Due to protests by Muslim groups, there won’t be a ‘Surya Namaskar’ routine on International Yoga Day celebrations in India. In as much as this is hugely disappointing, and it’s a fact that there are some Muslims who are Yoga exponents and instructors and love their faith as well as Yoga, Yogi Adityanath in my opinion, is wrong to make the comments he made against those who oppose Yoga or the Surya Namaskar routine. And I’ll tell you why including sharing my perspective on Yoga.
It is indeed sad that Surya Namaskar the best. complete, fundamental and wholesome yoga routine ever, has been dropped from the grand Yoga event in India where 35,000 people including politicians, armed services, film stars, the youth and school children are expected to take part, on International Yoga day on the 21st of June 2015, celebrated for the first time, world over.
By this event India also hopes to make it to the Guinness Book of Records!
Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi and Baba RamDev, the famous Yoga Guru will be leading the Yoga drill scheduled to take place, in the early morning hours of Sunday morning “on Rajpath, the main ceremonial avenue in Delhi that stretches from Rashtrapati Bhawan, the presidential palace, to the majestic India Gate.”
In New York too more than 30,000 people are expected to assemble in Time Square for the event where UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, UN General Assembly President Sam Kutesa and Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj are scheduled to speak.[1]
It was on Narendra Modi’s plea, made at his maiden speech as Prime Minister of India in the United Nations (UN), that the UN declared the 21st of June as International Yoga Day. [2]
In fact Narendra Modi attributes his ability to keep working all day and sleeping less, managing only a few hours of sleep but sound quality sleep at night to Yoga and Pranayam: “If I feel tired I have a habit of doing deep breathing for 5-10 minutes, after doing deep breathing for 5-10 minutes I become fresh and start my work again,” he told a viewer at a ‘Google+Hangout programme who asked him how he keeps working long hours and how many hours of sleep he gets. [3]
But it seems in India politics and religion have got in the way of Yoga – both an ancient art and a science which in health terms, is undeniably preventative, curative and therapeutic to say the least. It has now been announced that the Centre has decided to drop Surya Namaskar from the programme on International Yoga Day as a result of protests from the Muslim community:
After protesting against Modi government’s plans of including surya namaskar as part of Yoga drill in schools on 21 June, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) finally got its way,” the First Post stated in its article: International Yoga Day: Centre Axes Asana to Sooth Irate Muslim groups.[4]
This aside, with all due respect to the prevailing Muslim view, it is refreshing to note, there are at least two staunch “practicing” Muslims as well as Yoga exponents and instructors in the planet whom I have heard of, who in complete contrast to what some Muslims feel, even find similarity in the Muslim prayer and the Surya Namaskar routine. If you read Yogi Fari’s blog, “Yoga in all things” [5] you will find how strong she is in her view that, “Islam and Yoga can co-exist”:

“I am a practicing Muslim, I believe in the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and I believe in the Koran. I also believe in Yoga. I believe.. that Islam and Yoga can co-exist. Somewhere along the road, it has been insinuated that I might not be a good Muslim because I do Yoga. This post is to address that voice and to quiet it..Yoga did come through Hinduism, there is no denying that, but we are grown up enough to understand that you can take your practice where you want it to go. Who says when you meditate, you can’t call out to Allah, Jesus or even the Candy Man? In the end you know what is in your heart and no God will deny your truth….I have a feeling my parents don’t like to tell people that I teach Yoga, because they are embarrassed and may be ashamed that their daughter went all the way to the United States to get a degree in finance and instead is teaching Yoga..A lot of people don’t realize this but if you look at the Muslim prayer, the actual routine, it is very similar to yogic poses… It has mountain pose, hero’s pose, forward bend, child pose and a hand mudra. To someone like me, there are many similarities between these two deeply spiritual practices and I find a natural flow and balance in living like a Muslim Yogi. I am not saying Islam came from Yoga, or vice versa, I am simply saying that Yogis and Muslims are more alike than people realize. In a place like India where Hindus and Muslims live side by side, Yoga is a way of life. I once read a story about an Indian Muslim who woke up at 5 am and then did his Yoga routine. When asked if he felt Yoga was in contradiction to his faith, his response was that from a purely physical point of view, Yoga helped him perform his prayers better. In this article referred to by Yogi Fari, “Can’t Yoga and Islam get along” Insiya Rasiwala-Finn who like Yogi Fari is a Muslim Yoga exponent and instructor from Vancouver, Canada, talks of a fatwa issued by Muslim clerics in Malaysia back in 2008 and says its “ludicrous” that Yoga an “un-dogmatic practice” can be seen as a threat to an organised religion such as Islam :

“In November 2008, Muslim clerics in Malaysia issued a religious edict banning the practice of yoga by Muslims. Malaysia is a multi-ethnic nation of 27 million people, two thirds of them Muslim. The Muslim clerics deemed yoga to be haramharam (forbidden) because of yoga’s Hindu and Indian roots and suggested badminton as a possible fitness alternative. Abdul Shukor Husin, chairman of Malaysia’s highest Islamic body, the National Fatwa Council, stated that, “many Muslims fail to understand that yoga’s ultimate aim is to be one with a god of a different religion,” namely Hinduism. While Malaysia’s prime minister soon overruled the religious edict and responded that he did not object to Malaysian Muslims practicing yoga as long as they stayed away from chanting or any religious aspects of the practice; and while technically a fatwa is not legally binding, I found myself fascinated by this story. The idea that yoga, something I consider a spiritual, yet un-dogmatic practice, can be seen as a threat to an organized religion, particularly a religious tradition that I come from, struck me as ludicrous.”

The stories of these two Muslims who follow their Islamic faith as well as practice Yoga with equal reverence are indeed refreshing as much as they are rare; their liberal thinking should be applauded.
That’s why when I like to think Hinduism is the most tolerant of other religions, there are those who bring discredit to it and behave intolerably. In as much as I am hugely disappointed that Surya Namaskar, has been dropped on Yoga Day in India in schools and in the main event in the capital, Delhi, I have to say I am equally disappointed at Yogi Adityanath’s response to those who oppose the routine. I strongly feel, despite protest from the Muslims and whatever the hostility and provocation coming from the opposing side, the revered Yogi Adityanath should not have reacted negatively and made the comments he is apparently supposed to have made. [7] It has been widely reported that the BJP Parliamentarian and Yogi went as far as saying that those, “who oppose Yoga and Surya Namaskar must leave India (Hindustan).” [8]
I dare say Yogi Adityanath’s comments against those who were opposed to the practice of Yoga and Surya Namaskar is wrong. I am glad Sushma Swaraj the Minister for External Affairs has called his comments unfortunate. Yogi Adityanath is supposed to have, among other, cussed those who “oppose” Surya Namaskar, saying they, “should drown” that they will be condemned to “darkness” that, “the sun has “never discriminated” against anyone and that the, “intelligence of those opposed to Surya Namaskar is laughable”.
Before I tell you why he’s wrong in my opinion, as much as I know as a practicing Yogi myself, let me tell you the Surya Namaskar,[9] also known as the Sun Salute is a way of paying obeisance to the rising Sun and invoking the Sun God, you could say, in Yoga parlance; the Sun among other from which we obtain Prana – the life force – the vital life energy, without which we are a mere corpse.
The whole purpose is to get the maximum benefit of the Sun’s rays (energy) as it rises, whilst performing a combination of stretches, a complete and wholesome routine in itself, designed to keep you in sound physical and mental health…by getting all your systems working. “It activates the endocrine system and the chakras, the vortexes through which the prana – the vital life energy is channelled, helping to build strength and flexibility.” it is said. It has twelve asanas that’s performed on both the right and left sides in a flowing manner, amounting to 24; all of the movements done in harmony with the breath. And each asana has a corresponding mantra (name for the sun) which is repeated whilst the routine is performed and additionally a final mantra at the culmination of the routine; each mantra be it known is a name for the Sun God actually describing its attributes.
This said, the revered Yogi I dare say is wrong for the following reasons:
- He’s wrong because his comment has brought disrepute to Yoga Sadhana, it’s sanctity and the amazing Surya Namaskar
- He’s wrong to expect everyone to have the desire to practice Yoga Sadhana and perform the Surya Namaskar
- He’s wrong to cuss that people should drown; to condemn people to darkness and say, “their intelligence is laughable,” because they oppose Surya Namaskar is counter-productive and can make people detest it more
- He’s wrong because the Hindu pantheon to which Yoga is a part does not force or pro-actively convert people to its philosophy, rituals or way of life
- He’s wrong to condemn people to darkness and then say, “the Sun does not discriminate.” The irony is that yes, the Sun doesn’t discriminate at all, it freely shines on everyone, never grudging its light or nourishment to anyone!
- He’s wrong as the Sun is very giving; the names given to the Sun (that are repeated like a mantra whilst performing each asana) are actually its attributes as you will see here below and embody benevolence more than anything!

2. Aum Ravaye Namaha…the shining light, the radiant one
3. Aum Suryaya Namaha…the dispeller of darkness
4. Aum Bhanave Namaha …who illumines
5. Aum Khagaya Namaha…who is all pervading
6. Aum Pushne Namaha…the giver of nourishment
7. Aum Hiranyagarbhaya Namaha.. who is golden in colour
8. Aum Marichaya Namaha…the giver of light with infinite rays
9. Aum Adityaya Namaha…the son of Aditi – the cosmic divine mother
10.Aum Savitre Namaha…the one who is responsible for life
11.Aum Arkaya Namaha…worthy of praise and glory
12.Aum Bhaskaraya Namaha… giver of wisdom and cosmic illumination

(Note that the routine may be performed simply without the chants, as is the case when it comes to the vast numbers who do Surya Namaskar – most practice without the chants.)
In the latest set of pictures published by BBC Asia, it’s heartening to see Muslims visibly involved in preparing for International Yoga Day in India. [10]
While there is much good that can be said about us human beings, it is deplorable we are at times steeped in such intolerance, prejudice, small mindedness and bigotry. When will we realize that there is but One God and One Humanity – a truth so well articulated by a Great Siva Yogi himself, Thirumular.”Onre Kulam Oruvane Thevan”! Why can’t we celebrate each other’s uniqueness as a people but also give each other the space to thrive and build on that uniqueness.

Madam Usha is the writer & does not belong to my community (no matter how many relatives are inter married,including her own children) ,so I will treat her as an outsider ,but with due respect to defend my community as my duty.

surya Namaskar it is their right. When mentioning muslims in the title Mrs Sri Skandarajah has made it a rascist article and shows her narrow minded racial bias. Two of her sons may be married to muslims which is a good thing because it shows they are not biased like their mother but she has to come to terms with the fact that in this world different people have different beliefs and they are entitled to them. The problem only arises when some people try to force their beliefs on others.

Muslims will be fasting during this period due to Ramadhan, fasting from sun-up to sun-down starting 19th June, whilst this UN promoted Yoga day event is is due to be held on 21st instant. That is another reason why no practicing Muslim everywhere in the world would not be willing to take part in this event.
Solidarity amongst all the people of the world should be based on common themes rather than religious themes, as the practices involved in Yoga are more inclined towards Hindu practices and thus is considered more as a religious event. Further, its many characteristics are incompatible with monotheism practiced by the People of the Book, i.e. Jews, Christians and Muslims, since Sun worship, fire worship and statue worship is un-Islamic to say the least. Thus this event is not conducive towards participation of adherents of other religions of the world. Muslims in particular, will always get the same benefits of Yoga when they pray 5 times daily throughout their lifetime, fast during the month of Ramadhan, and spend generously on lesser fortunate to nullify their their own negative vibes, and prepare themselves to face the hereafter.

There are benefits for each of the above activities. However, if you restrict your life ONLY to these activities, you will loose the benefits you can get from other activities, such as exercise, yoga, etc.
1. Yoga is a Physical activity, gives benefits, even though the Priests addedd other items to it. You will not end up in Hell because you did Yoga.
However, if you Follow Iblis, Satan, Shaitan, Lucifer and Mara, like ISIS and the Wahhabis and their clones, you will likely end up in Hell.
2. Covering Head to toe, or most of the human skin, especially by women, will decrease the Vit D levels in the body. This will affect the health as well as the health and well being of unborn children. This then become a nutrition problem.

Why are you so agitated with the Muslims fasting ?
Your anger and racism written all over your post. Sure, we all need to help Rohignya people for the suffering and pain brought upon on them by the ruthless people, I will not call them Buddhists, because Buddhism does not condone such brute thugs who have no mercy for human lives. I call the victims humans first and then Muslims.
That is why I say, humanity should take precedence over religion and no religion, as far as I know has said anything against humanity.
Please tone down your rhetoric and look at things in a humane manner and do not tag human behaviours of different faiths to tarnish the nobility of a religion. If a person by the name Mohamed does a mistake it is that individual who needs to be isolated and reprimanded not Islam, similarly if Siva does a mistake, we do not call Hinduism bad.
Let us come to terms on common grounds especially on humanity and delve on sensitive issues in a proper forum, rather than castigating each other with our limited knowledge on religions.
I suggest you to listen to Dr.Zakir Naik on comparative religion to know detailed analysis on different faiths. He is an ocean and we all are blessed to be enlightened with his deep insight into almost all religions.
Hope I have made my point clear to you with my limited power of expression.

The principal of a famous Anglican Grammar school in Melbourne once said that he would prefer a thinking atheist to a conforming Christian.
Time has come for people of all religions to put their thinking cap and stop blindly following outdated concepts.
The sun is a just a planet, so is the moon.
Surely Yoga can be promoted in a secular way. If early morning sun is good why not say so? Why should one be asked to do “Namaskar”?
Nehru put India on the right road of secularism. It is sad to see short sighted politicians trying to gain short term advantage at the expense of secularism and unity.

DT 7:2 The Lord commands the Israelites to “utterly destroy” and show “no mercy” to those whom he gives them for defeat.
DT 20:13-14 “When the Lord delivers it into your hand, put to the sword all the males …. As for the women, the children, the livestock and everything else in the city, you may take these as plunder for yourselves.”
DT 20:16 “In the cities of the nations the Lord is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes.”
DT 21:10-13 With the Lord’s approval, the Israelites are allowed to take “beautiful women” from the enemy camp to be their captive wives. If, after sexual relations, the husband has “no delight” in his wife, he can simply let her go.

Although the term “Hindu Jihad,” is a word kept by Christian medias in india. Many Hindus object to the term Hindu Jihad because Hinduism teaches peace and harmony. But Hindu fundamantalist saying hindus will recover whole india as hindu raj(rule of brahmins or upper caste). But Bhagavad Gita says jihad or dharma means self-defence. Hindu organization in india is misleading a word jihad for their benefits.

Fighting prescribed in the Bhagavad Gita too
All the major religions of the world have prescribed fighting, at sometime or the other, especially in self-defence or for fighting against oppression.Mahabharata is an epic and sacred Scripture of the Hindus, which mainly deals with a fight between the cousins, the Pandavas and the Kauravas. In the battlefield Arjun prefers not to fight and be killed rather than having his conscience burdened with the killing of his relatives. At this moment, Krishna advises Arjun in the battlefield and this advice is contained in the Bhagvad Gita. There are several verses in the Bhagvad Gita where Krishna advises Arjun to fight and kill the enemies even though they are his relatives.
It is mentioned in The Bhagvad Gita Chapter 1 verse 43-46(43) O Krishna, maintainer of the people, I have heard by disciplic succession that those who destroy family traditions dwell always in hell”
(44) “Alas, how strange it is that we are preparing ourselves to commit great sinful acts, driven by the desire to enjoy royal happiness.”
(45) I would consider better for the sons of Dhritarashtra to kill me unarmed and unresisting rather than fight with them.
(46) “Arjuna, having thus spoken, cast aside his bow and arrow, and sat down on the chariot, his mind, overwhelmed with grief”.
Krishna further replies in Bhagvad Gita Chapter 2 Verse 2, 3“My dear Arjuna, how have these impurities come upon you? They are not at all befitting a man who knows the progressive values of life. They lead not to higher planets but to infamy.
“O son of Partha, do not yield to this degrading impotence. It does not become you. Give up such petty weakness of heart and arise, O chastiser of the enemy!”
When Arjuna prefers to be killed unarmed and unresisting rather than fight and kill his cousins Kauravas, Krishna replies to Arjun by saying how this impure thought has come to you which prevents you from entering heaven. Give up this degrading Impotence and weakness of heart and arise, O defeater of enemy.
Krishna further says in Bhagvad Gita Chapter 2 verse 31-3331. “Considering your specific duty as a Kshatriya, you should know that there is no better engagement for you than fighting on religious principles, so there is no need for hesitation.”
32. “O Partha, happy are the Kshatriya to whom such fighting opportunities come unsought, opening for them the door of the heavenly planets”.
33. “If however, you do not fight this religious war, then you will certainly incur sin, for neglecting your duties, and thus loose your reputation as a fighter”.
There are hundreds of verses in the Bhagvad Gita alone, which encourages fighting and killing, many times more as compared to such verses in the Qur’an.Imagine if someone were to say that the Bhagvad Gita encourages the killing of the family members to attain paradise, without quoting the context – such a deliberate attempt will be devilish. But within the context if I say that for truth and justice fighting against the evil is compulsory, even if it be against your relatives, it makes sense.
I wonder how come the critics of Islam, especially critics amongst the Hindus, point a finger at the Qur’an when it speaks about fighting and killing unjust enemies. The only possibility I can think of is that they themselves have not read their sacred scriptures such as the Bhagavad Gita, Mahabharata and the Vedas.
Critics of Islam including Hindu critics speak against the Qur’an and the Prophet when they say that if you are killed while doing Jihad i.e. fighting for the truth, you are promised paradise.Besides quoting Qur’anic verses they quote Sahih Bukhari Vol. 4, Book of Jihad Chapter no. 2 Hadith No. 46
“Allah guarantees that He will admit the Mujaahid in His cause to Paradise if he is killed, otherwise he will return him to his home safely with rewards and war booty”.
(Sahih Bukhari Vol. 4, Book of Jihad Chapter no. 2 Hadith No. 46)
There are various similar verses in Bhagavad Gita guaranteeing a person paradise if he is killed while fighting. Take the example of Bhagavad Gita Chapter 2 verse 37:
“O son of Kunti, either you will be killed in the battlefield and attain the heavenly planets (paradise), or you will conquer and enjoy the earthly kingdom, therefore get up and fight with determination”.
(Bhagavad Gita 2:37)
Similarly Rigved Book No. 1 Hymn 132 Verse 2-6 as well as many other verses of Hindu Scriptures speak about fighting and killing.

Vulgarity in Vedas is already discussed in the article Obscenity in Vedas. In this article I shall deal with vulgarities in other Hindu scriptures. Talking about sexuality is the most favorite topic of Hindus. Obviously it’s rooted in their genes. Hindu fanatics enjoy a lot mocking others religions with fake references and the only solution to this seems to be showing some facts about their gods and sages from their own books. As I said in the article Obscenity in Vedas, I have no intention to mock Hindu religious personalities or hurt the sentiments of Hindus. But after seeing their mockery of other religions it looks like just a refutation to Hindu fanatics isn’t enough, Hinduism has to be decoded to show those fanatics what they follow. Hindu fanatics just by watching epic movies like Mahabharata and Ramayana on television start believing Hinduism to be the most decent religion and are in the delusion that Hindu gods were the greatest being on earth.
As a matter of fact Hindu gods were no different than present Swamis and other Hindu priests who are caught in rape and murder cases. Today it’s only because of media, open mindedness of women and excellent work of police that all these Swamis are caught red handed. But police and media weren’t there back then, but the shameless act of their gods is well preserved in their own scriptures. If a religion can be blamed for terrorism only because of its few followers then why Hinduism shouldn’t be blamed for the rapists Swamis who are caught once every month. After all Swamis are representatives of Hindu religion, then why spare them. Rape and Murder has become like an eligibility to become Swami. I was embarrassed to write this article because many verses are so obscene that it cannot be discussed openly. Nowadays Hindus are very actively insulting other religions on the internet, This compelled me to write this article.

Looking at thr video, it does seem like a praise to the sun god. My question is why would I praise the sun when I can praise the creator of that light. It doesn’t make sense from a religious point of view. I know in Hinduism you guys like to appreciate things that are definitely a gift and I totally agree but I think you go too far and make everything and anything good a god!
Said that I don’t personally mind doing the moves without having to chant any words out, if I have to do this as an extra physical activity to others. In Islam what is important is intention and not necessarily actions (as long as those actions don’t transgress the boundaries of faith)! However, the muslim community has a lot more better and bigger things to focus on and its high time they did, so don’t get sidelined into things that are more controversial than benefical!

Thanks for addressing the debate clearly. I am glad the thought has been put out in the open in India and is being debated in the current milieu of religious oppression in many places. It is good for global sensitivity to other people’s religious rights.This would also give people of all dominant faiths a chance to think through the religious oppression practiced by their co-religionists including many of their clerics. In this particular context, because of Indian history, for example during the Bakhti period thousands of Jains were killed bec of the incitement by an alvar and Budhists were persecuted due to Shankara Acharya’s teachings and now Christians and Muslims are regularly being persecuted by Hindus and Navalar taught against non Saivite gods, it is therefore hard for a non-saivite in India and JAffna to buy this Hindu Saint’s statement as genuine Hindu belief. In other countries other religionists persecute.
HArmless as it is made out to be it is very insensitive to have included it in a multi-cultural event in the first place for even if the Muslims and the Christians looked 18o degrees behind to Mecca or Jerusalem chanting their own mantras or not, still by association participation would be to flout their monotheistic convictions of not worshiping any creature.
Hope the organizers are sensitive to the position of the Muslimsas well.

Why don’t you practice hindu saint’s way of dusk to dawn fasting for 13.5 hrs which is not only refraining from eating and drinking but also abstaining from sexual activities and blood letting? If @raja @cholan @ram consider muslim fasting just a reversal of time of food habit do it and then preach yoga with sun worship? If you won’t underscore the words ‘reversal of time’, you are kidding, never did nor intend to do. Easier said than done!
