Former chairman of the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) and leader of the Communist Party DEW Gunasekera has accused Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and several other UNP members of conspiring against COPE to clear former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran’s name from several charges including his alleged involvement in two Treasury bond scams.

Gunasekera has claimed that several UNP Members were working in a manner giving scant regard to COPE, while also working in a conspiring manner which can affect the outcome of the COPE decision against Mahendran.
According to him, some members of the UNP which is the main party in the coalition government have made statements to the effect that the Auditor General does not have the necessary qualifications to handle certain matters including releasing an independent report on the bond scam.
“It is the government that appointed him to that position, so why are they questioning about his qualification now. These are all excuses to help Mahendran go scot free despite his wrongdoings,” the former COPE chairman said.

normal course and let the SC decide as to who is right and who is
wrong, w/o fighting the case on communal lines through COPE.

It is silly on the part of UNP COPE Committee members to question the qualifications of the Auditor General when he is the Government accredited Head, of the Audit Dept. Experienced and mature officers are much more smarter and brainier than some of the officers with paper qualifications. If you need Economists and other financial specialists to pass judgement on a matter like this which is a simple case of ‘vested interest’,’ethical behavior and professional conduct’rather than tangible evidence, do they expect FCID, CID and Bribery Commission officials also to have expertise in money laundering, exchange control violations, bribe taking etc.to investigate financial crimes committed during MR regime? Further no UNP parlimentarian has gone on record questioning the qualifications/expertise of Auditor General or his staff when Audit Reports were submitted in the recent past on numerous abuses of Ministers of MR Regime including complicated hedging deal, coal power tenders, corruption at Mihin Lanka, Srilankan air etc. Nimalasiri
