All 13 shops of the Muslims in Elpitiya are legally owned by Sinhalese but have been given on annual rent. The legal agreements are renewed every year. According to the Colombo Telegraph sources the Bodu Bala Sena has approached the legal owners of the Muslim establishments in Elpitiya and directed them not to extend their leases. All Sinhala owners of the shops have informed the Muslim businessmen to return the vacant shops, after the conclusion of the annual rent. Elpitiya will then be “liberated” according to Bodu Bala Sena.
Bodu Bala Sena conducted a meeting on 29th March in Elpitiya. BBS ordered all Shops and Restaurants to close from 11.00 a.m. and shop owners were asked to attend their procession white cloth and join their public meeting in the town. There are 13 shops operated by Muslims and they remained closed throughout the day, in expectation of violence.

Although hagiographies written within Sri Lanka avoid the issue, the foundation of the Siam Nikaya was closely linked to both the aristocratic and caste politics of its era, including an attempted coup d’etat that is unusually well-documented, due to the interaction of the colonial Dutch and the king of Kandy at the time:
The plot of 1760, occurred during the reign of Kirti Sri Rajasinha and shortly after the formal beginnings of the Siyam Nikaya in 1753. One group within the local aristocracy conspired to overthrow the king and to place a Siamese prince on the throne. The leaders are said to have included not only key lay administrators but also some of the leading Siyam Nikaya monks. Valivita Saranankara, founder of the Siyam Nikaya, and his chief student were named among the conspirators. The plot was discovered, the Siamese prince deported with a reluctant assistance of the Dutch, and the lay administrators executed.” [Anne M. A Buddhist knows this, and a Buddhist mind is something one inherits through cultivation of the dharma within the mind over lifetimes – it is not something that comes to you from birth into a particular nationality, because I have plenty of ‘Buddhist’ friends who want nothing to do with their faith or who just practice the rituals without the actual necessary realisations. Being born in a Buddhist environment merely means one get a first-hand introduction to the teachings of the Buddha, but whether one makes use of those teachings will depend on the karma of the individual and the effort they are willing to put into their practice. Lester, why do you keep on harping about the Muslims. If it is on behalf of Buddhism, best for you put your own mind in order first. If it is on behalf of Sri Lanka and the preservation of the Sinhala race, you still need to learn the dhamma, because it will teach you the true nature of your people and all other people, and once you really realise this, you will stop hanging so desperately onto your views.

If you look at the Muslim Population in Sri Lanka, it is the Muslims who are the least burden to our economy. They came here for Trade and still many of them remain as traders and businessmen while paying taxes to the Govt. to run our country.
My Brother in Law, after 30 years as a distributor for a leading company had to terminate his business due to heavy additional taxes been imposed by GOSL. Therefore it is very hard for a local to do business in Sri Lanka today other than Govt.giving more concessions to foreign Investors than to local population to attract foreign investments.
Sinhalese were never born Traders, but were mere service providers and administrators to the kings, while many were farmers.
Taking over a known trade run by Muslim Traders and giving them to un trained, unqualified, inexprienced people will further ruin Sri Lanka’s Business and Trade and will finally ruin the whole industry.
As I highlighted before now all of you will agree as to who really run our country and who really control our Government, economy, society and foreign relations.

Muslims (Sonakar) should learn from their experience. All these days they were lead by opportunists and collaborated with Sinhala racist politicians who were anti-tamil. The whole world knows what happened to Tamils during the last six years: It is a complete destruction and none of the Tamil civilian will ask for anything. Muslims thought that they will continue to get same benefits as before LTTE defeat but now it is their turn to get the same treatment as happened to Tamils over the six decades. You must understand none of the Sinhala politician will dare to go against Sinhala Buddhist Monks. They are superior species and even Buddha cannot stop them. Most of The SriLankan leaders are Buddhists converted Christian and re converted to Buddhists.
It is time for Muslims to realise the nature of threat they face and they should blame themselves for the current status. They should realise that Tamil is their mother tongue and North and East of Sri Lanka is their traditional homeland. It is not too late to become part of your motherland and face the threat together with Tamils. It is the safe place for both communities. You should recognise that the past differences between Tamils and Muslims are created by a third force (Sinhala)and it is not due to rivalry between you. Although I cannot agree with all the negative reasons given by Ajith concerning the plight of the Muslims I would say that Muslims are now at the receiving end because the community as a whole lacks ‘political awareness’ and this weakness is being exploited by a few who have self-appointed themselves as ‘political leaders’ of the community for their own self interest but do not ‘honestly and sincerely’ represnt the interests of the Muslim community’ These leaders always align themselves only with the major political parties which, in the current political trend, seek to form Govts. alternatively. These leaders do not give any idea to the community of widening its engagement with other political parties, either of the left or the right and even the Tamils parties. The civil society leadership of the comunity too does not think of engaging with civil society organisations of other communities who generally work for the welfare and benefit of all communities irrespective of communal or religious differences. Due to these factors the Muslim community remains isolated and do not attract the suppport of political parties or the civil society. Now thanks to the BBS, JHU and the like, the ‘communal pinch’ given by them to the Muslims is beginning to show positive reaction from the Muslims and there seems to awakening to the realilies and the need for the community to re-think of their political and social alliances and move in a new direction.

I went through a 30 yr civil war which put our country 30 years behind .Left the country whn i was a teen and now a citizen of a foreign country paying my taxes there ..Why purely because we had no oppurtunity of the upcoming youth .

Most of us are missing the point when we attack the BBS. I believe that the ideological violence that the BBS unleashing on the minority is a only a mirror of what is happening in the midst of us. Without tacit support at a broader societal level such extremism cannot survive. While the elite in the cities may not endorse the tactics adopted by the BBS, there is patent apathy among the elite and the literati.
We need to understand that Sri Lanka has a long way to go before we can claim to have achieved equity and equality for all our citizens. This is because our political and social fabrics have not changed since independence. We began our independence as a divided nation and continue to practice those same divisive policies along language, Caste and religious lines.
We have adopted and institutionalized a system that segregates minorities from the majority and are vehemently against dismantling a political systems that favours segregation. No politician would dare touch a system that can be perceived as going against the majority.
An aggrieved majority is potential cauldron of social unrest. the legacy of invasion and occupation has let an indelible “victim complex” among majority Sinhalese; the majority feeling and behaving like the minority. Political expediency plays on these fears.
Because of this appeasement of the majority, minority representation is disproportionately skewed towards the majority in many branches of government. This is particularly so in the defense and security establishment with hardly any Muslim and Tamil representation. Many officers retire early due to various machinations.
Muslims particularly have been at the butt end of discrimination particularly in the field of education. Colombo and Kandy have large populations of Muslims. One would expect to have a few decent schools for them in these two cities of the caliber of Dharmaraja or a Nalanda. Muslims politicians Marhooms A C S Hammeed & Ashraff the former Minister of Foreign Affairs the leader of the Muslim Congress respectively who took up the issue with the relevant authorities were promised Boys School in Kandy and Colombo by the late President Premadasa and President Kumaranatunga respectively at different points in time. Both projects never took of the ground due to protests by Buddhists.
It would be interesting to note reasons for this lack of interest among the politicians of this country.
While Muslims have little or no access to good schools,they are at disadvantage at getting government jobs as well. As a result Muslims have taken to self-employment. Muslims get into any form of self-employment from driving three wheelers to running grocery shops to earn a living. It appears that this is angering the majority community.
Our religious practices too have come under attack, for reasons best known to the majority. Muslim places of worship occupy the least amount of space, have no furniture and fittings and probably cost the least to build. Admittedly Muslims congregate to pray, creating perhaps a sense of unease among non-Muslims; the worry and lament I have heard and often from the Monks I know is this “Why can’t we get our people to come to the temple like you all do”.
All this points to one salient fact; instead of finding commonalities across communities, and looking for accommodation, we have mastered the art of divisiveness. Instead equity and equality we foster one-upmanship!
We will remain a divided nation as long as we have institutionalized divisiveness. Unless we have a secular constitution, unless we dismantle religion and language based schools and unless we stop ethnicity based job allocations, we will continue to decline decay as a country.
The minority can do little to change the process of degeneration that has set in; if we do we would be perceived as a bigger threat. It is the majority that has to dig deep and examine the Sinhala Buddhist ethos to find out what ails them. Until we find the cause we will not find a cure.
Unfortunately Elpitiya is only a symptom of that deep malaise that afflicts our country.
