Dividing The Sri Lanka Freedom Party

By Mahinda Rajapaksa

Mahinda Rajapaksa

In January 2015, a new leader took over an undivided SLFP. I made no attempt to retain the leadership of the SLFP at that time because of the need to preserve the unity of the party through which all of us had engaged in politics. Both I and the party rank and file believed that no harm would befall the party under the leadership of an individual who had been a party member for four decades and its General Secretary for 13 years. Even though many members of the opposition felt we should have contested the 2015 Parliamentary election separately, we contested that election under the SLFP and the UPFA because of our desire to protect the party. Even at that time, we did have serious misgivings about the new SLFP leader’s conduct.

The moment he became president, the present leader of the SLFP gave the Prime Ministership to the UNP which had only 43 Members of Parliament. Though this sent shockwaves through the membership of the SLFP, there was  the expectation that things would change once he became the leader of the SLFP. But that too did not happen. Even after becoming the leader of the SLFP and the UPFA which had a two thirds majority in parliament, the new SLFP leader only used this majority to keep the UNP government in power. Furthermore, he deprived the SLFP and the UPFA of a political advantage they had by dissolving the Local Government institutions that were mostly controlled by the UPFA. If these had not been dissolved, they would have been of immense help to the UPFA at the 2015 August Parliamentary elections. Even in that backdrop, we contested the 2015 August Parliamentary election under the UPFA because of the need to prevent the division of the SLFP. There was also the expectation that it would be possible to extricate the new SLFP leader from the clutches of the UNP.

However due to the actions taken by the new SLFP leader when it became clear that the UPFA was poised to win the 2015 August elections, any hopes that the party rank and file may have reposed in him were dashed. By writing an open letter to me just days before the poll saying that he would not appoint me as the Prime Minister even if the UPFA won the election, he was saying in effect that even if the SLFP won, he would hand over victory to the UNP. When it appeared that even that statement could not stop us from winning, he sacked the General Secretaries of the SLFP and the UPFA just 48 hours before the polling began to show the voter how determined he was to see the defeat of the SLFP. After the UNP won the 2015 August Parliamentary election with the help of the SLFP leader, the latter then got a group of SLFP parliamentarians to prop up the new UNP government.

All the UPFA parliamentarians elected at the 2015 Parliamentary election were elected on a platform that opposed the 8 January 2015 conspiracy. All of them contested that election in opposition to the yamapalana government. It is a matter of profound regret to me that more than 30 SLFP members elected to parliament on that basis have decided to prop up the UNP government at the invitation of the SLFP leader. However, 52 UPFA parliamentarians continue to sit in the opposition in accordance with the anti-yamapalana mandate they got at the 2015 August Parliamentary election.

From time to time during the past two years, SLFP parliamentarians in the opposition have been removed from their electoral organiser positions by the SLFP leader. Removing popular figures in the SLFP from their electoral organiser positions is a move calculated not to strengthen the SLFP but to ensure the victory of the UNP.  Among the opposition SLFP parliamentarians sacked from their electoral organiserships are Prasanna Ranatunga, Bandula Gunawardane, Geetha Kumarasinghe, Gamini Lokuge, Sanath Nishantha, Piyal Nishantha, Johnston Fernando, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Keheliya Rambukwella, Pavithara Wanniarachchi, Rohitha Abeygunawardene, Jagath Balasuriya, C.B.Ratnayake, Janaka Bandara Tennakoon, Lohan Ratwatte, Anura Vidanagamage, Salinda Disanayake, Mohan Silva, Tikiri Adikari, D.B.Herath and Kanchana Wijesekera.

In the latest round of purges, Janaka Bandara Tennakon has been sacked with no account taken of the immense services rendered by him to the SLFP in the Matale district. His father T.B.Tennakoon was not only a founding member of the SLFP but also a key figure in the political revolution of 1956. The services rendered to the SLFP and the country by the late Anuruddha Ratwatte have been ignored when the SLFP leader sacked his son Lohan Ratwatte from his electoral organisership.  Because of the SLFP leader’s actions, the extent to which the SLFP electoral organisership has been devalued can be seen in the manner Dullas Alahapperuma, JanakaWakkumbura and Rohana Dissanayke voluntarily resigned from their SLFP electoral organiserships. Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon resigned from his Central Province ministerial portfolio without a second thought, in protest against the removal of his father from his electoral organisership.

The party leader has to take the entire responsibility for causing a split in the SLFP by removing the most popular individuals in the party from their electoral organiserships. Sacking SLFP parliamentarians who have refused to prop up the UNP government from their electoral organiserships while retaining the SLFP parliamentarians who are propping up the UNP government, is a move calculated to strengthen the UNP, not the SLFP. Parliamentarians of the SLFP who have remained in the opposition in accordance with the mandate they received at the 2015 Parliamentary election have been sacked from the SLFP central committee as well. However nothing has been able to prevent this dysfunctional government that is kept in office under the patronage of the SLFP leader, from declining in popularity with each passing day.

If the government cannot govern effectively even with a group of SLFP parliamentarians propping them up, the SLFP members serving in the government should ask themselves why they are still on board this sinking ship. The SLFP may get members of ethnic and religious political parties from the north and east that never vote for the SLFP or celebrate May Day to attend their rallies with free sightseeing trips thrown in as an incentive, with the hope of bamboozling the people. However the indefinite postponement of the local government elections show that the government does have a realistic assessment of their popularity at this point in time.

I wish to pledge once again that I will give leadership to the opposition forces and work to defeat this government in accordance with the mandate I received in 2015. I invite all members of the SLFP who are against their party being turned into a tail of the UNP and the members of the public who are against the anti-national actions of this government to attend the anti-government May Day rally at Galle Face and thereby send a forceful message to this dysfunctional, repressive government.

You S.., never allowed the New Chairman of SLFP to function independently, poking your two cents from Medamulana due to power greed.

Now don’t talk cock. You are the single most reason for the break up of SLFP, just like you blew the opportunity of bringing in lasting peace after winning the war, you blew another golden opportunity to re vitalize the party and move forward.

We were all grateful to you for playing your part for winning the war, but since then you blew all good chances to capitalize due to your high headedness and pampering your family for your survival. They acted even worse than you culiminating in your downfall.

Now just mark your days in Medamulana, till the day comes when every one of you will pay the price for all your crimes including murders and state plundering.

    Happy Living.

As Asath Saley, evidently pointed out, this man Mahinda Rajapalshe could abuse billions of tax payers funds but without any shame, had he been reelected, .. all these he had abused for his plastic surgeries, botox injections etc.. this man is wolf in sheepish cover. Even today, who is real MAHINDA RAJAPAKSHE – and his true colours are out reveal.

        Mahinda’s ghostwriter types:

“I wish to pledge once again that I will give leadership to the opposition forces and work to defeat this government in accordance with the mandate I received in 2015.”

What mandate this man is talking about?

        What is he moaning about.

Could you not tell him that he should not stay in the SLFP which is part of the government. SLFP cannot and should not be allowed to have the cake and eat it.

This man should drag himself out of the comical JO and join the alternative comical GL Peiris’s Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (Sri Lanka People’s Front)if he hates SLFP and its present leader. There is already an open invitation from GL to MR.

        What is he waiting for?

It is to sing some poems, Kavi.

      MaRa MaRa ChaTu MaRa
      MaRa MaRa AmaNa MaRa
      MaRa MaRa HoRa MaRa
      MaRa MaRa DhushaNa MaRa

Mara (Sanskrit: मार, Māra; Chinese: 天魔; pinyin: Tiānmó; Tibetan Wylie: bdud; Khmer: មារ; Burmese: မာရ်နတ်; Thai: มาร; Sinhalese: මාරයා), in Buddhism, is the demon that tempted Gautama Buddha by trying to seduce him with the vision of beautiful women who, in various legends, are often said to be Mara’s daughters.

No I dont think DJ may have wrttien this, since his write up are refered by references to show off his academic credentials. DJ is no fit to write good and simply written articles. Instead, he can twist the folks with his malicious and devious thoughts. There he is the top man.. I would say.

Certainly MR is not capable of writing such an article neither can he articulate such thoughts eloquently in Sinhala. He is good for street type talk only.

What rubbish this man has been bubbling even today ?

The party was already broken into pieces the unique and abusive manner you FORMER president handled it. It has turned out to be a banner of thakkadiyaas of all high grade under your leadership while the decent folks including your predecessor Ms CBK and several other seniors had been thrown away from party performances. You should be the person to take the responsiblity to have violated the decent priniciples of SLFP generated by its decent leaders. Had SWRD been alive, he would never have been allowed you the like men to lead the party that way. Unfortunately, the long held war created a misery inthe country giving the entrance any uneducated, unclutred men being rallied round under your lead to destroy it to the core.
Those who know it from the begining on, you had no whatsoever decent principles, even if your first term allowed you to eliminate LTTE terror within the bourdaries of the country, but it was a collective action of various forces in the country. However, Rajapakshe Proxy-local media prostitutes, painted it hard as any easy targets who are the rural folks making over 70% of the populace would be fooled just for gaining and grabing their votes. Nothing else. You and your rule in the post war scenario, abused the state and its funds, as no other leader making srilanken economy is no second to that of Greece. However, thanks to various fearless leaders and supporters to them got together to save the country from your mad hand, saved the nation on the 8th Jan 2015.
Today, incumbent president reiterated that the country s destructive economy left by your administration has been recoved and taken to right tracks. Their basic asterity steps taken by Prez and PM have guided them to achieve their goals, of course except the scandals such as BOND scam of CB, which is now being under investigation. However, the latter investigation or the damage must not bury the high profile money laundering acts deliberately carried out by you government. Alone the billions looted from srilanken airlines is sufficient to prove your skills in the finanicial management. So please now let the current duo to go through until they can assure the aims set by them… not forgetting punishing you and your men for the high profile corruption charges.

What does Mahinda Rajapakse think of himself? It appears he thinks that there is no one in SL who can govern other than himself. He was in a denial mode when he was the President and even after loosing the election he still remains in a denial mode. What is the reason for this situation? In my opinion he is first worried about himself and his family being sent to galore for stealing money and taking bribe. He has the following of those who have no voter base or significantly small voter base who cannot function on their own. He uses these puppets and they dance according to his tune. He continuously creates trouble for the Yahapalana Government without giving a fair chance for them to govern. I think the time is right for President Sirisena to appoint Sarath Fonseka to take over law and order. Fonseka is a true match to Mahinda.

It is also sad to note that some TV and newspapers give prominence to Mahinda and his puppets the JO. Its also sad when news from these jokers are published the comment section is disabled. This started with Ada Derena and now I note that even Daily Mirror is doing the same. Sad state of affairs.

      Lanki,
it is just those TV senders that give prominence to MR and his magical politics came into being by the black money collected by Rajapakshe rascals.

Dherana for example would do anything and everything for Rajaakshes political survivial… that is sad but even today cheap journalists do the job not thinking twice. LIsteners and Dherana fans rally round to boast Rajapakhe mantra.
Hiru is no second to Dherana, had there been strict laws against drug trafficking, they the Hiru men would not have raised their head. Both senders are beyond all ethics and morals, however, various teledrama and other programs being telecasted by the abusive senders seem to be balancing them not being cornered by people.
These media prostitutes would not have any respect about any kind of clean culture. That is the saddest reality of Rajapakshe made revolution.

    Mr Mahinda Rajapakse

How pathetic a former President can be to stoop to the level whining & whinging? You are obviously pissed off with MS for not endorsing you as his PM, which shows you have no shame, trying to get back to power by any means, even under your own Minister when you were the supreme leader. You had the golden opportunity to take SL forward when you ended the war, instead, your greed, corrupt nature & cronyism took over & the country slid deeper down the slippery slope of economic disaster. You may be deluded in thinking that you are the best man for the job but how any rational person would ever think of voting for you is beyond my comprehension.

Follow the example of David Cameron, & just in case you are not aware, Cameron resigned from being the PM before his term was up because he took the responsibility for the Brexit & did not want to lead the country after the people voted against his beliefs. He did not want even to continue as a humble MP after being the PM, which shows he is a man of principals. Probably his breeding & Eaton education contributed to his values but obviously your family & education has failed to make you a person with integrity. So why don’t you enjoy your retirement now with all the ill gotten wealth you have collected, which would keep, not only you, but for generations to come in great comfort?

Mara is the most corrupted leader in the history of Sri Lanka and what you have written is non-sense. People know that you pay DJ and a few others for writing things in English. How can you write in English without the ability form a couple of correct sentences in English. What you did during your 10 year reign of terror and corruption is not a secret. Here is brief snapshot of your despicable record:

    1. Soliciting sex from girls of the families that lost their loved ones due to Premadasa Terror campaign in exchange of your service as a human rights lawyer in 1980s

    2. Raping girls in villages from down south on the promise of jobs

    3. Stealing $800 million of Tsunami funds through fake NGO called Helping Hambantota set up with assistance from Willie Gamage and depriving poor families of their right to rebuild their lives devastated by Tsunami

    4. Taking 19 billion US dollars as commissions from Chinese government corporations through white elephant useless development projects such as Hambantota Harbour, Airport, and southern expressway

    5. Putting Sri Lanka economy into an endless misery by taking high interest loans from China and pocketing in 40% of that money

    6. Nurturing an unprecedented culture of corruption and political victimization with immunity

    7. Killing and attacking journalists, judges, innocent civilians for 10 years

    8. Appointing an uneducated GoTa as defence head and stealing the credit of ending the 30 year war from SF, the true hero who led the final war against LTTE

    9. Making a synthetic lawyer of an idiotic son who couldn’t even pass his GCE (OL)

    10. Killing the most famous rugby player on behalf of another moron son

What noble thoughts from this crooked, demented imbecile. Still hoping to come back to power with statements like this which are laughable. The idiot thinks that he can still fool the masses who are now fully aware of the corruption, murders and abductions that took place under his crooked and warped leadership. Look at the bunch of guys who have teamed up with him- not one of them is honest and they are all being investigated for frauds and murder and rapes that were committed. MR is only interested in protecting his crooked family and rougish and thuggish colleagues and is not one bit interested in doing anything for the citizens of this country. An absolute disgrace is he, still ranting and raving like a dog whose testicles have been immersed in petrol. What a patriot this guy is, starts and ends with his family of thieves. Another poor article written by the demented professor and DJ who are hoping to have some benefits by siding with this crook.

Both SLFP and UNP are full of theives and pests. The list of those who will not contest in the SLFP ticket are all well kniwn thieves. Some jumped the ship inorder to escape charges.

Both SLFP and UNP need to disintegrate if they sre not restructured or, renewed. None of them can win an elecction alone means, they are bankrupt parties.

Sri lanka is better off with a new “TEA PARTY”.

Every reed feels it as a redwood when the breeze on the river bank goes for rest. When it starts back to breathe again, the reeds bend their back and eat the earth. The Joint comedy club, who could not dislodge TNA, Kola Bear of the SinhaLE Wild Life Sanctuary, time and aging, is bragging their fame. These guys are now wagging, earlier barking, but never were able to bite after 2015 election. They slept with America to win the war and slept with China to fill the bank till.

“Kaliyana Chanthadiyil maapillaiyai maranthu pauchchu”. (Forgot the bridegroom in the rush of the wedding.) He is the SLPP leader after all. A Coolie might get more respect than GLP his in SLPP. That is why GLP forgot his name who was sacked from the Party, but remembering only the organizers in his list of those sacked by New King. “

SLFP members serving in the government should ask themselves why they are still on board this sinking ship. Is that a question? Why Denish is breaking coconuts to Paththini Deviyo? Didn’t Sumanadasa Abeygunawardena have answered to that question already? It always depends on the position of the planets. Earlier the Planet 18A, which was in Uchcha, now in Neasha . Now 19A is in Uchcha. That is where minister posts are rolling. One has to make you offering only to 19A. So they are offering to 19A. (Joint Comedies have nothing else to talk?)

The party leader has to take the entire responsibility for causing a split in the SLFP by removing the most popular individuals in the party from their electoral organiserships. I don’t know either what kind of ships are those (-sinking or floating- ) or what kind of English GLP writing.

But the party leader had the authority to recognize the party as long as not losing Mangala likes really damaging one. If he has recognized the party stronger than earlier, he deserves the credit.

Before this letter come to CT, the news of SLFP inviting Old King and Chandrika to the Kandy May Day has been released to the media. It looks like GLP missed that news piece. Because, at least, I did not see Old King was rejecting the invitation for any reason. But GLP had drafted this letter saying Old King wants to lead something (Opposition) – it cannot be the SLFP because by its constitution says EP has to lead it and EP, under a contract, staying in the government). Then it can be only SLPP that is being led by GLP now. I think GLP should resign from SLPP leadership. Old King, if he wants to lead be the leader of opposition he has to become the leader of SLPP. Then he has to prove his strength in the Parliament and should take the official designation of “Opposition”. After that he asks the SLFP ministers to resign and come to SLPP.
    Now:
1.) GLP is leading the SLPP.
2.) Old King did not reject the SLFP invitation; so, even after attending SLPP meeting, he can go to Kandy and honor the SLFP’s invitation.
3.) The only person so far honestly left SLFP is GLP. So it is too early for ministers to resign.
4).SLPP is not the opposition; it is only TNA. So the SLFP ministers would be doing a dump thinking if they resign their minister posts thinking they are joining the Opposition.
Why GL is putting the cart before the horse? I think this is bamboozling the people.

I see this as a desparate call by MR for people to attend his rally, which will only be heeded by thakkadiyas and gamay baiyyas of his type. We have had enough of his government and do not need him or his ilk anymore to run the country and destroy what is left of it. Remember how he and his family plundered country’s coffers with Finance Ministry in his hands under a stooge like Punchi Banda? Remember the damage MR did to the fabric of democratic governance and law and order? the mayhem at that time by wanton killings which were covered up by a servile police force and the law courts giving judgments as dictated by him? The reputation of the country was badly tarnished as a lawless land. Those who want more of it or the chance to rob some more will go to Galle Face and of course for the thrill of a free ride to Colombo with booze and lunch to boot! Sane people and working class knowledgeable of what they got in his time will never go there.
