The Court of Appeal has ruled that Galle district MP Geetha Kumarasinghe was disqualified to be a Member of Parliament due to her dual citizenship status.
She holds citizenship status in Switzerland as well as Sri Lanka.
According to the newly introduced 19th amendment to the Constitution, a Sri Lankan Citizen holding citizenship status in another country cannot hold a seat in the legislature.

Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said the government has to pay US $ 9.3 billion for loans obtained by the previous government. However, the present government obtained only US $ 1,150 million.
Addressing the UNP May Day rally held on May 1 in Colombo, he said the former President lied about the loans obtained by the government. All investigations into murders, corruption and malpractices of the previous regime should be completed before the next year’s May Day celebration. Names and details of the persons who stand in the current regime and protect the Rajapaksas will be revealed.
The Minister said others were shown on state television channels after showing the entire Rajapaksa family during the previous regime. Now the media has been given freedom.
But the media try to bring back the previous regime. It was innocent poor people who brought in good governance, so their hopes should be fulfilled.
A national government can be formed even after 2020. The Constitution will be changed and the Government will face a referendum without any fear. Strikes should not be launched and problems should be resolved through discussions, he said.

Once I happened to watch a video in which the MP was visiting her area being joined to a big gathering. Those people gathered there raised an issue on not having proper water or something other grievances they have. There, the female politician, louded the gathered people ” I will also drin the same water as you do”. Then one villager questioned, ” Do you really drink the same water, dont you lie Mrs Kumarasinghe, why you lie that way, we are no fools Mrs… etc ” Then the angry lady attacked, them saying ” if I would drink bottle water, that is not your problem, just because there I spend my own money ” bla bla… that is how she answers the questions.
She sounds as if she has not even complete school education.
The kind of actors and actresse were supported by previous idiotic regime, not considering any kind of qualifications.
In political discussions, the woman behaved herself as if she has not had any kind of knoweldge on the raised questions. That was her background. So is Malinin Fonseka too. No matter, nothing was in their heads, Mahinda Jarapakshe for his popularity, SLFP politics were betrayed.
Today, he prevaricates when questioning as to why he did so.
According to MR, anyone can join his party no matter, even high profile murders were carried out by anyone.

To my little knowledge the law is clear on who can be an MP. It does not mention dual citizen. So it is left to the learned Supreme Court judges interpretation. As for the Central Bank there no rule which says a citizen has to be the governor, as the first governor in post independent Ceylon was an American.

It seems that most of the commentators in these forums either cannot understand Sinhalese or willfully ignore one side of the argument so as to sling mud. Another little episode ignored by CT and its commentators is the deaths of two elderly individuals got down to Galle Face for the MR rally due to heat exhaustion. They were it is claimed needless deaths caused by the negligence of the organizers of this rally in failing to rush them to hospital or to provide them with assistance beforehand. The crowds were never more at Galle Face and less at the other

This is a foolish policy. If the foreign power wants to do something through local politician they can easily buy a local politician by giving lots of money through a NGO. There is no need to find one of their citizens who has a seat in the legislature. I believe that bribing a dual citizenship is harder than local politicians. Therefore, I conclude that this policy will isolate the hardworking, honest and smart Sri Lankans; but a good policy for uneducated and dishonest politicians.

I was born in England and was automatically a British citiZen. In 1974 however I came to Sri Lanka with the intention of settling down and making my life here. However, I needed to work and a job came my way in the regional office of an international organisation. It was for local staff only, for a Sri Lankan citizen. At that time SL did not permit dual nationality but I needed that job. So I applied for SL citizenship and surrendered my British citizenship.
To this date I am only a Sri Lankan citizenship.

No, I have never regretted it. But every time I get a new passport I have to pay quite a lot to get a Right of Abode certificate put in it. This means I don’t need a visa to enter Britain. But I rarely go anyway. Hate flying. Miss some things about Britain, like the long summer days, the museums and art galleries, the theatre; the National Health when it was in its heyday unlike now.
