The Chulipuram house of TNA candidate Ananthi Elilan was surrounded by soldiers and EPDP personnel and attacked, reported Tamil Win. The following are extracts in translation.

Seeing this, her supporters, friends and neighbors had come to her defence and the goons had run away. The people who came to her aid forced her to move to a safe-house but nonetheless following that the goons returned to attack those who saved her. Eight of the supporters were badly injured. Ananthi informed reporters that some of them had broken heads, and others broken legs; and vehicles too were injured. Among the injured were Attorney-at-Law Subash who heads CaFFE (Campaign for Free and Fair Elections), the election monitoring agency.
At 2:10 AM TNA MPs Mavai Senathirajah, MA Sumanthiran and E. Saravanabavan visited the scene. They were joined by Elections Commission member Achuthan and other election observers.
Informing LankaSri about the incident, Sumanthiran and Ananthi stated that with the purpose of defeating Ananthi the Army is engaged in a lot of propaganda, spreading false stories. One such story is that her husband of the LTTE who had disappeared after surrendering to the army, had in fact been released and therefore Ananthi was no longer a candidate. As such, the bogus story claimed, there was no need to vote for her. Other sections had argued that Elilan is a murderer and therefore Ananthi does not deserve a vote.
The TNA has affirmed that Ananthi is still a candidate without any doubt and that her number is 1 under the TNA on the ballot paper.
Similar stories have also been created against the Chief Minister candidate C.V. Wigneswaran.
Correction; The information about Attorney Kanakaratnam Sugash is not correct. He is the PAFFREL head in Jaffna and not CAFE. In his statement to police he had specifically said that it was the military who attack them. In fact a second round of military vehicles came to abduct the victims but it failed because Sugash was there. We apologise for the error.

What do the Colombo NGO ladies who are milking donors for overseas jaunts but silent about MILITARIZATION of Sri Lanka have to say about this attack on a woman candidate?! Asleep on the job I suppose!
Women’s NGOs in Colombo are presenting northern women as victims and shed tears to get funds for UN conferences on GBV, but have not done public awareness to DEMILITAIRZE Nor do they criticize the international donors who have been actively supporting or silent about the post-war MILITARIZATION by Gota the war criminal. The donors keep the women’s NGOs happy and they praise the donors who are helping militarize Lanka.. Wheels within wheels.. Trips to racist Aussie and all that Jazz for the women and media show..
India and China are militarizing Lanka because of their own interest but this is bad for Democracy Within. women’s NGOs should call for mother Lanka to be a “demilitarized zone of peace in the Indian Ocean”, now that the LTTE is gone. The World Bank and IMF are funding Ministry of Defense via the UDA. This MUST BE STOPPED and WB closed down! UN expert in DDR – Demobilizing and reintegrating militaries after conflict also are silent on the need to DOWNSIZE and right size the military of Sri Lanka.
Time for women’s organizations to speak in one voice- loud and clear – Sri Lanka needs a ROAD MAP FOR DEMILITARIZATION TO RESTORE DEMOCRACY and donors need to help civil society rather than funding that clown and NGO ladies Vasu’s Ministry – who hasn’t got a clue about social integration..

The Army spokesperson has come out with a blanket denial that their well disciplined men will never resort to such dastardly act. As another daily newspaper puts it, it should be the work of some others in Army Uniform while thousands of genuine Army men are also in the North. This is a serious situation.I think Major Hathurusinghe (or someone in his uniform) should take immediate action to find these ‘others’ and safeguard the name of our valiant army men. Remember this is not Haiti but Sri Lanka. We can’t wait for the UN to take action after their investigations. It will take years and it will be too late.

Thus he did not monitor the counting of votes.
