the bombing plot had never been investigated. “There were statements made at the Commission that were never investigated further,” the Cardinal charged.
Cardinal Ranjith claimed that the Dehiwala bomber Jameel who set off the final explosion had met an “army person” called Sonic.
It was former IGP Pujith Jayasundara who first revealed that the Dehiwala bomber had received a phone call from a military intelligence officer 45 minutes before he detonated himself. Strangely, the Easter Sunday Commission never investigated the matter further, or studied the Dehiwala bomber’s cellphone data records.
The Commission never investigated who had been in contact with the suicide bomber Jameel, the Cardinal charged.
Observers said the Cardinal would probably retract his remarks in 24 hours, after phone calls and appeals from powerful sections of the ruling administration.
On the eve of the anniversary of the Easter Sunday bombings this year, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith claimed the attacks were “politically driven” and had nothing to do with Islamic extremism, only to walk the remarks back the next day after they agitated the high echelons of the Gotabaya Rajapaksa Government.
The Cardinal exercises significant influence with his Catholic flock because of his persistent calls for justice for victims of the Easter blasts two years ago. The majority of those who were killed in the bombings were worshippers at Easter Sunday mass in churches in Colombo, Negombo and Batticaloa.
His remarks in April this year provided a serious impetus to claims for many other quarters about a political conspiracy behind the Easter Sunday bombings involving the Sri Lankan state security and intelligence apparatus. The code name ‘Sonic-Sonic’ was first revealed by Harin Fernando in Parliament two months ago. The Code has been widely speculated to refer to the State Intelligence Chief and long-time Gotabaya Rajapaksa ally, Maj. Gen. Suresh Sallay.
The allegations sparked panic for the SIS chief and the hyper-securitized regime of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The weeks following Fernando’s disclosures, buttressed by similar revelations by JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake and SJB MP Manusha Nanayakkara and subsequently Cardinal Ranjith too, saw Sallay and other security officials rushing to meet with the Catholic bishops’ conference to vehemently deny the allegations and “set the record straight”.
At least one of these meetings was arranged for the SIS Chief by stealth by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, Colombo Telegraph learns. Premadasa, who summarily cancelled a previously scheduled meeting with the Catholic Bishops Conference, ensured the meeting slot would be filled by Maj. Gen. Sallay and his team. The meeting had been sought initially by SJB MPs who provided a briefing on revelations in the Easter Sunday Commission report to the Catholic Clergy in Colombo. At Premadasa’s behest, both appointments provided by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference were cancelled by the SJB. The Opposition Leader’s conduct has sparked concern about his allegiances and continuous desire to appease powerful sections of the Gotabaya Rajapaksa administration. Premadasa has also urged SJB MPs to “ease up” on the Easter Sunday. Fernando and Nanayakkara have denied these reports. However neither MP has brought the subject of the Easter attacks and intelligence involvement in the bombings since.
In an unprecedented move, the SIS Chief also “briefed” the Attorney General Dappula De Livera on the direction of the Easter Sunday attacks probe. The SIS has no role in the investigation. (By Nimal Ratnaweera)

Let’s assume he acted on it and informed all churches of this imminent attack on Easter Sunday and advised them to close all churches on that day. Many churches took the message seriously and closed their premises on that holy day. Then NOTHING happened on that Easter Sunday and it was a peaceful day. Now you can imagine the rest.
So, the reason is, Harin had thought it is far too bad to be true before such a message reaches his father, the security forces would have known. But there was no such announcement by the Government and felt his source of information cannot be that reliable and must be a fake manufactured anti-Christians. The Easter bombings could have been prevented, but it seems no one in the leadership wanted to.
The Easter bombings did not make sense. If there were angry Muslims, the anger would be directed at Sinhala Buddhists for the attacks on Muslims not Christians. The Muslims and Christians did not have any deep anger toward each other.
Hours after this terrorist attack, the talk was that “only” Nandasena could handle this and save the people, and then the opportunist Nandasena announces that he is running for President. How convenient.
There have been no other Muslim attacks, or signs of extremism . Muslims have been arrested without charges, and many discriminated. The attacks on churches did not make sense, and it was beautifully timed for Nandasena’s announcement that he will run for president.
Why are the Rajapaksa’s so adamant that no one should investigate further? Why are they reluctant to let the people know what they have found out? The guilty are always afraid.

There is no meeting between the Cardinal and Vaalaiththodam. I never believed in Vaalaiththodam or Cardinal. There is no argument about Gotabhaya’s involvement in the Easter Sunday Attack. All Rajapakasas were aware of it. I don’t write about junior Rajapaksas as they are non-entities to people. Recommendations of the PCoI is only to cover up the actual culprits.

Not only the Easter Sunday Attack, the Rajapaksas are even behind war crimes allegations against our war heroes. They have deliberately dragged Sri Lanka into the war crimes issue with an aim to use it as a tool to stay in power. Their inaction against this year’s UNHRC Resolution is a prime example. They even fixed the debate of the Port City Bill on May 18 and sold the souls of war heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country to pass the treacherous Bill.

Moreover, the Rajapaksas are using some scholars to distort our Sinhalese history. A prominent figure in archaeology is disseminating misinformation about our history, based on his own imagination or somebody else’s. For example Sirigiya. There is clear evidence in our history that Sigiriya was not built by Kasyapa and that the real Sigiri is not the rock that we call Sigiri today. It was the British who miscalled the current rock as Sigiri by design, to hide the fact that it was one of the pinnacles of Buddhist history.

Gotabhaya is a colossal failure. He took 14 days to issue any order regarding the ship X-Press Pearl. Out of the 14 days, the ship was on fire for 12 days!!!
As per media reports, brand-new container ship X-Press Pearl left Adani Hazira Port on May 15 and Arrived in Colombo Port on May 19 mid-night with a leaking TEU containing nitric acid.
With the acid leak, the ship sailed from Qatar to India, carried out some loading and unloading operations and then came from India to Colombo. There was no mishap until the ship arrived in Colombo. Both Qatar and India said to have refused the ship’s request to offload and reassemble the leaking container.
What I tried to point out is that there is no way the Sri Lanka Ports Authority was not aware of the leaking container when the ship arrived in Colombo Port.
On May 20, a fire erupted on deck of the ship while anchored in Colombo harbour waters.
It is possible that a fire occured in the leaking TEU carrying nitric acid. It was meant to happen at any point in the ship’s journey from Qatar to India to Colombo. But on the deck? This is where the Sri Lanka Police should investigate.

This is the second ship within a short span of time that caught fire in Sri Lankan water causing an inestimable ecological disaster.
Why in our waters? Because, Sri Lanka, run by corrupt rulers who are famous for their callous disregard for the environment, is the best sanctuary for owners of container ships carrying oil, chemicals or fuel to claim marine insurance and get away without paying or paying half for ecological damages if ships encounter any fires.
At the time of the fire, the ship, which was 3 months old, was carrying 1486 containers with 25 tons of nitric acid and several other chemicals.
The Sri Lankan government’s “make-a-killing style delay” in taking any action against the ship (could have easily ordered the owners to tow the ship away from our waters after evacuating the crew) has now caused Sri Lanka three massive ecological disasters;
1) Ocean, beach and river pollution caused by fallen x no. of containers carrying nitric acid, other chemicals, debris and hazardous waste from the ship.
2) Climate pollution caused by smoke, burnt nitric acid, other chemicals, fuel and plastic.
3) Ecological disaster caused by the sunken ship which was, according to international media reports, carrying an estimated 300,000 metric tons of heavy fuel oil in its tanks.

I am not an expert in marine disasters involving ships. But, using Navy divers to ascertain whether there is any oil leak is, ahem, elementary.
Please check with the owners of the ship whether X-Press Pearl is a single-skin-hull tanker or a double.
If it is a single-skin-hull, there is all the possibility of a massive oil leak. In such a case, Sri Lanka should immediately inform ship’s owners to do wet salvage to move the sunken ship out of Sri Lankan waters and separately charge $1 billion-a-day until the ship is removed from our waters.
If the ship has a double-skin-hull, and then as we have time, Sri Lanka may offer wet salvage and claim, in addition to charging $1 billion-a-day until the ship’s wreckage is removed.
Moreover, in addition to dry salvage provided by Sri Lanka, when claiming compensation from the ship’s owners for the 3 separate environmental disasters mentioned in my previous comment, damages caused to the tourism and fisheries industry should be calculated SEPARATELY.
By this time, we should have made all these 8 separate claims in writing.
In the meantime, people should be advised to avoid eating fish for at least two years.

NV, . it is too late to recognize it. . Balance sheet . 1) What have been achieved by GOSL since Nov 2019 is nothing. Who is Dr. Raja de Silva? No offence, but, I don’t remember reading anything written by him.
My source is directly connected with our Sinhalese ancestors.
The rock the British miscalled as Sirigi is not the actual rock which was known as Sigiri in the ancient time. Therefore, there is no way Kasyapa built what is called Sigiri today or the acutal rock which was known as Sigiri.
I don’t want to give all the details right now for obvious reasons.
Many of our ancient temples and Buddhist sacred sites are taking over by Malabaris who have Indian connections. The Rajapaksas are behind them. The latest example is Seruwila ancient temple and the sacred site.
Sigiri is only one example. Even the real name of Thurparamaya is not Thuparamaya.

Let us reflect in sadness, on the fact that so many were mass-murdered on a holy day in places of worship and not titillate on the statements by the Sri Lankan head of the religious group mostly affected by this attack. Do not forget that it was the call of His Eminence that prevented a bloody violence aftermath the 04/21 attacks. Everyone knows that in this country two important things can jolt a government of whatever political party. Firstly, it is hard cash. Akin to that is the ability to tilt the majority of Parliament from a specified level. (To Yahapalana it was the simple majority and for “Vision of the future” it is a two thirds majority). Officials! Oh! Buying them is cheesecake, as they would sell their own mother as a slave/prostitute. Although Lee Kuan Yew remained a simple man to his dying day, he ensured that the Ministers and Officials were well paid so that there is no corruption. Miscreants at the top? They were promptly punished. To this date the Sri Lankan authorities would prefer to be in the dark akin to the Biblical statement “NONE are so blind as those who WILL NOT SEE”.
