respects to the dead monk. until now i was under the impression that it was a staged drama of a fake self sacrifice. i was of the opinion that this act stands nowhere compared to the acts of tileepan of ltte, and to that of those who set themselves on fire in tamilnadu to draw attention to the human rights violations in sri lanka.
but now it turns out that it was a staged drama, perfectly video taped by a living person, of a real self sacrifice. whatever the intention was, whatever the clarity of the goals were, this man’s death happened for those animals that couldn’t speak for themselves. but those who take it as an opportunity to raise their racist voices against cattle slaughter should also think about where the rest of their non-veg food comes from. also the modern ingredients of their fast moving consumer goods. after all, humanity is not yet advanced enough to make edible synthetic meat or to rely on the meat of naturally dead animals. the strange fact is that those against cattle slaughter are all for fishery, which is nothing less than killing animals by suffocation and is actually more animals killed per plate (worst case with haal messo) compared to a very small fraction of a cow per meal per person.
i have always had respect for vegetarians who argue against killing animals for food. the rest, i would simply ignore as racially motivated or as products of childhood indoctrination of mythology or as religious extremists. if not, why then there is so much noise only about cows? no problem eating chicken, sheep, goat, fishes and prawns? why aren’t those trades banned in panadura or kandy, the sacred city? this is nothing different from arguments raised by certain buddhist clergymen against ideas towards local production of ammunition during war times – it’s okay to import weapons and ammunition at high cost and kill humans, but no production of weaponry in the holy buddhist land!
some say cows were the friends of agricultural civilizations. but i have seen how much of painful slavery cows are subjected to by the conventional agricultural civilization of this land. my grand father had a farm of cows, and i know how much suffering a cow endures while it’s branded, and that’s the status quo even today!

All those who clamour for the banning of cattle slaughtering themselves very well know that the Govt. cannot do it as such a ban will have severe economic consequences to the people, mostly Buddhists, who are rearing cattle and maintain dairy farms for their living. And it is mostly the Buddhists who earn a living by transporting the cattle to the butchers who happen to be mostly Muslims. The other economic benefits are the revenues received from the licences issued for the transport of cattle, the income earned from the sale of fuel to the vehicles that transport, the taxes that the Govt. earns, etc. etc. So there is a chain of economic benefits from the time of rearing cattle and the consumptions of the meat. If slaughtering is totally banned, which is never going to happen, there will be a chain of economic losses. If at all a banning comes into effect there is no doubt that the Buddhists who depend on cattle rearing will turn against those who are clamouring for the ban.

i being a vegetarian would welcome the banning of animal slaughter. however, vegetarians are few and far between in sri lanka and the dead meat eaters can’t manage without dead meat on their plate.

The difference between thugs and sorry to say some monks is the yellow/red Robes.
Having said that there are most monks who are intelligent, intellectual and well disciplined.
How these two types of monks differ is first take to thuggery and other resort to buddhas teachings. Goes with the first that if ignorant is a bliss then its foolish to be wise. So let me show my foolish forte by displaying my thuggery.

Don’t talk Bullshit man.Read our History. During Kings era thare were many familied designated to supply him meat.
Read the history which say how one supplier failing to catch a Goat subsequently killed a human and served the King and the King found it so tasty that he ordered to supply the same meat every day……until his cook found a human finger with the meat he supplied.
Remember Knowledge and reading is Power.
There are Lions, Tigers, Piranhas, snakes, crocodiles in the Dehiwala ZOO that are looking for flesh Dana.

/
Jayantha / May 30, 2013
M.Sivananthan,
I hope you are a tamil and I wonder If you have read our history enough to come into your Judgment to call me a fool.
Remember small brain and half learning is dangerous and I presume you are one of them.
Please check archives of Sunday Observer Newspaper 45 to 50 years back, or call them to check on this article.
This op-ed said about a Sri Lankan King who got likened to eat human flesh that his butcher supplied until his cook found a human finger in the meat.
The story went like this. This butcher who supply meat to king could not find an animal and killed a human and cleaned the flesh and gave to Cook to prepare meal to the king.
After eating human flesh which King found so tasty, ordered the butcher to supply same meat in future. Thereafter the butcher supplied human flesh to kings Palace cook, until one day the cook found a human finger.
I cannot remember how the story ended. But Remember this.
1)Kings had several Butchers who supplied Meat to kings Palace.
2)Once the king got the taste of the human flesh, he ordered this butcher to supply him meat.
3)Also Kings went on animal hunting.
4)You say Kings did not killed Cows. May be true. But it was the Butcher who supplied meat to the king, and our history never say that kings did not eat Cow meat.
5)Both Veddhas and Kings eating habits were same except kings were worst criminal and cruel murderers who kept their citizens under constant fear and suppression. Read the histories to check what type of punishments Kings gave including King Kassayapa, Sri Wickrema Rajasimha, Ehalepola etc, and rest of the murderers.
Also talk to Mervin Silva or get reference from Sunday Observer Newspapers.
Good luck. Remember little Knowledge is Dangerous.

Whenever a terrorist suicide cadre killed himself,
sometimes taking the lives of others, the LTTE said
he or she “made the supreme sacrifice.”
Now after Indraratna Thera’s death, JHU’s Champika
Ranawaka and Golaya Udaya Gammanpilla are saying this
too is a supreme sacrifice.
One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter.
So now, the Buddhist clergy are the new freedom fighters
for the Buddhists. They want to achieve their ends not
through the hallowed principles of Dhamma but by just
suicide.
And all those monkeys who support such moves and argue
they are right have only brains the size of a peanut. But
their ego is heavily bloated.

Why waited 30 years until Gen.Sarath Fonseka ended the war to show your Supreme Sacrifice when our Soldiers were getting killed daily.
Why they did not do this Supreme sacrifice by been a suicide bomber then.
We all witnessed in 1987 how the Yellow Robes running in the streets leaving their slippers and lifting their robes high shouting “Koti Enawa”. Photos were also published in the Newspapers.

In case nobody noticed it yet this monk is not really a monk but a thug with a criminal background. An arrest warrant was issued for his arrest just days before the incident. Burning Mosques, a church and a police station are some of the acts he was involved in. He was given state protection in each one of these incidents by none other than the despicable SOD. He belonged in jail. He will not attain anything in death of that I am very sure. His act is nothing but cheap theater aimed at the stupid and gullible public orchestrated by the regime. This diverts the attention away from what is really happening in the country.

Whom did Ven Bowatte Indraratna follow?
Is it the teachings of Lord Buddha or
Velupillai Prabhakaran?
Lord Buddha never advocated suicide. His
savants Patali Champika Ranawaka and Udaya
Gammanpilla, are they true Buddhists? If
so, would they call the suicide “supreme
sacrifice”?
That is what Prabhakaran calls his suicide
cadres who die.
Look at the simple logic, if you want to. If
you slaughter (legitimately) one cow, it feeds
over 150. Ban them and only allow chicken
slaughter. You will kill a minimum of 30 birds
30 lives.
Ban all the liquor sales outlets. Who will profit?
The kasippu karayas. Ban slaughter. Who will profit?
The illicit abbatoirs. Not only that. They will begin
killing more deer, sambhur, wild boar and wild buffalo.
You can give a contract to a ruling party Pradeshiya
Sabha member and they will deliver it to you at home?
Those who are unaware, just check with the CID what
Ven. Indraratne’s hobbies were? He spent a lot of money
on them.

This Indraratne Thero Joined Sasana at age of Nine (9).
He has something like two other brothers and a sister.
His Father was dead and mother raised him and others alone.
According to common sense he would would have Joined Sasana on Economic reasons.
How can a nine year old decides to be a Buddhist Priest and to Join Sasana, when Lord Buddha himself selected only after having all the fun as a King and after bearing two children to his wife and leaving the fun in the Harem.
I know when we were small many of us like to Join Police or Army. But they won’t recruit you until you are 19 Years old.
May be in future both Army and Police should allow the age group of Seven (7) years and up to join as Police and Army Training students giving free Schooling, Board and Lodging.

No Matter what you brand it anyone who takes their life are have no way of justification as amoral conduct or ,it is for a great cause ,nor sacrifice , they are mentally ill(I am not being sarcastic mental illness is in o way to be treated or looked as a mockery we never know who is mentally ill and how bad it is unless a specialist confirms it.
Anyways all people weather activist or terrorist or freedom fighters if the take a cyanide ,blow themselves up along with innocent people around them or set themselves aflame are all suffering from ultimate frustration of mental illness untreated not aware ,social workers with due respect to whatever they are doing ,need to do lot more , especially in countries that has been in war , they need to urgently approach the psychiatrists, psychologists with government and UN support and attend to this, before thinking of rebuilding the nation they need to rebuild the minds of people and put it right these people are who have suffered for decades from fear ,loss of family members, rape ,torture, abductions ,loss of property and livelihood .
my final conclusion is still the same anyone who takes their own lives are mentally sick and need attention.Period,

Fahim,
I truly agree with you. But do you thing that our Maha Eka is unaware of this……
There were many occassions after 30 year war that UN offered Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)to our armed forces, their families, the people who lost their loved ones, captured LTTE carders and Tamil Refugees etc.
But our Government refused all these offers and councelling. These won’t bring in Commissions to Big ones coffers. So no go.
Many problems could follow in the future.
When it comes to Commissions, nothing will be undertaken or offered without the pound of flesh.
China knowing this, from now on will not release any money to Rajapakse’s hand and will supervise all the projects they uyndertake which will amount to around 2.2 Billion Dollars which President signed today.
China showed Rajapakse’s in future that he cannot “Kane Arinna Bae” fool and cheat them.
Good show. Keep going.

What a shame a buddist monk taking his life for a cow. Animals are slaughtered every where in this world. This is not new. Taking your own life is a sin in any religon. He has not achived anything by doing what he did. Being a buddhist country sri lanka has a very violent past. Lets hope people put their mind in to something that can be achived rather than getting media attention to this kind of acts.
