De Facto Chief Justice Pieris Agrees To Step Down

De Facto Chief Justice Mohan Pieris has agreed to step down from the post, Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne told journalists in Colombo a short while ago.

Dr. Senarathne said that de facto CJ Pieris had informed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe that he would step down from the post soon.

Mohan Pieris was appointed as CJ by the Ex-President Mahinda Rajapaksa after the illegal removal of the CJ Shirani Bandaranayake.

Serving Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake had not been removed as per proper procedure, and therefore, there was no vacancy. “Parliament had not passed an appropriate resolution – a proper address to the President seeking the removal of the Chief Justice on the basis of the findings of the Parliamentary Select Committee. What it passed was an old one which had set the impeachment process in motion.” TNA MP, lawyer M.A.Sumanthiran told media.

Whoever appointed to the office will have to start the repairing job of rebuilding people’s TRUST AND CONFIDENCE IN THE JUDICIARY, whilst strictly observing the role of the Judiciary, as the independent watchdog of the people with due regard to the principle of separation from the EXECUTIVE and LEGISLATURE.

Dear De facto Chief Justice Mohan Pieris,

Thank you foe stepping down, but why did you become a MaaRa shill?
Mahinda was told he would be defeated

Please retire. Watch cricket games.Take a walk, grow some vegetables, and do whatever you want, except becoming a shill and white-washer for MaRa, the Actor.

Your boss was given retirement by the people.

So we could see all three 43rd, 44th and 45th in action in as many days.

Has he got any plea bargain in exchange of this decision?. It will be a travesty if he gets away with all he had done up to 9th morning. Just imagine what could be the fate of CBK and MS if MR had won the race while this guy was still in the position.

Good riddance of bad rubbish– Mohan Pieris brought utter shame on the Sri Lankan judiciary. Let him be the last of those who sold, succumbed and prostituted the Judiciary to the Executive instead of being independent.

    Is this confirmed?

This silly fool suggested the day after the election that terrorist KP had fled the country.

That guy still in Killinochi (though not arrested yet).

Is Killinochi so far away to go and arrest KP? I thought India wanted to question him and also an Interpol arrest warrant is out for his arrest?

    Rajitha and his credibility !!

Happy to note that some “wrongs” are being corrected. But the wrongs done to the poorest of the poor, eg. Jeyakumari Balendran and her daughter and likes, have to be corrected too in the same spirit and speed!!

Someone should be appointed to look into these poor innocent peoples problem without delay!!

Great to hear that Mr Chief Justice Mohan Peiris is going to step down. He has already destroyed all the time honoured and tested principles in relation to justice and judiciary. He tarnished the image of the Sri Lankan Judiciary. Not only the legal paternity but also general public still remember the great judges we had, like Justices Basnayake, H.N.G Fernando, T.S Fernando, R.S Wanasundara and Mark Fernando. I wonder how Mr Mohan Peiris will be remembered by the legal paternity and the general public in this country for the years to come. One thing can be assured that Mr Peiris has left nothing sacred and honoured but only disgust and infame.

MR never called Ranil , it was Eran Wickramaratna who informed the imminent blood bath which was going to unfold on that fateful day , consequently Ranil intermediate and rescued MR from a Gadafi style chaos.

As tradition demands, Justice K.Sripavan who is the most senior judge, needs to be appointed as Chief Justice.
He has acted for the Chief Justice, in the past.

Rubbish seniority not matter at all what matters is uncompromising stance of integrity under whatever the circumstances it may be. Here Sri Pawan has fatally failed.

He melt down like a candle and ratified Mohan Pieris’s ‘determination’ on 18th Amendment referred to Court by President Rajapakse. They denied people of this country of their right to raised objections, even the request made by Bar Association was ignored.

This is good enough to dump this man to the dustbin.

      koloppama,
The entire supreme court approved the 18th amendment.
      Hence, all are equally ‘guilty’.
Of these, Sripavan is most senior.
Should a NEW supreme court be appointed?

Oh Rajitha! Complete U turn. You along with Wimal Kebarawansa ridiculed Shirani B as members of the Kangaroo Court appointed by MR.

Finally, we hope the present CJ will resign immediately to give confidence to the public about the independence of the judiciary. This is a good news for implememtation of good governance.

However, If as announced he does not resign what next? Will they start the process of impeachment?

    As public we are anxious?

“Dr. Senarathne said that de facto CJ Pieris had informed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe that he would step down from the post soon.”

Why ‘soon’, step down now. Do you intend to do a bit more damage before you go. My advice to you Mohan Pieris is to jump before you are pushed.

    Shameless ingratiate.

As a former employee of the water board, I still remember the time that Ranil was in charge. We never received any letters or other forms of requests to employ political favorites from Ranil. Under his guidance the Water Board started to make profits for the country.

Later under MR, it continued to make greater profits, but this time it was for the politicians and their cronies – not for the country.

I remember the time under MR when an offer of aid from Netherlands was retracted. The reason: The politicians were asking for grafts for the offer to be accepted!!! What an irony. They withdrew the offer completely and said that if they accepted such things their society also would be infected with the virus of corruption.

Tamil news reports (Tamilwin.com 22-01-2015 03:42:08) say that the Mohan Pieris’ spokesman Wijeratne Kodipili has denied the story that Pieris will step down. Friends say the UGC was also asked to resign and they refused.

I was watching derana newspaper readings by Chatura in the morning today the 22nd Unlike Mulpituwa in Swarnawahini, Chatura has his twisted comments. His comments are generally biased. Today he gave excerpts of Gamanpilla’s interview but he omitted the section where he says that he doesn’t remember CJ being present. That is amnesia or early onset of dimentia, What is important is that Chatura conveniently leaves out that conversation. But he should not give biased opinions.

I think there is a great danger here. The illegal CJ would not step down. He and the Rajapakshas are waiting for the EP to be abolished and once it is done the whole government and the country becomes unstable and vulnerable to innumerable number of problems and conspiracies. The Rajapakshas would surely step in and try to snatch power. This is a very precarious situation and the My3 government must wake up from the good governance daydream. Of course good governance must be established but in doing so they must not unravel the victory the people achieved by getting rid of the obnoxious MR.

The EP must take the matters to his own hands and use the powers vested in him. We need a JR here in fact. First clean up the mess in the country, drag out the corrupt CJ, all the thieves, plunders etc. and bring all of them to the book including MR, GOTA etc. And once this has been done he can proceed to keep the promises.
