Despite being embroiled in a Rs. 11 billion bribery scandal, the Colombo Chief Magistrate today granted ex-Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa permission to travel to China.

The Magistrate granted Rajapaksa permission to travel China from 5th to 30th October 2016 to attend a defence seminar. Rajapaksa was however imposed an additional surety bail of Rs. 5 million, with the lifting of the travel ban till end of this month.
On September 30, the Colombo Chief Magistrate granted bail to Rajapaksa, and seven others over their involvement in a bribery scandal amounting to Rs. 11.4 billion in connection to Avant Garde. Despite granting bail, the Magistrate imposed a travel ban on the suspects.
This is the second Rajapaksa in less than a week to seek permission to travel overseas. Last week, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s second son, Yoshitha was granted permission to travel overseas for treatment after he sustained a sports injury. Yoshitha is currently out on bail over a money laundering case at the Carlton Sports Network.
