Frontline Socialist Party Leaders Arrested Over Kumar Gunaratnam Protest Incident

Two Members of the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) Pubudu Jayagoda and Sujith Kuruwita were arrested today for forcibly entering and damaging the Department of Immigration and Emigration on April 1, 2016, during a protest demanding for the release of Kumar Gunaratnam, the party’s leader.

Pubudu JagodaThe members, including Jayagoda, who is the secretary of the FSP was arrested when they arrived at the police to give a statement in connection to the protest.

On April 1, a group of supporters of Kumar Gunaratnam, leader of the Frontline Socialists Party entered the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo by force, damaging property while protesting against the sentencing of Gunaratnam, who violated the country’s immigration laws.

The protestors, including members of the Frontline Socialist Party, as well as university students, clashed with the police opposite the department, before making their way forcibly into the department, demanding Gunaratnam’s immediate release.

Gunaratnam was sentenced to one year imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 50,000 for violating immigration laws, after he overstayed his one month tourist visa.

Meanwhile, Jagoda and Kuruwita who were arrested this morning were released on bail.

    I think this bunch of people must be referred to Angoda Mental facility to undergo a specialized treatment procedure. Sooner the better. It would also be interesting to do a research study to ascertain how they make a living and from where they get the money to get engaged in this disruptive campaigns.

    Well this is politics in Sri Lanka.

    If you are on the wrong side of the party politics then this is what will happen. Our long tradition in victimising political opponents continues under yamapalanaya.

    If you want proof there are any number of Visa overstayers in Sri Lanka who do not get arrested nor go to jail.

    And JVP is also silent in this matter. FSP is not the JVP isn’t it though both profess the same line of socialism or communism.
