The mainstream Sinhala media is awash with news of Gotabaya Rajapaksa being the front runner from the Lotus Bud party at the next Presidential election. That sums up the pathetic state of the media. The fourth estate must educate and guarantee the citizens right to information. Such information must be disseminated with great responsibility. Information presented with clarity will educate the masses in making judicious decisions concerning their future and that of the next generation.
Gotabaya for President? Sri Lankans must be out of their minds or plain looney to even give it a second thought. Here is a man who is suspected of grave crime dodging appearing in Court to clear himself. An educated public will insist that he goes through a legal process to confirm that he has clean hands prior to representing them and their next of kin. The media must stop the current nonsense and push Gotabaya to do so. Weren’t journalists assaulted, tortured, abducted and even murdered during his tenure as the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence?
The Viyathmaga movement apart, Gotabaya has shown how shallow his thought process is. His new found foray into macro economics, delivered in measured tone
is fake at best. Consider how fake he is. He is a vegetarian. A self confessed devout Buddhist. A Nationalist who assumes that Sri Lanka is predominantly for the Sinhala/ Buddhist.Well and good. But his pets are flesh eating sharks !! Huh? That reflects his true persona. Fake.
Gotabaya as complainant against The Sunday Leader defended the purchase of MiG fighter jets as a Government to Government deal. He gave such evidence under oath. It is now found to be false. He distanced himself from the activities of the Army Intelligence who abducted,assaulted, tortured and even murdered journalists. His style of leadership is to claim credit for affirmative action but blame his subordinates for failure. Qualities of a poor leader.
Seventy years after gaining independence from the British, us Sinhalese (by virtue of being the majority race) have controlled successive governments. Some may argue that the nation has progressed considerably.Is that enough or is it the best we can do? Mirror that with the rest of the world and the answer is clear. Corruption has become endemic. Gotabaya has also been suspected of corruption, fraud and even murder.
A self confessed vegetarian who feeds flesh to his pets is as fake as one can get. Can Sri Lanka entrust the whole country to such person even as an experiment? The Rajapaksa family miscalculated and lost the last Presidential election. If any of them succeed the next time around they will make certain to stay on forever.If not for any other reason, that is good enough to thwart them.
Does the journalistic profession have any shame? Go on do your job and show what he is. Warts and all.

The most important omission of the 19th amendment was making it compulsory for the President to give up any allegiance to a political party. HE can have all the powers but that should be made to use as a check on the excesses of an elected government. Clearly the President and the PM cannot be fighting on different political agenda. Let the political aspect be left to Parliament and the President, directly elected by the people and should ensure the stability of the state and proper governance.

Gota: The author says, ”Here is a man who is ’suspected’ of grave crime dodging appearing in Court to clear himself.”. The key word here is ’suspected’. In any country suspicion is not sufficient for conviction for a crime. There has to be evidence that can stand in a court of law.
The burden of proof of his innocence is not on Gota. Rather, the burden of proof of his guilt is on the legal system of the country.
The author says goes on to say that “Gota is dodging appearing in Court to clear himself”. Gota is not a phantom character with special powers to be able to evade arrest. If the authorities really want to arrest him they can do it easily. He is out there, addressing meetings, having shin digs in hotels, holding press conferences openly and so on. So, let them go and arrest him. They will not do that not because Gota is playing dodging games but because they do not want to do that. The Yahapalanites are just dogs whose bark is worse than their bite.

What Gota eats or what he feeds his pets should be the least of our worries.
As usual we focus on the very petty issues and forget the important ones.
We should be looking at Gota for the crimes he has committed.
Starting from 1987 when he was the army chief in Matale, Giritale camp.
Matale was one of the most brutal areas during the JVP time, where the Army massacared youth like flies. Gota was in charge. He had no empathy or compassion for anyone and killed young boys and girls in cold blood, just on meer suspision. He was known as the butcher of Matale.
The list or Gota executions is endless. Many active Journalist publishing humanrights violations and fraud were conveniently bumped off.
He had a civilian hit squad under his command to carryout the executions.
Then in 2009 during LTTE last battle, tamil civilians who were taken as human shields by the LTTE were massacared to get to the LTTE leadership and they too were massacared under Gotas orders.
(please don’t get me wrong, I am not defending LTTE murderers, what I am saying is that we as a sinhala buddhist people should have captured the white flag carrying Terrorist and given them a fair trial and given them the punishment according to the full extent of the Law, instead of acting like terrorist ourselves).
In 2012 walikada prison massacre, 27 inmates who had fundamental rights cases were killed in cold blood on Gotas orders. The list is endless with all manner of white van abductions and executions to match.
Why don’t we put these crimes on the spot light.
I have not even mentioned the financial crimes committed by Mara/Gota duo nor have I counted the innumerable corners the brothers have cut during their tenure taking the law into their hands, such as having their kith and kin in all the key positions and the crimes they committed.
