Donald Trump & The Reality Of People’s Choice

By Vishwamithra1984

“For society to attempt to solve its desperate problems without the full participation of even very young people is imbecile.” ~Alvin Toffler

The Presidential Elections have produced, in the ‘liberated’ minds of the so-called pundits, a stunning victory for one of the most unscrupulous Presidential candidates ever in US history. While the Trump supporters must be celebrating in the most spirited manner, those who supported Trump’s opponent, Hillary Clinton are self-pitying in their own lost hopes and lost dreams. That proverbial ‘glass ceiling’ remains unshattered and quite intact. American voters were ready to elect a black President, yet they were not ready for a woman as their political head. Does that mean America is getting past the racial undertones of her two hundred and forty year history but not yet ready to embrace the fairer sex as its President? Or was the effect of the elections, as evidenced in the Brexit phenomenon, much more deeply rooted in the psyche of a nation turning inwards? Donald Trump’s election as the leader of the world’s leading military and economic power has thrown up more questions than answers. donald-trump

Given the intense volatility of Trump’s vitriol and his propensity to destroy his opponents to smithereens, his capacity to declare lies and exaggerations to an extent one would think far outpaces his lips, coupled with American media’s subservient conduct of information-dissemination to the palpable favor of Trump, willy nilly, the coming years of Trump Presidency appears quite frightening. If Trump begins to behave the way he has been behaving the way he adopted during his nasty campaigning style, the world will surely behold a new American phenomenon emerging from the bowels of a modern society that is called America but more representative of a pagan community trying to come to grips with a narcissist man who has fallen in love with himself beyond any comparable measure. That is to anticipate events.

The office of President of the United States of America is indeed of great consequence. In possession of vast and varied warehouses of modern war-weaponry ranging from intercontinental ballistic missiles to deep sea nuclear submarines, America in the guise of a protector of liberty and democracy in the world could be her own destroyer if and when such enormous powers are vested in the unpredictable and impulsive hands of a narcissist whose warped desires could far outweigh the needs of the commoner. Yet the concept of separation of powers as enshrined in the American Constitution would be the ultimate arbiter of matters that would seem to get out of control of the regulator of the switch of Presidency. In a real sense, the power that controls the switch dwells within the portals of the Senate and the House of Representatives rather than the President himself. Well, I might as well leave such sophisticated arguments to those constitutional experts whose opinions and views are much more scholarly and erudite in this context.

Yet it is commonly acknowledged that the genius of the American Constitution would ultimately safeguard ‘We the people’ from any and all forms of intrusions into their liberty, freedom and pursuit of happiness by any impostors including those who get elected to power by whatever means that seem to be within the realm of ‘normal and legal’ at the time. Donald Trump, until proven otherwise, belongs to that category of the elected who are palpably unworthy of such momentous powers the President of the United States of America holds within his fingers. It is even more pronounced, given the increasing diversity in the demographic transformations that are taking place in America, especially in the big cities and their immediate suburbs, when the winner of the national poll and the winner of the Electoral College are two different contestants. Hillary Clinton, by virtue of vastly populated states such as California and New York managed to secure a majority of voters at the national level. With the slow but sure estrangement of non-white voter base from the Republican Party, would Trump’s efforts be more towards furthering of that relationship or for a more reconciliatory moderate stance, especially on immigration reforms, is an intriguing question in the minds of many a political pundit and guru.

However, one might agree or disagree with the mechanics of Trump’s campaigning, but no one can take away his compulsive commitment to the notion of winning at all and any cost. That commitment pressed Donald Trump to the finish line. Such personalities populate the history of past and present world leaders. Even in Sri Lanka there was one such personality whose obsession with winning at all costs saw him achieve each and every goal he set his eyes on. Since the said personality has passed away, in the interest of journalistic etiquette, I refrain from committing his name on paper. Populism crafted in the rhetoric of a master-brander like Trump can win votes and change the course of a nation. Repetition of phrases such as crooked Hillary, corrupt Hillary and rigged system may win votes in the short run but when it comes to statecraft, adherence to these short-lived political slogans would boomerang and the retributory effects of such slogans would be even more devastating than the original sin of the emptiness of them.

It is certainly not fair by Trump to pass judgment on his way of conducting the affairs, both domestic and international, of the only super power in the world like the United States of America. Yet America has proven to be too big to fail; it’s proven to be too rich to be inconsequential in the affairs of man in the world, at least for the next half a century. Endowed with a supreme document drafted and penned almost to perfection by her founders two and half centuries ago, America is still the envy of the world. For the average American living in Kentucky, Oklahoma or Arizona, the ‘universe’ is his immediate neighborhood. In his neighborhood he finds first-class schools, he finds his sources of entertainment; he might not know the capital city of China or even Mexico, but he contends that he does not need to know for him and his family to lead a content and whole life. General knowledge that Sri Lankans are obsessed with is no barometer of success of the average American. In fact, therein lies the success story of America. A few brilliant minds and far-thinking men have come together in the past and owing to the free market economy and its magnetic appeal for profits have empowered even meager-looking entrepreneurs to make this country an oasis of the brave new world which it is today.

Donald Trump or his cohorts cannot undo those magnificent landscapes of the American story of today. As much as any changes, whether they be qualitative or quantitative, that are being anticipated after an election at which the incumbent party has been replaced by the opposing one, could be welcome in some quarters, they do represent a flashpoint of people’s feelings and emotions at a macro level. In the absence of a mandate-giving victory for Trump at the elections and in the context of a divided country which voted for one candidate at the national level and another at the Electoral College level, reconciliation between Democrats and Republicans may look extremely hard and daunting. With Donald Trumps’ un-nuanced and unsophisticated rhetoric, replacing more polite and diplomatic dialogue which is mistaken as political correctness, the task at the hands of ‘we the people’ is challenging at the beginning and vast in diversity and scope as they go on.

Political slogans won’t work in the fine arts of governance. Availability of a vast resource of knowledge and information at the tip of one’s finger via Google has made the world smaller and challenges bigger. A very few men and women would have the spine to withstand the gale of change that sweeps across all frontiers, political and geographical. Historians will keep theorizing and media men would attempt to justify their perverted predictions but the people at large will take a few steps back and reserve judgment for another day. Man can be judged only by his past performance, never by his present behavior to win the hearts and minds of a great majority of minorities. I have stated this before and dare repeat myself: no country is worthy of its existence if it continues to disrespect the rights of its minorities. Wide acceptance of an idea among a majority group is no proof of its validity. Participation of young men and women, whether educated or not, at a very meaningful level at shaping and defining the future course of the economic and social journey of a nation is a must. Without such a dynamic, without such a robust synergy from the younger generation, any society that boasts about being the sole superpower of the world would find itself at the gaping jaws of extinction.

Trump’s slash and burn tactics, may have won him the Presidency, for every nation has their share of angry and uninformed people, who in this instance have overlooked the fact that he was a very divisive, angry, insulting, racist candidate, who had the support of the white nationalists and supremacists. They showed contempt for hispanics, Muslims, blacks, even the disabled was not spared during this ugly campaign. After months of divisiveness and lies, it has left the nation having to contend with a reality show jackass, with no clue as to how to run a country, has surrounded himself with controversial right wingers, with a agenda that will take the country backwards. It seems the enormity of the job is only now hitting this man, and those around him. Things do not bode well for the US, and unfortunately the consequences will be felt worldwide. One would have expected the American people to learn a lesson after electing George W. Bush twice, but it seems Americans are no different from the Sri Lankans – they never learn lesson and keep repeating their mistakes, which has lasting consequences. Attacks on minorities, including Asians, have already spiked up. Hillary Clinton was not the best candidate either, but she does not promote hate against the minorities, nor mock at the disabled.

I have been living in the West in the last 30 years.. How was London, Los Angeles, Sydney, Melbourne in 1985 and today, what a contrast?? In London, you still see some white people but you hardly hear people speak in English there. In cities like Sydney and Melbourne, you hardly see white people. This is bad for both parties, that is in SL now there are no young boys in their 20s who belongs to middle class. When I talk to my old friends in SL, almost all says their children are in USA, Canada or Australia… So who is going to help SL to build or be competitive with rest of the world. I guess, Afghanistan, Syria, Iran type countries have the similar problem. What would be future of these countries if the cream of their youngsters move out..

My view is this “Trump Effect” would spread to rest of West and human migration would get back to a sustainable level for the both parties….

Americans are stupid. More stupid than us Sri Lankans.

The world, in particular our climate will pay the price. As a result of electing that unstable clown.

      That is my considered opinion.

      Cheers!

I think Srilankens are the most stupiest among literate folks on this planet.

That they have proved being intoxicated to Ghanasara, Wimal Buruwanse, Gonthadipila NOT forgetting Rajakashes. Alone that are sufficient anyone with a little brain to get it.

        Bittara rakkene Ben,
Its your culture from slavery to buddha rakkena that is at fault. America has resources and tech, communications and more while you have to export labour or labour for foreign exchange. I doubt even cricket loving Theresa May would listen to Lankan’s now that she has given a belly full to Indians asking for more work/student visas.UK needs USA trade and USA Trump needs Hindu Indian Trade more than Chinese.

“What makes us exceptional is that we are a nation of laws, and that we are all equal under those laws – Hillary’s corruption shreds the principle on which our nation was founded,” Trump said.

You and your culture is so intelligent to live off royal american seepage to win the war on 9th May and have handouts from 1948.
You are doomed without that IMF aid as she too is in big trouble and may be forced out in January as she was not elected.
Merkel won’t win and last after October 2017- 2 million refugees not the 2 hundred thousand. Same goes with the crooked new Portuguese UN chief an anti Trump. Americans are the main and almost sole funders of NATO, UN, and most International organisations while the rest of the islands belch and fart in their new found glory with american handouts.

Inconvenient Truth: The ice never malted at Iceland for us to navigate via the shortest root. So we have a train- silk route to Spain from China to extend to South Africa. with less carbon foot print.

your problem is trying to compare ambude culture living in villages of 3rd world with the urban of the world. No one can accurately predict nature because there are many aspects to be considered. When they say its going to rain does it always??

        USA, Urban density – 82.7 %
        UK, Urban Density – 81.7 %
        Lanka Urban Density; 19.3 %

it’s important for you to know that others are aware of what you are when you criticise advance societies and bite the hand that feeds you.

Ben please learn a bit of class diplomacy from Theresa May and teach your people to keep the problem at home as the working class UK tourist on a cheap holiday is not all encompassing UK.
She was not for Brexit but she is spearheading Brexit as PM.
The priest daughter spoke against a Trump win but the moment he won she made such a brilliant statement that foxed even the Americans. The special relationship.Trumps message to Hillary and Obama- civilised world.

              Trunket,

Do you keep the cheapest one can find, blended Whiskey from Tesco, under your bed?

                Ben,
I never keep stuff under the bed because cleaning becomes difficult. I don’t drink Whiskey since I dislike the smell nor do I market at Tesco and neither do I look for cheap bargains. What I have tasted many moons ago is very good `rusty nail` that is fragrant and keeps one warm.

BTW Ranil is desperate to sign agreement with India for fear Sinhalese and Tamils losing freedom. Its not too far off with China deep into economic meltdown. CPC is worried and funding their redundancy- $40 billion.

You can’t fight US or UK because they are number 1 and 2 trading partners.Don has disallowed lobbyist from holding cabinet position and the law does not permit nepotism.

    Vishwamithra,

Relax my friend. When all the hoopla has settled down it will be business as usual. The presidency of the US is only a side show. The powers that be, the industrial military business organisations are the ones who run the real show with oversight from the iron fisted US Jewish establishment. See what Obama never achieved despite repeated rhetoric – the US led warfare, torture and mayhem around the world in fact increased. Guantanamo Bay torture centre never closed down though Obama repeatedly promised to do so. Similarly all what Trump promised to do will not get done. No wall will be built in the US Mexico border. The 3 million or so illegal Mexican migrants will not be deported en masse as promised.

The presidential election ‘make believe’ side show in the US will carry on but the status quo will remain the same.

“no country is worthy of its existence if it continues to disrespect the rights of its minorities.”

This truism is applicable to any and all rights EXCEPT the right to dismember the country such as enshrined in the Indian constitution. Majority should be firm against such ambitions of minorities and equally important, majority should be firm against its own members who violates the equality of minorities.

In Sri Lanka majority must be united against this open challenge by the minorities to form their own enclaves based on their ethnic and religious identities.

You need to organise and lead many padayataras whipping up triumphalism and Sinhala ultra nationalism to stop the Tamils! Or, you can join the MR gang, if not already, as they are very good at playing with fear!

The question is whether your antics will succeed or not! It is out of your hand my friend; it is being dictated by the outside forces! Trump presidency will not help you; only option for you is to understanding the need to empower the tamils for the good of the country!

Lets not get too carried away, Trump got lucky.

Trump got fewer votes than the Republican candidate, Mitt Romney received in 2012 and far fewer votes than Republican candidate, John McCain received in 2008. Trump won because Hillary Clinton received some 10% less votes than Obama got in 2012 and more than 15% fewer votes than Obama did in 2008. Trump is the President, but he has no mandate.

Sri Lankan opposition party members like GoRa and BaRa,
Wimal,Dinesh,Gamanpila are over the moon because Trump won.
I do not rule out the possibility that Rajapaksa brothers have contributed huge ammounts to Republican Party.
DJ as a US lover while in China must have planned with others to make Trump win.

These people also wants GoRa to become president by ousting MS through early elections to through army coup. GoRa once become president will have secret deals with US & China.

In spite of all the pretence and the mechanizations, America has always been nothing but a vibrant oligarchy; there is always an element of Wild-West lawlessness in the mix from inception.

Americans are the best at talking themselves up but their governments have never represented the average working man – the majority. At some stage there would have been a few steps taken towards a representative democracy – for all – at the time of the break-up of Standard Oil, AT&T, etc….. but that time is long gone. Now the biggies are protected with public funds and allowed never to fail.

The world is always in flux but the best “democracies” at present time are Canada, Australia and New Zealand for one reason that no one sees. The heads of their governments are not their Prime Ministers but the Queen of England. Even if the Queen is senile and heads an imbecilic family, that has a “sobering” effect to keep their feet on the ground and not lose their heads.

My good buddy Mahinda lacked such a sobering effect/hand, and people in their great love wanted to blow him big and send him to the moon without a rocket. Well, whatever the country’s laws the privileged are accustomed to breaking they can’t break the laws of nature. What goes up must come down.

    So will The Donald.

It cost money and the american public have lost while others elsewhere the whole world live a better life swindling and scream sovereignty! Even beggars belch and fart- sovereignty under liberty at the cost of US taxpayer.

I am willing to give him a chance to help those left behind by the globalization of the economy and NAFTA. A lot of people who voted for him are traditionally blue collar union worker types as well. Hillary could not hold on to WI, MI and PA. That was it. She is part of the elitist corrupt insiders. Take off your blinders man.

Of course Trump polled far less votes than Romney or McCain. He lost the popular vote and after all the votes are counted he will probably lose the popular vote by over a million votes. He did not get a landslide. Obama blew his chances by not prosecuting corrupt bankers. But Trump used the undertones to win. Now he has to govern. His style is like MR’s and GR’s. He will use cronies and his family. He already has been exposed for threatening Megyn Kelly a popular conservative journalist and smart lawyer at Fox News. He called her and yelled abuse like Gota did with Frederica Janz.

Welcome to Trumpland. If succeeds we will cheer and if he fails we have 4 years to find a non-corrupt, non-lying insider like Hillary to support

Wake up and smell the coffee. Gay rights will take a backburner. Keshap will not have the balls to parade with Gay rights. He will have to defend war if Trump bombs the shit out of Iran. He will have to defend civilian deaths as Trump has promised to FINALLY end the ISIS curse that Obama bungled.

Also note the following. Liberals are in denial about the large Electoral college vote Trump got. That is how this nation works. So get on with it.

Read the following. All colored folks are on notice for not assimilating and having their own little enclaves.. You all come here and want to force your cultures but you resist the culture of the majority. You want to celebrate your holidays but you get upset if the President says Merry Christmas to our Christian majority. That will stop now. No more Ramadan or Diwali bullshit in the Whitehouse UNLESS they also have a CHRISTMAS festival. MAKE AMERICA CHRISTIAN AGAIN. It was our founding fathers Christian values that made this nation not Wahabis, not ISIS, not Hindus nor Buddhists. We are tolerant and multicultural BECAUSE we are a christian a nation that created the amazing constitiution and the first constitutional Republic. No Sharia law and No Wahabists terrorists anymore.

Because of her double standards , because of curse made by all those civillians who died in Libiya . She destroyed many prospherus wellfare states like Libiya , Syria under the pretext of destroying terrorism paving way for chaos and anarchy.

The people of the US elected Obama because he was seen as the best of those put up for election at the time. His half-black-half-white ancestry was incidental. The people did not elect Hillary Clinton because they wanted something different from the same old, stale, political establishment that had continued to ignore an increasingly vociferous section of those who could, and did come out to, vote.

They have taken a gamble on his (Trump’s) shortcomings. But the American form of government is robust and will survive. It is not the end of the world! Sure, we will have plenty of surprises, good, and bad. Let us all just try to learn something from the exciting times to come.

Obama was no saint but a manipulator of justice department while she the state department – therefore Nikki is wanted.
Obama’s fear is that Donald Trump would prosecute Hillary and in turn implicate Obama. Jesse Jackson want’s Obama to pardon Hillary like Nixon was pardoned by Ford but nothing is moving.

“Obama’s fear is that Donald Trump would prosecute Hillary and in turn implicate Obama. “

No , Donald Trump would not be able to prosecute Hillary , period ! US system clearly separates powers one from another. FBI director has successfully concluded the investigation against the Hillary’s private E-mail server fiasco for the 2nd time ;thus, there is nothing to scrutinise any more , damage has already been done to Hillary. US president can’t interfere with the justice system , if he does , he will be impeached .

My gut feelings say both Republicans and Democrats would impeach him before he serves his four year term .

He promised to repel the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution.
Where there is a will there is a way.Nothing is permanent. He won’t jail her but she would stay chained and that is the end of Clinton dynasty.Bushes nephew voted Trump but they ignore. Getting rid of dynasty’s with power is good for the progress of any nation.
The case then goes on for little over 3 years and its time for next election. politics is a dirty game. – destroy 33k e-mails. Libya?? She said I will not come back to politics then returned to contest.

What is important for Lanka is `Term Limit` for MP’s . Trump is going to introduce that to Congress too.(Americans are greedy too) Look at the old women refusing to resign (like Srimao) Leader of Dem – 17 years Nancy Pelosi- So Tim Ryan of Ohio to challenge Nancy Pelosi for House minority leader- (perhaps to put Trump off from bringing in term limits.
Read the history of Term limits as its very important for lanka to stop dynasty building.

China retirement age is 55 for common people but party men continue.

“” FBI director has successfully concluded the investigation against the Hillary’s private E-mail server fiasco for the 2nd time””

He or the office could not have carried out that volume (650,000 e-mails)in 7 days. The 33,000 e-mail she has deleted can never be deleted from the server which is not backed up on tape.
Folk are angry about the death and shame at Libya- Obama was cool to put the blame on UK and France because both were in a soup- Why didn’t Boris apologise to obama? Obama and his work on SL is another question- didn’t Samanta specifically say Obama is interested for the 2nd time. When common people are killed the race, colour etc should not come in. He moved justice Dept in the Trinco case when Rajapassa was in the US- It could have solved your problem at home in a big way. Why is South Africa moving out of ICC blaming obama??

The Amendment’s Double Jeopardy Clause provides the right to be tried only once in federal court for the same offense. The Amendment also has a Due Process Clause (similar to the one in the 14th Amendment) as well as an implied equal protection requirement (Bolling v. Sharpe). Finally, the Amendment requires that the power of eminent domain be coupled with “just compensation” for those whose property is taken.

That is exactly where Obama was hiding and killing while she at state deptt.
Head of State immunity saves Rajapakse from war-crimes charges
Noting that “two centuries of case law and basic constitutional and statutory principles prevent this court from allowing the plaintiffs’ complaint to move forward at this time,” District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly Wednesday, in the ruling on the case against Sri Lanka’s President Rajapakse on war crime charges filed by three Tamil plaintiffs, said she had to dismiss the suit against President Rajapaksa because the Obama administration had said he was immune from litigation as a foreign head of state.(Tamilnet)
you will need the tamils to do your dirty work like prabha did it for you with India.

“My gut feelings say both Republicans and Democrats would impeach him before he serves his four year term . “
Why doesn’t Obama stop these student protest but stops other protest. Where are the wall street protesters. you said you feared Gota/mahinda or you just said it like a politician to get a thug-baldi government?

Unlike Boris(one man melting pot) the journo who got hit by working class journo Don(Scot/German) is smart enough to not give a chance just because they make noise- sex,and sex of the asses.
Why only africans have been prosecuted when lankans are Negroids too?

This is a clear vote against the “SYSTEM” ! If Fonseka was appointed when he actually won the election…the same would have happened here.

Maybe it is not too late ???

Who are the vociferous? educated illiberal democrats/ socialist.

“What makes us exceptional is that we are a nation of laws, and that we are all equal under those laws – Hillary’s corruption shreds the principle on which our nation was founded,” he said.

“When the outcome is fixed, when the system is rigged, people lose hope – they stop dreaming, they stop trying. When the powerful can get away with anything, because they have the money and the connections to rig the system, then people lose confidence in our laws and in our future,” he said.

Americans, he said, have one ultimate check on Hillary’s corruption and that is the power of voting.
The Bowl voted in full swing.

A federal anti-nepotism law prohibits a president from hiring family members to serve in his administration, but the Journal said it was not clear if the law applied to a position inside the White House. It added Kushner had indicated he would avoid the issue by not taking pay for any White House work.
