Gnanasara ‘In Theory’ Effectively Disrobed Today

Bodu Bala Sena strongman Galagoda Atte Gnanasara can no longer be considered a Buddhist monk as per the vinaya rules elaborated recently by Rev Medagoda Abhayatissa considering the fact that all prisoners are treated equally by relevant authorities.

Rev Abhayatissa, speaking at the Sunethradevi Pirivena, Pepiliyana, said that according to the disciplinary texts, the Vinaya Pitakaya, a bikkhus who spends seven days out of the robe can lose his status as per the rule cheevara vippavaasi (residing out of the robe).

Superintendent of the Welikada Prison Chandana Ekanayake speaking to Colombo Telegraph today reiterated the opinion of Commissioner General of Prisons H.M.N.C. Dhanasinghe who stated that all prisoners are treated equally. Therefore, Gnanasara, who is serving a year of hard labor in prison, like all other prisoners, would be expected to be forced to wear prison garb or the ‘jumper suit’ in common parlance.

Since he began his term on June 14th, today would be his seventh cheevara vippavaasi day. His status as a bikkhu automatically expires today.

Galagoda Boru Gnanasara is an insult to the Buddha, the Damma, and Sanga,
He brings Lankan Buddhism into global ill repute.

Time for his nikaya to boot him out and save Buddha Sasana from this BBS Thug.

You don’t get it. Do you..
You ought to spend some time watching Dr Rajitha and reading his Lips..
BTW, Pls find out whether the Norway Delegation paid visits to Bogamabara& Anuradhapura ..

Now please do not go overboard with robe business. You know we are sri lankans and will always find a way to accommodate our way of doing things. When Asgiriya and Malwatte monks decided not to have Reginold Cooray as CP governor ,their reason was that Reginold was a low caste man from Colombo ( fish man Caste) and the President accepted. Same Asgiriya and Malwatte chaps will find a way to give Ganasara fellow a robe again (may be pink one this time.)

The awakened one rebelled against caste consciousness. In this island we have replaced Buddhism with Sinhala/Buddhism therefore caste does matter.
Let Assgiriya and Malawatte do whatever they want to do. The rest of the people should start seriously thinking about the future of this island where the country should go.

I agree with you but do you think Sri Lanka politicians have the balls to separate religion from politics?

Buddhism in Sri Lanka is like a ship without a captain. No one has control of anything. It has come to a point that there is no clear answer whether politics has corrupted Buddhism or Buddhism has corrupted politics.

A robe does not define a monk but his way of life. This goes to everyone but much is expected of those that have chosen priestly vocations.

        Native,
Don’t misinform the public. There is no Sinhala-Buddhism but there is a Sinhala-Buddha-Shasanaya. Only the Thripitakaya is Buddhism.
        /
People have already started thinking about the future of this island where the country should go. That’s why people are going to reinstate the Sinhala-Buddhist state.

“That’s why people are going to reinstate the Sinhala-Buddhist state”
Wow, what a nice idea to have a Sinhala Buddhist state. I would suggest few names to lead the future Sinhala Buddhist state. Hon. G. Nanasaara (Known as Rev. Galagoda Aththe Gnasaara prior to Prison verdict) as head of the Sinhala Buddhist State. Prof. Madagoda Abeyatissa as Dy. Head. Other members of the Sinhala Buddhist state are Narahenpita Nurse Saadu, Magalkande Sudantha, Ittakande Saddatissa, Napane Premasiri, Elle Gunawansa, Gangarame Podi (Loku) Saadu, Begamuwe Nalaka, Baddegama Samitha, Wendaruwe Upali (Hitler Saadu) Ulapone Sumangala, Akmeemana Dayaratna and All Safron Robes thug monks belongs to Rajapaksha Nikaya. Main caretaker (Dayaka) of the Sinhala Buddhist state Hon. Mahinda Rajapaksha. Gotabaya Rajapaksha as War Adviser. Security Council should consists Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekara, Major General Kamal Gunaratna (Handikadal) Dilith Jayaweera, Nalaka Godawewa, Bandula Wijeweera, Rohana Baddage and Maajor Ajith Presanna on behalf of retired Ranaviruwo.

I wonder when exactly did you become a theologian?
          Congratulations.

Will you now explain to us the laity what exactly you mean by Sinhala-Buddha-Shasanaya and Thripitakaya?

We know where the country been in the past 70 years, extrapolating from our post independence history we should know that we are going to hit the bottom sooner than we thought before.

The Sinhala/Buddhist fascists never let the people to think for themselves or for the country. They are kept busy with various unresolved and new conflicts.

Here is a joke for the day:

“Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) organization says that they will commence a ‘fast unto death’ if the imprisoned Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero does not receive bail within tomorrow (22).

National Organizer of the organization Witharandeniye Nanda Thero stated that the appeal for bail for Ganansara thero will be taken up tomorrow.

A group of Buddhist monks of BBS commenced a fast yesterday (20), near the Bo tree in Fort.

Witharandeniye Nanda Thero made these statements joining with the fast.”

        Burt

Can the courts take up the appeal in about six months time? Can you fix it?

When will president Sirisena visit the satyagrahies and beg them to end their satyagraha.

Though it is irrelevant to BBS I am just stating the Rules for satyagraha campaigns which was devised by the old half naked fakir:

        1. Harbour no anger.
        2. Suffer the anger of the opponent.
        3. Never retaliate to assaults or punishment; but do not submit, out of fear of punishment or assault, to an order given in anger.
        4. Voluntarily submit to arrest or confiscation of your own property.
        5. If you are a trustee of property, defend that property (non-violently) from confiscation with your life.
        6. Do not curse or swear.
        7. Do not insult the opponent.
        8. Neither salute nor insult the flag of your opponent or your opponent’s leaders.
        9. If anyone attempts to insult or assault your opponent, defend your opponent (non-violently) with your life.
        10. As a prisoner, behave courteously and obey prison regulations (except any that are contrary to self-respect).
        11. As a prisoner, do not ask for special favourable treatment.
        12. As a prisoner, do not fast in an attempt to gain conveniences whose deprivation does not involve any injury to your self-respect.
        13. Joyfully obey the orders of the leaders of the civil disobedience action.

    Medagoda Abhayatissa
Doesn’t your Vinaya Pitakaya say anything about how you should behave when you wear the robe? Or do you interpret it as a license to live as a parasite by exploiting the spiritual, cultural and political sentiments that are natural to a community. Instead of guiding the people to deal with their concerns according to the great teaching of Lord Buddha, you rascally monks …….. you spew racist venom, hate propaganda full of conspiracy theories in order to inflame violence. You spout fundamentalist, misogynist garbage that exhort the denial of human rights to women, children and minorities. You incite violence against those who adopt alternate life-styles in keeping with their different sexual and gender orientations. Your views are totally against what the Buddha taught. Your beliefs and behaviour are completely anachronistic in today’s world making you look like yellow-robed apes ……. throwbacks. As Sri Lankans, we should be ashamed that you thugs and morons present yourselves to the world as representatives of our great tradition of spirituality based on tolerance, humanity, loving-kindness and open mindedness. You all – the incarnations of the three poisons of greed (lobha), hate (dosa), and delusion (moha) – should be disrobed permanently and thrown into jail.

Great news, I am so glad to hear Commissioner Dhanasingha, saying that all prisoners are treated the same way, I hope also hope that the inmates will teach him a good lesson, for his vulgar behavior. Gnasara the thug has got a big nose. Hope that will be flat by the time he gets out of prison. I also hope that he will never be able to get near a temple. Never be a monk again.

Reverends are in christianity. Now, the case is different. Otherwise, most of those reverends were prosecuted in absentia for sexually molesting women and chilldren. No one was sent to jail and the western govts and Tele evangelists di dnot ask send the buggers to jail because they destroyed innocent lives of millions of the devotees all over the world. I know INGOS and NGOS are for money. Some of the Sri lankan NGOs getting money from the west openly, but not to the media, has said that they re for money. For investigative journalists these are good news. Unfotunatley, Sri lankan journsalists are bottom feeders. We know Gamini Yuangoda and this said cheevaradhari di dnot prove that they did not get BOND SCAM profits. At least Samanmalee fonseka had said, she though she go tmoney to sue the govt asking RIGHTS TO WORK IN LIQUOR BARD AND BUY LIQUOR. WHOCARES, SLEEP IN THIS MAN’S BED TODAY, THAT MAN’S BED TOMORROW. SRI LANKAN MODERN CULTURE DRUGS, BOOZE AND SEX.

    @ Lalith,
    .
I think that you’re quite right in saying that we should not consider this story a victory of a defeat.
    .
A monk is a man, a citizen of Lanka, no more, no less.
    .
If he has committed a crime, he has to be punished and treated just like any other criminal.
    .
After he emerges from jail, he can don any fancy dress, how can the State stop it? He has the rights that any human being has of dressing any way he likes to – that’s what it boils down to. The first ridiculous statement related to limiting the rights of monks that I can remember came from J.R. Jayawardena, when he said that a monk could not lead a Nurses’ Trade Union. The monk has the same rights as any other person.
    .
Of course, there’s a tragic side to this. The Budddha Dharma and the guidelines for the Sangha represent one of the noblest attempts ever made in the history of mankind. Those values exist in a different domain. These guys are making a joke of it. What can society as a whole do about it? Nothing, I fear.
    .
That’s how fragile goodness and virtue are. The more we get outraged at all this the more we actually damage the Dharma.

      Sinhala_Man:
You have missed a very important point: whether its professional body or a religious entity it is governed by its own rules and regulations even if a member is not in violation of the law but if he/she breaches these rules or his/her actions brings disrepute to the body/entity it can expel the individual for the grater good.
The Mahanayake’s have failed with good reason as they did not want their dirty linen washed in public by Ganasara.
Buddhist speak about Dharma like Sri Lankans speak about culture but have nothing to show for.

Buddhism aside, disrobing this person, will it change a human’s hatred toward others and reform him as a human? I do understand there are real reasons for his anger towards Muslim community and some of them are valid, while some are just exaggerated. But the real question is it is not just as monk, as a human and as a Buddhist would it reform him? We don’t count on monks, we should count on an individual Sri Lankan which more important

Anyway, how come Muslim imams who cause grievous bodily harm to children by circumcising are not in prison? how come Muslims are allowed polygamy (4 wives)? How come the Muslim who had threaten the magistrate and thrown stones at the magistrate is at large?
Sri Lanka is a Buddhist country, NOT a Muslim country. So why are Muslims given preferential treatment??????

Not true in Sri Lanka. Even if they did they will be able to provide for them and will not have to send their women to ME as servants.

that Bhikku is doing something good inside the Prison. I hope he comes out in time for the elctions and explain every thing to grass roots. Yahapalana govts jailed over 60 bhikkus. some may be wrong. but jailing a bhikku because he was keepin gan baby elephant and feeding him was just injustice and the govt or the stupid beaurucrats bullaying and harassing those who are submissive. If it was LTTE they would hide and say Mr. Bakakaran, or Pabakarakn Mahathamya (CBK), would take boques of flowers to hospital (Asutin Fernanado, and would ask do not ,aup :TTE upset they may attackus (Austin fernando) Paba do you want RS 800 million. do not attack me or my sons (Mahinda rjapakse). so, bhikku for them are rifle targets, jail birds and but go to the temple for political purposes.

This should have done long time ago by the Rajapaksa’s when Buddhist extremists caused communal problems in this country, and went around spreading fake news, and anti Muslim/minority propaganda, which led to homes, businesses, and Mosques, being burnt and destroyed. It also ended up with innocent people being killed.
NOTHING was done at that time.

This is encouraging, and let us hope no politician will give this thug back these robes, so that he can get away with his hate crimes, under the guise of representing his temple.

If Rev. Gnanassara is exempted from the application of the law of the country then it should apply to the other 18 prisoners who are also serving prison sentences.

If Gnanassara is released from prison without serving the prison term ordered by court then the country’s penal code, the criminal law, must be changed to exempt all Budhist monks from any criminal liability for any crime they may commit.

Does a yellow robe have a binding effect. If so, was Gnanasara thero in such ignorance when he violated it. Was it in such ignorance that he got into plane in which President travelled and appeared at the meeting in Japan. Did he not have enough time to learn about violations. He should be taken into Malwatiu and retrained about robes. What he really needs is inner karmic cleansing.

I think we are wasting time in getting elated about a thug in yellow robes being punished. If he is disrobed, for the same reason 15 others too are disrobed, according statistics of the Prisons Department and there is no murmur about it. There are, I believe more pressing issues of the nation which the media, whether print or electronic should highlight in the interests of the public. I will not talk of those issues here as the subject under discussion is something else.
