It is well-known that US has taken a lead role in combating, and sometimes fostering Islamic extremism in many parts of the world. Its support for the Taliban in Afganistan by arming them against the Soviets is well known. The US has also supported Islamic groups to create tension is some African states to counter other tendencies.
In many of these moves, and in some of its UN lobbying, the US uses third parties to cover its hand. Norway has figured prominently as one of the not-so-hidden hands of Western foreign policy in this regard. Canada and Britain have figured in extraordinary renditions of prisoners who were whisked away for torture by US agents operating in other countries.
In Sri Lanka, Western policy was directed through the secessionist politics of the Tamil Nationalism. This provided a stage for global capitalism to move in, with Ranil Wickremasinghe and Chandrika Kumaratunga willing partners. However, this agenda was thwarted by the rise of the Rajapaksa government which exploited the growing anger of the majority of the country that realized that the carpet is being pulled from under them, with the sovereignty and decision making in the country passing into the hands of Norway, Japan, India and internationally funded NGOs.
Rajapaksa used a policy of dividing up the opposition and offering perks to woo support, to bring most of the Sinhala polity as well as the Muslims behind him. Using a large cabinet to shield the weakness of his minority government, Rajapaksa won a war that had been declared `un-winnable’ by the West which funded the Tamil Tigers, and harboured individuals like Anton and Adele Balasingham who openly supported programs declared by the UN to be crimes against civil societies.
Western analysts realized that until and unless the Sinhala polity is divided, the Western program cannot go ahead. The Tamil nationalist program thrived in the last three decades only because the Sinhalese were divided equally between the United National party (center right) and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (center left). The US keeps track of Islamic groups and knew of the Wahabist-Islamic incursions in Sri Lanka, and the growing resentment against it among certain nationalist sections of the Sinhalese.
The strategists in the Pentagon invoke their standard formula for situations like this. It lines up its defense establishment with the defense establishment of the target country (Sri Lanka), and gets one of its henchmen (e.g., Norway) to support the anti-Islamic radical groups at a variety of levels. This has been done not only by the so-called “one-shot” support given to the BBS, but also by giving financial aid to selected Buddhist temples. This is the standard approach to buying up political support where there is none.
In effect, the West needs a Buddhist NGO in Sri Lanka, just as it needed an Islamic NGO in Afghanistan against the Soviets. However, here it is playing a more subtle game, check-mating the Wahabi Islamists in Sri Lanka, gaining support from a section of Buddhists, while alienating and diminishing the power of the Jathika-Hela Urumaya that led the vanguard against Norway at Mavil Ara, and actually fielded Buddhist monks at Sri Lankan elections. Thus the rise of the BBS fits in very well with the strategy of the West.
However, some members of the Rajapaksa government, as well as some leaders of the Buddhist political program are clever strategists. They have realized that they too can use (the covertly western-supported) anti-Islamism of the BBS to their own advantage in winning back some of the assets that have been encroached upon by Islamist expansion. This is of course a popular move among the Sinhala nationalist merchant class which is prepared to compromise on Buddhist teachings for a bit more of Buddhist hegemony.
Sri Lankan Buddhists do not have a strong moral figure like the Dalai Lama who successfully maintained the Tibetan effort against China on the high moral road for many decades. Now, the Dalai Lama has retired from that struggle and how it will spiral onwards is any-body’s guess. The Dalai Lama has expressed his sadness about the events in Sri Lanka and Burma, but it is easy to dismiss him as being mis-informed. Indeed, he is not informed about these events per se. He is making his statements based on the general principles of Buddhism that demand that every matter be solved by discussion, compromise and compassion, without violence. That is the high moral road that the Buddha indicated to the Lichchavi kings in regard to governance, some 26 centuries ago, with his seven rules.
The BBS is a militant group which in effect implies that Buddhist principles have to be re-enforced by strong-arm tactics. Some church fathers as well as Western anti-Islamists who have been irked by Islam’s inroads all over the world are delighted by the new developments. They don’t have to openly sully their hands!
The withdrawal of Muslim support from the Rajapaksa government is also attended with glee by Western strategists who noted how Rajapaksa had used such support in UN fora for thwarting international sanctions against his government.
The western NGOs that existed in Sri Lanka so far have been headed by Tamils, Christians, or noted international wheeler-dealers. If the BBS can become a Southern Sinhalese NGO that can be manipulated by the West, an immediate objective of the West would be achieved.
However, some of the leaders of the BBS may prove to be artful individuals who may not necessarily tow the line of the West, just as the Taliban NGOs created in Afghanistan by the West some decades ago morphed into anti-Western agents. However, the Taliban had enough middle-eastern financial backers when the West withdrew its support. In contrast, the BBS will dry up and loose steam, as soon as it looses its financial backing.
Here we have to look at the JHU that has become a dormant entity when its financial support dried up with the JHU becoming a compliant partner of the Rajapaksa politics of accommodating all and `shaping up’ problems instead of solving them according to the rule book.

What is Nalanda University? It is believed to be the world’s first University and the largest Buddhist one at that. Situated in east of Patna in Bihar, India it accommodated over 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers from Korea, Japan, China, Tibet, Indonesia, Persia and Turkey in its heyday. Subjects covered included science, astronomy, medicine and chiefly metaphysics and philosophy. Nagarjuna, a Mahayana philosopher; Dharmapala- the Brahmin scholar, taught there; Hieun-Tsang, famous Chinese traveller and scholar stayed there. The university library had been the most renowned repository of Buddhist knowledge anywhere and its collection was said to comprise hundreds of thousands of volumes.
What happened to it? A Man named Bakhtiar Khilji, a military General of Qutb-ud-din Aybak a Turkic king who ruled part of India from Delhi ransacked Nalanda and set fire to it in 1193. The university is said have burned for months.
Why do a military General want to desecrate and burn a peaceful and a serene monastery? To answer that question you’ll have understand the religion of the General and his gang who burned it; Islam. You’ll have to understand the mentality of a devout Islamist. And for that you have to download copy of the Koran and read it. Monks at Nalanda never knew about teachings in Koran Sunnah or Hadith. They were concerned only about eightfold path to Nirvana. There were no Ganasaras or shaolin monks there at the time. So, no monks couldn’t be ready to face the Muslim assault. And they all fled India in Toto. Soon Buddhism had disappeared from its place of birth in the face of a crazy religious zealots. I wish to re-iterate the well authenticated instructions given by the first Caliph Abu Bakr, as per the instructions of the Prophet, to the commander Yazid bin Abu Sufiyan on the code of war.
If that damned and wicked general followed his own evil lusts, then Islam cannot be blamed same as Buddhism cannot be blamed for what is happening in Burma, for the behavior of the BBS and the writings of the mountebank Leela.
Suffering such inhumanity is not singular to Buddhists. The Muslims, men women and children, were slaughtered by the Christians in the crusades till, it was reported by the Christians themselves, they had to wade in an ankle depth of blood to walk through. Even in our own motherland, our suffering at the hands of the Portugese is well recorded.
Leela also pretends to be well versed with the Quran. Often you will read him railing against it mentioning that 90%, 60% of the verses are against the non believers, exhorting the Muslims to kill. What rubbish! He always conveniently omits the context so as not to get exposed. So please be warned Leela having defrauded the purses of people is trying to defraud their minds!

Free your mind of ignorance and be anxious to learn the truth, especially in the one thing that is needful, lest you fall a prey either to scepticism or to errors. Scepticism will make you indifferent and errors will lead you astray, so that you shall not find the noble path that leads to life eternal.”

It may come as a shock to most people who comment here but I believe BBS ample support among the overseas Buddhist community and Buddhists in Sri Lanka as well. I have talked to a few people, and they believe an organisation like BBS in necessary to stop the “threat” posed by Muslims. They all see an increased visibility of Muslims in more radicalised form. To get the other side of the story I had a chat with a Muslim from a well known family in Sri Lanka. His view is that Muslims who go to Middle East for work are becoming fundamentalists due to indoctrination my more radical Muslims from other countries. When they come back they wear more traditional dresses and live a more orthodox Islamic lifestyle that has become alien to most Sri Lankans. Although, none of this justify the appalling behaviour of BBS in the name of Buddhism, it is however another angle to ponder and may need more action by moderate Muslims in Sri Lanka.

Some Muslims and anti Buddhist commentators and writers here, think abusing and degrading BBS monks and commentators like me would cover up their foul play. They cannot engage in a straight dialogue. The moment we question their Koran, Muhammad or Allah, they get agitated.
You got only part of the story when your Muslim associate told you that Muslims who go to Middle East for work are becoming fundamentalists due to indoctrination by more radical Muslims from other countries. There is more truth in to it than that. Actually, Sri Lank Muslim clerics were sent to Medina and King Abdul Aziz Universities of Saudi to indoctrinate them on true Islam meaning how to interpret the Koran verses the correct way. In short, they become Sunni Wahhabis in the end. Bin Laden is such a Sunni Wahhabi Islamist. I bet those two that set the Boston bomb must be true Islamists as well. They are all been trained under ‘Wahhabis’. Google it, and you can read about it.
Whether we like it or not, Wahhabi Islam has become the trend among Muslims in Sri Lanka for sometime now. Go to Kathankudy; you’ll feel you are in Saudi. By and by we started to feel this cultural and religious invasion not just in Kathnkudy but in Colombo and suburbs as well.
Ayman: Show up your face, man and woman, we don’t worry what colour is your dress. I do not mind you donned in Japanese Amude or Sri Lankan Amude, but I do feel uneasy when completely covered billa like figures cruise by. I’d like to see the face of the person who lives next door and the one who stand next to me at the bus stop and the one in the supermarket pay up counter. I want to recognise them and remember in case of blast or something. I feel uneasy otherwise. Its nothing to do with religion. About the yellow robe, Ayman, monks have been wearing it in this country for almost two thousand three hundred years now.
Sufis were the traditional Muslims that lived here in Sri Lanka for long time. They have developed Islam to suit where they live. I cannot remember they had billa outfit. Wahhabis despise Sufis because they think Sufis do not adhere many verses in the Koran. Ahamadie sect is banned in Pakistan. Muslims are becoming radicalised daily. Just read what Wahhabis did to Sufis here in Sri Lanka.
A Sufi named Abdullah opened a Meditation Centre at Kattankudy in 1996. Wahhabis made an arson attack on the building on May 29 the same year. Abdullah died on Dec 6th 2006. On 15th the same month a Wahhabi mob invaded the Meditation Centre, knocked down the minaret and removed the body of Abdullah’s body from mosque site and burned it. Wahhabis burned 117 houses belong to Sufis. Many Sufis fled the district, two were injured, and one lost an arm. And this is only one of many attacks on Sufis. If not for swift police action fights among Muslims in Sri Lanka would have been in par with Pakistan, Iraq and etc.
How do you compare a bit of Muslim act unleashed on a group of the same sect to action by all Buddhist organisations put together, eh? It won’t be long Wahhabis take on Sinhala Buddhists and Hindu Tamils here.

A group of Buddhist extremists led by a few monks launched an attack on the monk as he was arriving for a sermon. Several bodyguards of the preacher who came to the sermon also received blows, local media reported.
The victim of the attack Sri Samnthabadra, formerly known as Ven. Pitiduwe Siridhamma Thero of Siri Sandaham Ashram at Bellantota in Boralesgamuwa has raised controversy as a preacher of new ideology which the orthodox Buddhists claim is against Lord Buddha’s teachings.
He claims he has attended the second stage of enlightenment “sakurdagami” stage.
He last year challenged several prominent monks for a dhamma discourse and police protection had to be provided to him when a group of monks and layman entered his premises and challenged him back.

Disputes arisen with bana and its preachers is nothing new. But are you suggesting opposition (by some people) to preaching by Ven. Pitiduwe is comparable to the arson attack on Abdullah’s Meditation Centre and thereafter exhuming a dead body and burning it and thereafter burning 117 houses belong to Sufis at Kattankudy the same? Don’t be daft. Such atrocities cannot be left out as internal matters of Muslims. We only have to remember that it is that violence that spread to Beruwela, Ukuwela and elsewhere. No doubt, this country is in a grave danger.
My aim here is to let Sinhala Buddhists know that traditional (Sufi) Muslims in Sri Lanka whom they knew as peaceful people are being fast radicalised to be like (Wahhabi) extremists in Saudi. If my comments present an erroneous picture of your religion you may argue against my presents or asked the moderator to stop publishing it, but writing irrelevant matters and heresay stories will not get you anywhere for I shall not stop my writing nor will it stop readers reading my comments. You see whether arson took place or not is not the question since in the Galle incident, the Buddhist feud was at its nascent stage. Given time no one could predict how things will eventually be. The core issue here is that they were all polemical doctrinal differences. Die hard adherents to the different schools of thought sometimes take to violence. Religion cannot be blamed for this as you are trying to make out! Buddhist monks have raped and murdered; you will not blame the Buddhist dharma will you?

It goes against the maxim enunciated by the Master to “Cleanse your heart of malice and cherish no hatred, not even against your enemies; but embrace all living beings with kindness.”. A maxim worth pondering and reflecting in your twilight years.

Would you like if the sri lankan muslims join hand with others in wearing transparent cloth and exposing the body parts for inviting and tempting the male sexuality? Would you want the sri lankan muslims get drunk with others and commit social disturbance as it happen commonly in other community? The undertone and the direction at which these speeches are guided seems to draw a parallel in what transpired in Burma currently. Although the conference was captioned as response to individuals, at the summing up stage, the continuous attack on Muslims, with disguised allegation on conspiracy of ethnic cleansing, proves a sinister intention to provoke hate reactions against the Muslim community in Sri Lanka. Especially the speech by the chief of organisation squarely putting serious allegations on the Muslims will set the pace for provocation first which will give more confident to pour further unfounded allegations even if by drawing very distant past incidences into the present which in turn will drive provocation a step further into violent actions.
This vicious cycle is very evident in some of the gruesome conflicts across the globe in the past as well as present day. Its setting upon humans against humans, there will not be any winners and all the lost are for the humans alone.
Unless we stop thinking in terms of a religious, national, ethnic or any grouping and start thinking in terms as a single human societal family, there will be no shortage for excuses and reasons to kill one another.

Wahabyism myth is a canard spread by BBS based on misguided information. Those who wear black Abaya don’t know anything about Wahabism, but if you ask them, they will say they are Muslims, and simply following God’s revelation. A lot of Muslims (my self included) cannot figure out the differences that would identify a Wahabi. We have many Muslim religious sects or groups, such as Thowheed, Hubbul, Thabligh, but not seen or met a Wahabi originating from Saudi.

He told lies about Vendol’s complaint about Halal certificate charges, Muslim shops lock in the Sinhalese workers on Friday’s without A/C etc etc. All these were proved lies and he is still able to face the people. This episode in the political history of this country has showed the importance of the likes of loose cannons, bulls in china shops types such Wimial W., Azath S. and Dr Mervyn S. The later who possess the ability to use more than his mouth if the need be. With an imbecilic government and scoundrels like Galaboda Aththe G. roaming free, there is hardly a more effective weapon.
I solute Wimal W. and most of all Dr Mervyn S. who’s boys hammered, de-robbed Galaboda Aththe and chased him off (along with his other cronies) like a pack of stray dogs when the uncivl monk tried to invade the latters podium at a public function.
This of course is an incident the government censorship moved in fast to cover up and then packed off the orange buffalo brigade to the US for things to cool down. It seems the buffalos are back to stir up more commotion.
