Following the unprecedented defeat for the ruling coalition at the recently concluded local government elections, it is likely that a broadly two-party system will evolve according to sources from the major political formations.
It was reported that Ranil Wickremesinghe was to request President Maithripala to sanction the forming of all-UNP government now that the ‘unity agreement’ between the SLFP and the UNP has expired.
Sources envisage a rapid decline of the SLFP which, under the leadership of President Maithripala Sirisena could muster less than 15% of the vote, with the majority joining the Joint Opposition and therefore the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) while those who for various reason will either not join the SLPP or will not be welcome siding with Ranil Wickremesinghe and the UNP.
Meanwhile the President has maintained a stony silence following the electoral debacle, but is expected to make ‘a special statement’ subsequent to ongoing feverish discussion with political confidantes.
However, sources close to Sirisena told Colombo Telegraph that he will do his best to stop such developments.
In the event that a UNP forms a government on its own the cabinet will necessarily be downsized to 30 as per the 19th Amendment to the Constitution where it can only exceed that number in a situation where there is a ‘National Government.’

Still UNP and broke away group from SLFP could make a big difference?.

Both are parties with policies poles apart. Any alliance between such parties cannot last long. Hence, their unholy alliance is fragile and can break any time. So, now its in the brink of breaking! As the UNP bas the largest number it should muster the support a few others to make the required majority to form the Govt. As some in the Party propose the UNP Leader should give it a thought so that a solely responsable Govt. can function with efficiency.
/
Champa / February 12, 2018
This speculation about taking over UNP was denied by the Presidential Secretariat. UNP is spreading bogus news together with SLPP to weaken the President.
.
If Ranil gets the power he will never share it with anybody but make sure the country is governed by UNP for the next 25 years. Not the country actually, only 1/3 of the country, as he will give 1/3 to Tamils and 1/3 to Muslims.
.
Mr. President, 45% of those who voted have showed their oppression to Ranil and UNP as all economic/political/social decisions were taken and implemented by them for the last 3 years. JO also supported them at times. You have nothing to do with UNP policies. In fact, it was you who stopped Ranil. I don’t understand why do you take the responsibility of what Ranil did? This vote is clearly against them.
.
On the other hand you spearheaded SLFP which was regarded as a party divided as 99:1 and you managed to get 1000 people elected from your side. SLPP and UNP had so many resources; such as power, money, various organizations including 52 and 100 something Parliamentarians, respectively. Most of your Parliamentarians were also supported SLPP overtly and covertly. Yours was a solo fight. Therefore, 1000 members is a great achievement for you which is 1/3 of the number of members what SLPP got (which is 3000 something) and ½ of the number UNP got. You should be happy.
.
It is UNP which is in turmoil by the results not you. Your position as the President is in tact. Forget about cheap popularity. You have started a new journey last year for the best interest of the country. The destiny of the county is in you hand. So act with responsibility.
/
Champa / February 12, 2018
Mr. President, you have two more years. On the surface it looks like everybody is on the other side, but it is not. Only 65% have cast their votes. 35% have boycotted the election, ½ of which is massive enough to turn the tables against people like Basil coming back to power. (I have no issue with MR.)
.
When water is muddled and unclear, let it clear by itself. This is not the end of the world. A party called SLPP won the majority of LG seats. So what? A single man from them is not in Parliament. Their buddy JO is from SLFP.
.
If any SLFP-MP tried to crossover to UNP, sack them all. Don’t show any mercy. People didn’t elect them to join UNP. If they want to join JO, who cares, let them go after striping their Ministerial portfolios and all positions in the party.
.
You should always prepare for eventualities. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. Then you can handle any unexpected situation super smoothly.
.
According to 19-A, UNP can’t form a government without SLFP, because the majority seats were won by UNP/SLFP. Only way Ranil can show the majority is by bribing SLFP MPP to join UNP. As Chairman/SLFP you have the power to sack them all. Power is with you, not with Ranil/SLPP/JO. Any move taken in haste will put the country in danger. This is not a time for power transition as UNP+undesirables will gain ground. (I’m not talking about MR. He is ok.) You have no other option other than continuing as it was. It is not your fault. 19-A was passed by every MP’s consent at the time but one. But this time, keep the power with you and control the tide! Good luck!

The story of muddied water is something every Buddhist should take as an example whenever there is a crisis. Wasn’t there bigger issues before too.
UNP tried to put the President in trouble just before the election at Brigadier’s issue. How could the Foreign Ministry take a decision to suspend his services based on a story/video on social media? When President is the Defence Minister and the Commander of the Army, the first thing the Ministry should have done was informed the President of the situation without keeping him in the complete darkness. It is apparent that they never thought the President would act so fast to revoke the suspension. I saw a video of some people even trying to use the matter to get votes to Hotu Pohottuwa. Some shuffling in the Cabinet is needed again. Ranil is the most insecure person here.

Oh… it is an insult to reply to your comment. But I will. Brigadier’s issue could have gone out of proportion had the President not intervened and revoked officer’s suspension promptly.. Look at big picture. It involved with LTTE diaspora and LTTE propaganda, it involved with diplomatic relations, it involved with politics, it involved with our Army. The video was partly doctored by repeating and stretching Brigadier’s gesticulation three times when he actually did only once.

Some shuffling in the Foreign Ministry, I mean. Who holds the power in the Ministry? Why didn’t Minister inform the President of this sensitive matter first? Looks like it is still Mangala who controls FM. That is why they ignored the President.

Champa,
“Why didn’t Minister inform the President of this sensitive matter first”?
What on earth has the President got to do with it? It is an internal appointment involving the Foreign Ministry and the FM decides. Get it? (I don’t think you ever will).
The UNP eared on many fronts and have and will pay for them all. It is important that we – if serious – back our preferences with logic than sentiment. You come across as someone who is anti-UNP, come what may. That is sad.

I didn’t see this comment, but my reply to Janaka above is applied to your first para too.
Of course I am anti-UNP. Ranil should be ousted once and for all DEMOCRATICALLY at the next election forcing him to retire.
Not only that I am anti-Rajapaksa too as Basil/MR/JO have a deal with Ranil going bloody against people’s mandate. People’s mandate in 2015 was for them to be anti-Ranil. People elected MR/UPFA/JO to Parliament to protect the country from Ranil. Now they are scheming to form a government with Ranil! If they think that this country belongs to them, they are mistaken. This is not “Bandumkara-land” or “Vayima’s-land” or “Rajapaksa-land.” This is our motherland which belongs to everybody.

It is not puppy love but a strong bond built on our love for the country. Hotu Pohottuwa is Basil’s. I never supported it. He took JO as his hostage and remote controlled them through MR and made them his slaves through Hotu Pohottuwa. They have a deal with Ranil (minus WW). They have no right to do that. I was against them since 2016, if you want to know. I don’t overly in support of the President too. From the beginning I am someone who was against abolishing the Executive Presidency. I support Executive Presidency for the sake of Sinhalese and I have said that repeatedly. I use anybody and everybody to defeat Ranil’s treachery against the country.. Be it Wimal, Mahinda or the President. I don’t care. President has the power to stop Ranil. When MR/JO failed me, I have no other option other than urging the President to do the needful to protect the country. I didn’t vote him. But I have a right tell him to protect the country. For that reason I don’t want him to let others to weaken him, especially Basil+Ranil combination.
Wimal is not my ‘previous heartthrob’. He is my all time. You seem to have woken up only after the election. Did you notice that people have chosen Bandumkara Hora and Vayima as their 1st and 2nd choices!

Mahinda Rajapakse has asked to set up a govt with the help of UNP. Ranil had said, If you become the PM this time, I will be the President next time. Something like that.
/
Champa / February 13, 2018
Basil/SLPP/JO had a deal with UNP from the beginning. Now it has come to the action mode.
I have no issue with MR. We all wanted MR to be the PM. But nobody wanted him to get together with traitorous UNP against which people fought all this time and form a government with them and be the PM.
What JO is demanding makes me laugh. A party called SLPP has won LG elections using MR’s popularity and now MR/JO who are from another party called SLFP is demanding the President to appoint MR as the PM or if not conduct fresh Parliamentary Elections based on another party’s victory.
JO made themselves a nonentity already. If the President to appoint MR based on LG results where SLPP is the winner, MR should become an SLPPer. Can he? He is still a member of the SLFP. While being SLFPers, JO’s demand for changes is hilarious.
If I am the President, I ask MR, “Mr. former President, if I am to appoint you as the PM based on LG election results where a party called SLPP won, please prove me you are a member of the SLPP. Please give me one good reason to appoint you as the PM based on the results of Basil’s and/or GL’s party? Suppose I appoint you as the PM, what would you do? You will get together with UNP, impeach me or abolish my position. What made you to think that I would offer my sword to you to cut my own neck. Do you think I am an idiot. Oh, please give me a break, machang former President. I don’t have a Sumanadasa so I will stay until 2020 and complete my tenure.”
Hello JO, you could do better. Want some tips?

Champa,
Can’t believe that unelected Ranil (only elected only by a small percentage of Colomboites at one time), is still sitting like a dictator running the show, in spite of the clear democratic mandate by the masses of the land. Truth is, Ranil and his UNP dogs undemocratically and sneakily placed all the country’s money into futuristic hedge funds in Singapore. That money is going to be very slow in maturing if it ever will (it was always a 100-year plan). Parliamentary and Colomboite oligarchs will sit tight securing their wealth – Sirisena included. Any withdrawal from the deal, and rich Tamils and Muslims will default on their loans, and put the country in financial crisis panic-mode, far worse than it has been for the past 2-3 years. That’s the crux of it. To be true to the masses of the land, we must let that money go. We can only hope that Rajapakse will manage to broker another deal via his former BRIC – any investments in that alliance would have certainly matured by now.

Election result APPEARS as a big victory for MR as it gathered all local authorities together in a day. If the elections were scattered like in the past, nobody would notice which party scored more. This time the whole result could be seen at a glance. There is no POLITICS here. Majority of the people did not know to whom they voted. They were in a trance to go and vote for MR failing to recall murders, disappearances, beatings, corruption…………………..during his regime.

All knew this going to happen, the day he took in all rotten ones, and got foul advise from them, especially Kiliraja and his Sirasa, it’s they killed all the good chances for the unity Government. When one sees news in the TV and news papers, one feels there is no government in the country. All negative stories about the government. If MR & cabals grab power, again all the journalists would be shot alive and all news outlets would be brought under their boots. Those SLFPers’ around him played a double game on him for their feet were on two boats. When there is trouble within ones house, those outsiders around it take good advantages of it. Now without being big pundits, let the UNP form a government and show their capabilities in the remaining two years period.

In the case of 19th amendment, bond Scam Ranil used NAIVE MY3 to set up five year govt for him. that is because of the 19th, Ranil cannot be removed. UNP can not make another govt with any one. The last three years have demonstrated the very poor performance of the present coalition government. It has been a dismal failure i.e. poor economic performance, severe and persistent corruption and dishonesty, persistent culture of impunity, rampant strikes, poor attendance at Parliamentary Debates and cunningly passage of legislation” without adequate debate and transparency. The law and Justice system seems to function at snails pace.

The Gamarala from Polonnaruwa has been taught a bitter lesson. Politics can take people from low places to high places. Upward mobility can place a man from the lowliest place to the highest in the land. Premadasa and Sirisena blessed with names usually given to domestic servants, had the good fortune to reach the very top. Both however lacked those other desirable human qualities like gratitude, humility, and basic decency. Their downfall was imminent.
Sirisena is left paddling his canoe in a vast ocean. The man although he was Secretary of a national political party lacked political clout or influence . His background determined that. A former gramma sevaka in normal circumstances would have entered the Rajapakse residence through the staff entrance. His impatience for power and lack of integrity made him betray his party, his mentors, and the support of the Sinhalese people. It has to be remembered that no self respecting Sinhalese will vote for the UNP The LG election results show that the UNP managed to retain some support only in Colombo, Kandy, and Galle because that is where the Tamils, and Muslims have populated in recent years. The UNP has lost the confidence of the majority community and has been made an outcast. It deserves its fate.

Now that the election is over, most politicians are worried about their own future, NOT about the nation.
How about, even this late, identifying and prosecuting all those who own wealth beyond their means. Most have not even declared their assets.
Else, whatever formations rule, corruption will increase.
The national debt, internal and external is increasing daily, but unwanted projects like the purchase of an old ship which will need refurbishment and will almost surely be a ‘white elephant’, are being planned.
All loosing state enterprises are carrying on, as usual.
Armed forces are getting more money, for what? – to continue suppression of the north east under a military regime?
We are sure to end up as a ‘broke’ banana republic, soon.

I note with interest that the alleged request of RW to form all UNP government matches with the request of MR for the SLFPers to leave the government. If so, who will be the leader of the Opp? Obviously, Sambandan Aiyya cannot continue in that post any more, if the PM himself maintains that the unity agreement is no more. The result then would be that any support from the alleged blue fellows to MY3 would dwindle to zero as they all will be one opposition and that MY3 will not like it nor would be the “Heaven” that arranged the marriage between MY3 and RW.

Ranil ruined everything for the entire UNP ,except a few of his blue eye boys in the party others suffered and are suffering for his sins.
He had enough funding from International resources ,instead of creating Social enterprises for all communities ,he picked and chose a small percentage among his blue eye boys relatives and friends and distributed it among them and its all a loss ,no gains .
Mahinda has now the opportunity to prove that ,he can use His contacts to create Social enterprises ,starting from Jaffna (a must ) without burdening the nation or tax payer ,or promising state jobs , create a system to generate their own income .UNP missed the golden. Opportunity ,they were only forever bragging about making My3 the President ,they took the whole mass for a ride (of cause not all Unpiers , Only the blue eye boys of Ranil ,the rest of unpehemr are victims ) and Mahinde must prove to the people he Will not let our natural resources be robbed and our future generations environment be destroyed for the benefits of a few by locals or foreigners , our resources are robbed in day light with no limit or conservation by a few. Another important message is Mahinda is yet responsible for the welfare of the armed forces , The Navy petrol shed was a very good project, Why not help the Armed force to get them selves trained overseas to get involved in running similar important sectors of the country ,they can even start good private transport for the people ,but without harming the other private transport business ,in a limited area and qty. Lot can be done .
Mahinda should just ignore silly and childish advice like trying to take back the SLFP leadership etc ,work and work ,but keep your buddies under control ,you are not obligated to them ,they are ,don’t let them give you dead ropes again .
There are two dangerous persons in your team beware of their dead ropes.

I think the reasons that this Govt. lost the election are
1. Price of coconuts went up to about 100 rupees.
2. Govt. promoted private medical colleges.
3. They insulted war heros by using soldiers for unsuitable jobs like cleaning gutters, cutting grass etc.
4. They attacked striking workers, university students, farmers etc. during their peaceful protests.
5. Govt. gave preference to Tamils and Muslims and neglected Sinhalese people.
6. Some of the deputy ministers attacked lady school teachers
7. Promoted sale of arrack, beer and moonshine etc.
8. Some of the UNP leaders insulted judges and lawyers.
9. Hospitals were crowded and govt. did not do anything to correct this.
10. Whole transport system is in kaous.

You are here all what Mara did during his rule as MS and Ranil did.

Both Maithrti and Ranil took the country for a ride accusing Mahinda Rajapajkse of all the dastardly crimes they could think of promising the people they will see the day he will be locked in jail. They snatched the election victory which was truly Mahinda Rajapkse’s.
In the end, all what people saw was, total inefficiency and lack of any vision. They tried to distract their inefficiency by their dramas showing Rajapakse and clan walking to FICD and in the end nothing materialized. They did not leave even the dead to rest in peace and used Thajudeen and Ekeniyagoda too for their politics and did not care two hoots for the families. Even just before the Local Government elections some so called suspects of Thajudeen murder were marched to FICD. Just wait and see nothing will happen thereafter only for a few to be marched to FCID again just before next elections!
Finally it was the present Government members who fell in the trap they made for Rajapakse clan, in the worst financial crimes in history the Bonds scam. They promised to have a zero corruption Government and promised any minister will be forced to resign at the first sign of wrong doing but nothing of that sort happened. Ravi Karunanayake and the Ranil Wickremasinghe should have resigned their posts and that never happened. Now we created history and the Sri Lanka flags flies high when we have a Prime Minister and Finance Minister who are bank robbers. Are we not feel proud of it! See the shame you brought to our country and did not demand letter of resignation or got them sacked. So you have bank robbers in your cabinet and they are using their privilege, and influence to shield them from being prosecuted.

I agree with Simon de Silva. UNP must invite criminals, murderers and thieves and form a govt with them. White vans should come back. This is what Sri lankan’s want. Give them

Two parties is fine as long as they are good parties. Everyone loves a good party, plenty of food, drinks, and everyone gets a slice of the cake.

Mahinda should do a complete judiciary clean up. Remove the blatantly partisan non performer the AG Jayasuriya. He may have perverted the course of justice by not allowing the Bond Commission lawyers to question Ranil and for providing Ranil the questions before hand. That was unprecedented, and may have enabled to hide Ranils guilt and complicity in the Bond Scam.
People in the minor judiciary like Surasena and Gehan Kulatunge have to be thoroughly investigated for their incompetence and blatant political partisanship.
Thewhat about Dilrukshi the Bribery Commissioner Who was remanding opposition members without an iota of evidence. Mahinda should arrange with GL Peiris to have special tribunals to deal with them .More stringent penalties like long periods of imprisonment, forfeiture of property and civic rights to be included.
A high powered Criminal Justice Commission should be established with adequate powers to deal effectively with people who undermine the sovereignty of the country.

A very good opportunity to get rid of those who claim to be from SLFP but forming SL Peraliya Pakshaya from SLFP for good. Build up SLFP with educated youth and face future elections. If they perform well it would be good for the party and people. At the same time introduce a filtering mechanism with the CID to check the background for any criminal links and increase vigilance.

I cannot understand why everybody thinking this as a great victory for for SLPP and MR. Just look at the turning out of voters, just 65%. At least 25% did not vote because they were disgusted with our political parties and politicians and beside some SLFP and UNP supporters voted for SLPP to teach the ruling party a lesson. There were no other good parties for them to vote and they will never vote to red shirt JVP because it was like LTTE at the beginning. So to win back the trust of people again they must immediately put into actions what they promised the people in 2015. If this happen in the next general election this SFPP going to get routed without a face.

We need SLFP, Pohottuwa is a temporary measure!
I hope Mahinda has someone to advise him that sooner or later everyone should cometogether in SLFP where Whisky madam has no role!
President Sirisena must not belong to none and must work tirelessly to tighten legislature to prevent further corruption. We shall see who stands up against these laws and people will make sure they will go home in next election!
Make the courts independent, Let the justice department handle all the cases based on evidence and sue every corrupt person and who misused power,
UNP is all about deregulation so they can steal, It is surrounded by a business mafia. Don’t let them rob the country no more.
Get your brother to resign, Stop favoring your family members, you know it is wrong!
Remove the UNP IGP foremost, He is a shame to the justice system, That is where you should start!
There is a moment here for us to bring the democracy we want with rule of law!
Time for you to show some character, If you really have one,
I don’t believe you have one and nor 49% of the population either, Make them believe wrong!
Do something for the country, Ven Sobhitha will be happy!

May I further ask the logic behind forming a UNP only government ? You don’t have a majority ,, what kind of message is Ranil sending to the people ? By kicking out all the coalition partners is he expecting them to bend and bow to Malik ? Who is the major cause of everything? I hear Kabir is going to be replaced ,it is not Kabir ,it is Malik who needs a standing sack .get rid of him.and half the problem us solved .
I think The President has a responsibility to change the Head of the government and why not consider Mangala as PM ?
Ranil seem to be purposely pushing the entire nation to suicide .
Though Sajith would be a good choice ,I still feel its a bit too early for him,
Need someone with more experience, whoever it is The President must make a careful analysis , on second thoughts, I think it is safer to extend the Agreement of coalition government ,it would always be like the song of Shirley Bassey ,never, never ,the love-hate will remain ,that is okay, better than a complete suicide .
Other option is to dismiss the government and appoint a caretaker government( if legally possible ) appoint a PM and select a few of each party as ministers and go for general election in a year .
The President must do what is correct ,not politically correct ,he should not allow anyone to bully him.
He need to understand this , it is extremely unfair to put the people through such despair. .
