Gota For 2020: Sri Lankan If President, American If Not!

The Ceylon Today of 11.03.2018 carries an interview of Gotabaya Rajapaksa by journalist Gagani Weerakoon. For the first time Gotabaya Rajapaksa admits that he will run for President in 2020 if he is asked and he would give up his American Citizenship. He also goes on to admit that his sole focus is to safeguard Sri Lanka’s sovereignty, ensure a united country and the safety of war heroes . Huh? Could you believe that ?

So Gotabaya Rajapaksa will give up his American citizenship ONLY if he is running for Presidency of Sri Lanka !!!!! Otherwise he will be an American citizen who yet loves the sovereignty and unity of one Sri Lanka. Are we dumb? Read Ceylon Today of 11.03.2018.

He goes on to say that he did the “right thing” by “handing over” the investigations into the killing of Lasantha Wickrematunge, abduction and assault of Keith Noyahr and Upali Tennekoon to the CID and TID who made great breakthrough revelations. Consider that these were all journalists as much as Gagani Weerakoon is and one may surmise that it was obligatory of her/him, to ask such questions from Gotabaya. Well and good. One does not know how senior a journalist Gagani Weerakoon is. But it is elementary of any worthy journalist to ask the follow up questions to answers that beg further clarification. The journalist does not. Perhaps the interview was to give the former Secretary of Defence an opportunity in a contrived manner to deflect accusations against him.

The BBC interview with Chris Morris does not bring forth a single reference to Gen Fonseka when you are questioned on Lasantha Wickramatunge other than ” Who is Lasantha?”:

But the Hard Talk interview with Stephen Sackur you take Gen Fonseka to the hangman for accusing you of possible war crimes:

Shame on you Weerakoon for containing the extra judicial crimes to a few of the many that took place. What of the tens of Uthayan journalists who were killed and assaulted ? The world is aware that Gotabaya is an out an out racist. Perhaps you are too.

The world witnessed your infamous interviews to BBC and Hard Talk which went viral and is yet available on the internet

He failed to do so and left many unanswered questions. He accepts that he was high up as far as it goes in the chain of command in this interview, save for the President at the time and PM. That being his brother and DM Jayaratne. He accuses the then Commander of the Army General Sarath Fonseka being in-charge when all these crimes occurred and therefore he must be questioned. BUT HE HAS BEEN QUESTIONED. He has stated to the CID that there were secret military squads run by the very same Gotabaya Rajapaksa using “white vans“and God knows what else.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa takes credit for the military defeat of the LTTE, but does not accept failure to prosecute Gen Fonseka for the above crimes despite handing them over for investigations to the CID and TID which came directly under HIM where Gen. Fonseka had no access nor control over these arms. Huh?

Gagani Weerakoon chose not to know that or did not wish to know since the interview was for another purpose. They were all of her/his ilk and it was an obvious follow up question to ask. Do not forget Gotabaya Rajapaksa had six years, from 2009 to 2015 to direct the CID and TID even to question Gen Fonseka. He did not. WHY? But he did force cases against Gen Fonseka for a puny amount in purchasing binoculars and then of course the White Flag issue. Could it not have been the biggest feather in Gotabaya’s cap if Gen. Fonseka was prosecuted for these attacks? He would not be in parliament today if that was done. He had more time than enough.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa takes pains to defend his “civilian” Chief of Intelligence Kapila Hendavitharne but throw Gen Amal Karunatilleke as the point person in charge of Intelligence. He accepts that it was the Army Intelligence who were behind these crimes at this interview. A careful consideration of this may reveal the real reason. Perhaps, just perhaps Gen Karunatilleke is the stronger of the two and could withstand a probing interrogation. The other reason being that he was a serving “war hero” and easily defended. Obviously as the question is not put to him he does not comment whether the Army Intelligence officers so involved are “War Heroes” in his eyes.

What a country Sri Lanka is. Do we believe this crap? Perhaps we do. We believed that there exists infertility pills that could be introduced to Kottu Roti, when such an invention is yet to be devised. We took it to the next level and burned muslim houses, shops and places of worship. We believe we cannot arrest a saffron robed person even if he is breaking the law in front of policemen. So I guess Gagani Weerakoon and millions of others would believe you Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Oh yes they would. In the meantime,

Be Sri Lankan if you are President of Sri Lanka or be American if not. You decide. Sri Lankans will follow. (By Suranimala Umagiliya)

It is sad when we have a very weak President, it appears even those who were called murderers and rogues by him (President) in the recent past can come back to power. It is also sad that the President has midnight meetings with the same person whom he called a rogue few weeks ago and takes orders from this rogue and not appoint Sarath Fonseka. It is also sad when the country is under emergency rule, SLFP cabinet reshuffle has not been done and the country is unstable, he runs to India and Japan. Even if these were pre-arranged trips taking into consideration the present situation he should have stayed back. Can this President be trusted? Does he even know what trust means? We have seen him jumping from one party to another over night, after becoming the last in the recent election he requested the PM to resign who got much more votes than his party. What does all this say, its clear that the President is the weakest President Sri Lanka has ever seen. He has no control over his own party, he cannot appoint the suitable person to a post and above all he even cannot appoint a Presidential Commission of inquiry but a committee to investigate this race riot. What is worse than a race riot for a country, why no Presidential Commission, whom is he protecting?

      Park,
You are correct. Sirisena is the worst president we ever had. Now he is trying to get another term as president with the help from Rajapaksha group. He will never have a chance if the Mahinda Rajapaksha can contest again. Sirisena is protecting Gota to get his support at the next election. then only the barrier is UNP and specially Ranil. That is the reason why he and his goons like (Sak) Kili MahaRaja wants Ranil out. See Sirasa Media attack against Ranil. This Sevala Bandakka president is trying to split UNP who took him up to president chair. what a dirty person he is. he is worse than Mahinda Rakapaksha and he has done a irreparable damage to the country. President refuse to UNP request to appoint Sarath Fonseka as Law and Order Minister because of Rajapakshas. Actually this Government govern by Mahinda Rajapaksha and (Sak)kili Maharaja.

This is all crap …………….the Rajapakses are just playing cat and mouse with Sirisena/Ranil ……

There is only one popular cult figure in SL that can pull the vote ……..and that is Mahinda ……….without Mahinda the rest of the Rajapakses are nothing; including Gota……….It’s true, like someone said if Mahinda backs a coconut husk …….it’ll win

Mahinda is hanging around in politics not for anyone else but for his own offspring …………..Mahinda is just using his siblings as he uses everyone else for his advantage ……..he is not going to hand it to any of the siblings on a platter………….

So, the next presidential candidate is Namal …………and he will receive all the votes that Mahinda would have got if Mahinda had contested himself …………. and for the people Namal is just a token and as good as Mahinda coming back and running the whole shebang………..

      shankar,

No , in 2020 the contest will be between Gota and Sajith , MY3 is using his predecessor’s “Shape” theory ;thus, he will be in his good books. Even though Sajith himself is a crook and a pseudo person , we will have to support him in order to defeat Gota becoming the president of SL.

then what does MS get out of that?I thought he will want to be the president again.

maybe he is trying this stunt of protecting gota to have better bargaining power against the UNP to support him for another term. All this strategy of courting the SLPP via gota started after the UNP abused him publicly for instigating the bond scam commission. He was very angry about that and asked ranil to shut them up,which ranil did. However MS knows the game is up for him with respect to getting UNP support again for another term so he is trying to be another machiavellian mahinda. Can he pull it off playing mahina gainst ranil.

As for sajith, what makes you think ranil will step down in the first place.32.5 % islandwide votes saved his bacon. If it was less than 30% then he would have been a goner. As usual our modaya voters are not bothered about the bond scam or our gigantic debt levels. They cannot see ahead for the next 50 years where they and their children and grandchildren will have to keep on paying the debts till they die.

MS blackmailing Gota, what a joke. MS is shit scared of not only Gota but MR too. MS knows that MR will never forget the backstabbing and will give him the works when he comes back to power. After the LG elections, MS knows that he is nowhere, and is now going behind Gota for protection from the wrath of MR. MR is not going to allow Gota to withdraw and allow MS to win, and Gota is not a fool to believe MS, who has also backstabbed UNP and minorities who brought him to power.

        Dr.gnana

you forget backstabbing is quite the norm in srilankan politics.Forgive and forget is the moto and todays backstabbers will get together and backstab someone else.

Don’t put too much weightage on MR letting out some steam about the aappa dinner.Sinhalese are like that.Today they will shout at each other, tommorow they will have dinner together and while smiling at each other will be watching their backs too.Gota is in deep shit with these cases against him and MS is thinking he can play the only card against him. However it will not work.Rajapakshe bros cannot be divided permanently because they are hambantottans, not pollonnaruwa.

The Sri Lankan populace will be treated entirely like the ‘Welikada Prison’ massacre if this psychopath was selected in 2020 and it may come for fruition.

Its a shame that this man acted against all sorts of humanity is not in a prison by now.

Sri Lanka will be Idi Amin’s Uganda after 2020 and God Bless Sri Lanka !!!!

Matilda, you and some others who view Gota as an evil psychopath or something else are happy to accommodate SF as the next president. Have you forgotten what crimes he committed before painting him as the best presidential candidate? Scaremongering the populous has become as signs of desperation for not having a credible option to take the country forward. Present lot are finished except with foreign intervention to dictate any future outcome. Racism comes from the people who make scaremongering.

We are going to face the consequences of the misrule by a gang of Sinhala/Buddhists supremacists over the past 70 years in this weaken state where a clash of Hindutva fascism with Sinhala/Buddhist fascism becomes inevitable.

I did watch and felt that he was spitting to his face. As an intellectual, a senior lecture and a Priest , blaming the person who he himself vouched for is so immature. If the president has no back born, Rev Dambara Amila should have recognized it before supporting him, if he failed to do so, he is not fit to be a teacher. Now that if his mis- judgement is exposed, he should not go public and ridicule the person whom he chose to be the president of this country Instead He should find waysand means to pressurize the president to fall back on track. The track they want the president to rule. Without doing that having media show depicts, these people should not be trusted at any moment of time. If the president is not good, Rev. Amila is also a stakeholder he is also to be blamed for misleading the voters. Many voters listened to him and voted for this president. He and his group alone should take responsibility.

Rev Dambara Amila thero did not claim to have superpowers to predict the future like MRs jothshya man way back in 2015. Like any human we can only go by what our 5 senses take in analyze and then act upon it. Like Rev Dambara Amila thero half the population of Sri Lanka believed and vouched for Sirisena said back in 2015. I dont doubt that even Sirisena had doubts. But looks like when a leaders is asked to step up he turned to his true self, a Rs. 2.50 Pathole. There is nothing wrong in admitting you were wrong. In fact that’s what a sane person should be doing. Repeating the same mistake over and over hoping for a different outcome is the sure sign of lunacy. In fact if you let your senses listen first before spitting out onto the keyboard you will hear Rev Dambara Amila thero is advising Sirisena to step up or step aside to someone who can.

People will be stupid to vote for white vans, journalists threatened, kidnapped, or murdered, and ex military criminals on the rampage, getting rid of the Rajapaksa opponents. People in this country, cannot learn from the mistakes of the past.
We may have clean streets, but we will have some littered with dead bodies, and no killer will be found (Lasantha and Thajudeen, being examples).

stop being an idiot and suggest something productive. Name someone to take the country forward by uniting and improving the economy. It is no point making these statements repeatedly. This is getting stale now.

While you are still on patriotism I suggest you read Professor of Law and Ethics Martha Craven Nussbaum’s Patriotism and Cosmopolitanism published in Debating the Limits of Patriotism, For Love of Country. The book contains 18 articles on Patriotism. It is an interesting read. One of the essay is written by Prof Amartya Sen (Humanity and Citizenship.

For a parochially motivated Sinhala/Buddhist patriot like you the debate may not make any sense. However others may find it not only interesting but enlightening.
Essential background reading to prevent Sinhala/Buddhist fascism flourishing in this island and elsewhere.

          Hamlet

Please refer to your previous typing about five or six days ago, you sounded like a crooked politician championing nation, flag, patriotism and whole lot of loaded words.

Only the crooks need to wrap around in national flag to prove their bogus patriotism.

A few years ago my Elders mentioned a about 2000 years old poetry which was all about humanism and internationalism:

To us all towns are one, all men our kin,
Life’s good comes not from others’ gifts, nor ill,
Man’s pains and pain’s relief are from within,
Death’s no new thing, nor do our bosoms thrill
When joyous life seems like a luscious draught.
When grieved, we patient suffer; for, we deem
This much-praised life of ours a fragile raft
Borne down the waters of some mountain stream
That o’er huge boulders roaring seeks the plain
Tho’ storms with lightning’s flash from darkened skies.
Descend, the raft goes on as fates ordain.
Thus have we seen in visions of the wise!
          We marvel not at the greatness of the great;
Still less despise we men of low estate.

          Kaniyan Poongundran, Purananuru – 192
          (Translated by G.U.Pope, 1906)

Shenal your comment proves my point. By the way Heroism don’t come been Minister of defense sitting in a safe office in Colombo looting tax payer money to make a fortune at the same time sending others sons and daughters to fight to keep the country safe. You seems to aligning with modern day character with the biggest loot word for that is hypocrite.
Lasantha’s criticism aimed at politician’s for their unethical action’s regardless of party affiliation.

            Leonard,

One needs quite a courage to declare war upon the world’s deadliest terra organization which had even taken the life of the primier of world’s biggest democracy. Besides, courage is needed to face the consequences of being defeated militarily and politically if necessary.

No pundit would have come forward to accept defeat except the man sitting in the safe office. No one would have to face the political fall out if the army was defeated except the man sitting in the safe office.

Therefore, please give the man who had sat in the safe office his due respect.

Lasantha was a gutter press journalist. He acted on his master’s political ideologies and performed his master’s political contracts. He was no hero. But a lame traitor.

I had to chuckle sorry ‘ No one would have to face the political fall out” you are correct in sentiment but alas not in Sri Lanka no politician or Department head, Specially the powerful men sitting behind the office desk.
Then again no big deal putting up with so called non existent political fallout. Mega millions looted and tucked away will ease the pain don’t you think so. I will give Gotabay the credit for his leadership and at the same time high five for masterfully accumulating ill gotten riches on the back of the war to benefit the family for generations to come.

If the army was defeated Mahinda would have faced a electoral defeat in the next election and would not have the ability to face next elections. Just look what happened to Chandrika. That is not even being defeated in a entire war but few key battles.

Aren’t you people going to get fed up with this billion dollar loot of Mahinda. You people have been saying this for the past few years but not even a cent from that loot have been found despite Some ministers even saying the amount bank accounts contain. Please stop this nonsense. No one is going get fooled except you people.

An easy analogy to simplify your undying defense of Gotabaya.

Lets say you are a parent of a daughter while she was swimming in the river she starts to drown a man comes and saves her life then later on and he comes back and rapes her.

I guess you would support his action and defend him because after all he save her life and you are so grateful to him.
                  Here lies your moral compass.

                    Leonard,

First thing. Mere allegations won’t make a man a criminal. Yahapalana government has come to power for more than 3 years and they couldn’t even prove anything worthwhile against Mahinda and clan. Therefore you rape analogue is not fair.

The financial corruption allegations against Mahinda was orchestrated by the UNP to tarnish the unblemished record of Mahinda’s rule. People have fallen to it because they are ignorant about economics and politics as a whole. We can forgive a man get duped back in 2015, but if he still believes that nonsense after all these years. He should not be forgiven.

Avant Guard case where GR ,privatized the SL Navy’s marine security operations is the biggest corruption and national security scandal in Sri Lanka – as big as the bond scam.

Yet Avant Guard is not mentioned and he is not questioned on why he created Avant Guard Scam by CT.
There were powerful foreign interests involved in this Privatization of Sri lanka Navy operations – Avant guard is the name of a global seucrity and survelliance compnay.
Senadihpatti, Wijedasa Rajapaksa and Tilak Marapona along with GOta were behind the Avant Guard deal to advance the sole Super power’s and foreign security interests in the Indian Ocean. They went on holiday to LA together! Gota is a US citizen and the US has a file on his Human Rights violations during the war. There is a great game being played with US citizen Gota as Kingpin.
This is also a game of bi-partisan UNP-SLFP corruption brokered by a foreign embassy in Lanka – in the name of reconciliation – Fake Reconciliation that advances foreign security interests and Corruption is the name of the aid game in Lanka today..

Gotabhaya Rajapakse is not the only Sri Lanka who hold dual citizenship. There are thousands of Sri Lankans holding dual citizenship and that is their personal choice. If he decides to contest for the President post he has to make a choice. So what is the big deal?

Because of the possibility of Gotabhaya contesting at the Presidential election, poor Lasantha cannot Rest in Peace. How many times this Government dug his grave to make a media show. Third class politics of this Government.

This writer should be ashamed of writing such an article about Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa a person who is regarded in high esteem by the majority of Sri Lankans. Do remember that the citizens of SL are looking forward for the return of Gota as the President this time.

Excellent news for Sri Lanka. We need strong, brave, and gutsy leadership to deal with the enemies of Sri Lanka both here and overseas. Mahinda and Gotaput an end to separatismand stood firm against all attempts by Western powers to intimidate us. Compared to him we had RW saying that Sri Lanka cannot defeat Tamil terrorism as there is no answer to suicide bombs.Chandrika evenagreed to partition off the North and East tothe Tigers for 10 years.Today we have a country bankrupted by Sirisena and RW divided by ethnic violence and corrupt to the core.
Only the Rajapakses will save Sri Lanka from this morass.Everybody should support Gota.

History seems to repeat in cycles..seems ethno-nationalism is raising it’s ugly head around the world again…fascist leaders are being elected and not just in the often backward 3rd world….and the likes of Percy rejoice and lick their lips in anticipation, while the good people are starting to worry about where all this is headed…will the cycle be allowed to complete?

Percy the dated, disturbed and pathetic

“We need strong, brave, and gutsy leadership to deal with the enemies of Sri Lanka both here and overseas.”

Do you seriously believe former national hangman will be able to smash the enemies overseas, all at the same time, USA, Portuguese, Dutch, United Kingdom, Hindia, …..?

” Mahinda and Gotaput an end to separatismand stood firm against all attempts by Western powers to intimidate us. “

Dr Mahinda and Dr Gota in various on the record interviews said without Hindian help they could not have won the war.
Here is an excerpt from his interview:

Q What about the United States or the West for that matter trying to secure a safe passage for the LTTE leaders?
That is what he says. The west tried to get the LTTE leaders out of that area by working out a ceasefire. That would have given another chance for Prabhakaran to fight. You could see why we could not agree to it.
      QHow strong was the pressure?
It was a huge pressure. You could imagine the US and the west exerting such pressure to stop the war. The US, at the beginning, helped us. But, with the change of the government and policies there later on, the situation changed. Later on, the Obama government appointed officials such as Samantha Power, Nisha Biswal who gave opinions on human rights. They and the western governments wanted us to stop the war forgetting the fact that the LTTE failed them many times. They have forgotten history.
Q How important is India for future relations?
It is very important. We understood it at the beginning and reached India.

        Stupid native veddah
I thought you were stupid but you are incredibly naive as well. Do you seriously think that someone who is aspiring to lead the country is going to divulge his foreign policy intentions. Anyway where in the interview you quote does anybody acknowledge Indian help in the war against the LtTE. India may have helped covertly, but is not evident in your quotation. So you are not only stupid and naive, you are dumb and dishonest as well. Poor showing for someone who spruiks his Dravidianism!!

I agree that we need strong, brave, and gutsy leadership. But all the names you mention including this fool, and I can add a lot more to this list, are proven now to be a leaf of the same book. This book is Sri Lanka’s own Mein Kampf. As patriotic and loving as I am of my mother land, I bet you will see these are the traitors who will be written in history for the downfall. Together as a community (be it Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim or otherwise) we will stand strong, divided we fall. All these traitors use weaknesses in the fabric of our nation to their own petty short term personal, political, economical advantage. Every time you hope the ones that are in leadership will prove to be strong, brave, and gutsy they have failed us all. Maybe all that is left is a military coup to clean up the garbage, be it polical or religious and otherwise. This may save our heroic but sons and daughters of poor patents who are serving in the armed forces who will eventually bare the burden. This may save a few generation of kids like many of my class mates from returning home from the war zones in body bags. Don’t be another page in this dirty book!

If Gota has admitted he has ambitions pertaining to the presidency, it is very likely that he may be behind the recent attack on Muslims. After all, he is a very good buddy of the BBS, he even opened their offices for them. It could also be an effort by the brothers Rajapaksa, for they thirst for power again. Either that, or the money they fleeced the country, is not sufficient enough.

for gods sake when will the country move on from the war psyche?
