The Homagama Magistrate found General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) Galagoda Atte Gnanasara Thera was guilty of threatening Sandhya Ekneligoda inside the court premises.

Sandhya Ekneligoda is the wife of missing journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda.
Magistrate Udesh Ranatunga, who found the Thero guilty under Sections386 and 486 of the Penal Code also announced that the sentence would be delivered on June 14th.

Now the next is “Sentencing”. Before that happens, let us remind the President and make a request to STAY AWAY from interfering with that sentence once it is announced. I say this and make that request, because the President, according to the provisions of the Constitution has the “POWER” to set aside the punishment and allow the accused to go FREE. We saw this in action when the ex President Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse set aside such a conviction and the punishment imposed by the Kandy Magistrate courts on an ex Mayor of Kandy MC. On that day, instead of him being taken to prison, he came out of the courts and went home. Mr. President: Please do not quote MR and use that “Beastly Power” any more.

Lasith, I have always thought that there will be no solution to this problem until every bhikkhu is registered with some Authority who has the power to disrobe him. I realise that this solution is not ideal. Bhikkhus were originally mendicants who were considered capable of continuing on their own after five years of training under a senior monk. Today this is only found among the Galduwa and other forest monasteries. Other centrally organised religions like the Christian churches have many problems so I know that this solution is not ideal but I cannot think of any other. In any case, nothing will happen without the approval of the Mahanayakas and the political will of the Government. What do you think?
