Some 30 Rajapaksa henchmen and close associates appointed as diplomats during the previous regime have been recalled with immediate effect.
Among those who have been recalled are non-career diplomats who have been appointed to the service without fulfilling the required criteria as well as those who have been serving in a single station for a prolonged period.
Among those who have been recalled is the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia who has been serving in the station for close to eight years now.
One of the pledges made by the President during the campaigning period was to free the diplomatic service of political influences.
The process was due to begin just a few days after the election of the new President. However, it was delayed due to the arrival of the Pope and the External Affairs Minister’s visit to India.
Ansar / January 24, 2015
Good Move, but let it not be a recall of RAPAPAKSHE HENCHMEN and appointment of MAITHRI/RANIL HENCHMEN.
As suggested before as well, there should be a Professional Competent Authority to screen and wet potential applicants before appointment.
All postings should be learned and experienced men in whatever spheres of appointments. The culture of appointments to various spheres in the government has virtually eroded the belief in securing jobs for the potentially qualified men and women. This has led to students not even opting to study in the respective fields, as all their hard earned qualifications are a waste of time and unqualified political henchmen are appointed to top posts.
These concerns should be given due consideration and reverted immediately and addressed seriously for the betterment of our country.
Hope to see changes under MY3 PALANAYA for a prosperous and cultured Sri Lanka, and what a country it would be.
THANKS GNAYASARA for making it at least remotely possible.

Glannie Pieris / January 24, 2015
Now it seems the old game has begun.Shenuka senevirtane the former Foreign Ministry Secretary has managed to get a a transfer to Paris, even after she lost the secretary job.She is supposed to have met new government big wigs in working this out. Also doing the same was Majintha Jayasinhe who has demanded a posting in China, his 3 rd in same country where his girl friend lives. . Both , though belonging to the Foreign Service had openly worked for Mahinda Rajapakse’s 2015 campaign , openly flouting Administrative Regulations that expressly prohibits it.Both were openly close to Sajin de Vasss Gonaa
Meanwhile it seems almost certain that PM Amsa also of the Foreign Service who fell foul of the MR regime, after been the ONLY officer to have openly worked in MR’s 2010 election campaign is to get a top protocol jab in the Foereign Ministry. Also MR relative and acolyte, Prasad Kariyawasam, who secured the ambassador’s job in USA mourning MR’s regime, even after retiring, is to be retained .
Are these developments in keeping with the ethics of the new administration in which Friday Forum cheif and former diplomat Jayantha Dhanapala is paying a big role.?Whom are they trying to fool? These fellows are all the same.
/
Point of View / January 24, 2015
Why a posting for Kshenuka ? Is she a friend of Chitranganee Wagiswara ??? Kshenuka is an insult to foreign service and all other women in the foreign service.
Will the French accept her ? We need to put pressure on the French Foreign Ministry – bombard them with everything we have on her.
This is not yahapalanay ! What is Anura Dissanayake doing ????
/
William Sacks / January 24, 2015
Dear Glannie, Amsa and Prasad are career diplomats and they have done a good job in the past. Amsa was in London and Prasad was in Delhi. That is the type of diplomats we require and Rajapakse/Sirisena/Ranil cronies. I do not know whether Kshenuka is sent to Paris yet, but what else they can do with her. No point of keeping her in the ministry doing nothing. At least get some work out of her for the salary she is paid. Except for her manipulative ways she is not a bad diplomat.
/
Glannie Pieris / January 24, 2015
Dear William
You say Amsa is a good diplomat. Then how is that he came down to Colombo at Government expense and worked in his home town in the East in MR’s 2010 election campaign? Is doing such unethical things part of been a diplomat? As a reward Amsa got to be Ambassador in Belgium.By sucking up to MR, Amsa served abroad for 11 years CONTINUOUSLY. Perhaps that is ethical too.
Prasad Kariyawasam performed horribly in India , nearly being banished from there for making unwarranted. Remarks on Tamil Nadu politics. He is excellent at playing to the gallery and for this was sent to USA.Just closely follow his English grammar and u will see his excellence”.In India his English was corrected by a lady officer .Now. He is said to be Colombo trying to get close to the new administration. He is said to be desperately trying to get the Maheshini Colonne transferred to Washington.
Dear William, I agree that there are some very upright, honest and able officials in the Foreign Ministry .But Amsa and Kariyawasam are definitely NOT among them. These 2 survive on patronage of powerful people whom they adroitly cultivate.Just make inquiries from the Career guys and find out for yourself.

Why does the island need sooooo many diplomatic missions??
It’s cheaper and convenient for the ministers and MP’s to enjoy the luxury of honorary consulates as some in the SARC and EU- speaking to them privately they show what they spend on the fancies of MP’s and Ministers while DJ tells us about the Cold Blooded Skin Heads of Atta prikana.
The world is getting smaller the west is cutting expenses and imports.
We have EU, ASEAN,
Why so many to smuggle wriggle and giggle. Talk of senior career diplomat lying through his teeth for GL & Passa and finally Hindia requesting him to be removed- now he is the man in the USA- liar called so many sitting government MP’s as terrorist.

Please consider the following eminent persons
Sajin Vass, Dayan, Nonis, Shvendra de Silva, ………… as it happens in this island every aspect is governed by revolving doors, old boys network, who is connected to whom, political influence money could buy, ……..
Since Dayan was campaigning for Sajith Premadasa for quite some time the housing minister could put a word or two to give him a diplomatic posting. If ever it happens, that would be the end of civilisation as we know it.

Steps should be taken to do away with the prevailing
political culture of “self service” of elected MPs.
Politician must only be another public servant and
nothing else.People who flock around politicians for
their needs should be discouraged through eradicating
corruption and favoritism in the public sector.People
must elect representatives who will reform public
services for their convenience.First of all the
parliament must be cleansed.MY3 and RW must put
forward simple, people friendly and generous candidates
who are true public servants for the next general
election.Otherwise, the going trend is,the JVP is
truly becoming unbeatable as far as good governance is
concerned.People are not very far from distancing
themselves of traditional politics that is just

Why only 30 diplomats should be recalled, London itself has got more than 30 to be recalled. There are more than 50 staff but only three are career diplomats. That is also recently. Before Thalpahewa joined London there were only two. Some of the staff were in SL during election time. What was Sepala Ratnayake doing in SL during election time? Former President’s physician’s wife is in London, doing what? Educating children! Bandula Padmakumara’s daughter doing what. Some of these diplomats are doing what clerical service recruits used to do in the embassies, signing passports, others doing nothing. This work could be done by the other officials, you do not need Minister Councillors getting thumping salaries to sign a passports. Visas are done online and renewals and new issues done in Sri Lanka. Number of staff in London can be easily reduced by half without affecting any of the services provided. This is robbing public money.
Rani Bulathwala who was carrying and waving flags in London is in Rome. There is no cadre for a deputy there. So called lawyer did not have any cases after the UK govt stopped legal aid. Along with the Ambassador there are only six in Rome and there is another deputy ambassador. Why? SLFP branch president in London!
One in Israel, what is his qualification to become a diplomat? He is from Weeraketiya? Again London SLFP branch president.More than that when MR became the Prime Minister he started DA Rajapakse Foundation in London. No disrespect to DA, but he was an unknown quantity in SL political scene.
List is endless. Cannot give everything in one comment. Hope new administration will recall all unnecessary staff and stick by Kadiragamar ratio 70:30. But that 30 also should be qualified capable people. People do not expect to fill these posts with UNP or Sirisena loyalists but with qualified, capable people. There are enough who do not go behind anybody but straight forward knowledgeable individuals.
(70:30 also may be difficult as there were no recruits from a competitive exam recently)
Whole Foreign Service needs to be overhauled!
