Easter Carnage & Grand Failure Of Leadership

By Ameer Ali

Ameer Ali

Never in the history of Sri Lanka has there been such a masterly engineered and flawlessly executed terror attack on soft targets to bring down a calamity of incalculable magnitude. These heartless and mentally deranged criminals who masterminded this mayhem have no religion, no morals and not even an iota of love for humanity. They are the scum of society. The country and its people are obviously in a state of shock. It will take several more Easters and years to forget what had happened.

Whether this infamy was totally home designed or planned abroad and executed by local hirelings, and whether it was a revenge attack for an earlier carnage inflicted on another entity by some foreign power or powers only time would tell. After all, terrorism is now a global phenomenon and no country is immune to it. The government of Sri Lanka with its intelligence and security departments will no doubt leave no stone unturned in investigating this heinous crime, and full force of the law must be brought to bear upon the criminals. In the meantime, the government and opposition should refrain from playing politics with the investigation and allow law enforcement to do its work without any interference.

To an outsider, the scale of this operation appears to carry all the hall marks of a foreign terrorist outfit. The initial investigation should start with the attack on a Methodist church in a remote village in Anuradhapura during the New Year celebrations. According to news reports that was carried out by a Buddhist mob. The question to be asked is whether that mob was acting on its own or at the instigation of or inducement by a third party. If a third party was involved then it would appear that that group intended to create a false Buddhist image for the attacks it was intending to carry out during Easter. The Anuradhapura incident must be investigated thoroughly.

Another line of inquiry should be to find out whether the Easter carnage has any link with ISIS or Al-Qaeda. The fact that no one has claimed responsibility so far does not allow one to dismiss the Middle East connection. More than one journalist from the Middle East was reporting that the ISIS has been dislodged but not entirely wiped out. It may be that President Trump was too quick to celebrate victory over ISIS and that US has once again blundered by allowing ISIS commanders and top soldiers to escape the net. That there were also Sri Lankans in the ISIS cadre is public knowledge. Earlier in Afghanistan, US allowed Al-Qaida to escape to Tora Bora caves, and today it is thriving in the conflict zones of the Middle East.  Similarly ISIS must be using its local link to carry out a revenge attack in Sri Lanka. If this is the case then Sri Lanka has fallen victim to the geopolitical manoeuvres in the Middle East.

If the Middle East connection is established then the next question is why choose Sri Lanka as target. The short answer is Sri /Lanka is extremely hospitable for visitors from the Middle East. Firstly, Sri Lanka’s links with Arab countries and particularly with Saudi Arabia have increased by several fold in recent times. Arab investments have been flowing inward, the number of Arab tourists have increased, Arab state officials have been frequenting on various missions and religious and cultural contacts between local Muslims and Arabs have increased.  Also, Arab philanthropy has led to the growth of madrasas and other cultural centres. Given this cosy atmosphere it became easier for foreign cult leaders, religious preachers and even criminals to enter the island without raising local suspicion.  Secondly, the country’s entire attention at the moment is focused on the forthcoming elections. The Prime Minister and his cabinet, the President and his party and the opposition and its supporters are all fighting over nominations and electioneering tactics and no one seems to care about the security of the country. Even the security forces are more interested in protecting politicians than the country. If not why wasn’t action taken when warnings of an imminent attack came days ago? Thirdly, the country is corrupt. It is easy for underworld leaders and terrorists to buy his/her way with money. How else can one explain the booming drug market in this country? Is it any wonder then that Sri Lanka has become the terrorist’s choice?

If there was no Middle East connection and the entire project was hatched and executed locally by the National Tawheed Jamaat (NTJ) as has been reported, are we to believe then that the government and community leaders were totally unaware of its operation? Whether NTJ is an off shoot of its parent Tawheed Jamaat (TJ), which has been in existence for years, or NTJ is entirely a new group, its activities could not have escaped the notice of All Ceylon Jamiyyatul Ulema (ACJU), SLMC and ACMC. The last two are in government and they need ACJU support to win elections. At least after the Mawanella bigotry Muslim community leaders should have been monitoring closely the growth of any extremist group and keep the authorities informed of its activities.  The fact that they failed to do this is not surprising given the government’s overall tolerance of politicised religions in the country.

Religionised politics or politicised religion everywhere and at all times is a destroyer of peace especially in plural societies. It was S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike, the founder of SLFP, who resorted to drag Buddhism into the whirlpool of politics. In fact, as Eugene Ford has shown in his Cold War Monks (Yale University Press, 2017), it was after studying Sri Lanka’s experience in harnessing Buddhism to win political battles, as in the 1956 General Elections, that even the American CIA decided to politicise Buddhism internationally to fight against Communism. Although SWRD paid the ultimate price for his political stupidity lessons were not learnt by his successors. The reckless use of religion in Sri Lankan politics has driven the country along a disastrous path causing irreparable damage to the country’s pluralist make up. Successive governments have sacrificed one of history’s exemplary illustrations, i.e., Sri Lanka’s rich cultural and religious pluralism, at the altar of short term electoral politics.

Muslim community did not bring religion into politics until the formation of SLMC. The establishment of this party at a time when the Muslim world outside was experiencing a form of religious revival was rather unfortunate. Because, since then religious slogans and religious emblems began to inaugurate the opening and ending of every public gathering and decorate the platforms of SLMC. In the Tamil districts of the country, the ethnic challenge by the LTTE was met with religious response by SLMC. This Islamised politics had a snowballing effect and SLMC had to tolerate even Muslim groups with ultra-orthodox views.

When SLMC became a kingmaker after the 1990 General Elections successive governments had to accommodate Islamised politics just as Sinhalese politicians continued to promote Buddhisized politics. Sinhalese leaders wanted the support of SLMC and ACMC, they in turn wanted the support of ACJU and ACJU covered every unsavoury element under its carpet. After 2009, when anti-Muslim riots broke out in Alutgama, Amapara and Digana for example, no stern action was taken against the un-Buddhist elements who were behind those riots. Once you allow one group to go unpunished in order to protect your vote bank how can you punish another from a different group whose vote bank is also crucial to Muslim parliamentarians who are on your side? This is the tragedy into which Sri Lankan politics has been pushed into and the Easter carnage is the horrendous manifestation of national leadership’s grand failure.

The writing was on the wall at least since 2013 when ISIS inaugurated its caliphate. Even before that, and since the 1979 Iranian Revolution Islam had become the ‘master signifier’ in Muslim politics. However, ISIS added an extremely violent dimension to it. That was a warning for all plural societies to monitor the growth of Islamism and prevent its negative impact on national life. The leaders of Sri Lanka cannot plead ignorance for their failure because ultra-conservative ideologies with detrimental effects to national peace and tranquillity were budding within the Muslim community and openly exhibiting their existence. Few intellectuals had warned about their activities and ideas in their writings and publications. Authorities seem to have ignored them, and innocent citizens are now paying the price for the rulers’ lethargy and indifference. These rulers are equally accountable as the manufacturers of this carnage.

It will take a long time to recover from the Easter mayhem. The economy is in peril.  In the short run, law and order has to be restored and security forces should protect every citizen without showing any partiality. In the long run however, the country needs a radical leadership transformation to confront and tackle its complex problems. The current leadership has proved its incompetency in several fronts. Where is the alternative?

Apologists for barbarous crimes of the beastly religion of Islam ike you, Ameen are more dangerous than the bastard animals who commit such cowardly animals. Ameen, your mask is off!
    /
You have surveyed the ancient and modern history, looking for rationalisation of this bastardy, and looking for others to blame. You have dragged SWRD Bandaranaike and others to the cesspit, and drawn a parallel between the Anuradhapura incident (a mere fire cracker compared to theis beastly massacre of 320) in your own murderous effort to look for scapegoats.
    /
Intellectually dishonest bastards like you, operating from the side lines of this terrorist manics who believe in an ‘eye for an eye’ evil philosophy preached by a known pedophile who claimed to be god’s prophet is shameful and dangerous. Repent, and prepare for the repercussions when you can keep complaining about violence against your ‘innocent’, peace loving minority Muslim community of Sri Lanka, and discrimination against the same mob.

The undisguised notion that only the interests of the Sinhala Buddhists matter has been the downfall of this country from the 1950’s.
The sooner everyone realizes that every citizen is equal and the administration of this country is geared to move in that direction the better for all of us, for if not this degeneracy will continue.
In justification I would like to ask anyone if the Indian intelligence advisory said that Buddhist temples were to be attacked, would we be in the present scenario?

      Sinhala Buddhist’s interests?
Muslim only schools, Shariah banking, Quasi courts, Muslim marriage law, Muslim only electorates whenever they ask for it, funding Madrasas by gov money are NOT Sinhala Buddhist interests. At least help the stupid Sinhala Buddhists to protect their temples in NE and rest of Muslim majority areas.

Dr. Amir Ali: You say: ” Those heartless and mentally deranged criminals who masterminded this mayhem have no religion, no morals and not even an iota of humanity”. Of course, needless to say it, because that is how they are and what they do. Now how do you identify all those who are tasked and responsible to protect the people from that class of criminals? In this particular incident aren’t all from the President down to the Law Enforcement personnel, “Heartless”; “Mentally Deranged”; “No Morales” and an “Iota of Humanity”? Having known much in ADVANCE (from April 09th) with all the details (dates, places, times & executioners by names) of the attack, all those personnel, I mentioned above CHOSE to be LETHARGIC and REFRAINED from the discharge of their duties and responsibilities. Even the “HEAD” of the Ministry of Defense – The “SECRETARY” to the Ministry says: “I DID NOT EXPECT AN ATTACK OF THIS MAGNITUDE”. What a “D….S…of a B..” he is to tell that to the PEOPLE of Sri Lanka? The IRONY is; He is still the “HEAD” of that Ministry? The Minister in charge of Defense, Security & Law Enforcement – the President is still the “PRESIDENT” of the country – the chosen “ONE” by 6,2 million voters. The VOTERS too are carrying on as usual. Is this a “COUNTRY” to be called “MY MOTHER COUNTRY” when “Heartless”; “Mentally Deranged” persons of “No Morales” and an “Iota of Humanity” are in Governance of the country’s affairs?

The equally stupid and Devil following terrorists, per Hadith of Najd, must have thought that, in this land of the stupids, where stupidity is a virtue nothing matters.

Once politicians run the country like they are sitting on their sofas at home, in luxury and with no concerns for the people they govern , and with free money, WHAT DO YOU’LL EXPECT?

These uneducated monkeys SHOULD HAVE CAUGHT THESE MURDERERS at least 2 weeks in earlier.

Instead poor Sri Lankans have to suffer from high inflation and now terrorism.

The blame lies with the politicians (All politicians whether they are in the government or not)

In the DailyMail UK report this was printed (see highlighted) Question is was politically correct liberalism of the new regime that stymied at least investigating the claims? simply basing it on the report. Were there cells already across the nation? Lots of people talk about Kattankudy.

In 2016, authorities were warned there would be a ‘blood bath’ by the head of radical Buddhist group BSS, Galagodaatte Gnanasara, if Razik was not arrested

Very clear now that the Government failed despite warnings. The partisan bickering between the nincompoop from Polonnaruwa, the uneducated President, and the haughty Colombo Feudal elite PM in their coalition government. has left the country totally mismanaged in terms of national security. I am pretty sure the Rajapakse regime would not have wasted time when Intel was provided by the Army and the Police as well about these maniac Islamic fascist terrorists.

ISIS claimed responsibility mate. Some of these Muslim Extremists were VERY RICH. Ibrahim is the #3 spice importer living in Million dollar apartments with BMW 5 series. The Shangri-La terrorist muslim ISIS man had a 100 man factor in Wellampitiya. So these were the rich privileged Muslims and not poverty stricken marginalized people. Your gig is up mate. You try to rationalized with Wahabi Islamic Saudi horseshit crap that is slowly seeing Kattankudy area Arabized. Burqas that NEVER existed in Ceylon 30 years ago and so much hate being preached openly by Muslim clerics and you write a bunch of words without for once mentioning Wahabi Salafist Muslim ideology. What is next? you will blame Buddha and Shiva next.

  • 11
    2

Trying to call them mentally deranged is a cover up for calling them for who they are ISIS is ISLAMIC STATE. These are Islamic terrorists of the Saudi Wahabi Salafist intolerant ideology that is now mainstay in Kattankudy. Arabization is complete in the East. They are not Buddhists nor Hindus and the targets were ALL CHRISTIANS mostly and westerners. Rich Islamic Terrorists blew themselves up. Not poor marginalized muslims. Eradicate this cancer by wiping out everyone who calls for killing in the name of Jihad or pack them off to Saudi Arabia.

Ameer Ali: I know you can not criticize your theology which supports such killings. So, do not talk about that instead blame everything. suicide bombers are rich people. What did they expect. Only problem is these suicide bombers are friends of PArliamentary politicians of both sides and one is a defeated JVP candidate another is a defeated UNP candidate. Meida revealed onlythe JVP candidate butnot aboutthe UNP candidate. Ask Azath Sally, Mugiber Rahman, Ranil etc.,

Muslims will now shed crocodile tears and say they condemn this they want to be united this and that. Don’t ever trust that. It’s all lies. They will never stop until this becomes a 90% majority country.

I had warned about all this right here in this forum many a times. Many of the rif-rafs here started calling me names and abused me in filth for warning about a day like this. I am a Veteran of the armed forces of Sri Lanka and fought at the frontlines. A man like me will never be deterred by filth used by scum bags. And when I warned the public here, what happened to my posts either they mysteriously vanished or they were falsely labelled as not abiding by forum guidelines.

Now my next warning is, don’t fall for these Muslim pranks of integration, unity and other hoaxes.

Who can expect even a terrorist outfit to commit such a heinous crime?

To hit back here, for somebody else for a crime committed somewhere else?

In that sense the president & defense secretary might be right.

ISIS; as they’ve taken the responsibility, cannot be a terrorist set, it must be a collection of mentally retarded individuals.

Catch them & treat in a hospital like Mulleriyawa mental hospital we have here; tell the US not to wage war against them.

tHE TITLE SAYS grand failure of the leadership. iN THIS CASE, THE book WHICH DOMINATED EVERYTHING.
if NOT WAS NOTBECZAUSE OF THE BUDDHIST PATIENCE things would have been different. Think about former Yugoslovia which was balkanized. How did they kill eachother christians versus muslims. We Sinhala people do not have any other culture which we can say “OK we can get adopted to that”. Muslims and the International society says get used to our crap and Because both groups need expansion.

    3

    Mr. Ali,
Apparently you haven’t looked around. All politicians are the same. They work for themselves not for the benefit of the people. Do you have any idea how the US leaders handled the intelligence report on 911 attacks?
Sri Lankans don’t need your condemnation on this now. What I want from you as a Muslim is to force every Islamic cleric to preach true Islam and teach them violence is not part of your religion. They need to come forward and publicly condemn violence and convince that doing a “good deed” for Islam is not killing other human beings as many clerics falsely preach.

Except for those criminal terrorists, the majority of Muslims are still reeling from the attack. We are shocked and devastated beyond belief. Not only did they attack our country and kill our brothers and sisters of various faith, they have attacked our religion. Now seeing the hate and racial comments which are being spewed across social media is adding insult to injury. It is as if these racial bigors were waiting for a chance to show their inner hatred and now they have the arena to vent it out. It is disheartening as We Are Innocent of this crime as you all now accuse us. Except for the terrorists who i do not speak for. Let them rot in hell. But 99.9 % of us only want peace and to go about our jobs and raise families same as every other Sri Lankan. We are in sorrow and grief as much as everyone and the only way to get past this is to unite. Whatever the haters say and believe i repeat this is the only way forward. If the majority insist on eradicating the minority Muslims in retaliation for a crime they did not commit, then there is no difference between them and those terrorists.

    • 2
      2

      Sri Lankan,
You say “Except for the terrorists who i do not speak for….”. Good for you. Then who speaks for them? Which Islamist encourage and brain wash them? Which Islamic clerics keep silent and interpret the Kuran as these kind of killings will be rewarded in Haven? If you are a Muslim you should take responsibility to be vocal against such and weed out these clerics rather than say I don’t speak for them. Do you know of any religious group other than Islam where followers kill humans based on their religious beliefs or for the sake of their religion?

Condemn all who deserve condemnation: Muslim fundamentalist terrorists and their supporters, our politicians – including by not limited to – RW,MS, MR, Mangala S., and our “civil society” groups that spout hatred: BBS, RSS, the various fundamentalist muslim groups with Arabic names, and the schools established by Saudi/Gulf states to indoctrinate SL muslims in their fundamentalist version of Islam that demean women and people of other faiths.

Ban missions from that preach fundamentalism of ANY kind – including Wahbbi, and protestant fundamentalism. Do not allow foreign organizations to run religious schools in Sri Lanka.

    Ameer,

I know you are in a difficult position to show sympathy with the victims. Dont despair as the fault lies with the Majority who have brought Sinhala Lanka to its knees after 70 years of brutality in which all the minorities suffered. Still there is no willingness on the part of the Majority to solve the ethnic issue. It might sound horrible but the Suicide Bombers were driven to take this dastardly action by the attacks on Mosques and Muslim businesses just lke we were forced to fight for survival. But the differenc is the LTTE never fought a religious war. Gotha the mass murderer chose to condemn but in my view he should be given life for his crimes.
Sri Lnka now faces a Stark choice . Either solve the ethnic promblem or face the dire consequences. I am sure the remanants of the LTTE must be emboldened with this vicious attack by ISIS. There will be mass arrests of Muslims and that will incense the Muslim population and will become a breeding ground for recruiting. The bruatlity by the forces with white van abductions will reach the muslim world and that will be catastrophic for Sri lankas economy. just as the tourist industry which has now been decimated and will take years to recover.
I hope the Majority will wake up and elect a moderate President and PM who will solve the Ethnic issue and save the country from disaster

You may ask the Muslim victims for their thoughts.

    Ameer:

I can see you are struggling to find a reason for the despicable act on Easter Sunday by linking the attack of a Church by the Bhuddist mob in Andhrapura with the attack by the Muslim suicide bombers of places of worship which is not acceptable. But there is a difference between the two and I would hasten to add I dont agree with either. Andharapura attack was carried out due to religious hatred and the suicide bombers might say their action was retribution. It is up to the Majority to seize the moment and rise above their racist atttude and prevent even more horricc attacks in the future.
I remember you recently posted an Article about how the Muslim Girls won the right to wear Hijab in a predominantly Hindu school. I chose not to comment as I am religiously tolerant man and if it was me I would have allowed the students to wear a Hijab which is beautiful head gear.
Let us hope that Sinhalese politicians would turn a new page in Sri Lankan History

“Muslim community did not bring religion into politics until the formation of SLMC. The establishment of this party at a time when the Muslim world outside was experiencing a form of religious revival was rather unfortunate. “
    +
The Muslims asserted their distinct identity since early last century; and there have been Muslim organizations from before independence, but demographic factors did not help them to become parties with parliamentary representation.
The Muslims, as a distinct ethnic group, deserve political representation which their earlier leaders failed to offer.
After independence, individuals were elected at the mercy of the big parties in the South and with support from the Tamil voters initially and the dominant Tamil party from 1956, the FP, which ceased to represent Muslim interests by the 1960s.
Opportunity came their way with the PR scheme in 1978 that enabled Muslims to win more seats in the East than possible under the FPP earlier. Ashroff grasped it, but his opportunism led to the failure of the SLMC as a viable political force.
Islamic revival made an impact on Muslims in different ways in different countries; and it is dangerous to oversimplify matters in the interest of a coherent image.

[The LTTE conducted a vicious anti-Muslim campaign to justify their expulsion from the North.
SL Tamils are unfortunately misled by their media and politicians who encourage bigotry.]

lt was a direct result of their spying while living among them as brothers and sisters. At one time there were Muslims in FP and later even in the LTTE, may be for spying. They sabotaged every step that was taken to bring some peace to the SL minority. Their mother tongue Tamil was used to sabotage Tamil emancipation. They for long played a nice game of here and there but now their slip is showing to ordinary foolish sinhalas. These guys learnt a good lesson shortly after LTTE was defeated by them getting hammered by Sinhala Buddhist gangs. Though they become heavily economically advantaged after the Tamils being marginalised in every sphere including politics they were not smart enough to understand the Sinhala Brain! So now they have decided to go against entire Sri Lankans to make a Islamic State. In the East it is already there led by a extremist CM.

    Dear Ameer Ali

I remember a happy visit with my husband Senake B, to your home in Katankudy in the late 1970s. You were so welcoming and we were delighted to meet your family. I still have a beautiful red + black cotton sari bought from a textile printing centre you took us to.

I am greatly saddened now by an article in today’s Daily Mirror which highlights what a hotbed of fundamentalism Katankudy has become. I hope that this awful tragedy that has stunned us all will precipitate action to defeat Wahabism which many of our Muslim brothers + sisters have been struggling against in vain for so long.

Sri Lankans must join hands to combat the slightest appearance of communalism, as well as the temptation by our political leaders to take advantage of a situation they hope to benefit from.

True the NTJ Terrorist outfit was born in Kattankudy and its so-called suicide bombers are All LUNATICS. But, that does not make Kattankudy a ” hotbed of fundamentalism” because the people of Kattankudy were strongly Opposed to the NTJ. No wonder, the LUNATICS who joined the NTJ were, according to the ACJU, just about 100, around half of whom were later reformed and left the NTJ.

So. the NTJ is a tiny group of Madcaps who will be not difficult to be eliminated if the Govt. and Authorities act Firmly. Lets hope that the Govt. Stops pussy footing and acts with Determination and root them out soon from Sri Lanka so that we can all live in Peace and Harmony..

      Muhandiram, I stand corrected.

In fact, I realised my error when I re read my post after sending it. Of course, Kattankudy is NOT a hotbed ….. And it IS clear that the Muslim community there as a whole is unhappy about these encroachments.

I apologize sincerely for my misrepresentation.
