Geneva, You, Me And Sri Lanka Incorporated

By Sarath de Alwis

Sarath de Alwis

In his fascinating book ‘Sapiens: A Brief History of Human Kind Israeli Historian Yuval Noah Harari remarks “You could never convince a monkey to give you a banana by promising him limitless bananas after death in monkey heaven.”

Obviously the celebrated historian is not well informed of the island republic of Sri Lanka.

Mahinda Rajapaksa is probably the least highbrow or cerebral leader to have led independent Sri Lanka. He was also the beneficiary of a cruel twist of fate. Under his watch, the armed forces of the nation, militarily defeated and physically eliminated a ferociously fascist monster- Velupillai Prabhakaran. So, very probably, he would not have known that he himself was a fascist. Eliminating a fascist is no license to be a fascist. Let us be practical.

What constitutes a Fascist state? A Fascist state has some distinctly obvious features. A Fascist regime constantly and consistently relies on nationalism and patriotism interchangeably with slogans and symbols. Dayan March 17 Hyde park

It has a pronounced disdain for human rights. It is constantly engaged in persuading the citizenry that human rights can be ignored in order to ensure national security. It considers torture, abduction and disappearances as legitimate tools of governance.

It usually perfects the art of creating patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat that usually comes from ethnic or religious minorities and liberal intellectuals.

It accords an ill-disguised supremacy to the military. The Miltarry is given a disproportionate amount of state funding. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

The mass media are intimidated by the state in to a state of Pavlovian submission. It is obsessed with national security and fear is the oft used tool to tame the masses. The ‘Apey Hamuduruwane’ appeal to a corrupt clergy helps it to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric is a convenient instrument even to justify actions that are clearly in contradiction to religious teachings.

The state creates its own aristocracy in commerce, industry and finance. Organized labour is suppressed. The people are conditioned to ignore police abuses and to forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism.

There is rampant Cronyism and Corruption. The Fascist regime has groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions. They use state power and authority to protect their friends from accountability.

National resources are plundered unabashedly. Public finances are stolen by government leaders. The Fascist regime claims legitimacy by holding periodic sham elections. It uses the Judiciary to manipulate and control the process of governance.

Now don’t we develop a sneaky feeling of déjà vu?

Since we all do, let us all agree that our democracy after 19th May 2009 was stripped of its moral imperatives, reducing it to a sham democracy, marked by hollowness and hypocrisy. The Rajapaksa regime was blatantly fascist in scope, content and composition.

Its hypocrisy was universally apparent. Yet, at home it was shrouded by rhetoric that used patriotism and nationalism interchangeably. Its hollowness was hidden under impressive physical infrastructural development that relied on reckless borrowing from abroad.

The subject of this missive is the recent inaugural event held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute on 29th September by an organization that calls itself Sri Lanka Inc., and the theme was ‘Geneva and you’. The blurb describes Sri Lanka Inc., as a ‘non-partisan civic network of young professionals.’ The masterful digital introduction on a giant screen vouched for their professional competencies. Its content was certainly focused on capturing the imagination of the young. That they succeeded in the attempt with participants is demonstrated by the following extract from an admirer in its Facebook page.

The reference to Professor Sarath Wijesuriya who is now striving hard to fill the vacuum created by the demise of Venerable Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thero should alert us to the clear and present danger of the Rajapakse restoration project.

In February 2015, this writer wrote in the columns of the Colombo Telegaraph about the first comeback event of MR which ideologue Dayan Jayatilleka described as ‘The Rising’. I said then “Forty days after the dismantling of the family politburo, Mahinda Rajapaksa has demonstrated that his orgburo is well-oiled and running. With absolute fascination this writer watched a microcosm of Sinhala society hailing the event as a turning point.

This writer also warned that the oligarchy that was spawned by the Rajapaksa regime was entrenched and its stranglehold was and is systemic.

‘Geneva and you’ colloquy demonstrated beyond doubt that the plutocrats who have amassed wealth and power under the Rajapaksa siblings have clearly embarked on a serious oligarchic mission. They have decided, quite correctly, that the new democratic norms of governance can be stretched to its maximum permissible limits.

The parley on ‘Geneva and you’ featured several who served as diplomats under the ‘ancien régime.’ I could not concentrate on the introductory remarks of Chamithri Rambukwella– a Rajapaksa appointee to the overseas service. Her presence in the confab directed my tasteless mind to her dear Dad’s broken leg, mended at tax payer’s expense. Sorry.

Natasha Gooneratne Maurice while introducing the subject reached up to lofty heights of academic neutrality which may have mesmerized the admirer I have quoted earlier.

“Any form of discussion on this resolution becomes so highly politicized, that it is now presumed that you are either anti-government or pro-former government, or that you are pro or anti US or pro or anti UN, if you have any sort of opinion on it. But the background and content of this resolution is not so simply polarized, it’s far more complex. And if we are not careful, we can get so caught up in the politicisation that we can miss the legitimate issues that surround it.”

As the evening unfolded the politicization was made abundantly clear. The last speaker the enormously talented Dayan Jayatilleka demonstrated his capacity to play erudite Robespierre.

It was amusing to listen to a cassocked catholic priest – Father Wimal Thirimanne reminding of our civilizational superiority that goes back to two thousand five hundred years in the year 2016 of the Gregorian calendar.

It was with sheer awe that I watched and listened to Dr.Dayan Jayailleka. In spell binding oratory he laid out the challenge presented by the Rajapaksa restoration project to derail the process of national reconciliation and constitutional reforms. Here one must digress. It was Musolini the nationalist who defined the Fascist philosophy.

Fascism is not only a law-giver and a founder of institutions, but an educator and a promoter of spiritual life.(Venerable Monks of Abhayarama take note.) “It aims at refashioning not only the forms of life but their content – man, his character, and his faith. To achieve this propose it enforces discipline and uses authority, entering into the soul and ruling with undisputed sway.”

Listening to Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka this writer was reminded of these words of Benito Musolini. It was eerie to watch the metamorphosis of a man who three years ago wrote in the post script of his book ‘Long War, Cold Peace’ ‘The crisis of the state is partly a crisis of reconciliation. It is my view that there are only three possible pathways to reconciliation: equal citizenship, eliminating all forms of discrimination against or for any segment of the populace on the basis of ethno –lingual or religious markers (I call it ‘Soulbury Plus’); a reasonable sufficiency of devolution of power to the provinces; or a hybrid of elements of both approaches, with improvements on one realm offsetting inadequacies in the other. For the moment though, I count far less on the state for the purpose of reconciliation, and far more on interactions and initiatives in the social and artistic domain, especially by the educated young people.”

In 2013 Dr.Dayan J had a definitely different reading of the then regime. “It was alarming” he lamented ‘that there was a tendency to denounce as separatist conspiracies, any attempt by lawyers, academics, students and youth activists, to build bridges between North and South or even to mobilize on a multiethnic or non-ethnic basis. “

See how the Rajapaksa magic works. There was the former Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapapaksa who combined the roles of Goebbels and Goring under the MR Presidency in the front row.

On the side screen he was nodding sagely in agreement with Dr. Dayan J who made a deliberate attempt to politicize the armed forces that have remained subject to civilian authority.(if one glosses over the years when army intelligence and removal of political irritants overlapped)

Says Dr. DJ “There is an attempt to change the deep structure of the Sri Lankan state. That is the attempt to federalize, as well as the attempt to effect what is known as “security sector reforms”. One of the targets is the Sri Lankan Army. And it is not by mistake I say it is the Sri Lankan Army. Because there is a sense in the West that the other arms of the Sri Lankan military can be co-opted and may be useful. But the Army is seen as the most patriotic of the services.

One could not miss the grin on the face of Daya Rathnayake also in the front row. He as commander of the army outsourced inculcating patriotism among ranks of the army to Venerable Uduwe Dhammaloka thero during the last presidential elections.

All in all it was not about ‘Geneva and You.’ It was about ‘we the people’ and they who plan the return of the ousted leader.

There is no doubt that Mahinda Rajapaksa is in control of the public conversation. It is, however, Gotabaya Rajapaksa who has the financial and organizational resources to make a serious effort to translate intentions to reality. More than MR, GR has the political cunning to create a new reality for the family purpose.

Dr. DJ purposefully contrived to refer to the gallantry of Colonel Rajapaksa in his extempore delivery. That is understandable. His rhetoric had the effect of reducing Cicero to zero.

In mock anguish he wailed “We, having defeated after 30 years, a fascist enemy – not just a separatist or terrorist enemy– we have to try ourselves, our armed forces which liberated us, defeated fascism and reunified the country! We have to fall on our sword! And there are those in Government who have agreed to this!”

We have arrived at a point when spades need to be called spades. Dr. Dayan J’s perorations on patriotism of the Rajapaksa tribe unfailingly drives me to take refuge in Orwellian wisdom. George Orwell who added the terms, ‘big brother’,’ thought police’ and ‘double think’ to our political lexicon has also given us a clear reading of the phenomenon that is now advanced by the thought manipulators of Sri Lanka Inc.

“Nationalism is not to be confused with patriotism. Both words are normally used in so vague a way that any definition is liable to be challenged, but one must draw a distinction between them, since two different and even opposing ideas are involved. By “patriotism” I mean devotion to a particular place and a particular way of life, which one believes to be the best in the world but has no wish to force on other people. Patriotism is of its nature defensive, both militarily and culturally. Nationalism, on the other hand, is inseparable from the desire for power.”

True. The armed forces under the command of President Mahinda Rajapaksa eliminated the vicious terrorism of the LTTE and eliminated Prabhakaran who to use a phrase of Mathew J Morgan in his ‘Origins of New Terrorism’ did not want a seat at the table but wanted to destroy the table and all who sat around it. We should therefore be grateful.

But then, should our acquiescence with expressions of gratitude reach the level of feudal servility to a victorious monarch? Should we greet the deep state that eliminated Lasantha Wickrematunge with Sinhala passion and Buddhist avidity to keep retired Lieutenant Colonel Gotabaya Rajapaksa amused and in good humour?

More than what you wrote here Sarath, writing that are always thought provoking and in this instant filling one with revulsion at the deviousness of people such as DJ, the picture accompanying this article says much more.

Look what a pathetic picture DJ cuts here, an epitome of the ‘wakutuveyang society’ that I always talk about. Even MR found DJ’s grovelling so detestable that he (MR) went out of his way to sideline him. Another pathetic figure in the picture is Vasudeva, trying to half cover his shameful face. How low had he descended to, leaving all those true believers in social justice that he for long propped up in absolute shock.

I am doubt what DJ was unable to do to save MR s bum, nevertheless him to have been recalled from his tasks immeidately after war was over is not yet clear to me. DJ – you the kind of people are plenty in our poor country – so long their vote power remains that way, Rajakashes or any other power greedy men would ruin the nation. I myself thought people should have learnt it after Premadasa era, but MR et al did and ende up as no other did since Independence.
We the peace lovers, but peace lovers finally want this nation to be guided by ones with heads. Not ones that manipulate gullible masses for their political indulgencies.

DJ was playing a role abusing Premadasa Junior shortly before the election.
But today Premadasa Junior has sensed the way it should be the unity within UNP- that could finally make him reaching his future goals.

MY MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION OF THE DAY IS: WHAT WOULD DJ FEEL TODAY HAVING BEEN NEGLECTED BY PREMADASA JUNIOR ?

This man DJ is known to us being a brocker of all low nature.

If something would have been burning, he has always added more fuel to it rather than made every efforts to bring solutions. Likewise, today, he has been rabbelrousing – calling that CBK has been not givena madate to add her thoughts while he has been promoting further the man he loves – none other than MR – even if anyone with a brain would disgree with MR and his racial and facist acts.

        • 10
          3

It is true DJ is a cunning, cruel and anti-Srilankan. His ultimate aim is not to allow peace in this country. He is patriotic to Christianity he doesn’t like Buddhism or Hinduism. He understood Mahinda well. Mahinda is very greedy of power and he has very low IQ. He can be easily manipulated by anyone. So, this fascist Dayan is using Mahinda now to reach his goals of destroying the nation into pieces.

DJ is just an another Wimal Buruwanse only.

Claiming to have more experieince in lankan external and overal politics, but doing the other way around or supporting to the facists and racial groups should be held as a greater crime. This has been the top of the agenda of Dayan Silva aka Jayathilaka

DJ can simply do it for his own note : to go for an opinion poll to ascertain what people would feel after reading his 2 cts worth, in terms of today critical politics being played in the country. Consensula politics in a country would not be easy since every 2 nd of the nation is easily manipulative, naive, gullible and gawky so that any extremists could tame and grab their votes easily.

It is still a wonder to me, knowing the realities, Mr Sirisena to have managed it sofar together with Mr: RW though moves are detectable as SNail WALKS.

      Pictures worth thousands of words.

See how the red shirt wearting camelian behaves before the athigaru:

For them and other low lives – MR has been the leader and will be there leader for one thing, his all or not decisions appeased them but harming another portion of srilakens civil folks.
DJ or other racists of his nature would see nothing wrong to go against Muslims or tamils or burghers- as if only us the sinhalese have the emotions and feelings –

So long anyone born to a country can be proved, shold be blessed with all the equal treatements. We are all the same. That is where we learn to start modern day non-violence promoting buddhism.

      Mr. Alwis,

let me leave the few lines to you here.

I am 75 years old by now, having read much of the articles authored by Dayan Jayathilaka, I have the feeling he has never been consistent with what he has been uttering. As any simple simion would do, he has always been acting for his posts/status/bread.
Current rulers would not let him twist as had been with others – seem to have become the reason him not to join hand with them.
He nature has been, always adding more fuel to the buring fire than doing the other way to bring parties together. His complex is abouve his person. That has ruined his life to this date – making him a LAUGHING STOCK in lanken politics of the day.

An amateur attempt to portray Sri Lanka in a fascist vein. Fascism, at its core, is a play on totalitarianism. You would not have any sort of free enterprise, free press, or even much in the way of freedom of religion unless your affiliation advocated the Party line. The State, at its discretion, could impose controls on the latter three without any regard to existing laws.

Mahinda simply went after some enemies of the State. His objective was not to transform the country into a Sinhala-Buddhist apartheid entity. That would have involved mass killings of Tamils and discrimination against Muslims & Christians. Most of the Tamils killed were either LTTE sympathizers or collateral damage in the campaign to annihilate the LTTE. If the LTTE had surrendered voluntarily, Tamil civilians would not have perished in the way the UN is crying about.

Mahinda’s primary difficulty was not destroying the LTTE. It was capturing Prabhakaran. Brainwashed idiots from the Tamil diaspora funded this fool for 30 years; the only way to put an end to the LTTE and the rubbish Eelam fantasy was to get rid of the fat pig once and for all. Just like the USA killed 31K Afghans to get to Bin Laden, the Sri Lanka Army killed 10K Tamils to get to VP. It is unfortunate, of course, but there was no other way. The fat pig used them as a SHIELD, so most of the blame goes to him, not the SLA.

Well well, not everybody is well informed, that the Sinhala, Tamils, Muslims etc are Para-deshis, Paras, in the Land of Native Veddah Aethho.

We are talking about Para-Sinhala, Para-Tamils, Para-Muslims etc. Geneva or not. Can the Paras be sent back to their homeland, India, Baharat?

This artciel shows very well the results of Colonial mentality of Sinhale people and the failure of post-colonial education.

It is Tamils used fascism to kill sinhala people as well muslims and their own. Sinhale army got the help of both the Tamils and muslims and got rid of Fascist – LTTE.

Now, This guy has become another western NFO. Getting rid of LTTE is wrong. the state becomes a Fascist State.

How come did Sinhale govt work like Nazis ?

Why you are worried about the Expenses on the army. what did you do in those days when every where in colombo bombs were exploding. Kept silence and now have become a hero ?

the way, you are complaining it looks you are getting money from NGOs.

Anyway, it is a crap article. don’t feel like reading.

If you are going to reason the way this guy reasons how a Fascist stat works. then there are no countries in the world which are not fascist.

It is all garbage in and garbage out.

It is you descendants of Colonial powers are against Sinhala people. this was claer even during the war.

Mr. de Alwis is as literate, readable and iconoclastic as he has been in print since the 1970s. I read him unfailingly, except when he writes about things I neither understand nor know, such as airlines and corporate business. In response to his critique, which is intellectually and politically serious, I have three no less serious points to make:

    1. If the Rajapaksa regime had been fascist or anything close to it, the opposition and all dissenters would either have been in concentration camps or facing the firing squad. After all, Georgi Dmitrov, who knew these things, defined fascism as the “open terroristic dictatorship”. Going by Mr. de Alwis’s insinuation, the Rajapaksas’ must have been the only “open terroristic dictatorship” to have been defeated, not by armed revolt, foreign invasion or popular uprising, but by the ballot at a competitive multi party election of the sort they had never failed to hold throughout their tenure, including to the Northern provincial council. Some fascists! Some fascism!

    2. Mr. de Alwis may discern, if he were to look without blinkers, a much closer fit between the characteristics of a fascist regime and the totalitarian statelet that Mr. Prabhakaran ran in the North and East, replete with Nuremburgian torchlight parades (on Mahaveera Day) and a ludicrous personality cult which included rolling bare bodied on the hot tarred roads in Trincomalee during Pongu Thamil events, behind a chariot bearing the portrait of a portly Prabahakaran!

3.I have not retracted, retreated from or changed by a comma, anything I said in the extract from my postwar volume “Long War, Long Peace” (first edition 2013, second 2014) that Mr. de Alwis so astutely quoted. I remain as much votary of ” a reasonable sufficiency of devolution of power to the provinces” as I am an opponent of federalism. Indeed I have always been an opponent of federalism, and the literate (with his German university education) Mr. de Alwis should know where that came from: Marx’s bitter opposition to federalism when faced with Bakunin’s advocacy of it; an opposition that was so bitter that it contributed to the split in and dissolution of the First International.

Facts being revealed that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is alleged to have gifted exclusive hampers to a large number of leading judges- say 74 all together in the country during the Sinhala & Tamil New Year season and the Christmas season while holding office as the head of state.

CAN YOU PLEASE ELABORATE WHAT KIND OF GIFTS YOU WERE BLESSED WITH AS VERY CLOSE ONES OF THE MAN ?

THEASE ARE REAL ISSUES THAT THE GENERAL PUBLIC OF THIS COUNTRY ARE NOT FED WITH. PLEASE EXPLAIN YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS.

      Dayan Jayatilleka types:

“ludicrous personality cult which included rolling bare bodied on the hot tarred roads in Trincomalee during Pongu Thamil events, behind a chariot bearing the portrait of a portly Prabahakaran!”

      Dayan Jayatilleka also typed:

“Throughout the meeting was the rising chant from the crowd, “Mahinda! Mahinda! Apata Oney Mahinda! (“We want Mahinda!”)”. So Wimal was probably right when he said to rapturous applause “Mahinda is not a name, Mahinda is a country!” The great Vietnamese leader Le Duan who succeeded the legendary Ho Chi Minh and led the anti-imperialist war to victory often said ‘Socialism and the Nation are One’. For the people who swarmed over Nugegoda in February 18th, Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Nation are One.”

      He also typed:

“Come on up for the rising
Come on up, lay your hands in mine
Come on up for the rising
Come on up for the rising tonight” – Bruce Springsteen: The Rising

“’Cause we made a promise we swore we’d always remember
      No retreat, baby, no surrender

Apropos of your defence of the Rajapaksas and their allegedly non-violent politics, would you care to comment on why President Sirisena and his family had to go into hiding in Dodangaslanda on the eve of the last Presidential election because of what awaited them in the event that Mahinda Rajapaksa won?
Sarath de Alwis has made no effort whatsoever to defend Prabha and his horde, as have those of us who oppose the Fascists and their running dogs of whatever stripe.

      DJ:
You are engaging in your usual prevarications: 1.There is nothing in de Alwis’s article to indicate that he would not consider that the LTTE regime was unquestionably fascist.
2.The argument that the Rajapakse regime was fascistic does not depend on a one to one comparison with other fascist states in history. There are indeed degrees of fascism. Nevertheless, it must be pointed out that Hitler was elected to his office and created a fascistic state by cultivating a consensus among the citizenry by scapegoating the Jews et al with the aid of scholars and intellectuals. This is exactly the role that the Jayatillekes and Seneviratnes and Amaresekeras, et al are playing with passion and vigour in the development of an ethno-religious fascistic state in Sri Lanka.
And I am afraid they will succeed. For them, and for many among the citizenry, there is a special satisfaction in subduing a hapless minority

Mahinda Rajapaksa gave money to LTTE – Tiran – P1

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DQ64bDD3Yk

        Uploaded on Jan 24, 2010
National organizer of the SLFP Mahajana Wing Tiran Alles has claimed that Basil Rajapaksa had personally handed over, at his office, Rs. 180 million to the then LTTE financial controller Emil Kanthan to ensure that the people of the north boycotted the 2005 presidential election.

That deal had taken place at the request of the then presidential candidate Mahinda Rajapaksa, Mr. Alles has alleged.

Speaking to the media today (Jan. 24) at his Koswatte home that had come under a grenade attack couple of days ago, Mr. Alles said he first came to know Emil Kanthan, then an employee of the Ministry of Rehabilitation, in 2002 when MP Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena introduced him.

Following a request by the then prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to introduce him to a person capable of doing a deal with the LTTE, Mr. Allas said he had introduced Emil Kanthan to Basil Rajapaksa.

After Emil Kanthan was told that Basil Rajapaksa wanted to meet him on behalf of Mahinda Rajapkasa, a meeting was held, Mr. Alles said, at his office,

After several such discussions between the two, one day Basil Rajapaksa wanted to know from Emil Kanthan what sort of support the LTTE wanted from the premier to strengthen their link.

After consulting the LTTE leadership, Emil Kanthan had come back and said the outfit wanted Rs. 180 million to buy boats.

Mr. Basil Rajapaksa said they only wanted the LTTE to get the people of the north boycott the presidential polls.

The money sought by Emil Kanthan was handed over a few days later in dollar – given by a neighbouring country for the presidential campaign – and rupee notes, alleged the SLFP (M) national organizer.

He said he had revealed all these in his statement to the TID in 2007 subsequent to his arrest by them, and as a result the attorney general had withdrawn all charges against him.

Speaking further, Mr. Alles said he had informed president Rajapaksa on February 14, 2007 about all these through a sworn affidavit signed by Ven. Uduwe Dhammaloka Thera who supports the president.

Mr. Alles said he was now compelled to expose Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa’s deal with the LTTE as the president and Mr. Basil Rajapaksa were attempting to kill him ? the first such attempt being the grenade attack on his home.

Mr. Alles was flanked by SLFP (M) leader Mangala Samaraweera at the media briefing.

I have deep respect for Sarath De Alwis for two things. His mastery of the English language and talent in his presentation of what his rational mind desires to express in the most lucid and economical manner and more importantly the honesty of purpose, free from calculated bias guided by some agenda. His write-ups are essays worthy of collection.

This time around however he seems to have been carried away by his own literary torpedo.

It is easy to counter clear untruth but very difficult to tackle gross exaggeration based on some truth.

Sarath, quite unconsciously , has got on to the same band wagon of describing Rajapaksha regime as worse than Bheeshanaya period of Premadasa of which Ranil Wickramasinghe was a powerful minister. One wonders are we reading about Rajapaksha or Premadasa who is credited to have built houses for the poor. If you ask me the criminality of stealing 60,000 million rupees or killing 60,000 youth by the vigilantes in the most barbarian manner, my choice is opposite of what Sarath would choose. If at gunpoint I were asked to choose between with no other option I would choose the former and Sarath the latter. Well, differences of opinion.

If prior to 2005 elections a god were to materialize before me and would give me the choice between Mahinda Rajapaksha who would totally free this country from the plague of unending terrorism but would subsequently behave the way Sarath has described and Ranil Wickramasinghe who would implement his infamous pact with Prabakaran I would unreservedly choose Rajapaksha. “But then, should our acquiescence with expressions of gratitude reach the level of feudal servility to a victorious monarch?” asks Sarath. Well all depends on the level of gratitude you attach to the elimination of terrorism.

“Should we greet the deep state that eliminated Lasantha Wickrematunge with Sinhala passion and Buddhist avidity to keep retired Lieutenant Colonel Gotabaya Rajapaksa amused and in good humour?”

You, my dear Sarath stand accused of keeping valuable information in secret which certainly would be useful to the law enforcing authorities. I remember at some point of time Sarath Fonseka’s name was bandied around. I trust you have evidence to prove otherwise.

In this thirty year brutal war Lasantha is no more important than one of tens of thousand innocent people who lost their life. Lasantha at least was a political animal who does not fall into the ‘innocent/third party’ category. He was fighting against the war and there were multitude of nefarious forces operating within the gamut of war. Since his conversion out of Buddhism (which the public came to be aware at his funeral) he displayed an unconscionable antipathy towards the mainstream society who were tired and at their wits end. His assailants were not sophisticated enough to appreciate that it was his democratic right. In a war ‘patriot’ and ‘traitor’ have no grey areas. Don’t blame me. (Incidently Lasantha W is portryed as a Hero. I appreciate a man who renounces his religion, but a man who switches from one to another is just an intellectual pygmy trying settle an score against his parents and society)

Personal tastes differ. I am very much more emotionally attached to the death of MP Raviraj who used to say in his broken but cheerful Sinhala “ Don’t tell me this man was killed by the LTTE and that man by the army. Both are killed by the WAR- let us bring an end to this cruel war” which strikes a chord in my heart to this day.

    Dr.Dayan Jayatilleka ,
Rajapakse Regime was Fascist on the basis of the attributes it possessed/displayed. If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck. Flippancy aside let us agree that there is no generic definition of fascism.
There is clerical fascism in the organised Buddhist church. Uduwe Dhammaloka threatened to march on Malwatte if the prelate went ahead with some meeting he summoned to protest the jailing of SF. That was at the behest of the Fuehrer/Il Duce . May be MR was a different breed of Fascist who gave expensive hampers to the higher judiciary. Walter Lacquer has written that a definition of Fascism is still illusive. Marx on Federalism is another story. It has to be taken in context. The USSR was federal in character.

There are divese kind of facists.

See, MR even today has been making every effort to attack his rivals.

I am more to Mr Sarath De ALwis than to those of DJ – we usually find the arguments of DJ are far from realities. Just citing the name of few references to sound his articles, he would not be able to cover but the truth.

By today, it is becoming clearer – why the former as head of state needed to gift anyone he thought was should be offered – but abusing collosal amounts of poor tax payers funds.
Even today, MR is far from seeing them – the gravity of mistakes.
And He is absolutely a facist and crook of high grade. Basta.

      Good piece Mr De Alwis.

I can’t believe that you take Dayan seriously!

Now I am beginning to doubt your analytical/writing skills that I’ve always admired.

All your skills come to zilch if you believe that Dayan and the rest of the Rajapakse circus is propelled by their love of the country.

What would any of those patriots do if they have to go out and get a real job?

When you strip away all the hoopla, the simple truth is, Dayan lusts for a position that his talent does not warrant. And he knows only Rajapakse will give him; not anyone else.

I don’t know Dayan’s father – before my time – and I don’t mean to insult the old gent, but the greatest gift a father can give his son is teach him a skill to go out and make a honest living.

Of all the SL politicians only Chandrika has thought her children skills to make a honest living and not to bulge on the public purse. Admire her for that; hate her for the rest.

      It all boils down to,

Some ancient dude, Plato, Aristotle, G.L. Peiris ……. or someone asked, if your mother is sick would you go around taking a vote to select a person to treat her?

We make docs undergo 6 years of rigorous training and put them through stringent examinations to hone their skills to treat us individually. But, to treat our ills collectively, as a country, we vote for people. And voodoo is what you end up with. And poor Dayan is trying to articulate it.

His can instead work for divisions and widening the gap from any parties bring together to achieve the final goal – peace.

He is fully against FEDERALISM as we read above – for his reasons he may ben doing so – but the good man had the chance to study it while being in Europe.

“Walter Lacquer has written that a definition of Fascism is still illusive.”

I am not sure whether one can compare Fascism/Nazism which occurred in relatively advanced industrial country and a country with low income, populated by people who are yet to go through a period of renaissance in order to shun their feudal mentality.

Further, the economic conditions that existed then created by the colonial powers, denied access to resources and markets for those two countries which threw up nasty nationalistic political forces throughout Europe and East Asia. That was not the case in this island.

The automation and rapid industrialisation too had alienated the people from their cultural base.

I would rather compare MR and his legacy to Pol Pot’s period of terror.

      sarath de alwis,

“”Walter Lacquer has written that a definition of Fascism is still illusive. “”

By definition of definition you would appreciate what is elusive and what is not.

Definitions are matters of convenience therefore it’s all the more important to analyse precisely what he means by the concept.

Violet eyes high cheek bones Russian Roulette.- Is what all are vying for.- the concept of beauty in the western world.

      CONCEPT: Fascist is blood-purity of Bloodsucker’s –
Adolf Hitler is likely to have had Jewish and African roots, DNA tests have shown.- Just like the Portuguese- Arab and African)

Like Aryan myth of the subcontinent (+ or – clock denoted the swastika) While all are Negroids and can’t win a medal at swimming or track.

Buddhism Or Wisdom’s concept is in 5 lovely words that expand and these are carved on rear of Buddhas 5 fingers in Abhayamudrā mode both hands -calm after storm- at Ajanta Ellora transition from Hinayana to Mahayana (during that period only the Brahmans and civil servants knew Sanskrit- not necessarily the sculptor too)

I do not believe in God; his existence has been disproved by Science.
But in the concentration camp, I learned to believe in men.

my point is precisely that the MR regime did not look, walk or quack like a duck. if it had, there would have been no opposition, no critical civil society, no elections including to the northern PC, no critical media, no trade unions, no JVP and no regime replacement through the ballot box.

What did walk, talk and quack like a fascist duck was Prabhakaran’s Tamil Eelam in the North and east: hence the murder of all Tamil dissidents.

Debate with a man who loves Milosevic, Putin and Ramzan Kadyrov?
      No, you should use your
psychoanalysis background to show why the son of your friend turned out to be so utterly depraved.

you are wasting your time with a working class bigot underneath the grin- an airway manager who is trying to buccaneer.

honesty is the best policy but the man who follows it invariably is not an honest man. We saw commie ken and his army coming in bus but “one-man melting pot” on a bicycle has left a mark that no lefty can dream of.

The picture says it all – worth (more than) a thousand words!

The fawning, servile Jayathilleka, as usual, ‘bending over’ for his master!!

Indeed the picture says everything! No one in recent has presented himself in public his sycophancy with such visual clarity than does DJ in this picture. One must commend the editors of CT for their very judicious choice.

Geneva, You, Me And Sri Lanka Incorporated???

Not in my name please.- He She You,

“”What constitutes a Fascist state? A Fascist state has some distinctly obvious features. “”

Cobblers’ awls! from a left wing trade unionist evading –
    Proof by analogue is Fraud.

Fascism was founded during World War I by Italian national syndicalists who drew upon left-wing and right-wing political views.
Some scholars consider fascism to be right-wing because of its social conservatism and authoritarian means of opposing egalitarianism.

Right wing Fascist: Franco the Frog (not the looks but purity of blood because they are mixed like his)

Left Wing Fascist : Stalin and Mao – they both annihilated their own people by the millions during WW2 with American money that was sent to feed and defend the nation.

Don’t you see the face of Lankan left fascist forces there from the time of Premadasa Diced Meat??

This statement of Maggie is undeniably true to the word .

Margaret Thatcher — ‘The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.’

PASSA AND THE POOR WON THE WAR BUT ALL THE LEFTIES මැර කල්ලි, Hingannage Thuwale TOOK TOOK AWAY THE CONSTITUTION.

I really admired Dr.DJ when he came out in support of some some young people who were harassed by the pliant police of the day for holding lighted candles in front of the BBS headquarters. The man even spoke to the BBC saying Gota was behind it.
Sometimes his honest opinions do come out.

IS the the Fascism this person talks about ?

For years the LTTE Tamil Diaspora hand in glove with separatist elements, the Church and other factors that use terror groups to advance their own agendas were busy relaying a load of lies to the world. People of course believed them. The stories were sensational, the scripts were well-written, there was plenty of backing through well-known organizations & individuals who were part of the plot and so Sinhalese became the monsters and people thought no Tamil could even walk on the streets without getting attacked or killed. There was no one to showcase the statistics. Tamils were in fact living with the Sinhalese working with them, schooling and had none of the problems that the world was shown they had. But it was a good story to sell that enabled a lot of people to get refugee status and live abroad and look after their families.

The best example is the Chief Minister of the Northern Provincial Council who has lived virtually all of his 70 plus years in Colombo, schooled and worked in Colombo and went to live in the North only after 2012 and ever since he s declaring that no Sinhalese can live in the North

You have lifted the two paragraph (sinhalanet.net, March 24, 2016) from Joseph Shenali D Waduge Goebbels, the Minister of Propaganda in Sinhala/Buddhist ghetto.

      Aren’t you ashamed of yourself?

I have read Sarath de Alwis’s previous articles with interest and some admiration of both his analyses and his mastery of the English language.
This time around, however, I am surprised and I sense some fundamental frustration that has gotten out of hand and caused him to lose his marbles???
His total inability to see perceptions other than his own with some objectivity, and which one now clearly sees to be of an extremely anti-nationalist genre, and the alacrity with which he has jumped into join the “ad hominem” bandwagon of a bunch of persons given to invective as per usual in these columns has downgraded him to the level of this latter bunch who cannot keep an argument within the limits of human decency.
Maybe it is old age showing up a man for what he really is….
